  1. So, I am scheduled for my rny revision on March 21st. Had my pre-op today. It's going to be out patient, a simpler procedure than my original bypass. Still have to do the modified liquid diet pre-op for 14 days: 2 meals protein drinks, 1 light meal (3 oz lean meat, 1 cup veggies) or another protein drink. Have to get pre-op testing... bloodwork and an ekg. I'm excited and ready for the 21st to be here! I quit smoking two weeks ago as part of my surgeons requirements. I am making the changes needed to make the most of this. I know weight loss will be slower, but I'm also in a better place to stick to the plan. My revision is not due to regain, just a boost to get to goal and to help with digestive and slow motility issues. Original surgery was over 21 years ago,I starting weight was 475. I lost 100lbs down to 275 gained some weight when I got pregnant but then lost that regain, and kept it off. Last 17 years I've bounced between 245 and 275. Due to medical/digestive issues, I go through periods where I can barely eat and then go back to maintenance diet. This surgery is not only to help me get to a goal of 175ish but also to help settle the digestive issues. Any other revisions going on this month?

Pre-op appointment today. 2 week pre-op diet starts Monday. I've got to get some blood work and an ekg. My surgery is a revision. Distillation of my gastric bypass. It is out patient, I'll be home same day. They aren't doing anything with my pouch which is why it's out patient. I'm excited for the 21st to get here.

    Milestones!

My Upper GI, Chest XRay, and clearance with Primary Doctor on Tuesday went well. The Upper GI wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. The Pre-op coordinator called today and said she was passing me now to the schedulers and warned that they were slammed and scheduling now for April and May. I told her I was being a patient patient and going with the flow. She emailed some lab work that I will have done at the end of next week. It’s good to have this over and done and now waiting for the ducks to get into a row. Now I’m focusing on the daily goals of watching my blood glucose numbers, closing my Apple Watch activity rings, and getting good sleep.

    6 Months Later

I also am six months (almost) out and have some of the same feelings. Slider foods—ones that you can eat a lot of without feeling the restriction—are real. So what I do is I tell myself if I still want it in two hours, I can have a little bit. Then I put a portion in a bowl or on a plate and only eat that. No taking the entire container or package out of the kitchen! Carbs are NOT the enemy. Your body needs carbs for energy, and the more active you are, the more carbs you need. Fat is NOT the enemy. Your body needs fats for hormone balance, especially for people who are AFAB. I finally went to a nutrition program where I have a coach who helps me once a week. I plan my meals and sometimes things happen and I go off the rails—but just for a meal or maybe a day. Then it's right back on the horse. I am still losing about 1 pound a week, and I'm around 15-25 pounds from my ultimate goal (how much exactly will depend on the results of next Wednesday's DEXA scan, since my goal is sub-20 body fat percentage, not a scale number). It might take me six months or more to lose it, and that's okay. The longer it takes, the more eating the 'right' way feels normal. For reference, I'm only a little taller than you but significantly heavier. I am extremely active (workouts, running, coaching, working outdoors) and I am losing a pound a week on about 1700-1800 cals a day, split pretty evenly among protein, fat, and carbs—about 140P, 160C, and 60F. Every body is different. Just rein in those habits now.

That’s great! Unfortunately my surgeons office does the same plan for everyone! I’m at 41 bmi so I would prob have to do it for a week if it was a sliding scale. Oh well!!

    Still pain at incision site

Yup. I had that stupid pain at that location until about week 3 or 4! Up until that time I had to sleep semi sitting up in bed because I dare not lay down flat or on my side cause if I did, YIKES, that pain! LOL Anyway, it was a pain in the you-know-what but it should be giving you some relief soon, I'd say.

    A shameless plea for support

Interestingly enough, I had an appointment with my dietician today and we spoke about portion sizes. Oh, I also had my surgery last May (19th). Part of the reason for the appt. was due to a VERY long stall I've been in. Anyway, one of my concerns was whether or not I was eating too much at each meal and she assured me I was not. And I'm typically eating around 3-4 oz of meat and 2-4 oz of veggies. She said at this far out we should be eating around a cup's worth of food. Of course this may change due to the type of foods you are eating. She said you may be able to tolerate a little more or less than that depending on the type of food. Of course her answer was to STOP eating when you start to feel full regardless of the amount you started with. So, if you measure out 4 oz of chicken and 1/2 cup of veggies but get full after the chicken or after the chicken and SOME of the veggies (but not all), then just stop, of course. Anyway, I was worried about the stretching out of the stomach too since I can eat more now and told her as much and she said no, based on my food logs I was NOT eating too much for where I am right now post surgery and that a cup was a normal amount. So, I doubt you are either.

