Christmas time IS harder as a vet

You're doing great Fiddleman. You've reached goal and are maintaining you weight and fitness level. I lost 115lbs this year and still want to lose 35lbs more. This holiday season has been a bit of a challenge, as my wife is entertaining again ( I spent the last three years recovering from late year surgery. It is my tradition to make certain items for our family and friends. My wife loves my coquito (Spanish egg nog- made with condensed milk, coconut cream, and lots of alcohol and my fried chicken, and my specialty cocktails). Since we entertained large crowds, it was easy to taste my handy work to make sure it was suitable for my guests. Last year was not an issue but this one was. I didn't go over my daily calorie limits, but definitely tried things I have not tasted since my pre-op days.
  2. Hi! I'm only day 5 post op but have a question... When you make your protein drink it's at least 8 oz right? Is this a meal replacement for you or a snack in addition to your meals? Confused on how someone said they can take a Greek yogurt and glass of Oj with genpro in morning.. Wouldn't that be too much for stomach?? Thanks for your insight Sent from my XT1585 using the BariatricPal App Hi! I put one scoop of Genepro (30 gram protein equiv) in about a quarter cup of OJ. So overall very little volume. I take it almost like a shot glass of alcohol. At first I had to take smaller sips. I also have a standard serving of Greek yogourt and my multivitamins in the morning with it. Hope that clarifies! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Thanks for that, that makes sense. I was thinking you did 8oz of oj. Gonna try genpro, doing unjury now and I can taste it Sent from my XT1585 using the BariatricPal App
  3. I have been considering the lap band for a long time, and attended my first seminar back in January. I went to my PCP, got a referral, got my psychological evaluation, met with the surgeon, and then just... stopped. I think that it was a combination of getting a bunch of confusing insurance statements that made me think I was thousands of dollars in the hole, and a consultation with a bariatrician who seemed to think I would fail no matter what. I decided that I wasn't in the right head space for a lap band. And yet, several months later-- I have realized that without consciously trying, I've given up carbonated beverages, cut WAY back on alcohol (from 2-3 drinks per night to maybe 1-2 per week), slowed my eating pace, and started eating at home almost all of the time. I've also decided that my health is worth spending money on-- I'm a big saver, and it is very frightening for me to spend money, because I am afraid I will lose control or go bankrupt. However, my husband pointed out to me that my mother does the same thing-- never spends money on herself and is still miserable, and I realized that maybe being happy and healthy is more important than having a big fancy house or high bank balance. And so suddenly, the lap band seems doable again. Part of me feels like I just needed to take a step back and take some time to decide to move forward, but part of me is still saying that it's selfish, that I'm just lazy and gluttonous and I shouldn't need surgery to lose weight... but those voices are getting quieter. I guess, after all this rambling, what I really want to know is if anyone else experienced these roller coasters of emotion while going through the process. And if so, how did it work out for you? Any advice or guidance or sharing is very welcome.

    Sugar free candies

I eat them as well. I know it's way better then regular candies, but yes, be careful with the sugar alcohols.

    Sugar free candies

I eat them. I have to be careful with sugar alcohol though.

Living with addiction is hard, I kept trying to fix things only to realize I could only control myself. I hated who I had become, I let myself become consumed with his alcoholism and lost myself completely. This was the beginning of my weight gain, the more out control his drinking became the bigger I got. Use this time apart to get clarity, who are you, who is he, do you value the same things, you'll rediscover yourself. When you are clear about yourself you won't get sucked into his drama, its his not yours, your yelling and name calling keeps you stuck in his game. Who knows what time apart will give him, just know your boundaries and limits so that if you do reconcile the rules are clear. I divorced and my ex died from his alcoholism.

Questions for those One Year post-op.

I will be 3 years out in May... Can you eat a whole apple? Probably. I usually eat about 3/4 of an apple and I am comfortable. If I tried to eat it first thing in the morning I could probably only eat a couple of slices because my sleeve is tight in the mornings. Can you eat rice and Pasta without discomfort? Just a little. A few bites of rice or pasta is all I can eat, it still fills me up really quickly. I try to eat Protein first most of the time and then I don't have a lot of room for rice and pasta. Do you ever have the occasional glass of wine with dinner? No, but that's because I don't ever drink alcohol. I didn't drink before my sleeve either so it's not a sleeve thing. How have your close relationships been effected by your weight loss? Only positively for me, thankfully. I have wonderful family and friends and they have all been supportive of me in this journey. Are you able to quickly drink a glass of Water on a hot day or after a workout? Not as quickly as I could before surgery but much quicker than I could right after surgery. I drink a lot of water every day, at least 128 ounces so I'm drinking all the time. If you were an emotional eater, what behavior have you replaced the emotional eating with? Probably exercise and shopping. My emotional eating still rears it's ugly head sometimes. I think it's something I will have to deal with for life. For the most part I can keep it at bay and I have worked hard to learn to do other things instead of eating to deal with my emotions, but I am not perfect. Do you have any sadness associated with the inablilty to eat a large portion of something incredibly delicious? Not anymore. I did at first. I can eat just about anything now and I am used to eating small portions so it's not something that I really think about anymore. The key is to learn how to eat and control your eating/emotions in the first year. After a year or two (for some, much sooner) usually your ability to eat all the slider foods comes back and you can actually fit quite a bit of sliders in your sleeve. Learning to eat protein first, then veggies and small amounts of carbs is key. Eat clean and healthy and change your lifestyle.

