    Keeping your shakes fresh

I think it depends on the doctors' instructions. My surgeon told me to avoid them during the first 1-3 weeks, because, excess gas in the stomach could put pressure on the staple lines, and cause a dreaded leak. After the 1-month post-op, he said that I could use them if they didn't give me discomfort. I know of people that haven't used them again, and others that have used them since day 1 post-op. YMMV.

    Stricture

I had two - one at four weeks out, the next at eight weeks out. The "fix" is easy-peasy, and you'll feel better right away. strictures happen to about 5% of RNY patients. They can also happen in sleeve patients, but they're pretty rare with VSG. and yes - you can live without food for quite awhile, so it's fine if they can't get you in until next week. On the other hand, you can only live a couple of days without fluid - so they'd need to get you in ASAP. That's why they asked...

I love not eating much it’s great! I felt same way wondered if I’d loose to much pre op I did put some on wish I’d not thought that way I’d be lower now then I am! It was a mental struggle for a few weeks follow surgeon and don’t follow your own plan there the pro’s ! I finely feel I will be done with my weight for life!

    March 2022 surgery buddies

Hi all! I'm booked in for surgery next week, so I'd love to be a March buddy! I'm having a sleeve gastrectomy on the 10th, so only 5 days to go. Felling pretty anxious today about everything, but hoping that I get back to feeling as excited and positive I have over the last few weeks since I found out my date. I hope those who have already had their surgery are doing well and that recovery is going ok, and good luck to all those who are still to come this month xx

Hi all, this is my first post, but I've been reading lots on the site over the past few weeks and months - it's been so helpful! I'm booked in for a VSG next week, and up until now I've been really excited for it and feeling positive. However as of this morning I feel really anxious, have cried a few times and feel generally really unsettled. I think i'm scared that something is going to prevent me from being able to have surgery, and I can't snap out of it. I wondered if anyone else had felt like this, and/or had any tips to help me get refocused into a positive frame of mind?

    Food Before and After Photos

Love all these mashed potato accented meals! Yum! Do you all make them from scratch? Always find them a lot of work to make home made. Traditionally whipped kind, that is... Lots of salad + soups this week. Find salads so refreshing and soups satisfying calories with savory tender meats...

Hi there! I just had surgery 5 days ago. Congratulations to use both I guess lol Post op has been a little rough for me but today is sooooo much better. I keep remembering the gas issues will subside soon enough the rumbles create crazy pain. My gas was all is my stomach cavity area. It’s also been slow going with the fluids but I just try to sip what I can. If water is the only thing that feels good that day I sip that every few minutes with some Miralax in it. This first week just experiment with clear liquids and ease until Full if you can’t seem to get it all in. also alternating on whether hot or cold feels better on your tummy. Heat pad helps wonders! Good luck and take it easy if you can.

    May Surgeries - check in!

Awesome progress! Congrats to you!! So jealous!!! I have lost like 73. Slow going due to my long a** stall! But I'm working on it (along with the dietician). Trying to figure out why this stall is even happening and why so long. But still sticking to plan and doing well when it comes to my diet and exercise.

    Stricture

I am 5 weeks post op, and am in phase 2 of my eating schedule (soups with small chunks primarily). I was doing fine until yesterday. Last night my food got stuck in my throat. I had to use the “two finger method” several times over the course of an hour to resolve it. The same thing happened after breakfast (watery grits) and lunch (cottage cheese) today. I called my doctor and was told I probably have a stricture. If so, he told me I will need an endoscopy and a balloon stretch to open the stricture. After the current blockage passes, he told me to try to see if pre-op liquids would pass. If so, he will schedule the procedure next week. If not, I will need to go in tonight to avoid dehydration. Has anyone else dealt with this?

    Psychiatric Evaluation done... Finally.

650 & 200 questions??? Jeez... I had my psych appointment last week and it was nothing like that. I filled out a couple of papers and talked to the psychologist for about 20 minutes, that was it. She said I'm good to go and she doesn't need to see me again.

