    May 2022 surgery?

Update on my progress. Surgery was May 13. I lost a pound per day the first week, then stalled for 2 weeks. Finally loosing again! Down 26lbs so far, including pre-op diet. Have been working out 5 days per week on elliptical and on regular food now as of Friday. Struggling to get my 60 oz of water in, but started using my timer yesterday to remind me to sip something every 15 minutes except before and after meals. I have only had nausea once and have only vomited once - both times caused by drinking too close to meals. Overall, this has been a much better experience than I anticipated since I am 62 yrs old. Surgeon says I'm doing great! I only took 3 days off work, and then worked from home for 2 weeks (desk job).

    Not losing Weight

I have no idea what your stats are (start weight, etc) and that is pretty important to this discussion. To answer your question, I lost 11 lbs in the two week pre op diet, and then 15 lbs in the first month post surgery. I lost most of that the first week after surgery, but I did not have the water retention issue most people have in the first few weeks post surgery. My meds helped prevent that. Your loss sounds good and in fact probably on the higher end but hard to say without more information. We all know that human bodies don't work linearly, but even so mathematically it is unlikely people will lose 3+ lbs a week every week. I gave a rough example below of why that is. The estimated baseline daily calories needed for a 380 lb woman, roughly where I started, is 2400 calories if I don't do any movement. Let's say early post surgery I am eating 700 calories/day. That gives me a daily deficit of 1700, which amounts to 11,900 calories a week. A pound of weight loss needs around 3500 calories of deficit (through food and exercise) so even in the best case scenario, an 11,900 deficit results in a 3.4 lb loss. As you get lighter, MBR reduces. So, now I am about 278 lbs. My estimated basal MBR is roughly 1900, but now I am eating around 1400-1500 calories a day, per my program. Let's assume it is 1400 to make my math easy, then my total calorie deficit all week is 3500, which should equal one pound. That's a huge difference from where I started. Disclaimers: This example is just that - an example - and I would not take it for gospel or base any decisions on it. It's just meant to show that folks shouldn't think they are going to lose 5 lbs a week. Like I said, my estimates above use an estimated MBR that does not take into account exercise so it may be off, but it's just meant as an example. I also don't think weight loss is as easy as "calories in, calories out" as we all know metabolism is affected by many other factors, some of which we probably do not understand yet. I don't want the example above to in any way encourage people to start cutting back even more calories - that's not healthy long term and it can have devastating effects on your metabolism and health long term; that's why so many programs now push getting your calories up quickly. I'll also add that once you start adding in serious exercise, you do need to increase your calories or it can have the opposite effect of what you are aiming for - you can't expend 5000 cals a day and only eat 500 calories and expect healthy outcomes.

Best wishes and positive thoughts to everyone whose surgery is today and this week! Congratulations for sticking with it through the tests, appointments, waiting, etc. 🎉 I HAVE TWO MORE ‘SLEEPS’ 🎉🎉TIL MY WEDNESDAY SURGERY🎉 Continued best wishes and healing thoughts to those who are recovering. I did a lot of retail therapy yesterday to keep myself occupied. I even started a re-styling project for a favorite piece of furniture. DH even got onboard with it because, well, he ‘just’ knew that it would be best if he did. 😂 LOL I had the tiniest morsel of birthday cake at a birthday we celebrated after dinner yesterday. Today and tomorrow I’m at school, this afternoon is my COVID test. I’m keeping busy till Wednesday the best I can. Thank you to everyone here who provided the most useful diversion and information while I trudged toward approval and surgery!

Congrats! I’ve been completely compliant on the week today on the 5 shakes a day/one snack pre-surgery diet. Surgery is Wednesday the 8th. I’ve dropped 14 lbs in 2 weeks but I know that would come to a screeching halt without surgery…because it always does. Covid test today.

As another example of how individual it is, I'd be thrilled with losing 3-4 pounds per week. That wouldn't be at all slow for me, much less "sloooooooow."

    Not losing Weight

It really is different for everyone. I lost a ton of weight really fast. Like 30 pounds in 2 weeks kind of fast. Then I had a stall for 2 weeks, and now I'm losing sloooooooow. Like really slow. I'm still losing, but now it's like 3-4 pounds a week.
  8. The 6 month wait and pre-surgical testing has nothing to do with being the US, it's required by your insurance company, so even if they covered international surgery you'd still need all that stuff. Every insurance company is different. When I got sleeved in 2016 I had Empire and I had to wait 6 months. When I got my revision last year I had Fidelis and only had to wait 3 months. My doctor said if I still had Empire I wouldn't have had to wait at all because they changed their policy. Mexico should only be considered if you can self-pay.

5 lbs in a week is pretty good - think of it this way, if you lost 5 lbs every week that's 250 lbs in a year! Of course that can't really maintained, and some weeks will be more and some will be less. Everyone's numbers are different, as long as the weight keeps going down that's all that matters.

June surgeries? Tell me your preparations

Im a week out and starting the liver shrinking diet today. I messed up and thought the 2 weeks prior included starches too… I’m hoping my liver has enough time to shrink

    Not losing Weight

some people don't lose ANY weight the first week. A lot of us come home from the hospital up to 10 lbs heavier due to the all the IV fluids they pump into you. that said, 5 lbs is pretty normal. Most WLS patients (at least normal ones - not the kind who are on "My 600 lb Life) lose in the 15-25 lb range the first month. So 5 lbs in week one is pretty normal.