    Alcohol?

It depends entirely upon the philosophy of your surgeon. Mine recommends not drinking alcohol after surgery. Its empty calories, if nothing else. Fortunately, I don't drink, so I'm not missing anything.

    Cold mess

Tell me about it! I am 3 weeks post op and caught a horrible cold!!!! I was cleared for NyQuil sugar free and alcohol free. Also I was ok to take rubitussen Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  10. I rarely drink alcohol, but I wouldn't want to sign a document agreeing never to have alcohol again. One reason I've hardly ever had any alcohol is because of the empty claroies and so that hasn't changed with the band. I don't have more than one drink when I do drink and so I will just try a small amount at those specail occasions now that I am banded. I just think your doctor went too far with that request. It seems as if these doctors sometimes go too far into our personal lives, especially because they often aren't our primary care physicians.I was troubled by my lap band surgeon demanding that I get a pap smear and a mammogram on top of everything else he requested because my primary care physician and I already have that covered and I didn't think it was any of his business or had anything to do with the banding surgery. They know that they can ask us to do almost anything because we really want the surgery and so these types of abuse of power happen. Enough is enough.

    Carb cycling and alcohol

Do you really need 3 glasses. How about having one glass and nursing it all night. That way you will have a drink in front of you and you wont be tipsy enough to eat too much. I find 1 glass of wine is way too much for me now that I have my band. Since I am not eating as much as I used to the alcohol affects me faster.
  12. Last night I had Alcohol for the first time since my surgery...Lawd Have mercy I was DRUNK not tipsy after 2 long Island Ice Teas....Can anybody explain to me why now after the surgery it does not take as many drinks for me to get hammered?
  13. I love your post. I try to ignore the posts where people are "bitchy" to each other or complaining because some "newbie" didn't look for an old "thread" before posting a question. BTY, some of the old threads are six+ pages of responses and sometimes very difficult to find answers. I love your philosophy. I am currently reading the AA book (my son is an alcoholic and doesn't want to change), so I know what you mean about constantly reminding yourself of where you were in order to become and remain the person you want to be. Thank you for the reminder!

  16. Hi sleevers , I had my blood tests checked post operatively as is the norm .I received a phone call from my G.P. to tell me the liver ones had come back looking not within normal levels .He said he was writing to my Surgeon to ask what my pre-surgery levels were in comparison to the ones just done BUT if they were the same , I should never have had the operation . He told me to take it easy , try not to worry and I have them retested tomorrow . Meantime the Surgeon hasn't replied to his request for the pre-op blood tests ,and I am a bit concerned .When I asked the surgeon what my liver looked like after the surgery (I knew I had a non alcoholic fatty liver ,it was discovered years ago and put down to all the meat I ate on the Atkins diet .I don't drink ) but the Surgeon said my liver was thin .No mention of rippling fat on it .I haven't got yellow skin or eyes , but on the dipstick wee test my leukocytes are off the chart , no bilirubin , but occasionally blood .I have a rash on both sides of my body , below my breasts and round to the side (not boob rash ). Anyone got any thoughts ? or experiences ? many thanks X

how to avoid band slips & erosion

I completely agree with the analogy of the alcoholic resuming drinking "socially" and the band being removed. Face it folks, we are foodaholics for life. Removing the band will, eventually, increase hunger and there is a significant chance a bandster without a band will, over time, resume the old lifestyle and gain weight...a lot of weight. Just like the alcoholic or an ex-cigarette smoker, we're addicted forever. JB

When Is It Ok To Have Alcohol!?!

