    Work in progress

Hi, my name is Kim Vance. I was banded on December 1st, 2009. Dr. Holloway did my surgery and I would recomended him to anyone. So far I have lost 30lbs and counting. I see Dr. Holloway or Dot every 2 weeks, just to chart my progress.

    Question about pain pump

I had one inserted into my abdomen, I didn't even really know what it was at first. But, I do remember coming out in recovery moaning like baby, this thing was good and I guess it may be why I didn't really need pain medications (or the additional ones from Rx). I was very worried about pulling that thing out, but read directions and it will go just fine. Go slow, the first tug is the hardest. Mine had the added complication that the latex tubing was causing an allergic reaction so for the first week or so I had a red outline of the pump on my stomach as a reminder. It seems intense to pull out and it is surprisingly long, but it was easy. I was worried it was not working because it took a couple of days or so to notice any deflation in the ball.
  3. Hi everyone I am currently 26 years old and I am due to have gastric bypass surgery on Tuesday December 18th. I have been told by my nutritionist to go on a two-week pre-operation diet only consisting of Medi fast protein shakes. I was very strict on the diet until tonight I completely broke down and had a 12 inch italian bread with scrambled eggs in it. I feel completely guilty. But I was starving due to the fact that I have not had any solid foods since December 4th. I was feeling really emotional/irritable and overall starving. I started my weight-loss Journey at 304lbs. Today I weigh 290. During my 6 months of nutritional monitoring I was not exactly doing my best I did not lose much weight because I was not consistent .But just on the shake diet that I have been on I have lost a total weight of 7 pounds. I feel so quilty like I ruined my whole diet. I know the whole point of this is to shrink our liver size which mine was 19cm which is over the normal by like 3cm from what I have read. Have any of you screwed up like this before? And do you think me being very strict for the remainder of the 5 days will do me any good after I cheated horribly tonight 😟

    Pain in back

My back bothered me more post-op than my front! And now I'm almost 2 weeks out and still have some soreness. Some of the pain is definitely from the gas, but some of it is from how they position you on the operating table, how you "favor" your incisions and stress different muscles, etc. I can feel the trigger points in my back that need to be released and have been working on them, but so far, no good. But much better now than last week!
  5. My surgeon only makes us do the liquid diet three days prior to the surgery but it is "strictly" liquid on those days. I had Thanksgiving dinner four days before my surgery.

    Protein

Keep trying different ways of getting in your Protein. Those protein goals take time to build up to so don't panic if you don't meet them right away. Keep trying protein drinks/powders until you find what you like. I tried at least 10 different ones as a trial run pre-op and I've probably gone through another 4 -5 post-op. A few I still have occasionally, but there are 2 I consistently use; Isopure unflavored and CVS whey protein vanilla flavor. I don't think I hit my protein goals until somewhere between weeks 1 and 2 post-op and that was just the basic goal of 60gms. I know hit between 80 - 100 everyday. Unflavored powder that can be mixed with Soups is a nice break from the sweet drinks. Mixing them with Water helps you meet you Fluid goals and lesson the super sweet taste. If you are allowed yogurt, 0% greek yogurt will also cut the sweet taste. Try mixing the Protein Powder with water and a bit of greek yogurt until it's a thinner drinkable consistency. The greek yogurt (I use FAGE 0%) adds a bit more protein and the slightly sour taste will cut some of the sweet of the protein powder.

My case goes to insurance today!

