    Am i done losing weight?

I'm thinking stall too! its only been 2 weeks.. and you are near the end, so its going to be that much harder now... Someone i know was in a stall for almost 2 months as she approached her goal, she went back to basics... she did the pre-op diet for a few days, then started the post op diet, fluids, soft foods... this helped jumpstart her back to lossing the last 10 pounds... just a thought if you really wanted to shake things up... Congrats to you on your "loss"!!!

    Post Op depression

I've heard others discuss this phenomenon but being the optimist that I am I dismissed it as not being likely to happen to me. Well, I think I was wrong. I'm 18 days out now and am just about to start incorporating solid foods into my diet. But it's a mixed blessing. Prior to this point I could cling to my doctor's post-op instructions to help me make my food decisions. Now I'm about to re-enter the world of normal people faced with normal temptations each and every waking minute. I'm frankly unnerved by the prospect of being physically unable to indulge in a large serving of anything if I feel the desire. Obviously my rational brain knows that's exactly why I got banded, and it's this precise behavior that needs to change if I am ever going to lose weight. But right now, in the early morning when I'm hungry and can't eat much, it just seems like a burden. (And we're not even going to mention the fact that the scale is still stuck at -11 lbs, where it's been for the last 10 days.) Can I have a pep talk, please?

    Almost there...

Hello, thanks Physllser for inviting me. I didnt even realize this forum was here. Allow me to introduce myself. I am 32 yrs old. Mother of three. I live right outside of Nashville TN. I started this whole thing on May 3, I went to Dr Mortons office, got weighed and filled out paperwork. I weighed 197 and am 5'2.5. I had a BMI of 35.5. I also have Rheumatoid Arthritus, polysystic ovaries, along with some blood pressure issues. Because of that I am eligible for surgery. I had to get 2 letters of Medical Necessity, and had my phychicatric evaluation on June 18. I was approved yesterday, and my surgery date is set for July 19. I started my pre op diet today. I am so excited, I want to share it with everyone!!!

  7. Since my opinion of the Realize Band's RealizeMySuccess web site is not very good, I have decided to use this web site instead. Seems a lot more active and user-friendly. I was banded and had a hiatal hernia, plus an umbilical hernia repaired on November 11, 2009. My first fill on Dec 15, 2009, Second on January 19, and third on Feb 16. I think I am a bit too tight from this one and will let them remove a CC next week. That will bring my total fill to 9 CC's, which I think will be just about right. I have been very impressed with Dr. Smith and my husband also chose Dr. Smith to do his band on January 4. Now, we hope to get much healthier and live longer to see our Grandchildren grow up. I started at 362 in my primary care physician's office in late October and today I am at 316.

    24 Hours Post-Op

I was sleeved 9/13/21 and am about 24hours out. All in all, I have no regrets so far. I was a mess going into surgery, couldn’t stop crying and asking my husband if I was making a mistake, but I’m so relieved I did it. I feel like this is the first day of the rest of my life! A few things that I think might help those of you about to go in… 1. When I woke up, pain was about a 7/10, they gave me some meds and I felt much better. Ladies, if you’ve experienced contractions this is a walk in the park. 2. Deep breaths are uncomfortable (doc tells me this is totally normal). They have me blowing into one of those funny tubes to make me fully inflate my lungs to avoid “gunk” as they called it. 3. Minimal nausea (they give you meds that help) and no vomiting. 4. The pain today is about 4 or 5 out of 10. This is not surgical pain from the sleeve, it’s pain from the air they use to inflate your abdomen while they operate. They tell be it’ll subside in the next day or so. 5. They’re having me take 60ml of water/hr (no more) until I get to 500ml which they think will be around 3PM at which point they’ll discharge me. All I’ve tried is room temperature so far but am having no issues. If you made it this far, I hope this was helpful. I’m so thankful to have everyone here that’s always been willing to support and answer questions I have, my goal is to return the favor. Good luck everyone!!

