  1. My Bariatric Life

    Surgery today and pic

@@woo woo Dr. Winslow is tightening me because I had some looseness. It is a revision. I have the incisions inside my ears and behind them. I don't know if I have a neck incision. We really destroy the quality of our skin with massive weight gain and loss. Plus I lost some weight after my face lift. All of it contributed to some loosening. It is wonderful of her to revise me for free. I know many doctors would say it is your own fault for losing weight, or would say that I look fine the way that I am.

    VSG with a Mirena

Thanks ladies! Although i know my mirena has contributed to some of my weight gain (food started tasting really good after i got it--like REALLY good-lol), ive heard about the hormone issues. And even though its in a different location, you just never know. Plus i dont want any hinderances during my weight loss stage. Sent from my SM-N920T using the BariatricPal App
  3. I am freaking out and need smart advice. During the 2 week period (pre surgery and post surgery) I lost 22 lbs. I was thrilled when I weighed in at my 1 week post op checkup. I went from BUT I weighed myself at home few times in the 2 weeks since and I have gained weight. I feel so discouraged and upset. I am following the diet averaging 50g of Protein a day and 55 ounces of Water a day. The other day I realized that I am drinking to close to eating times and I have now adjusted to 15 minutes before and 30/40 after. Even with that, how could I GAIN weight?!?! My partner told me to stop weighing myself (which I have done) and have faith in the tool. I feel like the surgery did not work or that I am doing something wrong. My 3 week checkup is in 2 days and I am terrified to step on the scale. HELP!!!!!!! Lauren My New Life

    Almost 7 months out and...

What are you eating? Do you track your foods? Medication can be a tough one. I'm on a med for my anxiety that is known for weight gain. I do plan to get off it after my surgery (scheduled for 4/4)...but my health anxiety was getting the best of me so I had to get back on it. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  6. No weight loss and no weight gain. I am stalled and I know a couple of reasons why....I need a fill (appt is in January), I have not exercised as much as I should and I have been so busy at work. I am looking forward to the holidays and making good choices. Have a good week everyone!
  7. I didn't tell anyone I got the band. I didn't need any "expert" advice. Yesterday on the Today show they had a segment on a fellow named David Smith. He was on a program a few years ago. It was titled the "650 lb. Virgin." He lost all of his weight, had plastic surgery, and looked teriffic. Now he has gained 250 lbs. back. It was heartbreaking to watch him crying about his weight gain. All I could think of was, it was too bad he didn't have weight loss surgery to maintain his loss. Research has shown that the brain of an alcoholic, drug user and obese person are the same. They have fewer dopamine receptors(Nature Neuroscience 2005). The failure rate is 95%. Do the math and come to your own conclusion.

    Lap Band Question.. Please help!

Emma, after being a sweet tooth girl my whole life, I finally started gaining weight after my thyroid stopped working. Over a 10 year period, I went from a healthy 145 in my 50's to over 200 in my 60's. In the early years of weight gain, I cut out my daily ration snickers bar totally. After some years went by w no sweets, I noticed one day I no longer craved sweets, but could hardly tolerate them, except after a meal. Goes same for carb craving--w lap band in 9/14/10, I have cut out breads, starchy stuff & do not crave that either anymore. My point here is, those cravings can go away & just say no. (I stopped drinking sodas & sweet drinks years ago also.) Look at your future at what you will eat, & not all the stuff you won't. Strawberries are really sweet, add sweetner, cut them up & have at the end of a meal or for a treat. Look for healty substitutes for all the snack stuff & you'll overcome that craving.

