    Curves?

Congratulations on your commitment to a healthier lifestyle by signing up! Curves is very successful here in the US and I'm sure you'll do great! However, the quoted text really bothers me and it upsets me that a fitness facility would guarantee weight loss by attending 3x or more a week. Losing weight requires that you use more calories than you take in. If you do 3 workouts a week for an average of 400 calories, that's only a total of 1200 calories. And we all know far too well how easy it is to consume 1200 calories... and that would just keep you at maintenance. You know your body better than anyone else so listen to it and go for it! Just don't buy into somebody else's BS because it's what you want to hear... You're going to do awesome because of YOU, not because THEY guarantee it.

    Curves?

Hey everyone, I joined a "gym" today that just opened a few blocks from my apartment. It's called VivaFit and they specialize in 2 things. One is Pilate's and the other is a 30 min program that is done on hydraulic machines. There is a circle of machines and you start the circle and spend 30 seconds on each machine, the entire round should last 30 min. They say that if you do it a min of 3 times a week your guaranteed weight loss. It's geared for women and is a women's only institute. The girl there told me that they have something similar in the US called Curves? Has any one heard of this? Has any one tired it? How were the results?? Any thing any one has to add would be great! Thanks!
  3. Hi Guys, I have my first appointment with Dr. Jack Rutledge in Chattanooga, TN on Thursday. I'm trying to get everything in order and everything together before I go see him so the process will be smooth and fast. Tomorrow is Monday, and I need to call my primary care physician for a "medical necessity referral." Joy. I'm new to Tennessee, only been here a year, so I have only seen this doctor once. He seems very conservative -- in fact, when he told me he wanted to see me lose some weight, he mentioned that his wife worked at the local Weight Watchers. I just don't know if he will do it, and plus I don't have a "five year history" report from any doctor about being overweight. Did anyone else stress out about this as much as I am? Did the referral letter not end up being that big of a deal?? Please say so! Mallorie

    Primary Care Physician Referral

Mallorie, I have to say that it wasn't stressful for me at all. I've had the same PCP since I was 18 and I am now 36. I would complain to him about my weight issues for years, he gave me meridia at one time, it didn't work. About the letter, it was odd to me. I asked the Dr. for a referral to a nutritionist and at that time I asked his thoughts on WLS. He said that the Lapband would be a great choice for me, but he'd support the bypass if I chose too. ANYWAY back to my point. I went to the weightloss Dr. that he referred me too and that was pretty much it for me. I never heard about a letter of referal or anything else. This hospital did it all for me. SO as you asked.. was it that much of a big deal?In my case, it wasn't. My nutritionist, surgeon, Psych. eval and exam were all located in the same area of the hospital. They all worked together and got me approved, in a short period of time. Obviously, I had to have the insurance requirements met. I also wrote a letter explaining why I'd be a good candidate for surgery. My struggles of weight loss and gain, diets, pills, books, exercising history and all I could think of. What I did was made a timeline from my adolescent yrs. until now. It consisted of what I weighed, how active I was, any weight gain or loss within the time frame and so on. I gave every person involved in my WLS a copy. When I turned the timeline in to my nutritionist, she stated that this is awesome to send along with the papers to the ins. comp.. That way, they can read what your thoughts and struggles were/are. Sometimes when they can read what you have been through and hear a voice through your letter, they soften up.. more likely if their decision is on the fence. (so I was told). Anyhow, don't sweat the PCP. That, to me, was the easiest step of the whole process. Best of luck

    Primary Care Physician Referral

I had to get a referral from my doctor and since I hadn't had a physical in over ten years, I'd never met her before. I put together a book with photos showing my weight change over the years, all of the different diets I've tried, all of the many many many diet books and workout videos I own, all of the pills I've tried, all of the diet food in my pantry and freezer, and the mountain of weight watchers materials I have from the four different times I joined - including the time I made lifetime. I also had an essay about how my weight has affected my life, what I expected to get out of the surgery, what research I'd done, etc. (The essay was required by a different program that I wound up not going with.) Basically, it showed that I've been there, done that, and that I'd really put a lot of thought into this. Maybe it was overkill, but in the face of all the evidence, I knew there was no way she was going to try to put me on a diet. She was very impressed by everything, but I think she would've referred me without it.
  6. So, I noticed that when I first had my surgery and my first fill I was extremely tight. However, as time went on I began to be able to eat more and more. I had my first fill on Feb. 4th and I could hardly keep liquid down, let alone food. Now I can eat a lot more again. I can almost eat as much as I want. So, I am going to go have another fill. My question is what happens when you can't get anymore fills and you can eat as much as you want? And another question is why as time goes by am I able to get more and more food down? I know that I need to learn how to eat less on my own, but now I'm worried that if I can't figure out how to eat less by the time my band gets filled all the way, I'll never be able to lose weight.

1000 pound man on Dr. Phil

Mary -- You might want to have some other things checked like your thyroid and stuff. But this can be very slow. I have lost two pounds in the last 4 months. I'm not perfect and don't exercise except for taking care of mother, but I barely eat anything and I still don't lost weight. So it's different for everyone. Keep your chin up.

