My doctor's told us that drinking alcohol is a no no. They reported that our stomachs are greatly reduced and is absorbed at a much faster rate and that people have died with WLS from drinking alcohol. Now was this a scare tactic or what? I don't want to risk it. But on the other hand, I might take a sip here and there. Why not?

Drinking alcohol post-op, your experiences?
jess9395 replied to PlzCoolerMe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Personal experience, no preaching. I am almost 9 months out. I honestly haven't tried carbonation. I drank WAY too much diet soda to open that door again at this point. I do hope to maybe try a beer again one day, or a hard cider...but since drinking while eating makes me completely ill I probably won't try that for a LONG time. I think it's luck of the draw who can and who can't. Carbonation makes a lot of people ill. I have has wine (once--about 1/4 glass), margaritas (twice, again about 1/4 glass) and an after dinner liqueur (once--amaretto--about half of a shot glass). All four times the alcohol hit me VERY fast and hard. Which is why I have only done it twice! -
Drinking alcohol post-op, your experiences?

I am a "chick" but I could out drink most guys I've ever met before surgery. It's almost like I'm immune to the effects of alcohol. Sure, I could get puking, stumbling, falling down drunk in college and in my 20's, but as I got older it's like I couldn't get "drunk" anymore. 12+ beers and numerous shots of whiskey and other mixed cocktails in a single day camping or boating would leave me a little buzzed but mostly sleepy. I had 2-3 very strong whiskey or vodka cocktails everyday after work just to "relax". (This was after my brother died and a food and alcohol daze is the way I chose to cope) I would definitely call myself a productive alcoholic. I was actually looking forward to alcohol affecting me more strongly after surgery, like so many people have reported. After 4 months out I had a glass of wine.....nothing. Then I had 2 glasses....nothing. Then one weekend at a golf tournament I had 3 vodka cranberries....got a little buzz, but nothing special. Had a Bloody Mary at a Kentucky Derby party but could only finish 1/2 because I got so full. As for carbonation, I've tried beer, sprite, and hard cider. They were all a no go. The bubbles burned and hurt. I've managed to take a sip or two if some new local brews, but a whole bottle would be out of the question. And to tell you the truth, I really haven't been that interested in drinking postop. I've been to several parties and out with friends and I am easily the only non-drinker in the crowd. The examples I listed above were more of "I wonder if I can" kind of experiments, but my craving for alcohol is totally gone. No one is more surprised about that than me! So I guess you will just have to wait and find out your yourself how you feel about drinking and whether or not you can tolerate carbonation. -
alcoholic beverages
sld21 replied to Time2BHealthy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Redbull is carbonated as well. I personally have issues with carbonation, occasionally and I mean very occasionally can I handle a sip. It puts an extreme amount of pressure in my stomach and makes me honestly feel stuck. I loved a Red Stripe or Bud Ice before the band. It has been a year and a half now and I have yet to finish one whole beer. I am not a wine drinker unless they are sweeter and although carbonated, they are bit less than beers. I also let mine sit for a while, it bothers me less--warm. I will also drink, gin or vodka mixed with cranberry or OJ or whiskey/amaretto/ midori sours. Ever since banding, alcohol is harder for me to consume for some reason..good thing I am not missing out. Before I could handle at least a few with friends......I have not been drunk or barely tipsy since banding, so one drink can make me fuzzy or not. -
I am 12 days po and I need a drink. My husband is annoying and although I am not really a drinker... the low sugar skinny margarita in the cabinet is looking very tempting. How long did u wait to have a drink?

Post Op 9 Days - Question About Liquids
Rachel412 replied to lea3277's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Having alcohol right now is a bad idea since your body is still weak from surgery. It will affect you quickly, and maybe not in a good way. MOST people don't have restriction right after surgery. The band works by making you feel "full" quickly and keeping you feeling satisfied for 4-5 hours, but it's not going to stop you from eating or drinking a large amount of anything. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should -
Hello, Is it true banders can NEVER drink alcohol? I asked the nutritionist in my medical group, she said at least 2 years. I don't drink much to begin with, but on specail occasions I can do some damage to a good bottle of wine. Is 2 years realistic? Has anyone had alcohol while banded? If so, did you feel okay?

Studies show the rate of alcoholism is 10% and growing for people after WLS. Why risk another addiction/problem? Struggling with weight is hard enough why add another thing?

Can't tolerate somethings
Cervidae replied to tinabrown2005@gmail.com's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's not uncommon for people to become lactose intolerant after surgery but then for it to go away in a few months, or even as long as six months later. Your sweetener packet may have sugar alcohol which makes my tummy cramp up too. I second the fair life suggestion! -
Feeling pretty good.

I finally had to take the steri strips off. They were blistering my skin. My incisions look good. Just swipe them with alcohol on cotton ball couple times a day. -

