    No Weight Loss

As long as you're expending more energy than you take in, you should lose. I realize that sounds simplistic, but it's true. Not everyone needs the same amount of calories. I found that with 800 to 1000 calories I wasn't losing weight, even with working out about 45 minutes to an hour every day. I needed more to lose weight. Have you talked with your doctor and a nutritionist? My doctor was very supportive when I brought this up and pretty much forced me to meet with the nutritionist again. It was tremendously helpful. I strongly suggest that you do the same. Good luck!

gastric band in brussels in may 2011

Firstly congrats to all on this thread who either have or are having band with Dr Chris. He's great. Hopefully my ticker says it all. He will take a bank transfer and this can be paid in one go directly with Frederik into the bank in Belgium. I paid all of mine upfront before I went in July 2010 as I didn't want to carry the cash. As you say it is a personal experience but you will find lots of positive support on here and another thread "Does anyone know Dr Chris de Brueyne" do a search for Belgium and it will come up. I love having my band and my journey over the last 10 months has been interesting. Please feel free to read my journal and ask any questions you may have. Tonight, I am celebrating with a lovely glass of rose because I am in a size 12 trousers and top and I have 13 pounds to go until I reach my target weight of 106.5 pounds loss. So a very happy bunny who is so pleased she went and spent the money so wisely! Enjoy your journeys and please let us know how you all get on. Take care Claire x

    Anyone Banded 9/5/07 ?

Linda, What did the doc say? I've hit a wall. I'm at 229 and usually I "bounce" in my weight. In Feb I had gall bladder surgery and couldn't get a fill because of the healing. Well, in all of March I didn't drop at all. So, I go in for a fill tomorrow, but man...not losing anything has been frustrating. And, I'm not restricted as much and I am eating! I've been eating more than I should, and things I shouldn't! I know I need to get moving. Weather is getting nicer and I'm doing more yard work, but I am starting to get "the munchies" more than I used to (right after band, anyway.)

    No Weight Loss

hi, i was just wondering have you had your thyroid levels checked lately, that can really impact on your weight loss. are you on medication for your diabetes? this can often stop you losing aswell. make sure you are drinking plenty of water during the day and keep away from things like juice and cordial you would be surprised how many hidden calories these contain.

My Friends/family need me to be overweight

Um...you WILL be losing weight "the natural way" as you put it! You will be eating healthfully and exercising! The weight will be coming off based on how much effort you put into it. Change is scary for people, especially when there is a role you fulfill in their lives. Keep the focus on YOU! You are doing the right thing for YOU.

My Friends/family need me to be overweight

I took a different approach, I only told my immediate family which consist of my husband and two kids. I didn't want any negative feedback or all the questions and dumb remarks. I'm sure my mom would have been supportive as she had WLS in the past but I just couldn't bring myself to tell anyone. I don't like my life being the focus of people's conversations as I have enough people at work that want to talk about me. My private life is just that PRIVATE! I've heard enough people talk about WLS and the band (especially) that I know they are not educated and I just don't feel like being the one to explain it to them. To many people think its a quick fix and we here know that it's not, we know that the weight only comes off if we work to get it off. Good Luck!

My Friends/family need me to be overweight

Life is a short run, we are in here to make the best out of the time we have. Less weight=more time? What do you want?
  8. Best wishes and good luck with your weight loss.
  9. Ah all I have to say is don't go looking for trouble because you will usually find it. Just go with it enjoy the weight loss, take care of yourself and your band, live your life and be happy!! Life in general is just too short to be worrying about it, if a problem arises deal with it then and don't worry. We have enough saggy skin we don't want to add wrinkles and worry lines to it

    Nightmares

I wouldn't say I have nightmares, but I did have very vivid dreams for about three mounths after I had the band placed. I still have vivid dreams sometimes but they normally occur after fills and are about food. An example would be that I totally binged and gained like 30 pounds in one sitting. I would wake up feeling like i was drowning in saliva from my mouth watering.