    4.5 Months Banded!!

Feeling wonderful!! Down 43lbs and Wearing size 12 Jeans!!! Finally noticing the weight loss. People are noticing.. and it makes me feel good. It's been 8 months since I stopped smoking, My cholesterol has dropped from 257 to 191!! It's now considered NORMAL! I even had a halter monitor on for 24hrs, and the results have improved since prior to surgery! This has all been worth it!! I do have some pain once in a while where the band is located. I think it's more of a spasms then anything. I also have learned that I need to eat slow.. otherwise my food will get stuck, and it's not a pretty site. One thing I would like to let you all know, I still do not get a full feeling. Never had! I've told my Doctor, and they keep filling me.. .and the easier food gets stuck. I think everyone is different. You have people that take a couple of bits and are full... then u got people like me that can eat 2 cups of food, and are fine.... I think it's depends on the person. You need to be aware of what you are putting in your mouth, and know when to back off the table. But I have to say, I don't think 43 lbs in 4.5 mo is too bad! I've learned to eat better, and make wiser choices of foods and I walk 2.5 miles a day!!!! Thats it for now... God bless!:tt2:
  9. HI, Today is my 7th week post surgery. I've lost 24 pounds but the last two weeks...nothing. I have my third post-op appointment next Thursday. My Dr. said he wanted me to loose 10 pounds by that appointment and I've only lost 3. I'm feeling a lot of pressure to "make weight" by next Thursday and it's really making me angry. I've spent my life being a slave to the scale and now that I've had the surgery, I just want to be good to my body and have a healthy attitude toward my weight loss and new eating habits. Thank you to anyone who reads this and has any wisdom or encouragement to share. I've never before participated in a site like this but I feel isolated because my schedule doesn't allow for me to join any support groups. Thanks again to all of you "out there"
  10. I had my gastric sleeve over a year and half ago. It has been wonderful. My mom has finally decided to have the surgery too!! We were so excited. Then she calls her primary insurance that she has through her employer and they do not cover weight loss surgery. She has Medicare as a secondary insurance because of her age, however the bariatric center said Medicare doesn't cover the surgery either. She has called Medicare twice to check for herself, but keeps either getting transferred around to various people or getting put on internal hold. I thought I could reach out to this community to see if anyone has had experience with Medicare paying for this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    Letter about loosing weight

when i wrote my letter I put things in it like all the stuff I can't or won't do because of my weight and things I want to do like ride a roller coaster again and feel comfortable in my own skin, and being in a swimming suit etc. A big thing for me was putting that I wanted to be happy. Just be honest with it because you're the one making the changes and you should be honest with yourself, not just putting things down so the doctors can mark it off the "to do" checklist. ' Hopefully this helps!!! Good Luck with everything!! =D

    Help!

My Sergeon felt I would better benefit from having the sleeve since I was having so much issues with the band. Now it's been almost a year and I only lost 50lbs verses the 120lbs with the band. I have no idea what I am doing wrong and this is disappointing on all levels. Just a quick background: weighted 302 at the time I was banded and lost more than 180lbs in the year I had it. The band kept slipping and my Sergeon felt it would be safer for me if I did the sleeve. I was in the hospital for 6 weeks because I had lost more than 200lbs while banded, I had to gain the weight back. I was 289!when I got the sleeve last year and can't seem to get off 238lbs.

    Subway to the rescue

you must have reached your goal weight; right? I didn't think salad (lettuce, etc.) was an option for quite some time after surgery...when were you able to start eating salads like the one you got from Subway?

    Phentermine and VSG

I took phentermine for my 6 month medically monitored requirement. The first couple months I lost some weight, maybe 15 lbs or so. After that your body gets used to it and I didn't loose much more, maybe a couple lbs a month till the end of my 6 month. But the side effects were awful, made me feel like I was on speed and my heart was always racing. I took it as soon as I woke up and by bed time I was still felt like I was running a mile a minute. I couldn't sleep at all, and I already had issues with sleeping before taking it but it was so much worse. I felt like I was going to stroke out. It caused me to get dangerously high blood pressure. My anxiety was intense. If you can afford optifast I urge you to do that before taking this pills. I simply couldn't afford optifast so my doc recommended the pills. Wasn't a miracle pill. But at the beginning it did stop the hunger feeling.

    The time has come!

I'm on the 26th as well. This two week pre op diet is not easy. My starting weight was 303 and I am excited to get this going. There are some really good videos on YouTube if you have not checked them out yet. There's one guy who has the top 10 reasons to not have vsg surgery. This is a great video if you get time to check it out.

    Do you miss food?

