  1. I'm 17 months out, and it just depends on what it is. If it's a light white fish, I can eat about 5-6 oz with a few bites of veggies. If it's beef, which is a little denser, only 4-5 oz with a couple bites of veggies. Same with chicken. I can eat 3/4 cup of Soup, cottage cheese, oatmeal, yogurt and the like.

    What are you guys eating?

I'm just under 4 months out and I too feel I'm eating too many carbs and not enough Protein. eggs don't sit well and I don't eat fish or yogurt (blahhh...have tried and tried) So I have resolved to make one big pot of soup per week, this has been helpful since I can eat meat if its wet enough. plus boiling soup bones (beef, ham, chicken, turkey) is full of collegian protein I'm a work in progress.

    Questions

Are you reaching your protein target? I like Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, tuna, turkey, cheese sticks, avocado, etc.
  4. Hi all Sorry it's been so long since I last posted. I have been doing well, too well in fact haha. I've lost over 200 lbs and my Dr wants me to stop losing and drink high calorie shakes. So to go back, 3 week after surgery i had that contained leak and was doing better after that, then I got cdiff which was caused by all the antibiotics they gave me in the hospital. That was a pain, alot of diarrhea so they gave me more antibiotics lol and I also took prebiotic and ate yogurt and took t ok me to get back to normal. I should say during this whole time I had no appetite at all and had to force myself to eat. The loss of appetite is caused by the cdiff. So in the beginning of September I was getting my appetite back but slowly and this is why I think I lost so much weight so fast. Also during this time my gout kicked in big time and my Dr said I could take naproxen but limited and I also take allopurinol. Well I only had taken 3 naproxen over three weeks then they changed it to celebrex. So in November I was wanting to eat more, I couldnt. I could only eat soft foods or Soup. Mr Dr ordered and upper endoscopy and found the stoma had closed half way due to the nsaids. So they were able to open it back up at the same time and boy does it feel good to be able to eat better. The Dr thinks it might be closing again and to stop the celebrex. The reason why I was still on it was the Dr said that even though it's an nsaid it delivers it in a different way than normal nsaid are in the body. But it should be an easy fix again. Anyway haha that's how I've been, not a bad time. So any good suggestions on high calorie Protein Shakes? Any questions please ask. Haha hope you all are doing well too.

For me, what has worked long term is to have a protein bar or protein drink daily to up my protein. I eat a lot of chicken thighs... Cooked in liquid to keep moist. Also chicken salad works for me Usually with a small salad or vege on the side. Some people like quinoa, beans with rice, edamamesJerky, nuts or yogurt. Extra protein milk helps too...all really fairly high in protein. Also eggs and cottage cheese can be good options It seems like you have to experiment to find what works to keep your protein high. Water is what I have to work on daily. I attempt to not sit without a tall container... I'm mostly successful, but I need to remind myself a lot! Best of luck. It is kinda trial and error with what food agrees with you.

    VERY Rumble-y Gut

I found that when I cut out dairy products my rumbly gut went away. I now eat greek yogurt and occasionally cheese and they bring it back, but if I stick to just Fairlife milk, I have no rumbly gut problems. Perhaps that will help you too. pam
  8. So I am eating my first mush food today. I had refried Beans (black beans), low fat shredded cheese and a little guacamole. My stomach feels like it is constricting when the food hits it? Is this normal. I am not feeling nauseous or anything (maybe a little gassy) so I stopped and took a few bites of my cottage cheese. Same thing. I also had a hernia fixed when I got the sleeve. I did get a Greek yogurt down this morning and a few bites of scrambled egg (it ended up being too dry for me) Anyone else have the constricting pain when first eating?

    Support needed

Marcci, I understand how you're feeling. I love chocolate and can't think of putting it in my mouth right now. Smells are all over the place for me as well. I had breathing issues before I left the hospital but everything is fine now (surgery was 1/6). I still can only drink vanilla and eat Greek yogurt. I don't know if you can find this - Chloe's Bars - has 60 cals, fine sugar and non-dairy, gluten free tastes great. Soup is not working for me as too salty - even the low sodium hope you feel better soon and hug yourself! We all need hugs

    December Sleevers

I was also sleeved 12/08/15. I am down 25-26, depending on time of day I am weighed, lol. I also feel like I should have lost more by now. Don't get me wrong, I am ecstatic that I've lost what I have, I never could have done it without the sleeve. Something in my brain is telling me that I am failing, even though my surgeon told me at my one month follow up that he is happy with my progress and I'm "right on track" with what he expected. I am eating well and getting in my fluids, but am having some food issues. I am fine through breakfast and lunch, but at dinner I seem to be able to eat more. I am following plan almost exactly as it is outlined in binder(I use pretty much all of the sample days menus) and feel like it's just too much. I feel guilty about eating the portion I do, even though it is actually a little less than the plan. I hope the weight loss continues as I think I'm going to try to up my fluid intake between meals(nothing 30 before, during, or 30 after meals). I always eat protein first and limit carbs to mainly dairy(cottage cheese, milk, Greek yogurt, etc.). I do need some carbs as I am a type-1 diabetic on an insulin pump, which also doesn't help the weight come off easily("insulin holds the fat", as my endocrinologist says). Here's to breaking through the stall and getting the weight coming off again/faster.
  12. You definitely sound dehydrated and undernourished. Have you tried Syntrax nectar Protein? They are like koolaid so they may not fill you up as much as the milk-based shakes do. They come in variety of flavors. 2 scoops in 32 oz Water would give you 40g protein you could sip on all day. Add in a couple cups of decaf herbal tea (warm liquids went down better for me), another couple cups of water and you've got your fluids in. Try adding unflavored Protein powder to some Soups. They may not fill you up like dense Proteins do, so you can get more in. Plain Greek yogurt flavored with vanilla protein powder would give you a big protein boost, too. I had to sip all day long from the moment I Woke up till the minute I went to bed. I never didn't have a water bottle in my hand and I rarely ate/drank anything that didn't contain protein. And I did not go to bed until I got my 64 oz and 60+g. You have to make these a priority. They are WAY more important than excercise at this point.
  13. Either you are getting terrible medical advice that varies from just about every other Bariatric surgeon on the planet or you are seriously misunderstanding it. You can't thrive if you're not getting enough Water. Of course you're exhausted and can't work out. Your body is fighting for survival. You need minimum 64 oz every day. You're getting a third of your MINIMUM. You also need Protein if you hope not to starve. Without enough protein your body will begin feeding on itself, including the muscle you need to have the energy to do things like breathe and be awake. You need to be much more concerned about water and protein, unless there is a legitimate medical reason your doctor doesn't want you taking protein, which I can't really imagine. It's hard to imagine a Bariatric surgeon approving a candidate for surgery that can't have protein. Try protein shots, protein puddings, adding protein to yogurt, applesauce, whatever. I have been drinking Isopure low carb protein water. A 20 oz bottle has 40 grams of protein. That's half of your protein requirement and a third of your liquid requirement in one bottle. And it tastes like kook aid. And I haven't even had surgery yet. Seriously you need to take proper care of yourself. Nobody else is going to do it for you.

