    Surgeons Stats...

My surgeon says he hardly places bands anymore and is doing several revisions a month. He's really supportive and positive about revisions. He said that lapbands just never performed the way they were "in theory" supposed to work. As long as you are comfortable and confident in your surgeon, you should be in good shape. If not, it never hurts to look around if you can.

    Is there any hope?

Valentina, my God, what a tragic story. My heart is actually aching for you right now & if I could hug you, I would. Every day that you wake up there is hope. If the surgeon you saw doesn't help, go to another one. I've read where people have not lost a lot of weight w/the sleeve and had to return for a revision. I don't know much about that procedure, but research and ask questions. Most of us aren't doctors, so we can only offer support. I commend you for taking the first steps towards a healthier you. It's time to fight for you, you truly deserve it. Please keep us posted.

    Frustrated with People

I had complications with my band after having it 7 years and had to get it removed. The surgery to remove it was difficult due to lots of scar tissue. I've gained 40 of the 100# I lost and I'm at 260 now. I'm working towards getting a revision...taking the steps to check all the boxes. When I bring goodies in I make sure I let each individual know they are for everyone. When the supervisor brings the stuff in he sets them on one person's desk and says I brought this for you and so and so, meaning the 2 people who sit together. I'll get over it, I've just been feeling the need to externalize.

So you had your lapland removed almost a month ago. Did you have a revision? Were there complications with the band? How can we help you?
  7. Hey, okay so I have an update. I met with my surgeon today and the administrators did default to the "6 month" answer at first, but then I showed them the link to the pre-authorization form and the policy revision (provided by 2goldengirl) and with that, they thought it was sufficient to get the ball rolling on the 3 month suggested timeline, as per the new policy outline. Which I thought was awesome, and good for them for being good advocates for their patients!! So it seems that I am going to go through the process as outlined in the new policy, they will include that in my paperwork, and then submit for approval in three months! I just wanted to share, because I was ready for the worst, based on some of the stuff I've been reading. This was a pleasant surprise, and I'm very happy to report that - as it seems today - I won't have to jump through a million hoops! Talk to me in three months if I'm declined

  11. Short and Sweet. I have overweight for over 20 years. I was banded in September 2012 in Baltimore Md at GBMC. According to the surgeon, I wasn't overweight enough for sleeve or bypass. At my first fill appointment, the doctor could not find the port. (Can you imagine the feeling of a needle moving around looking for the port). Come to find out the port slipped. I went in again November 2012 to have the port re-attached. I completed all of my follow-ups and lost 40lbs. I moved to Raleigh, NC in March of 2014. I went a full year and a half without connecting with a Bariatric practice. I was referred to Dr. Bermudez by my PCP and met with him Sept 22, 2015, expecting to get a fill. After discussing some symptoms, Dr. Bermudez wanted to do an endoscopy to check my band position. Sure enough, it had slipped. Dr. Bermudez suggested the bypass surgery and I was scared. My insurance did not require a 6 month weight loss requirement, just to do the normal pre-operative items (psychiatry visit, support groups, blood work). I didn't have to do a sleep study. At my decision appointment, despite all of the information my surgeon provided, I wanted the sleeve. He said ok. I was approved December 23, 2015 and scheduled for surgery on February 3, 2016. After doing soul searching and research, I decided the bypass would be the best option. I contacted the office and luckily, I was able to get approved quickly for the bypass. (I know I am incredibly bless to get an approval on the first try). So here I am. Surgery scheduled February 3, 2016. I am scared Sh*tless..I hear so much about dumping syndrome, eating tiny tiny bites and getting full off eating a couple of ounces. I am like WHAT?! But I will go through with the surgery. Wish me luck.
  12. Revision from lapband to Bypass Dec 28,2015....very sore, aching, scarred but ok...still on the full liquid phase because I don't want to push forward too fast in the phases....64 ounces is a bit tough and getting my protein is a bit tough....slowly progressing and each day gets a bit better.Very happy.
  13. I've been following this conversation intently, because I worry I'm going to face the same hurdle. I have my appointment with my surgeon tomorrow. I've printed out the pre-auth form and policy update, and have links to each in case they need to go to them directly. But I worry that they will run into the same issue when they call if Blue Shield CA isn't giving out current information. 2goldengirl, did you have to go through the grievance process? Or was your medical group or surgeon able to figure out the revised policy? Or do you know anyone who did have luck where someone was able to verify through Blue Shield CA the policy change and say "yep, that policy was revised! No more 6 months!"? As far as I can see on these forums, everyone is having difficulty with this. Thanks so much for all your knowledge on this! (Also, I know I should, but I don't know what my medical group is versus my insurance provider versus the surgeon. :/ )
  14. What was the outcome after they found out your sleeve was too big? I'm going through something similar. I'm only ten months out but I know I can eat way too much and have been able to for months. The original doc said I may have stretched it out but I was thinking it had to do with my having the band first. However, due to my insurance changing I'm going to a new doctor next week and they are already saying something is wrong since I've only lost 10 pounds. I'll be having some testing done to see what's up. The surgeon left my sleeve too big due to the band. I need a revision. I also found a drawing of what my sleeve surgeon did to my stomach from sleeve to band it was not cut right size.

    Any February Surgery Dates...