I have Atnea as well and it only took dr. Less than two weeks to call me back!!! I was surprised at how fast it went. Good Luck!!
  8. Day 2 of my liquid diet was like that. Luckily for me though, my program only required 3 days of the clear liquid diet immediately prior to surgery. Since you still have over a week to go, if it doesn't slow down I'd call your surgeon just like Chelly suggested.
  9. Ouch! Talk to your doctor, stat! I had stomach discomfort/pain several weeks out from surgery and realized that my (generic) Protonix prescription had run out. Once I got it refilled, the discomfort went away and stayed away. Could it be that simple for you? It's worth asking. Good luck!
  10. Because I had a 2 for 1 (actually 3 for 1 but that's another story) surgery, I had to have one of those nasty rubber hose drains. I had to redress it each day and I was starting to get worried as it started looking awful, especially compared to the other 4 incisions. But I have no fever or nausea and am able to keep things down so I just decided to ride it out. So I had my follow up today and they thought the big incision looked great, so much so that they removed the drain, added a few new stitches, re-dressed the incision and sent me on my way. Sort of funny how something so gross to me made them smile. So if anyone else needs a drain (and you probably will if you have anything else done at the same time) don't worry about it. It was stapled and stitched in place but aside from a minor twinge or two, I would have never known what he was going when he was removing it. I was laying pretty flat on the table so the DD mountain range between him and me kept me from having to actually see what the was working on! Surgery one week ago today and feeling a bit stronger each day. Getting all hopeful that this wasn't a stupid bad decision after all.
  11. I lost 22 pounds 2 weeks preop and 17 in 7 weeks post op. It's normal. A "3week stall" is normal. Losing every single day is not normal. Losing 10 pounds/week is not normal. You are doing fine. Just keep getting your fluids and Protein and exercise and you will lose. It took years to put on weight, and you certainly won't lose it all in a few weeks. This is a lifelong process, it won't happen overnight and you shouldn't stress over.

    Motivation

Weaning your self off carbs is another thing you can strat. I had a major headache during pre-op from the low carb deit , then from the no caffine. I was a big coffee and deit coke drinker, spent a week with the withdrawl headache. Congrats on getting your date, it will be here befoe you now it.

    Weight and Relationships

It's unlikely that love will come knocking on your front door. Here is how (at the age of 55) I found love after being thrown out (divorced) a second time. I took a year off from the relationship scene to get my head together and to find out who I was when no one else is telling me what to do, think. eat, or like. I had to find the true me to be able to present myself correctly in the search for love. I got on Craig's list, back before it was a pimp site, and put an ad in the personals. I told it plainly who I was and what I am and what my baggage was. I even mentioned that I was heavy. I got 93 responses that I had to filter through. I eliminated those that sounded obviously perverted, those that sent below the belt photos, and those that were just out of high school, and those that seemed uncompatable. I reduced the list to ten and started meeting guys in public places before giving out my address and phone. Sure, I dated a couple of frogs, but gentleman number three came across as dignified and gentle and had many similar interests as I had, and he had been thrown away twice, too. We have been together over eight years and plan on going into our old age together. He is now 64 and I am just around the corner from 63. He never asked me to change anything (not even my weight) and I have never asked him to change anything (not even his smokig). He is very tall and thin. We look like a pencil and and apple when we are together. He has been supportive of my weight loss surgery, and our love has grown stronger. So, I have said all of that to say this.......to find someone who will love you for who you are, you have to be bold enough to put yourself out there - as you are. If you join a dating site, definitely mention that you are on a doctor supervised weight loss journey. You will likely get someone who is on that journey also or is at least open-minded about folks in our predicament. I don't think you have to be at your goal weight before you start dating. Just go for it.

    Advice Please!

I felt this way around the same time (I'm 5 weeks out now). Went through a period where I was just turned off by food. It has gotten better within the last couple of days. I think my issue was more emotional than physical. Sent from my iPad using VST

    Advice Please!

I'm 3 weeks post op and have no energy at all. I know it takes awhile to get it back but id like to know how my levels are looking. My surgeon doesn't do bloodwork till a year post op. I see my PCP on the 14th to go over meds and I think I'm going to request that he check my levels of everything.
  16. Hey sleevers! I'm looking for some advice! I am 4.5 weeks post op... My first month was awesome! No nauseous, no vomiting, no pain, minimal heartburn. Starting yesterday I have just been feeling off. Very tired, kind of queasy, and totally turned off by all food... As in pretty much not eating anything. Anyone else experience this or know what I should do? I was told I didn't need to take a b-12, but I'm thinking maybe it will help my energy level? Is this true?

    What do you think?