  15. I am 3 months out and have 3 small meals and 2 snacks. Breakfast - 75 gms low fat Greek yogurt and some berries or passion fruit Lunch - 1/2 cup soup or meat stew Snack - 25 gms ham or some deli meat rolled with cheese or cream cheese Dinner - 50 gms fish or seafood in a homemade sauce Snack - melba toast or thin cracker with pate or blue cheese or 20 gms cashew nuts I drink milky coffees and am mostly getting up to 60 gms of protein. It took me about 10 weeks to get to this goal. { I also detest protein drinks. } I am overestimating my calories because I don't usually manage to eat all my food. I estimate it to be 600 - 800 a day. Hope this helps

After surgery am I doomed to a life of throwing up???

My love I am about 4 weeks post op and as of yet I haven’t thrown up. Only time I felt nauseous was eating my multivitamin chewable. I eat small bites and take my time.

Why round three? Did your surgery get cancelled? That’s worse then doing it once. I know we will be on liquids after so I have to keep drinking. I just made some broth because I think it’s the sweetness that’s getting to me from the protein shakes.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I have to do 5 shakes a day with nothing else. 800 calories, 75 g of protein is what the shakes equal. Round three of doing this liquid diet. Day three of this round.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I’m supposed to have four protein shakes per day. I can have up to two sugar free popsicles and low sodium broth. I just have to tough it out for three more days.
  20. I am 7-8 weeks post-op. I never get enough protein! The shakes were no problem before surgery--but I cannot find one now that I don't take one swallow and not turn green! Personally- I figure a routine is further down my life's road. I'm trying to figure out what hurts when I eat, what makes me nauseated, etc. Time for a regimen later. I think if you are losing, you are ok (for now.) Do you want to set a goal? Wait until fall. Your tummy will be healed by then, your doc will tell you how your labs look, and you can set a goal/regimen for getting through the holidays... Just my 2 cents worth. (one more thing-be kind to your tummy.)

After surgery am I doomed to a life of throwing up???

Okay--here I am, the "fly in the ointment." I am 7 weeks post-op. I get nauseated quite a bit, really every day. My doctor says it isn't unusual, some people do. My advice? There are a TON of different meds for that. Had me on a patch when I woke up, then gave me pills. which didn't help a lot, so then he changed it, and I'm all good! He said it would eventually go away. But as long as I have meds to counteract it, I'm fine!

    Weight Gain

    ^^^ I can't believe I didn't catch that! I just re-read the OP's message and ...yep!...right on time for the infamous three-week stall!

    4 weeks post op

I too had the same issue. About 3 weeks after my surgery I stopped losing for almost 2 weeks. I googled and found out that it is common to have a stall 3 weeks post op. After the stall I have continued to lose weight at about 1lb. every other day. Hang in there!
  24. I am 4 weeks PO now, but feeling very worried, since last week I started taking vitamins, it may be a coincidence or not but the scale is broken, it was very nice to see one pound or half of one gone every day but for the last 8 -10 days the scale does not want to move, I even gain one or 2 pounds, it is driving me nuts!. I finally can take the 64 oz of water, I am eating 2 ounces of food 3 times a day and my snacks are liquids or 2 oz of yogurt. I am walking 60 minutes in the treadmill every other day. I am making the 60gr protein per day even taking those horrible tasting protein drinks. What does the scale want from me?!
  25. Hi. I'm not in your target demographic, but I dislike seeing posts asking for help that don't get a response. At 3 months my program was 3 meals a day, no snacks. Meals consisted of 3oz protein, 1oz veggies, sometimes with a smidgen of a starch. The protein was usually chicken, pork, beef, often with a touch of flavorful sauce, but in a pinch things like cheese, beans. While I didn't do snacks, if I got hungry I would do SF popsicles, this way I had flavor and 5 calories to give my stomach something to do. SF popsicles were a life savor for me early on, so I tended to lean on them a bit later too. Gosh, I think I'll by a box next grocery trip. There was a time at about 2 years post-op that I was binge running (about 90 miles a week) where my plan was increased to 6 meals per day plus a protein shake. I hated it, I felt like you that I was constantly eating, about the only time I wasn't was when I was running. Oh, I'm not saying you should do my plan. Many people I knew back in the day did 3 meals and 3 snacks. Many did protein drinks for a meal or even two. I think the primary thing is they ate to plan to be successful, just as you're trying to do. You have a good goal working to conform your eating to plan. keep at it. Good luck, Tek
