  1. The main difference is since my sleeve did not get revised, I don't have the tightness when food hits my sleeve like before. Also you heal much faster at 2.5 weeks I can eat anything I've tried so far. This week I've had chicken and even meatloaf. I still chew forever because I don't know how long it takes my small intestines to heal. I've lost 16lbs since surgery. Weight loss is slower the second time around, but I expected that. 2. I'm looking forward to the day when I don't have to order the "cowboy cut" of prime rib just to slake my appetite! My idea of culinary heaven will be the day I can eat a few ozs. of prime rib, 1/3 of my baked potato and leave there, fully satisfied, to the same extent that the 24 ouncer used to satisfy me. I'm one week post-op so hunger is not an issue with me at this time, just dreams of revised standards of normalcy as it pertains to my new eating habits.

I have Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and I am in Texas... totally beside myself still after getting my surgery date in less than a week.... here's how things went...pretty much in a nutshell.... I went in for my consult on 1/23/14, 1/27/14 had my endoscopy and 1/28/14 was called with approval and surgery date of 2/10/2014. I really don't even know how to "feel" I was NOT expecting to get approved so fast especially since this is a revision from a RNY Gastric Bypass. I am still in disbelief that my approval happened so fast...

    Cant keep anything down??

Glad to hear everything is going well! I have had the same symptoms as you for about a week now. I haven't had a fill in about 4 months and all of sudden, seems like it got tighter. I went back on fluids for a while and all is well now. I had a "stuck episode" one day last week (steak.. big NO NO!) .. and I am pretty sure I irritated my band and it was swollen. At any rate, I am relieved taht things are back to normal now. I am self pay and really cannot afford to have a revision if the need arises... Keep in touch.. Hope all goes well from here on out.. and even with the aggrevation........... WOULD DO IT AGAIN in a heartbeat! My life is soooo much better, even though I am not at goal yet. But I will get there. As some of you said, have had a lot of stress and set backs, but we must keep pressing on. Hope to see "LESS OF YOU" in the near future! God Bless!
  5. Hi all, Well the new Dr office called and they are submitting my paperwork for the band to sleeve revision for June 28th. I am a total basket case now. I don't know why, I loved my band when it was working. My major problem is that I can eat everything now, and I do, and I LOVE it. I love having bagels for Breakfast again, and bread with my Pasta, and my hot dogs on buns! Oh and that nice COLD beer when it was 95 degrees out on Saturday! What is wrong with me? I feel like a kid in a candy store, going crazy because I think that when the sleeve is done, it will be like the band again. Please tell me I am CRAZY!!! I know i have to watch my carbs and follow the rules, but for real, why am I thinking this is the end of the world. I do have one major concern, since my band is totally empty, and I have a huge appetite, what is the pre-op diet like, if there is one for band to sleeve revisions? I know when I have to I can do this, but I just want to get a jump start on the Protein, and no carbs, any advice? Thanks, Patti

    Any August 2017 Sleevers?

    Why so many sleeves

Bypass was once the gold standard of weight loss surgeries up until a few years ago, when sleeve took over. It's easier for surgeons to perform, it's cheaper, and a lot of people are afraid of the bypass. Thus, sleeve is currently the most popular weight loss surgery. I went with bypass because I had GERD prior to surgery. Bypass usually improves if not outright cures GERD, whereas sleeve can make it worse (doesn't happen to everyone - and some people say their GERD even improved after getting sleeved, but the risk of having it get worse was too high for my comfort, so I chose bypass). bypass is the stronger of the two surgeries, but sleeve is close. And yes, you have more options for revision after sleeve, but then, very few people who have bypass get theirs revised. honestly, they both have their pros and cons. There are some health conditions (like GERD) that would make one surgery more appropriate for you than the other, but barring that, it really comes down to personal preference. They're both good surgeries and you'll find many examples on here of people who've been very successful with both. I love my bypass and would choose it again if I had to make the choice today.

    I need so much help!

This just sounds awful! So sorry. You're a warrior, though! Hove hung in. You're here. Posting. Never give up!!! So when I had my initial consult with my bariatric surgeon she said the sleeve is very much a middle of the road procedure, "if you're not where you want to be or at the goal I've set for you, you can always revise to a band or RNY." So there ya go. You have surgery options. I got the sleeve so I would never diet again and I don't. I obviously wasn't ever very good at it. Lol. I don't how to advise you on that....keep in touch!

I worried about the same thing and now I weigh 129 pounds. My normal weight is 125 but a gained a few when they took all my fill out for a revision surgery. But I'm losing the extra pounds fast and will be back to my "normal" 125 in no time. Have hope! If you work with your band, it will work for you!