HI, Im scheduled Feb 1st for a revision from a sleeve I had just shy of a year ago! I am so excited!
  17. I had surgery December 21st. Everything went really well, had little to no pain, and have recovered nicely : ) Back at work and the gym after two weeks, and now I'm about 3.5 weeks post op. I lost 17 pounds pre surgery and 13 pounds the first week while on the Clear Liquids phase. However, I've stopped losing weight, and have even gained 1.5 lbs. since I started introducing solids. I'm doing everything right: measuring food, chewing slowly, not drinking with meals, Protein first, stopping when I'm full. I should note, I had Lap Band done in 2007, but had band to bypass revision 12/21/15. Has anyone else experienced this? I have a post-op appt this Monday, but I'm looking for some answers! Questions and concerns on malabsorption

I am 32 months post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery. Before surgery, I had severe acid reflux (GERD) along with a number of other medical conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. These conditions went into remission within days after surgery and remained there. If you have GERD, bypass surgery is generally the recommended approach. If you have the sleeve with this condition it can make the condition worse. Several individuals on this board had sleeve and because of GERD had to have a revision to RNY gastric bypass. I do not find that the malabsorption issue is a problem. I take a lot more Vitamins now after surgery but their cost is offset by the fact that I am no longer buying prescription medicine for my other conditions that went into remission. I think it may in all likelihood be the exact opposite. After surgery, they periodically require a complete blood workup. This nails any malabsorption issues. The Vitamin regiment is modified after these tests to correct any malabsorption issues. So my body is probably better tweeked than before surgery.
  19. I'm struggling. Ten months out and I've only lost 10 lbs. In the spirit of full disclosure, I do not exercise. I haven't had any restriction since the swelling went down after surgery. And, I can eat huge amounts of food compared to what I see others posting ... I'm talking 1/2 a bagel or 6 oz of chicken breast. My surgeon feels part of the problem is that two months ago my GYN put me on hormones for cycle issues. Or, he said I've stretched my sleeve. Not sure how I could have stretched it when I don't over stuff and I don't drink anything carbonated or while eating. Well, due to my insurance changing, I have to get a new doctor. In my interview, I found out that due to my having the lapband first, the sleeve may have been left too big. Now I'm going to have to go for some testing...not sure just what yet. And, possible revision surgery. Anyone else heard of this?
  20. I had my revision to the gastric sleeve done on December 22. 2015. I'm down 20 pounds but I noticed that others have had quicker weightloss during the first month. So how much weight should I be losing a week? My surgeon never discussed that with me.
  21. I had my lapband since January 2013. I had major complications due to slippage and I had it replace. I still had major complications so my insurance approved my revision. I had my surgery done in one day. My scar tissue was minimum considering I was banded twice. It's definitely the surgeon's preference whether it will take two surgeries. I didn't want two surgeries so I found a surgeon who was willing to do it in one. If I had major scar tissue then two surgeries would be needed. I was sleeved December 22, 2015 and I must say I feel wonderful
  22. Hi Everyone, Not much of a poster but I thought I'd add my experience. I had my surgery on 12/7 so I am one month and one week post op today and doing very well. Mine was a lapband removal and revision to RNY. Hospital 1 night, came home the evening of the 8th. I came home with a JP drain that remained in for one week - it was a pain but didn't hurt UNTIL it was removed and then I had 4 days of terrible pain. I weighed 217 on my surgery date and this morning I weighed 197.1, I'm happy with that but some days it seems like I'm losing very slowly - I try to remember that it's fast compared to regular "dieting". Eating has been fine so far - I am still on mushy foods until I see the doctor next Wednesday so I mostly comsume: Protein shakes, eggs, re-fried Beans, tuna and some soup. I've gone from two shakes to one shake per day because they were making me constipated, ugh. I had a VERY bad dumping episode last week (first one) after eating rice pudding - even though it was low sugar pudding my doctor reminded me that rice becomes sugar as it digests. It was a horrific experience and I hope it never happens again - but, lesson learned, I will be very mindful of sugars now that I know that I am prone to dumping. Sometimes it's sureal to me that I had RNY - I feel very well. I've had a couple of instances where I actually forget - and once picked up an entire sugar cookie (duh, bad idea) but I came to my senses and put it down. I am very much looking forward to moving to solid food - I think that will help keep me full longer (yes, I do still feel hunger)! I hope everyone is healing and feeling well as they adjust to their new tummy! Kelly
  23. There is an insurance lady who coordinates but she thinks the revision surgery may not be covered. She said the removal will be but possibly not the 2nd surgery. Ow they have me going for blood work and tests to see if they can classify me with a co-morbidity. Unfortunately it is purely genetics and I am a unicorn. My original surgeon said I was the healthiest morbidly obese patient he had ever met! ????

    July Butterflies Master Thread

I hope all is well with everyone. I had my surgery in July 8, 2008 in PA. I had not complications or other issues until summer of 2014. I had a small slip. I was unfilled and the band reset itself back in place. In late July 2015, I had another slip. My new surgeon in NC, didn't want to unfill it at that time. I started experiencing heartburn, lower back pain, gas, bloating and other digestive issues. My surgeon did some xrays and we decided that it must come out. He asked if I wanted a revision and I informed him that I didn't want a revision. I had my band removed on October 26, 2015. All went well; surgery and recovery. I was put of work for 8 weeks following the surgery due my highly physical hib. My doc wanted to be certain that there wouldn't be any further issues. All in all, I have lost 130lbs of fat and I have put on 10 lbs of muscle. I have kept the weight off mostly by walking, a lot of dancing, calisthenics and eating well. I burn a lot of calories with dancing, so I actually eat more than I used to just much better. I hope everyone has a wonderful new year. Take care!

    Surgeons Stats...

Revising a band isn't rare. Stanford (ca) recommend it to me because of my band issues. They made sure to walk my insurance through because my BMI was under 30. It is rare to place bands these days, at least at a hospital like Stanford which has experts in the field who are teaching doctors. My doctor did 3 revisions after mine on 12/15. But they also have a strong belief of taking the band out and allowing 2 months of healing prior to the next surgery.