    new guy

alright.. all of my pre-op requirements have been met, and the surgeon's office is faxing my clinicals to the insurance company today. i have requested clarification regarding this - does it mean i'm fully submitted to insurance, or are there more hurdles to jump? either way, i am getting close. my insurance company told me they have a 5-10 day approval process. i am hoping that today's submission is the complete package and i'll have a determination by 2/7. i'm looking forward to being a little more trim on my birthday in late may this year

    Wanted Minnesota Buddies

Yeah it moves kinda slow, i had a 6 month diet wait deal so mine really seemed to creep, but let me tell you once they call to confirm all of the paperwork is good and insurance is good it starts to move.... I think waiting to be scheduled with the pre op with surgeon took longer that was like a 3 week wait.. went to see him April 30th and he had openings as soon as may 8th, i took may 15th and it did fly by even with being on a 10 day liquid diet it was very quick...and now i'm here with cuts on my tummy 6 days after surgery... The surgery was a fear of the unknown, i had never had an operation or been in a hospital so it was scary, some things were better than others experienced others were worse but nothing that makes you like this is too much...just a little uncompfy. I had mine done at methodist st louis park... Rai

    feelin' Blue

my first day of surgery I was reading my post-op diet for the 100th time and I became sad, scared and cried . I wanted to call that damn Dr. and tell him to take this s--t out of me. I was thinking of an excuse to get it out, the same thought came back to me the next day, stupid me I was on the site looking over complications (will never go back there) and I was thinking of the what ifs can happen 5-10 years from now. I wanted this s--t out. I was freaking out and keeping it to myself. I finally told my husband and kids what I was going through and they reassured me I made the right decision. it passed, I am 5 days out and am so excited and ready for this. When you feel like banding was a mistake, think of all the things you will be able to do when you are healthier. I have a goal set for 2008, camping ,hiking with my family and how hot I am going to look in my shorts. ok and my health lol you to will come get through this, I know I will be going through emotional up and downs, but with support, great people from this site you will be ok. god bless you and happy new year SC banded 12/26/07

    feelin' Blue

((((hugs))) I totally know how you feel. I have gone through the exact same feelings. I wish I could eat like everybody else. I wish I could have cream of mushroom Soup chicken and noodles for dinner like my kids had last night. There are so many things that I wish I could have again. BUT....then I think of the consequences of all of my previous actions: 1. my knees crack going up/down the stairs, crack when I sit down, it's an awful feeling (and I am only 33) 2. the intense swelling and pressure in my lower legs/calves 3. the high blood pressure I now have 4. the high cholesterol I now have 5. the lack of sex / intimacy with dh 6. getting out of breath easily 7. kidney problems 8. everything hurts 9. GERD 10. aggravating pre-existing depression There are so many other things that are wrong with me right now ... this is what I get for eating like a horse. I don't want to have these problems anymore. I hope this helps somewhat....

    How Many Carbs A Day?

Well, the general guidelines I got from my doc for my day to day diet includes 10% of total calories can be carbs: 800 calories = 80 carbs. I stalled big time at 3 weeks out. Lasted for six weeks. I finally started by cutting my carbs in half, then I just kept lowering them until I started losing again. It may be a different number for everyone. I think 30 is generally considered low, Although, when i was on an Atkins type diet, 30 was outrageously high. So...do what your body responds to within the bounds of your medical advice. Also, I increased cardio and cut out weights.
  15. Let me start off by saying that I'm always hungry and have been since 3 months out. I am currently one year post op but have been at a stand still for the last 6 months. Now I have gained an additional 10 pounds in 4 weeks. Is there a way to get back on track? I am afraid my stomach has stretched. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Mixed Messages