Clear burning alcohol like vodka and tequila are the best for our new tummies. Other alcohol has too much sugar in it. Although I still will try wine. But it's a good thing I like vodka and tequila just no pop for mixes

    surgery the 23rd

First of all, congratulations on getting the band. This is a life saving and changing part of your life. I too, would have turned into my mother with heart problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and everything else that my mom had later in life. I chose the band to get the weight off safely and slowly. I am almost 3 years out at goal and never had one single fill. I do have days I can eat chicken and then again can't eat chicken, depending on my band. It is very fickle, I never know for sure what I can eat and not eat. I do get stuck but it is my fault from eating too big of a piece or not chewing enough and eating too fast. I still occasionally go back to my old ways of eating like the house is on fire, but I keep it in mind, especially when I get stuck and it is a constant reminder to me. You will do fine, I lost 90 pds and am in size 10 from my size 22's, I am on NO medication and feel like a youngster again, I am 58 years old. Good luck and keep in mind that slow is better, it is going to take time to train yourself for eating properly. I still battle head hunger every now and then but I do believe this is a lot like alcoholism, it never goes away, it is always there and you need to keep it in check one day at a time. You have to eat every day and that is what makes it so hard. Have a wonderful day of your new life with the band.
  20. My poop suddenly turned black after I began drinking wine again. I had blood work done and discovered that my liver rates were elevated. I stopped drinking wine and other mixed drinks, and within 30 days, my liver levels had returned to normal. Apparently, my post-WLS system does not tolerate and process alcohol well.

Shakes & Meals anyone ever Cheated??

It was hard, I wanted to quit, I had to condition my mind mentally, so I started the adding the shakes little by little in the months before surgery because I knew I was going to have to get used to them. I gagged and was in great resentment but I didn't want my surgeon to cancel my surgery so I wasn't going to risk that. I started the pre-op around Feb 3rd. I went out of town to a convention around Feb 10th. I forgot to pack my powder mixture so during the days of my convention, I found restaurant where I could order baked fish and lots of salads There was one restaurant that I always go to every year when I attend the convention. Do you think I went? Heck yes, and I ate therir delicious chili con queso with chips. I also ate half a sandwich one of those days. On Feb 14th, I ate at Saltgrass with my family. I resisted alcohol but I just had to have me a pitch of that bread (It was the last time I ate bread now that I think about it). I also ate crackers and rice cakes during the pre-op because I didn't know I wasn't supposed to. I don't really consider it cheating, but I did rely on this website and the people on here to keep me focused. The first week of the pre-op I was cranky and everything, but when I saw 8 pounds gone in like four days, it motivated me. Hang in there!!!!

    Alcohol consumption.. Beware!

Okay - if you want to drink most surgeons recommend avoiding until you hit goal or minimum of 3 months. Saying this - "Drinking alcohol after a bariatric procedure is not recommended because alcohol will take longer to metabolize in the patient's body; therefore serum levels of alcohol will rise more quickly and will be maintained longer in a bariatric patient. I still warn them that they stand the risk of getting drunk with small amounts of alcohol and may take longer to become sober". Personally, I was a light weight before and am a super light weight now. One drink and I don't drive, at all. Not passing any judgement. As Erica said, be careful if you choose to drink. PS - Erica you look amazing!
  23. Just needed to share my scary experience from this weekend.. I had a "girls night out" on Sat. Had 4 cocktails in a period of 4-5 hrs. Next day, I felt HORRIBLE. Bad hangover that wouldn't go away. Couldn't drink Water, couldn't eat. Ended up going to ER Sun night and got 2 liters of saline IV. They did a full metabolic panel and it turned out normal, but still scary. Feeling much better today (mon), but it's a huge lesson that my body cannot take that amount of alcohol. Up until this weekend, I'd only had up to 2 alcoholic beverages at a time. It was scary to feel that ill after "only" 4 drinks. (ok, still a lot... But in the old days I would have been fine) Anyone else experienced this?

    Is this dumping?

I am trying to find a shake or shake mix that works and does not cause gas, bloating, or diarrhea. Even finding Vitamins that do not cause problems is quite a challenge. I have to watch for milk Protein but unfortunately I am not sure which form it is that makes me so sick. I cannot eat or drink things that are processed milk products like soft serve ice cream, flavored or preserved coffee c reamers. but I can manage a glass or two of non fat or 1% without having problems. oSo it is important that I get this figured out now. I also can not tolerate any form of sugar alcohol which is the first ingredient in many "sugar free' items. My nutritionist does not want me to rely on soy protein and has suggested I try unjury unflavored and see if it works for me.
  25. It's really hard to say what somebody else's father feels or is going to do. Sometimes relatives, even fathers, have issues, and in families where alcoholism or addiction is present, family members try to tiptoe around it, thinking it is their own fault. It is important to be able to live our own lives, but we shouldn't forget how hard or painful it can be to separate yourself from someone you love, especially a parent. There are costs to following one's path, but in the end, the cost is worth it.