    Protein Failure

I second what Inner Surfer Girl suggested. Also of the things you can eat, like the cottage cheese and yogurt, have you tried mixing in a little of the unflavored Protein powders into those things? I know for me early on I was struggling with getting protein in and the flavored powder mixes were just too sweet tasting to me. I went with ISO pure unflavored and was mixing it into my tomato/crème of chicken Soups. It didn't alter the flavoring that much and I was able to gain a few more grams of protein in a day. As for seeking out a nutritionist, if your surgeon's office doesn't have one on staff, what about your primary care doctor's office?

    Protein Failure

I definitely think you should talk to your surgeon's office if you don't have a NUT. You have got to get in your Protein. Based on what you described I would suggest that you eat frequent small meals and Snacks throughout the day. If you can only eat 1/3 of cottage cheese or yogurt at a time then you may need to eat more often.

    Protein Failure

i can't do powders but i can do the premier Protein. and it's only 11oz so it's not too hard to drink. there are some yogurts that have 13g or protein (chobani). also pumpkin seeds and such have lots of protein. bison/buffalo has a lot as well.

    Protein Failure

Hi all! I'm 2.5 months out from being sleeved (SW- 265)... I'm just not getting my Protein in. I've tried multiple (and if anyone wants the lbs and lbs of powder with 1 scoop used, I'll happily send it to get it out of my kitchen) MULTIPLE protein powders. Both plain and flavored. I can't find any that I don't gag after 2 sips. I'm not sure if it's a texture thing or what... Anyhow, I maybe get 20-30g of protein a day... And yes, I know that's way too low. I'm at my wits end on what to do. I eat as often as I can. However, I can't even consume 1/3rd of a chicken breast before reaching the puke point. I've tried softer things (cottage cheese, tuna, yogurt, etc...) but it's still at about the 1/3 cup point that I start to get that full feeling. I'm looking for ANY suggstions. No, I haven't talked to my NOT because I don't have one. My insurance doesn't cover it and my surgeon's office doesn't have one. Any suggestions for protein boost?? Thanks!

    OCTOBER 2014

one of the best things I have been doing for myself is staying in touch with what happens in this group! I used to not press the "notify me" button, but now when somebody posts I o ow it!! when I have time, I read it. Just this simple task helps me stay in the game. It is such a simple thing. Now that I'm a normal-weight person, where there is not even a hint of diabetes, I tend to want to forget. So that's it for today. I e been to the pool for 90 minutes and had my fave yogurt breakfast with an orange and bluebies. Also cinnamon and nutmeg. I just don't know about lunch. keep your courage.
  19. Great suggestions, Jess! I love overnight oats before a run also (oats, Greek yogurt, peanut or other nut butter and fair life milk)

    What are you guys eating?

My typical day is eggs or a protein drink for breakfast. Chicken or turkey and cheese for lunch. Chicken, fish or steak for dinner with a little salad or couple bites of veggies. Some of my favorite snacks are yogurt, apple with PB, cheese sticks, pepperoni chips, quest bar and nuts.

    ????Is diarrhea only "dumping"?

Plain nonfat Greek yogurt is a good substitute for mayo, sour cream etc you can season it up. Mayo doesn't make me feel great and the yogurt is high in protein!

    What’s Your Attitude Towards Carbs?

As I am very early in my journey, I find if I follow my surgeons rules with protein first, I don't have room for carbs. I do eat cottage cheese, all kinds of cheese, apple slices with peanut butter, and yogurt which all have carbs. I just make my main focus protein and less than 50 carbs per day. I stay away from white carbs because they bring on sugar cravings ( I found this out when I enjoyed my planned Christmas treats)

    3 month post op

lean protein like chicken, turkey, tuna. yogurt and cottage cheese, mozzarella and mild cheddar cheeses. bananas and other soft fruit when I could fit it in. Refried beans and eggs were a favorite, with a sprinkle of cheese. A cheese stick rolled up in a slice of lunch meat was great too, but it was a little too much for me to eat in one meal. Chili (I prefer to make my own but in a pinch a small chili from wendy's would sooth my stomach for some reason). I think I had started protein bars by then too, though I could only eat half at a time and it took a long while. Hope this helps.