So I just called the UHC member number and asked if they could give me any information regarding the progress of pre-approval for the sleeve procedure. I was told what information they request from the dr's office, etc. (which I already knew....that wasn't the question!) and then was told I would have to talk to someone in the Care Coordination department. Prior to transferring me, she looked up in the system to see if there was any additional information. In there she found an in-patient pre approval for a surgery 8/31 - 9/1. I'm guessing this might be my date! Except....... Then when she transferred me to Care Coordination, I got NOTHING in the way of information. The best this lady could tell me was that it was still under review. She couldn't tell me if they were going to request more information (since they blindsided me with height/weight requirements for the past 5 years.....that I wasn't told about the two times I called asking about coverage and requirements needed for approval!), or if there was an indication of when an approval would be made. The best she could tell me was I would know when I (or the Dr) was notified via mail or if I (or the Dr) called back to check on the status. REALLY!? Are they using the same computer system? Neither my husband nor I have surgery scheduled (I've NEVER had surgery) and there's nothing wrong with my husband that would require an in-hospital stay, let alone surgery. SO.....I prefer to believe my surgery date is going to be 8/31 and will just wait patiently for the Dr's office to call with the approval and the instructions for what procedures need to be performed prior to the surgery. Has anyone else had this type of encounter with the insurance company? I've never been through anything like this with the insurance company in the 13 years I've had coverage with them, but then the most I've ever had to have covered by them is my visits to the OBGYN and an EKG to see if I have a heart murmur. Other than that, I just pay my $10 copay, and wait for the letter showing the coverage I have and what was paid by insurance on my behalf. (I'm a lucky girl, I know I shouldn't be bitching this much....just anxious to get this started!) 43 years of being overweight, and this tool is presented to me as a MAJOR weapon in my battle against the bulge, and insurance is making me suffer with the waiting game. That's ok, when it's all said and done, I WILL be victorious in this war! Tif
  17. My nut also said to eat 5 to 6 small meals a day, concentrating on Protein first. I did that for the first 5 weeks after surgery and I was steadily losing weight. I went on vacation for 10 days and during that period I did not eat the five to six meals a day. Instead, I would eat Breakfast and dinner. I was staying in a hotel so it was hard to do the 5 to 6 meals a day. When I got back from vacation, even though I did not overeat at all, I had gained 3 pounds. I went back on the five to six meals a day, concentrating on protein and in 2 days I've lost two and a half of the three pounds I had gained. I'm glad I had this experience because it really showed me that eating the five to six meals a day and concentrating on protein really is a big help with weight loss. To sell out or not to sell out

I saw a commercial for a wl product and it was showing all these before and after pics. One guy claimed to have lost 230 pounds in 10 months. I haven't even met a bander who has done that, so I decided to investigate. After googling his name (Scott R??? - I forgot it now), I found his pics advertising SEVERAL different wl products. Even though I knew that had to be true, I felt angry when I saw it. How do these people get away with this stuff? Good job on your decision. Since we've all been there, we can easily imagine how we would feel to be deceived like that. Technically you could take the product now, and then "honestly" claim you took it, but it would still be wrong. Kind of reminds me of Marie Osmond hawking, I forget, is it Nutrasystem or Jenny? Either way, she lost her weight on Dancing With the Stars. Seriously, was no one watching?

    BCBS Federal timing question

well, not sure I can answer that yet - I'm still in the middle of the 3-month diet. As I understand it, my PCP has to file chart notes with the surgeon's office that clearly show the reason for my visit is (and only is) bariatric counseling. I don't think I have to actually lose weight for BCBS, but my surgeon is requiring at least 5% of my body weight lost before surgery. My surgeon's office did give me a piece of paper to give to my PCP that has the correct verbiage on it that her notes need to say. I don't have it anymore as I did give it to her. I have appointments set up every 30 days (so 4 appts total with the beginning one). I started on 2/12 and my final appointment is on 5/12. BTW, it's not a class or anything - just a weigh-in and about 10 minute appt with the doc. Hope that helps!