Cocktails After Vsg?
Izuri replied to MJ's comingN2form's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
We were sleeved the same day. I haven't tried any alcohol yet, but I know my dietitian warned us that we will be cheap drunks from now on =) So if you do drink - just make sure you do it safely and maybe try a little at home so you know how it hits you first! -
Depressed 2 months post op
Anakin Jay replied to livinglifelikeitsgolden's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
The alcohol is probably your problem. Whenever you drink alcohol your body will burn that for energy first before anything else... it's like pure energy. No matter what diet I've ever been on, alcohol always causes a stall. -
Depressed 2 months post op
livinglifelikeitsgolden posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had my surgery on May 16th 2011. I was so excited due to my rapid lost which was like 27 lbs in just a couple weeks. Once i began eating normal foods I watched the scale come to a complete stop. I have been on a stall since my 3rd week. Sometimes i would notice i lost 5lbs but that would slowly creep right back up. I feel so helpless and depressed. I used to come to this site to be encourage but now I feel so alone because everyone is losing the weight and yet I am lagging far behind. Due to this I have notice that I have started drinking alcohol which i think isn't good due to the calories. But I feel like I have really given up or having a very nonchalant attitude about losing weight. I get full quicker but still not losing weight. I just don't understand. I have changed my diet and am eating alot healthier and still on a stall!!! AHHHHHH, i feel like screaming and hiding. Someone help me plzzzzzz........ -
My Story - Failure in Gastric Bypass 2012
Inner Surfer Girl replied to LittleDogLover's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am so sorry for your loss and for your struggles and challenges. As you are being treated for alcoholism then you know the first step is accepting that you need help. I am glad you recognize that. I agree that you should make an appointment with a surgeon, a NUT, and even a psychologist first thing to talk about your stays and goals. If you haven't had blood work in a while they will definitely need to check your Vitamin levels etcetera. See if the bariatric program has a support group. If so, attend. You may also want to find a 12-step group like OA (OA.org). A good therapist will be critical for helping you recover and move forward in a positive way. It is never too late to be successful and create a life that you deserve. Sending hugs. -

I really feel for you. Things don't always go the way we expected. It's great that you have recognised your battle with alcohol. Not everyone has such in site. Sobriety will give you back so much more, than a normal liver function test. It will give you piece of mind, self belief and improve your health and self esteem. This is a difficult game that we play but it is worth it. First things first, believe you deserve the best and take one day at a time.. The rest will follow. You are worth it. -
Revision from mini to roux-en-y
MarinaGirl replied to Lashes1984's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hard to say. But if you’re eating well (no sugar, processed food, simple carbs, liquid calories, or alcohol) and not overeating, you should be able to lose more weight if that is your goal. Good luck! -
Question about Sugar.....
vlp1968 replied to Megg40's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good question. I don't know exactly what suger alcohols are (I know they act as a sweetner). However, on atkins I learned it doesn't raise your blood suger level like regular sugar does. Low carb is all about keeping your blood sugar nice and steady. I eat sugar free jello- only 10 calories. -
Itchy incisions?
Thomas CPA replied to bethk12@gmail.com's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try some lotion, sometimes a little alcohol swab helps, else just try not to bother it, my staples came out two weeks post and itched like crazy for a another week but once those scabs fell off I went to town scratching - felt good. -
No coffee?! No booze?
SKCUNNINGHAM replied to Brittanysiemens's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am not a coffee drinker, so I have no advice there. I did enjoy alcohol pre-sleeve - usually tequila sipped like cognac or irish whiskey the same way. Occasionally I would drink a mixed drink, glass of wine and rarely a beer. I have tried alcohol twice since the sleeve to see what happened / how I tolerated it. I really have no interest in drinking until I hit goal, because alcohol is worse than carbs from a calorie standpoint and turns to pure sugar once you drink it. It is 7 calories per gram (Protein and carb are 4). The first time I tried tequila, 2 mouthfuls and I had a buzz. These were after I had eaten food, and spaced a little apart. I had the same reaction after drinking about 2-4 oz. of beer. If I am that sensitive to alcohol's effects with food in my stomach, I cringe to think what it would be on an empty stomach. So to me - booze is out until I am maintaining after hitting goal. When I have had to be in a social setting where people were drinking alcohol, I drink a glass of bloody mary mix with a lime wedge. No carbonation like sparkling Water would have. Or, you could tell your friends you are watching your weight, and are skipping the added calories of alcohol while you are in the losing phase. Good luck. -
Alcohol After Lapand

My doc says that an occasional glass of wine or mixed drink is fine but no beer/carbonated beverages. The only thing about alcohol is that there are extra calories... -
I need motivation,help,advice
chycky replied to kemstah's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I can't imagine the feeling of starting surgery and not having it go through. I am so sorry. I had such fears of my liver causing an issue. Just keep thinking of the goal, look at the success stories and photos here. That is what kept me going when I was suffering the liquid phase, not to mention the longer caffeine and alcohol free time. I actually stopped drinking all alcohol and taking almost all OTC drugs months before my diet restrictions because I wanted to do all that I could to avoid issues. Not sure if it made difference or surgery would have happened regardless. But, I do know that my liver numbers got better in those few months. Good luck! -
My doc said not for one year! However, I had alcohol, about 3 months out. I have a cocktail every once in a while now, maybe two twice a month. I was never a big alcohol drinker...well, I worked at a winery for 12 years and I definitely consumed my share and more over those years which was 15 or more years ago. Beer, absolutely fills me up with just a half of beer now. I might have one or two glasses of wine and/or cocktails on a weekend night (but I don't do ones with sweet fillers), just a martini or fresh margarita and I'm feel super happy! I say use your own judgement. You might be able to have a cocktail or two or...your sleeve just might not tolerate it. Keep in mind...alcohol is still high calories, high sugar, and for me at least it seems to hit me much stronger than before being sleeved. One Love.

Alcohol is on my surgeon's list of things to avoid because it's empty calories. I think I had a little wine at about 3 months out and I've had a glass of wine here and there since then. Maybe 5 times since surgery? The odd thing is I feel slightly hung over the next day. Every time I've experienced this mild "hung over" feeling. I'm not much of a drinker so it's not a big deal to me to skip it but if someone's going to pour me a good glass of wine I'll probably take it! Six weeks out seems early to me though, but I'm not a Dr!