    Fat People programs

Bobby you are correct in your statement. The misconception that surgery is the easy way out for obesity is worldwide. I noticed that even some in my family have discounted my success because they assume it has been easy. I too had been on every weight loss program and gimmick on the market. if I had all the money I have spent on those things I would be extremely wealthy. In reference to the Big Fat Happy girl , Whitney, she knows she is obese and has tried to accept it but is actually trying to lose weight. I give her credit for dancing and trying to keep moving. I am not sure what her diet is like they do not show her eating so I wouldn't judge her. I do believe there are medical issues that cause weight gain. I went through menopause and hormone therapy in my late 40's and put on about 50 lbs in the process. But I still believe that limiting your intake and choosing healthier foods will get you where you need to be. this is the first time since I started trying to lose weight that I have been able to maintain . I am happy that I made the right decision for me. My health has improved drastically and I am enjoying life much more. We would all like that "pill" but I know from experience with pills that they don't work long term and do damage to your health.

    Regrets???

Me! I am in process of revision from VSG to RNY. My sleeve was dilated with the end of my esophagus due to stricture/dysphagia. This caused VSG to fail resulted in 65 lb weight gain. I have completed all pre testing. I have psych eval on 1/9 then we submit to insurance. Hopeful and ready.
  11. Hello! My name is Debbie and im 51 years old. I have always had a weight problem. In December 2013, I had enough when I couldnt fit thru the gate at ball game. It was so embarrasing, I had to be escorted to another entrance. I cryed. I decide this was never going to happen again. I made an appt with the surgeon. January 2014 I saw Dr. Ali in Erie Pa . Hes absolutely wonderful, so compassionate. After 6 months of diet docs and many appts, with weight gains and losses and excitment and disappointment , I finally arrived at my surgery date. On September 17, 2014 I had sleeve surgery. This is by far the best thing I have ever done for me. Yes! I said for me. I have 4 grown children which I might add,,,only 2 really supported me. The other 2 where very skeptical. You see I also have 6 wonderful grandchildren whom I wanted to see grow up, have their own children and enjoy life. When I embarked on this journey I had diabetes, high blood pressure, depression and thyroid dosease and sleep apnea, high chlosterol and I have already at 51 had a heart stent. I was scared. When this journey to a new me I weighed 205 pounds , at surgery time I weighed 191, Today I weigh 156 and it just keeps comimg off. I went from a 3x size clothes to now a 16. I have never worn real jeans, the ones that zip. I now can. I feel strong and well. Since surgery the diabetes, is gone ,high blood pressure is gone, thyroid diesease (mimimal meds), the sleep apnea is much better, the chlosterol is normal and the cardiologist says he doesnt need to see me unless I have an issue. I can walk up stairs now. I have energy enough now to sometimes tire out my babies. I have had no issues. I think it is because I have been exacting about all the diet phases and really take my time and really heard what my body now says to me. I have only had pain, one time, when I ate way to fast and WOW! did that ever hurt. It felt like the worst huge bubble. Believe me lesson learned. I would reccommend this surgery, but I seriously feel that this choice has to purely be for the patient. Like dont do it for someone else. There are definetly, life changing, life style habits that must be followed thru. Thank You Jesus! for my success. God Bless to all, and good luck to anyone whos future is WLS.

    Too Much Information

restless monkey - yes i have that problem - lose then gain plus another 20. I am now 240 or 235 - i had been bouncing up and down from 222 to 196 for the last 6 years. If i can eat 1000 cals a day i can lose weight. that is why I am ok w/ trying lapband. I don't want to do something drastic until lapband is proven to not work. My docs had said that lapband had cured a lot of diabetics. So I'm hopeful. And the other thing is that the rebound weight gains won't happen (the rebound weightgains are due to volume eating when i get carb 'reactions' low blood sugar and becoming a bottomless pit) - this cannot occur w/ lap band. I do tend to do a lot of research - but in the case of bypass i am not right now at the point of believing that is my best option - in 2 years maybe i would change my mind but i have to try the tamer option first. one is reversible the other isn't. one requires a lot more time off the other doesn't.. so at this point i know enough to not pursue it. Don't mean to be defensive. It just took me years to get to accepting the lap band. I think I will lose on it. I just may not lose more than 30 lbs in 1 year (40 if i am lucky) but that is fine. The following year I can lose another 30.
  13. It's never too late to make changes. So many people are struggling with weight gain. Your experience and support in this area is needed. People need to know you can get back into weight loss mode. Keep inspiring! thanks for your post.