    Brand New and recovering...

I haven't been back in a while, sorry y'all. Just been working on healing. The ER trip a shortly after surgery wasn't much fun. I always seem to have a hard time recovering from any surgery that seems to do with the abdomen. Anyhow, been just over a month, doing pretty good. Doc kept me on liquids for the first whole month, I think to be safe. After a bit, I was getting where I was starving. Ended up doing a lot of cream of whatever soups, every two to three hours. So when I went to see him I gained back six lbs. Now I like my doc real well but he is such a "surgeon", all about results. In and out quickly. Tried to lecture me on the soups, *which is listed in the paperwork as a FULL liquid, and keep and mind he said no solids*, plus how I hadn't come to see him in a month. Hmmm, convenient, considering he went on vacation, so reschedule, then he was moving to a new office, they called and reschedule again! Grrrrrrrrrrrr. Anyways, last week he told me I was to go to Stage for eating within a week, did I get sick, yep, at least twice, got to slow down, listen to my body. Am I a little more satisfied, yes. I do realize, that I eat when I truly don't need to, so aware now. I have my first fill tomorrow, a little anxious, just hoping the port does not start to hurting real bad again, it just finally let up. Wish me luck, hope the rest of y'all are doing well.
  12. I was banded 6/19/12. Haven't lost any weight except the pre opt weight. I have just over 8ccs in my 14 cc band and every time I eat it gets stuck!!! It's not only annoying but painful, what am I doing wrong!!! Then on top of everything getting stuck I'm not loosing weight and have gained 6 pounds:(.

Is it possible to lose too much?

Hello Ltnt, My husband also played football and has more muscle mass than fat, although combined has put him in a considerably higher weight range than desired. I understand your issues/goals completely. Like you, he also bought an additional year to convince himself it was time for help. I think the band will help you considerably. As for reaching a min BMI. I believe once you qualify for the band and insurance approves the procedure you are no longer on the watch clock per say. They prefer wl prior to the procedure to minimize fatty liver and to assist in a speedy recovery and this is per doc orders so it should not be an obstacle.

    Can Anyone Else Identify?

Enjoy - staying in the present is hard to do; I have the same issue. I'm better now than I was years ago (I'm 58), but still find myself projecting what's to come. Just a suggestion.... When you find yourself reeling out of control mentally, pull back and focus on your breathing. That should bring you back into the present. Do it as many times as you need to do, to keep pulling yourself back. Worry is the illusion of control, so just focus on today I think the reality is, for most of us, that there will be times when we DO gain a pound or two. That is just life. The band doesn't make us perfect people, but it's a good tool to keep us in check. I was a lost cause and couldn't lose any substantial amount of weight to save my life. But now I'm near goal, which would never have happened without the band. A couple of weeks ago I saw a 2 pound gain on the scale. That was the first time since surgery. I know why I gained, but seeing it in black & white was a slap right back into reality. I've since lost those 2 pounds, plus another 2, and I'm back on track. Getting right back on track has always been my biggest issue, but I've done it over and over in the last 10 months. It's a fricken miracle! It sounds to me like you are doing just fine. A doctor said to me years ago, that long term weight loss isn't about being a perfect dieter. It's about being able to get right back on track when you go off. I think it's important to focus on making continual small changes, and keep your eye on the ball. Regarding tracking food, with the band, I think calories and Protein are the two most important things to track. If you have other health issues that require you to watch sodium, sugar and carbs, then certainly track those as well. But generally, calories and protein are the two major keys. At this point, I'm like gowalking....I no longer track my food because I eat the same most of the time.

Is it possible to lose too much?