    2017 MGB patient's!

Hi, I am going under the knife on Jan 30. Quite nervous about the slice and dice option. No going back from there. Had a band put in in 2007. Lost around 50kg but have put it back on. It was the hitting of my starting weight that triggered the decision. Plus all the things slim people didn't experience such as difficulty going to the toilet, breaking chairs, having no one sit beside you on the train, not fitting into plane seats, sweating, etc. Had a revision about 10 years ago which was open surgery, which has come around to bite me on the bum. When the surgeon goes in to remove the band, he might not be able to do the SAGB due to scar tissue. He won't know until he goes in. I am grateful for the band because it took me nearly 20 years to get back up to where I am now, even though it was often through bulimic behaviour. Me and my 3 siblings all had bands done about the same time. One sister is the only success story, with our brother dying last year through weight complications. He expected miracles from the band without the personal effort involved. I fell into the same trap but did not revert to the easy-eat stuff based on ice cream and milk which he did. Instead I pushed my body to the point where my pouch and oesaphagus are stretched. I can eat a normal meal and not feel it. Fears? Post op discipline. If I had the courage and self discipline to say no to myself in this area of my life, I would not be at this point. So the big unknown is will I F it up with my wrong-headedness. A personal challenge we all face. (Not helped by almost pathologically hating Many of the 'good foods' ????
  13. Hi Bebaeg, Thank you so much for asking. I had my revision on May 9. I’ve lost 33-ish pounds. I get stuck in the middle of the next 10 pounds, so right now I’m fluctuating between 264 and 266. When I first stalled, I realized that I was severely constipated. I’m finding that that happens a lot. Unfortunately, the solution leads to the opposite problem of diarrhea. 🙄 I’m grateful for what I’ve lost, but it’s still frustrating.

    Insulin Worries after DS

From what I have seen, you may or may not be off of insulin and meds immediately - I think your surgeon is just being optimistic and won't actually discharge you without verifying your status. My wife was diabetic, just short of being insulin dependent and under treatment for it for around twenty years, and it took her the better part of a year to be fully off all of diabetic meds. The surgeon explained that generally, the longer one has been under treatment, the longer it takes to get off of the meds, though there are some long term diabetics who leave the hospital free of all meds, even with just a sleeve or RNY rather than the stronger DS. Her diabetes is still in remission 15-16 years later, despite some subsequent regain and losses. A few years ago, we talked to a woman in our support group who had an RNY some twenty years prior, and now her diabetes was coming out of remission with only some moderate regain, so she was in line to get that revised into a DS to knock it out for good. So, it is still very much worth getting the surgery even if you don't immediately go into remission. Note that I am referring to the "traditional" BPD/DS, which is known to have a 98-99% success rate with T2 diabetes, rather than the simplified SIPS/SADI/"Loop DS", which is not as well established.
  15. Well it was a very long process for me to get to this point. I had a Lap-Band installed in 2007 I lost nearly 140lbs. but right at 2 years in 2009 it slipped. So I had to have revision surgery, during which the surgeon nicked my hepatic vein. Long story short the band was removed they were able to save me and of course over the next few years the weight all came back. Then in late 2013 I decided to get the gastric sleeve, date was set insurance was approved but as the day approached I chickened out. I just couldn't get past the idea of something happening again. So fast forward to Oct. 7th 2014. With the support of my wife who I could not have done this with out I now have had the gastric sleeve. I started at 405 lbs. and my goal is to get down to 215 lbs. over the next 1 and a half to 2 years. To everyone who has had this surgery done already good luck and don't look back you will continue to feel better every day. and to those still waiting to have it done, please do not be discouraged by what happened to me. The chances of it happening are like hitting the lottery (now if I could just find the right lottery numbers LOL). And as soon as you wake up in recovery no matter how crummy you feel you will still have it in the back of your head that you just won the biggest battle of your life. Good luck to everyone.....
  16. Hi kaykay, welcome to our forums! I was a revision from the band to the sleeve, so I went in expecting to be in a significant amount of pain after I got out of surgery. However, I was pleasantly surprised in that I found there was very, very minimal pain. I hardly took any of the pain medicine, and when I did, it was more to help me sleep the first couple of nights than anything.