    BCBS Federal timing question

    Mine took 6-10 days.
  21. So I made the first step today and called the surgeon's office. My insurance officially takes over January 1st of next year so I have a little bit of waiting time to go but they said I could fill out the paperwork. The woman who helped me was really nice and I'm really excited. She said with my BMI I did not have to do the weight loss program but I do have to do the psychiatric evaluation. I've heard some people say that they go back to work within one week but are not supposed to lift more than 10 pounds. I'm a teacher preschool and I'm wondering how long did it take or how long did they say for it take before you could go back to work? Has your doctor is giving you any advice of when you should go back?

    Heartburn?

Protonix went generic. That is what I take. It costs me $10. It's supposed to be as good as Nexium. I don't get heartburn, but I take it with all the other junk I take in the morning. I don't know if I would get it if I didn't take that every morning. I didn't know it does anything to Calcium. My dad had severe osterporosis. I worry about my calcium intake.

Band to Sleeve and other questions!

I know the feeling I'm free of that thing and on my way back to great health. I have a dietician , trainer, and my will. This is much better. I don't want any other weight loss operation only to find out in 4 years that too was a mistake. I'm over it. I'm a size 12 dress loose 14 pant 5'8 and trying to get to A size 8 dress 10 loose pant.

Band to Sleeve and other questions!

Jake, I am in the same situation as you, having had my band for 4 1/2 years and having lost 115 lbs. After more and more problems eating I had an UGI and it turns out nothing will pass through the band, even after complete unfill. My surgeon says that my food gets digested in the enlarged esophagus. I am still not completely sure how that works since I can sometimes feel the food pass through even during the meal, but the UGI showed none of the barium liquid pass through. The band needs to come out. The surgeon wants to do a conversion to bypass but I think a sleeve would be better, although a sleeve is irreversible and leaves you will only a small part of your stomach which could be an issue if you later develop some problems with the stomach such as cancer. My insurance will only cover removal since my BMI is now only 28. I am also considering just the removal since I do not have $10,000-12,000 to pay out of pocket for conversion. I am wondering if I could control myself and keep eating small portions just because of fear that I would gain all my weight back and have to get another surgery in a few years. BTW, I do not really need to loose more weight, maybe 10 more pounds, Will a conversion to sleeve result in even more weight loss or will I be able to maintain only ? Is is possible to leave more of the stomach if a patient already lost most of the goal weight ? TX

    Band Or Bypass

Do a search of all the boards on this site and look for threads with this issue as the subject...... quickly this was my reason. I have two RL close friends that both had the RNY one is 4 years out and one is 2. Friend that is 4 years PO has gained back almost all of the 120 lbs she lost because she never suffered from the Dumping and could eat anything. She is horrible about taking her vitimins and subsequently suffered a lot of depression mostly due to regaining her weight after all the money and crap she went through......... she is considering getting banded now. Friend 2, has lost over 120lbs and just had a tummy tuck and boob lift and looks awesome. She stays away from the dumping foods and has done extremely well.................. I knew RNY wasn't for me because... 1. I want all my innards to stay intact and there if I need them later in life. 2. Taking 4-6 weeks off work is not an option, with my band I had surgery on Thursday and was back to my desk job on Monday. My boss has no clue as I just took 2 days of PTO and that was it. 3. My issue is portion control, and I want to be able to get a fill 1, 2, 10 years down the line if I see myself being able to eat to much, where as with the RNY you CAN restretch your pouch 4. Insurance paid for it. 5. It can be unfilled in times of medical need or pregnacy 6. Any general surgeon can remove it in an emergency.. vs the bypass which is forever. To answer the weight question... Just do a search for BOO, JulieinNYC, Neal )OUsooner, and many many many others they have lost well over 100 lbs and in some cases over 200 lbs... My doc says average weight loss is 1-3 pounds per week........ so that is 52-150+ in a year........ and in my book that is fast enough Good luck in whatever decision you make. Afterall it is YOUR journey and no one elses.