When I show up for surgery tomorrow I'm not going out of my way to find a scale. They made me weigh in last week to verify I was on the liquid program. I obviously cant hide the weight loss if they insist I weigh in. I'll give you guys a for sure answer tomorrow after I get banded. Game on!
  17. I am early in the process, haven't even seen the psych or nutritionist yet. So, I have much to learn I guess. Looking forward to hearing other people's experiences. I am going to Mercy Hospital and my doctor is Lufti. I am concerned a little because I already get the feeling they are stingy about fills because of all the lecturing that just because you gain weight doesn't mean you need a fill. They talk like you have to go over exercise, diet, and convince them that you are doing everything you can and THEN need if they think you need a fill they just might think about it. ha ha. I wonder if they get more money for surgeries than fills. I am serious that's the tone I'm getting and I've gotten concerned! What's the point of getting the band if they don't fill it. I guess once I have the band, if I need a fill I can get it elsewhere. Maybe they are just trying to teach us the band isn't a quick fix, we still have to diet and exercise and work hard. I get that, but still... why put in a band if you aren't going to fill it. I hope they aren't as stingy about it as they sound. I think they are just trying to teach us to not run for a fill every time we gain a pound but the overall tone has me concerned. I guess I am not sure what to expect really, and I'm eager to read all the information I can so I know what to expect and what I can do myself to make the surgery more successful.

    Portion sizes

I measured things out in a cup the first few weeks but changed over to just eyeballing food and eating till I was no longer hungry. It works better if you're in the green zone. If you're not, you could overeat but I refused to be hungry all the time. It's just a diet till you get enough fills to make you feel satiety. I have a decent scale but I seldom use it. It's mostly to make sure I'm using the correct weight of Protein for a recipe.

    weight gain

I have been at the same weight for more than a month now. I have had sinus issues, on meds for that and I am sure they cause weight gain. I am off the meds now and the sinuses are mostly clear so I am hopeful I can start losing again. It can be a slow process, I have learned patience through all this.
  20. Dunno. I had pretty slow weight loss overall (probably 1lb a week averaged out over the whole 90lb) and havent got sagging skin and I'm 40. But who knows? That could be just me. I'm going to say something I will get ABSOLUTELY FLAMED for, lol, but here goes. I reckon you can pick a mile off people who have had fast weight loss on high Protein diets. It produces a very distinctive look, and I was quite happy to eat carbs and lose weight slowly thanks.

    Digestive Nightmare

For me I get very fatigued. Think back to day three postop. Been feeling run down like that for a while now. Also I can't grip things with my left hand. I don't have the muscle coordination to hold things. My left leg is weak, unbalanced, wobbly, and numb. Feels like I have a few 10lb weights strapped too tightly to my leg. Then there is cognitive. I fumble for words, mispronounce words, constantly lose my train of thought, and for extra fun add a handful of anxiety. 10 years after dx and I think I'm doing pretty good. Just noticing I'm not bouncing back from episodes to 100%.

    Light Headed!!!!

Thanks guys for all the feedback. I have not needed my BP medicine for the last 5-6 months. All my BP checks come back great. It's weird, it only started after surgery. And seems to only happen when I stand from sitting. Maybe it is my caloric intake. I will adjust my diet. But other than sitting to standing I never get the feeling. I am extremely active, play football every weekend and never get lightheaded, lift weights, run etc..... Very odd

    Light Headed!!!!

You may have postural hypotension - a drop in BP when you get up from sitting or lying down. You may need your BP meds adjusted. I have been on high BP meds for ages. About 9 months after surgery I ended up in hospital as I collapsed in a hotel with extremely low BP. I was taken off my meds altogether. Over a couple of months my BP increased to the point where i am back on meds to control it ( not all high BP is due to weight, or diet or often any obvious cause).
  25. I had a co-worker who did low carb. I'm just guessing that she probably dieted from 340 something down to about 275. She said she was able to eat 60 carbs a day and was still losing. If you can do some moderate exercise along with the 80 carbs a day (and maybe tweek the program a little on the higher carb meals so that you don't eat a bit of the carbs) I think you will still lose. And frankly, moderate loss is better than no loss on gain while you are in this window.