As far as eating I haven't had any problems, I can still enjoy all the foods and flavors as I did before surgery, just not nearly as much. But I will warn you, you will need to re-learn how to eat out, and I have found this part of the process frustrating. So what was your normal dinner out? For me, a glass of wine, then some bread, then a salad, then the main course, sometimes dessert. My first time out a few months after surgery, I had a glass of wine, skipped the bread, ate a small salad, then got about two or three forkfulls of food in my mouth before I began to feel very uncomfortable. That was way too much food and eaten way too quickly, and the sleeve let me know it. I have since learned, I still enjoy a glass of wine, I skip over appetizers and salads and get a small plate of something I want, heavy on the protein, then take my time with it, when the sleeve says, "that's enough", I obey and put the rest in a doggie bag. You will find though, this is a minor inconveinience compared to dealing with weight related issues. Good luck!

    Anyone Have a Pacemaker?

Wow--I can see that you're happy to have your Pacemaker after that experience--how scary!! It was just such a surprise because I don't feel the changes in rhythm. Occasionally I feel that my heart is racing a bit, so I wasn't surprised by that, but I had no idea about the slow times. And I've been unhappy about being on a blood thinner, so I thought maybe the pacemaker would take care of that, but the doc told me yesterday that the pacemaker will not affect when it's too fast--just speed it up when it's too slow. So he can give me stronger meds to slow it down! I'll get used to the idea, just having a hard time with it right now. Since I didn't think I had any health problems other than my weight, I just thought the VSG would have me feeling great and super healthy!

Where have you BEEN all my life?

Problem is..when people see overweight people, they only see the weight, POUNDS, nothing further. They don't assume we as a group have the same thoughts, cares, concerns, needs, and problems they do. What can I say, they're idiots.
  21. Hi everyone, I'm looking for a little feedback or simular experience from anyone who wants to share. Here's my story: For about the last 6 weeks I've been having reflux problems at night. I feel acid in my throat and have a sore throat in the morning. I tried taking Zantac 150mg but it didn't help. Then I tried Prilosec which helped a little bit. I also elevated the head of my bed and stopped eating after 6pm. I also cut out acidic foods. Since none of this seemed to get rid of it completely, I called my fill doctors office. He was on vacation so his nurse told me to go to my primary doctor and ask to have an upper gi/barium swallow done. I just got the results of the upper gi and the impression by the radiologist reads: "old duodenal ulcer or duodenal inflammation.". The primary doctor told me to go back to see the fill doctor (his office is closed until monday) because she didn't know what to do from here. In the mean time she gave me Nexium to take and I'm doing MUCH better since taking it. I don't have any acid in my throat and my sore throat has gone away. I didn't have much faith in the radiologist who did the upper gi because he had never seen a lapband before. He asked me lots of questions about it including "when are you going to have it removed". He didn't understand that I couldn't drink the barium really fast because I had to wait a minute in between swallows for it to go down (it was morning and I try to be extra careful in the morning because I'm a little tighter then in the afternoon) It made me nervous! I have to call the fill doctor on Monday to see if he'll see me. I posted a message on Dr. Kuri's website to see what others thought and I got an immediate email from JoAnn (patient facilitator) telling me to call Dr. Kuri right away! And Sandy,RN told me to get an unfill right away to prevent reflux damage of the esophagus. She thinks I've waited too long already but as soon as I realized the reflux wasn't a temporary thing, I made appointments (it just took a long time to get an appointment with the primary doctor and then I had to wait to have the upper gi done and then another week to get the results) Oh, I hope my band has not eroded or something terrible. I'm doing so well with my weight loss (it's been slow but steady). I hate to think of loosing my band and gaining it all back. :-( Anyone else have a simular experience?

    Cost questions

Hi ! ! I have read a lot of imformation about the lap band it seems like the obesity surgery that will best fit me. My problem is my employer is self insured and does not cover the surgery even after letters from 5 doctors stating that I should have the surgery and why. I'm morbidly obease and have both a thyroid and adult growth hormone problem which keeps me from losing the weight. Does anyone know if there are any agencies that can help me in the funding the cost of the procedure. I just do not have that kind of money laying around at this time. I would appreciate any comments at all.
  23. The post I was trying to make was 2 years out, no weight loss, no restriction or appetite loss. my metabolism is totally destroyed and I can no longer lose weight with diet and exercise depite losing 62 pounds on my own prior to surgery. My medical issues are worse, Gerd, bone pain. Has anyone else experienced this- total surgery fail?

    First consultation this week

Interesting to here what people in the countries have to do for insurance coverage. Yes, in the USA there are many different insurance programs and weight loss programs. I am lucky that mine is covered. The hardest part of my program was the hoops you have to jump prior to qualifying for surgery; mental health screen, sleep study, physical by your primary care, dietitian consultation, support groups and then healthy eating classes. Do you folks have the same requirements? I just joined the forum and have my surgery scheduled for next week.
  25. Yes, I have spoken to my surgeon and he has no answers and doesn't care now that he has been paid. My PCP also has no answers for me. I have had lab testing. I have no restriction. I could eat a whole pizza if I wanted too and I do want to but I don't do it. I am very good on my diet plan as I was prior to surgery. I thought the surgery would ensure that I wouldn't gain the weight back and I would continue to lose weight instead it halted my weight loss in its tracks. I had the sleeve not the band.