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi Everyone. I am suppose to advance to solid food on Monday and for some reason it scares me, doesn't feel like my stomach could handle even soft foods, is that normal? I have been only doing mushy this week and I did eat some yummy refried beans yesterday about 1/2 cup or less and believe I ate them too fast because they kind of sat in my upper belly and when it finally hit my belly it felt bloated. Maybe it is just getting use to it. I do have a tendency to eat too fast especially if I am hungry. I was at the time, at least I think I was or maybe it was just something that was good. Thanks for the tape measure advise, I am gonna do that.

It’s tiered based on bmi. I think I’d cheat if I was required to be on a clear liquid diet for weeks. I need queso dip to function 😭🤣😂
  11. Hi everyone. Had my surgery June 5 2021. I’ve lost around 93lb and feeling great. Physically had no problems with the surgery which I’m very very grateful for. Over the last maybe 6 weeks, though, I’ve lost nothing. I can feel myself getting back into bad habits. I go to the supermarket and, instead of picking up chicken, I pick up chocolate or crisps. I also have found that my portion sizes are slightly larger now over the last couple months, even with protein foods like plain chicken with vegetables. A few times last year, maybe 3-4 times, I ate too much and was sick. Often I would feel that really full feeling like something is stuck in my throat. But this year, I haven’t had that. I don’t seem to get it anymore. All this to say I’m really bloody worried. I’m so worried about slipping back into my old ways. I’m worried about my portion sizes going back to normal and gaining all the weight back. I would appreciate any support or advice you can give. Did any of you feel like this and get yourself back on track? How did you do it? Can any of you confirm that eating more at this stage is normal healing and that my stomach hasn’t stretched back to normal?!? Thanks in advance NJ x

Are you all on a 2 week liquid date prior to surgery? That’s my surgeons plan and I’m so dreading it. But it will be good practice!

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi there! I'm now a month and two days from my sleeve surgery on Feb. 1. It's been amazing to watch the pounds fall off - I'm down 25 pounds since surgery and 42 pounds since the start of my two-week pre-op diet. This week, I moved up from pureed foods to soft foods. That's *mostly* been a good experience, and I'm especially happy to have more variety in my diet now. The main challenge is that with soft foods, I find that chewing thoroughly and slowing down between bites is even more crucial than with pureed foods. I think due to stress and work busy-ness, I tend to be a fast eater. Well, I experienced the consequences of that today after eating some deli sliced turkey on saltine crackers at lunch - I ended up with severe chest pain and then had the dreaded foamies. So, I still have some adjusting to do as a result of the sleeve. Also, I'm so annoyed that I didn't take all of my measurements right before surgery. I ended up taking them a few weeks ago and again today, and it's great to see the inches come off. If you haven't yet gotten the tape measure out, I encourage you to do it! I hope everyone is doing well and recovering quickly from surgery.

After surgery am I doomed to a life of throwing up???

I’m 5 weeks out and the only thing that made me puke so far was taking my multivitamin on an empty pouch 🤷🏻‍♀️😂
  15. Hey Y'all! I'm having the SADI/SIPS (duodenal switch variant) on 4/4/22! It was originally scheduled for 2/28, but I couldn't get the cardiac clearance tests in time. So, next available was 4/4. I'm a bit bummed about how long I have to wait, but I've come to realize it is a great opportunity for me to practice all of the new habits I need to acquire - such as: sipping (I'm using a shot glass to drink water so that I know what a 'sip' feels like in my mouth.), eating itty bitty bites, exercising a bit, getting into taking the multivitamins routine, and testing different products for the clear liquid week following surgery, etc. Just by way of stats - 58 year old female Texan who needs to lose 140lbs.

    Weight Gain

My weight has “gone up” several times now since having had my surgery 5months ago. In fact this is the weirdest weight loss experience I’ve ever had in terms of predictability. It’s happened four times now where I get on the scale and “suddenly have lost” 5lbs “overnight”. Then two days later I’ll “gain 3lbs” that will remain stubborn for a week. Then after that week I’ll lose 4lbs within 4 days. Then “plateau” again for a couple days. Some days I’ll lose 1lb a day. Other days I’ve stalled for up to 4 weeks. My highest “gain” was 8lbs, which I “lost”within 3 days. There is absolutely no rhyme or reason to any of this. I follow my diet very very consistently. I could exercise more but I do move around a lot naturally due to where I live. My nut and doctor both agree it’s perfectly okay as long as the overall direction of the scale is to go down. I’m 5months post op and have lost 90lbs so (despite it still being super hard) I remind myself not to stress out over it. When the scale is giving me too much a headache I just stop stepping on it for some time. All that to say: dont stress out! You’re most likely doing everything perfect and your body is working hard! Good luck!