    2016 Fall TV Season

Don't care. Surgery is going to give me an extra 0-50 years and I sure as hell am not going to waste them staring at the idiot box. Besides, I'm sure a huge portion of the people here can blame a good part of their weight gain on a sedentary idiot-box-watching lifestyle in the first place.

    Gained 4 pounds :(

I second the time-of-month possibility!! Around when I ovulate I lose water and then I gain water like crazy and it looks like weight gain... Then after my period it looks like I'm having just SUPER weight loss!! Progesterone makes me puff up....

    Weight gain

Has anyone gained weight prior to pre-op appt? I may have gained around 10 lbs after my dietician released me for surgery... ???? I'm really scared they will postpone my surgery... please tell me some good news. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using the BariatricPal App
  17. Hello, I have experienced the same thing. My band was removed in September 2009. I started out exercising and lifting weights and watching my diet but gained 20-30 pounds after my band was removed. I am scheduled for sleeve surgery on March 19, 2010 with Dr Wade Baker. Can't wait. I am not able to get back on track after being so angry with the weight gain. This is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do in my life. I feel this is the best decision for me. I have lost almost 100 lbs with band but i was sick with it. I pray this works for me.
  18. Hi everyone. I have never posted here, didn't have the need until now. While only an HPT has confirmed it,I do believe I am pregnant. I am in shock. I do not know why since Dh and I did not do the right things by b/c last month, but I was under the mistaken impression that since I had fertility issues in the past my 44lbs weight loss would not be that significant. Well, I ws wrong. I am terrified! Terrified of telling my dr since he was adament about waiting for two years. Terrified that I will have to stop jogging which gives me pleasure or that I will be too tired to do it. I am horrified that I am concerned with the weight gain I may experience because for the first time in a long time I like the way I look. We were planning on starting in the beginning of the year but now, I guess not so much. I don't want anyone to think that I am not happy about this. I am ( I think) but right now I am just in shock. I haven't even told my husband yet, although I told him I really thought I was pregnant two days ago and he laughed and said I wasn't and to stop spazzing since I am so irregular. I guess I need for someone to tell me the obvious. I am a grown up and my doctor won't holler at me ( too much) and that I am not really going to gain 70lbs (only gained 18 with our son pre-band--he is now 18 months) and that really, worse things have happened. Thank you all for letting me vent. Mikki

    I need encouragement!

Thanks for keeping it real. I've been doing so well since surgery, but the past few days have had trouble getting my butt on the treadmill. That's how it starts. I commend you for asking for encouragement, so here it is. I decided months ago that since nothing changes if nothing changes, I wasn't going to go into this life change with the same behaviors I did in the past. Namely, let how I feel rule what I do. "I don't want to exercise" isn't a conscious decision not to exercise. It's a fleeting feeling of today. I choose to make the conscious decision to override that feeling. Every single stinking time I do this, and choose the thought-through, smart decision over the fleeting feeling, I'm making progress and working those habit muscles. Eating, exercise, social interaction, you name it. I am NOT a slave to my feelings. Where the head goes, the body will follow. Fake it til you make it. Do it anyway. Pick a slogan. Any of them that work! Thank you for reminding me that I was slipping into "feelings rule" mode this week, and that's a dangerous, slippery slope for me. Matter of fact, that slope is about a 150-lb weight gain slope. Been there, done that, bought the size 4XL t-shirt. Good luck and stay connected!
  20. Let me get this straight, you have all the pre-op stuff on April 5, so what is your surgery date when you have surgery at 12:30? Or was that in another post and I missed it? And, this Friday is the 25th, so you have a week and a half after your provera to get over your "monthly monster" this go-round...is that enough time? I'm thinking no diuretics, not a good idea before surgery, not unless you Dr says it's okay. Nope, don't do the Water pills. That could mess you up better than weight gain will. And as far as not going home the first night, well, the insurance may not go for that. What's the possibility of a sister, mom, or good friend whisking you away to an inexpensive hotel for a night of recovery? No dogs, no distracted and overly concerned, unnecessarily worried DH, warm heating pads, lots of pillows (create a recliner of sorts on the bed) and long halls to walk every few hours. Is that a possibility? Forget the scale, what's five or so pounds when you are over 300? I don't mean that ugly, but I'm 220 and I can fluctuate 5 pounds in a day, it would seem your Dr. would be much more concerned about your overall weight than a few pounds gained which could easily be water retention. Ya know? Plus, you will have just had this PCOS treatment (which I am not at all familiar with but have seen others posts about it) so that would have to be taken into consideration with your band Dr. Does he/she know about this treatment you are having? Plus you say your clothes are no looser or tighter, that's probably a good indicator you are fine. And you start a new job in May. You and Crystal/Vinesqueen need to hole up together and sing the stressed out blues! Aww Katie, I hope this all works out okay for you. It really sounds like it will, you just need to see it from the other side, and the other side is comin like a freight train...wooohooo!!! You are gonna do great, and feel tons better when you get some weight off, even just getting below 300 will make a huge difference in how you feel about everything!! Looking for updates...take care, I'll be thinking of you!