Remember that the 1st 6 weeks is really for healing, and that should be your focus. The weight loss is a pleasant side-effect. Please don't worry about this at this early point. Start practicing taking the long-term point of view, don't rush things, and stay focused on health. I promise you will be happier and healthier, and you will lose weight. This is not a race. You are doing great, don't jeopardize it by getting in a big hurry. Good luck! Cindy
  18. I am struggling with using my machine. I have only been using the machine for 3 weeks now. I get text messages daily saying that I'm not meeting my daily requirements. I called the respiratory therapist and she got the approval from the Dr. to lower my max pressure down to 13. I feel like I'm suffocating. I have two weeks until I meet with the nutritionist to be put on my pre op diet. I'm really worried that if I can't get this worked out I will be denied my surgery since I didn't do everything requested by the Dr. HAs anyone ever heard of being denied because of this?
  19. Scheduled my first fill for 9/11. Vacation is on 9/27. Maybe I should reschedule for when we get back the next week. What do you think? Thanks, my little lapband family! :cursing: I love you all.

    Gallbladder And Vsg

I had it all done same time. It's good you're getting it out. I have a history of large gallstones and had a couple attacks that sent me to the hospital. I guess I had gotten used to my gallbladder pain because..... The doctor said my GB was inflamed, enlarged and infected and was STUCK to my stomach. There was evidence of recent attacks and even pancreatitis. I had no idea it was that bad. It's so funny to be 3 weeks away from having this major surgery and compared to how I lived for so long I have basically no stomach pain. So you'll probably be better off after surgery. How 'bout that?

    Type 2 diabetes

Hi @shayshay85 I had RNY Gastric Bypass surgery on May 20th of this year. I had some complications during my surgery, so I stayed in the hospital a week after surgery. By the end of that week I was no longer on 2 oral diabetes meds I previously took (Metformin and Glipizide), and 2 types of insulin (Minimum 4 injections daily). My A1c went from 9.2 pre-surgery, to 6.1 post-surgery. I have another A1c test coming up on the 17th, and if it's 6.0 or below, my Dr. will consider my diabetes in remission. If I gain weight again, it's most likely I would become insulin resistant again. I have had fairly normal blood sugar readings ever since. I can only speak for myself, but I do believe others here have had similar experiences, and are off all or greatly reduced dosages of their diabetes meds. I'm sure some of them will share their experiences too. I never thought I'd see a day where I didn't have to give myself multiple injections. It's been wonderful, and I'm pretty close to not having to monitor my blood sugars anymore too! My Diabetes specialist told me that herself. Good luck with everything!

new here, 2 weeks after surgery

I am also 2wks post-op. I am really trying to stay away from carbs also, but I'm not seeing any weight loss. I did lose 15lbs the 1st week though. My 1st adjustment is in 4 weeks. Will that help my weight loss any? Eating and chewing my food slowly is really going well. Kentucky Fried Chicken has some great roasted strips. CHEW, CHEW, CHEW. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this normal?

I got my first fill today

YAY! Congrats! Sounds like you have a good doc. You're right to be cautious. Take it easy & do exactly what he says. & remember, it sometimes takes 2-3 weeks for a fill to really kick in. So have patience. Good luck!

    Walking

Before piling on the weight I loved to walk and could walk for miles. Now I'm getting back into walking (using my FITBIT) and I must say I'm enjoying it again. Loving that I'm not huffing and puffing climbing the stairs. I'm averaging 6400 steps (2 1/2 miles) during the week and 800 steps (3 1/2 miles) on the weekends. I hope to increase my steps and miles by the end of the month. Who's walking and how many miles and steps do you take daily?
  25. Hi I had the full gastric bypass 8 years ago . I lost 255lbs . Anyways, I had one child pre op who is now 14. And 14 years later I am now pregnant again . I still can't eat large meals . And after pasta my sugar reads 5.8 for pre diabetes . Even when I was 450lbs I never had any medical issues whatsoever . So it's a bit nerve wrecking for me. I'm also afraid of the glucose test, I heard it could kill bariatric patients . Anyone else have anything similar ?