  18. I think I missed Want2BMeAgain ... I've asked on the floor but no one seems to know who I am talking about so perhaps I missed her? There are 2 other women here today - one for a sleeve from Alaska and one for a revision -- they had not heard about VST ... they have now! Have also met Soon2BSkinny - she was up walking around this morning when we got here. She seems to be doing well. I think it's great to get to know people from here!
  19. I've heard of this...with devastating consequences. It happens most frequently with a very loose band that allows the stomach to slip up through the band causing death to the entrapped tissue, my surgeons PA warned me of this at the time of my complete unfill, which is ludicrous since my band wasn't even on my stomach, lol. You're very lucky. Are you going to revise?
  20. Hi Bernadette, Sounds like you went through quite an ordeal! I'm so sorry... It also sounds like your band and mine were erosion-twins. UGH. They had to cut my band out of my stomach in a few places, it was so eroded... and just like you, I didn't know anything was really "wrong" other than the leak... so I too might have gotten to a point of no return (major infection and/or death) had this information not come to light when I went in for my sleeve revision/band removal. It was bitter sweet having the band out, and not getting the sleeve, but I must say, that was for the best. Especially hearing how it all went for you, that was me, and that was some SCARY stuff, as you know very well. :frown1::svengo: I'm on the schedule as of today, with Dr. Aceves office, for Friday, January 22. It's starting to solidify in my brain... I'm doing this. I must admit, with the band BS and such, I'm scared, but excited. I really hope everything goes smooth as silk. Having gone to Dr. A for my band removal, he'll know exactly what he's dealing with on my tummy, etc, and this helps ease my mind a bit. Please keep your fingers and toes crossed for me... and let me know how you are. I'm just so sorry you went through all that pain. I didn't even get the sleeve when band was removed, and my pain was pretty intense as well... Chat soon! :crying::crying:

    Complications after Sleeve Surgery

Having the band out that long, will decrease your risk of complications substantially. Of course, they can still happen, but your stomach has time to heal from the band removal. I had my revision in one procedure, and did have a leak due to the damage from the band that was not known until my surgeon got in there. As for the recovery for the band vs. the sleeve. The band sucked recovery wise for me because of the port placement. As for the sleeve, the first 2 days post-op were pretty great, my actual pain was minimal still had the nasty gas from the CO2 gas they use, but nothing that was not manageable. Due to my leak, and leak repair surgery, my recovery was completely different than everyone elses. But, no lifting for 6 weeks, I wasn't allowed to lift anything over 10 pounds. Incisional hernias are still an issue with lap procedures. Plus, you do not want to stress the staple line of the sleeve. Most patients experience fatigue or exhaustion for a couple of weeks post-op. Staying hydrated will be your focus, and staying on the post-op diet. If you have any other specific questions feel free to contact me via the private message system here. Thanks, Lan. I just happen to click on this thread tonight.
  22. Join facebook and friend dr r rutledge. He invented the MGB and will have great advice. I would get a 2nd opinion on your surgeons recommendation.. you could always revise the MGB to be changed. You will lose your stomach and lose the possibility of changing back. Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App
  23. So I had MGB 8months ago. I have been getting bouts of diarrhea and after insisting to speak to the doctor over the phone (since my appointment is not until end of feb), doctor thinks it might be IBS. I'm down to 114lbs and most probably this weight loss will continue so now doctor is recommending revision to RNY!!!! This is crazy.. has anyone been through this before?? If I will have to go under the knife again I would prefer to get a total reversal but doctor thinks a reversal is not an option!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Victorious Valentines - Feb. 08 - MASTER THREAD!

Hello Victorious Valentines!!! Wow it's been 3 years now... amazing. I never made my 3 year Bandiversary but I just thought I'd check in to see how everyone's doing. Angie, that is so fantastic!! You're very fit and running a marathon?? I can't even imagine that at this time. I'm just getting started with the running and I am going to do the Susan G Komen, Race for the Cure on May 7th. It will be my first timed event ever. I'm pretty excited and it's keeping me juiced to getting on that treadmill. I'm not going to beat myself up on worrying too much about "times" right now because I don't have anything to beat. I will continue with this and do a 5k every few months to keep me doing my thing. I was revised to the VSG on Sept. 15th, 2010. I ended up gaining all my weight back after being banded. Nearly 60 Lbs even and true enough I had some complications with my band. I just don't want to go into detail, that is not the spirit of this support board. I just wanted to say that I'm doing really well and I'm the lowest weight I've been since being in High School. I'm even fitting some of my HS outfits I've saved over the years!!! I'm beside myself and very happy!!! I'm very close to Onederland and it's been alluding me... so I think I need to work a little harder to get there. I am also about 50 Lbs to goal. Good luck to all!! I sometimes cruise by here to see how the Valentines gals are doing. It's quieted down a lot, but would be nice to see if anyone more can chime in and say how they're doing. All the best to all of you!!! Congrats to you Angie and Cocoa for you did AWESOME with your bands!!!!