    Women sleeves

We all are very different. We lose at different rates & our experiences of stalls can be different - longer or shorter duration, more of less frequently. I’m sorry you are experiencing this frustrating plateau. As @ms.sss asked, what are your stats? What is your caloric intake? Do you track your food & does your nutritionalist review it with you. There is a lot of variation in food portion size & calorie recommendations. Personally, I only got to around a cup of food at 6 months when I reached goal. Those first 3 months I was only eating 1/4 to 1/3 solid food so my calorie intake was lower than others. Are you on any prescribed medications? Some can slow or affect your weight loss rate too. I can track my biggest weight gains to changes in my hormones - puberty & menopause were the biggest - so there could be something in what you said about the article. (Could you include a link to the article please as I couldn’t find it in their site - looking in the wrong place most likely 😉.) I noticed that Sage offer a resting metabolic rate assessment. Did you do one before surgery? If so it may be interesting to see if there has or hasn’t been a change.
  22. I have read that one of the signs of band eroision is weight gain. Stupid question but I'm going to ask it anyways. Is the weight gain caused because you lose restriction and you can eat whatever you want or...............is there something else that makes us gain the weight? I might have band erosion, having an endoscopy tomorrow, and I cannot stop gaining weight. Yes I am probably eating more now because I have no restrictionn, but there are days when I don't eat that much and I have gained about 8 pounds in 2 weeks. I am freaking out. Thanks for your input.
  23. So I had the sleeve done 3/14 and so far I have no issues. My stomach tolerates everything I introduce. I can intake liquids with ease and i have restriction with food. The day I arrived my weight was 311. Day of surgery I asked to weigh again I was 306. After surgery I weighed myself (I know I wasn’t supposed to I was 295). Today I’m 299.8 and I’m scared to be back over 300 lbs but why am I gaining weight? I’m not even eating enough food to be gaining anything. Is this normal? I’m so afraid of messing this up or failing but seeing the scale go up is sending my anxiety through the roof.

was at goal now put on stone

If you're eating bigger portions and you can eat solid meals, so that you're not relying of soft foods, you most probably need a fill. Try to fit in a brisk walk at lunch, and other times during the day. Take the steps rather than the elevator. Park at the end of the lot. Try to work in more cardio on your days off. Add a little weight training if possible. When your work slows up a bit, hopefully you'll be able to fit in more exercise. Try to start fresh, and not lament the weight gain. With the band, you can always have a new day one. Good luck!!!

    Woman question!

I was always a B. Weight gain got me to a 38C. Now that I have lost weight, I'm back into a 34B. The girls snapped back pretty well. I went to a PS consult to see if I would benefit from a lift, but was told that I wasn't so much drooping as that I was experiencing middle age deflation and would benefit more from augmentation to re fill the upper part of my breast. Good luck to you and your breast. Susan