    Weight Gain

Welcome to the three week stall! It is probably the most discussed problem on this message board. Just keep doing what you know to do (follow your surgeon's dietary guidelines, keep walking) and it will work itself out. It is very frustrating when you are in the middle of it, but when the stall ends, you will lose weight FAST.

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

UPDATE: So I had my meeting with my dietician this morning. She said based on the log I provided her from the Baritastic app for the last two months she did NOT see that I was eating anything that I shouldn't or in quantities that I shouldn't. She still seems to think I was/am still being a little inconsistent when it comes to protein. She said that based on a few missing days and some days where it may have been lower. But I tried to tell her overall, I think I HAVE been pretty consistent regardless of those few days/logs. Anyway, she said at one time the 800 calories a day was probably good enough for me but now that I'm working out more regularly that maybe now I should up my calories and protein. Calories to around 1000 to 1100 and protein more than 80/90. I feel like she's guessing, in a way, on what could be wrong too because of the fact that she said she does not see anywhere in my food logs or workout routine where I'm doing anything wrong. She also mentioned body composition. She said maybe I have actually gained more lean muscle over fat and whatnot and that I should pay more attention to that. I told her I DO have a scale like that and, even though I weigh regularly, I DO NOT log the actual weigh ins unless there is a loss so I can't or haven't seen if there has indeed been a change because it doesn't log it on the app unless I allow it to. So, I need to start logging those slight gains too in order to MAYBE get a better idea of what is going on. My husband and I were talking last night and we still think that my cut in Metformin dose still may be playing a part in this long stall. I had my dose cut in September and October was my last real loss. Also the last time my period was normal. So, I brought that up to her and she doesn't seem to think that's the reason. She said it was right that my dose was cut because my sugars have been improving and warranted it. Like the doc said, she also said the weight loss itself could be causing the irregularity in period and stall. That there is no way to know for sure if it's due to the weight loss in general or the Metformin. But I don't know. Just awfully funny that it was cut down and suddenly I stop losing weight and my period has been jacked since too. Anyway, I think I'm gonna go back to my old dose for the next few weeks and see if anything changes. If it does I will then discuss that with my family doc who I see in two weeks. Because, if the scale starts moving again, then just maybe I need to go back on it for now. I know my goal and point of having the surgery was to GET OFF this medicine but who knows. Maybe I still need it for now. I still feel so confused. She said she understood but that I DO seem to be doing everything right and that I should stay the course. Anyway, that's that.

    Weight Gain

It is just water weight and your body adjusting to the lack of food. It is hoarding both water and calories for now. Keep the faith, it will start to come off. I know it is frustrating, it was that way for me too....it actually still is frustrating when I plateau for a week or two....I am down 93 pounds and I still get frustrated after 6 months. Hang in there.
  20. I had my surgery (sleeve) on 2/14 and recovery is going relatively smoothly. I’ve been following the dietitians guidelines and starting to walk 30 minutes a day. Over the last few days the scale has been going UP not DOWN 😫. Has anyone experienced this? My thought is that I didn’t get enough protein in the first week following surgery and my body is balancing that out. Thoughts?
  21. Its hard to make the decision to do this surgery until you know for a fact that you have to get it. I haven't had the easiest ride since surgery and there are a few more like me. For about 3 weeks after surgery, I had buyers remorse and I did buy it myself. Then things turned around a little and got better. I love my new stomach now, I love how little I am able to eat and am growing in confidence in the foods that I can try again. Take your time with the decision, you can always return later if the time is not right for you now. I would say though that you need to listen only to your inner voice. Your husband may be having second thoughts and passing these on to you. Take care and good luck

Update: I'll be on 2 weeks optifast starting Monday. Pre-op testing a week prior, then the green light. I'll have one week vacation followed by one week of computer-based training at work (as opppsed to field work), which is why I planned this when I did. Still pain at incision site

I'm sorry you're going through this for so long. You'll get varied responses here. I never had any pain and never took any of the pain medication. But others, obviously, have. It probably is "normal" like your surgeon said and if you need a pain pill, take one. It shouldn't be too terribly much longer before it settles down, like at the 4 week mark.

    Recovery time

For me its day 8 post op and I've noticed a huge pick up in energy levels. You'll be fine to live normally after a week with one caveat : if you deviate off the diet plan and are out and about you are not going to be in good shape. If you start dumping and are not home to lie down and rest you will not be able to function. So there is your choice, go back to work but take no chsnces with food. For me the golden ticket is fruit smoothie with protein powder. I've learnt my lesson Sent from my SM-G973F using BariatricPal mobile app