    Food Before and After Photos

It’s per kilo (2.2lbs). Lamb has been expensive for a couple of years. Drought & apparently a high demand for Aussie lamb overseas. Blueberries have doubled in price also (from the recent floods) - $12.99 a punnet at my fruit shop but again high quality. If I buy them from the grocery store they’re cheaper but I end up throwing most of those out because they become overripe, soft & mouldy in a day or two. General grocery items have gone up here too. Spend $150 & walk out with like two bags. Crazy. Still have trouble buying certain items. There one day & then no supplies for several weeks or months. Taken to buying doubles of things. I’m a carnivore through in through, @GreenTealael. I enjoy the occasional meat free meal but could never go full vegetarian or vegan like some of your family. But I grew up on a generational farm & my grandfather was a butcher for many years so it’s in my blood 😁😁. Damn that bread you made looks spectacular.

I am only 6 days past surgery and I've only lost 5 lbs. Maybe this is normal, but I expected it to be more I guess. What has your weight loss journey been week? Especially the first month? Sent from my SM-N976V using BariatricPal mobile app

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I agree on the volume going up a bit, but knowing when to stop is key. I hit 284 with my weigh in yesterday... that's -119 overall. Very happy. My arrhythmia is down to once per month which is amazing. And I'm finding that I can be much more active. I competed with my coworkers during May to count steps. I was able to log and average 0ver 10,000 steps per day over the entire month. I took a break last week, but I'm ready to get back to some walking this week. See you next in the 270's 😁👍
  16. I'm a newbie so maybe I am obsessing about nothing but I am about 2 weeks post-op and losing weight as expected. I'm not worried about the scale too much but I am so tired of the big middle I had and the thing is - it's still there!! The inches seem to be dropping everywhere EXCEPT my stomach. WTH? Is this normal? is the weight around your middle the last to go? This is depressing.
  17. I track, but every now and then I'll have a "holiday" from tracking. I usually end up gaining 2-3 lbs. over a week or two, and as soon as I start tracking again, it goes back down. (I'm just finishing one of these "holidays".)
  18. Here's what I do. I hate tracking but I've been doing it consistently now for 2 years and that's a big deal for me. I still don't like it but it helps me see I'm making good choices and getting enough protein. At the same time, I DO eat when I'm hungry and I'm not extremely strict about calories. If I'm hungrier one day I eat more that day and I always ask myself if it's head hunger or actual hunger. The other thing I do is take a day off every week or so where I don't track, but I still listen to my hunger signals and make healthy choices. It just gives me a break from tracking. This has worked well for me for 2 years now and I haven't had any real gains and have consistently lost and am still losing, albeit very slowly now. Restriction???

Yes yes and yes! I go through the same thing. I’m 3 1/2 months out and some days a couple bites will fill me up quick(sometimes it’s also because I don’t chew it completely) like today every piece of meat I eat is filling me up so quick. I think the more our stomach heals, it settles on the smaller size it’s supposed to be. But on other days I can eat close to 1200 calories. Between the protein, the milk I drink, snacks, vegetables & fruit. I’m glad I track because then I don’t feel bad about it because it’s all good things I put in. (Except maybe a 60 calorie ice cream snack from Aldi…lol) but for me what you are describing is normal. Can’t say it will be later for now it is.

Bariatric Mexican Pizza CRUST 1 package ground chicken 1/3 envelope of taco seasoning 1 egg 1/4 cup fat free shredded cheese Mix everything for the crust together and air fry at 450 degrees for ten minutes. Spray the pan liberally so it doesn’t stick. Toppings: 1/2 cup taco sauce 1/2 cup refried beans 1/2 cup fat free shredded cheese 4 pickled jalapeño slices, minced Once crust is finished cooking, add toppings. Put back in the air fryer at 450 degrees for five minutes. Once out of the air fryer, let sit for five minutes. Slice into 3 ounce portions. Top with a little fat free Greek yogurt and avocado of you would like. My husband LOVED this. I’m still on soft foods and this really satisfied the Taco Bell craving.

    Caffeine After Surgery

My Dr. said I could go back to my coffee/caffeine habit at about 2-4 weeks post op. Once I was getting all my protein and normal fluids.
  24. Hi I had my RNY 3/16 and I am almost 3 months post op. I have had issues with food taste and food turn-off. I’m not so hungry and despise meat-it is hard to eat and not enjoyable. I have lost 51 pounds to presently at 183 from 233. When I have contacted my nurse and at my last appointment was told that not being hungry is good-eat Protein.< br />
I go to the doctor on 6/7 and had blood work done prior. I am able to get my results and my Ferritin level was high at 230(normal is below 150) ALK phosphates also high 109, MPV & RDW and also high. Apparently with my google med school education I am storing a serious amount of iron! I looked at the symptoms and tiredness and abdominal pain are characteristic, which I do have. I am glad to go to doctor but concerned what is the problem and how do I get rid of Iron buildup. I am stopping my Solo Bariatric Advantage Multi with iron until I see my doctor. Has anyone experienced this?
