  1. Hi there! I hope some of you could enlighten me. I am potentially having surgery next year, and my bariatric nurse recommended I do the Liver Shrinkage DIet for 2 weeks to add favour to my referral to the surgeons. I am 9 days in and I have only lost 0.6kg (just over 1 pound). Prior to this, I was eating "normally"-carbs, and treats when appropriate as part of a normal lifestyle and I was losing around 2-3pounds a week (just under 1kg). I feel really deflated and feel like I won't hit my weight loss for the surgery referral, and that this diet is just not working. I've read other forums, and people have said they're losing 21 pounds in 2 weeks! I really don't understand why I'm losing LESS than I do on a normal diet. Typical intake: -Breakfast: 2 pieces of fruit or meal replacement shake -Lunch: Soup with a side of poached egg or a piece of fruit. -Dinner: Salad (Lettuce, cucumber, onion and spring onions. Small amount of added vinegar and light salad cream) with some protein of choice eg chicken, ham, beef etc. -Drinks: Water, diet Pepsi (one a day) and 1-2 cups of tea with sweetener and milk. All of these are done to the portion recommendations, and free foods and allowances. Please note I am using Orlistat every day and have been for the past half a year. Hope someone can relieve some imposter syndrome! TIA x

    Considering revision

I’m on the same boat Rachel. I had the sleeve in 2013. Dropped 100 pounds but have gained 65 back. I want to look into a revision. My job has open enrollment and there’s a plan that covers bariatric surgery.

    Overwhelmed

I was just there in August. Sometimes I even doubted if I was doing the right thing. It has been a crazy ride, but I have already lost so much weight, just two months after surgery, and I am fitting into clothes I haven't fit into for years. We are all here for you, that's the purpose of this forum. Your anxiety is valid. Make sure you keep your goals ever present. Remember that there are people here that have gone through similar anxieties, and we are here to support you through it all. A month goes by quicker than you think. One thing I did, (because I got the advice of someone who did this surgery), is I got my chewable multivitamins and my calcium chews. Those are not things you are going to be thinking about after surgery. The other thing that shocked me was how little amounts of food really filled me up after surgery. Be patient with yourself. You will be a new you. You are doing this to be healthier. Keep all that positivity front of mind, and if you need to vent, come to this forum. We are here.
  5. My surgeon's experience is that people usually don't have to jump through the hoops again because the revision is necessary for reasons other than weight loss Sent from my Z6201V using BariatricPal mobile app
  6. I was 63 at time of my bypass surgery 3 years ago last May. I lost 150 pounds in about 18 months. I have regained 30. But have leveled off. I am restarting my liquid diet to restart weight loss. I feel great most days however I still have an occasional dumping. All in all I would have it done again if I knew all of this. Wish I had it done decades earlier though.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I was moved to soft foods this week, and I just put in my grocery order with things like lump crab meat and lean deli meats and cheese to make roll ups- I can’t wait! I had a Turkey meatball and low sugar sauce that I made with a spoon of low fat ricotta and I felt like I was getting closer to normal! does anyone else’s clinic count weight lost from the first day of the liquid diet? I’m not sure if that’s weird or not

    Exercises

your butt shape will change after all the weight loss. Mine was pretty saggy - but I had a lower body lift which tightened it up. Usually lower body exercises like squats and lunges will help with glutes - but again, your shape will change pretty fast, and there's not a lot you can do to help the sagginess with the amount of weight we typically lose. immediately after surgery, all I was cleared for was walking. After four weeks, I was allowed to do everything except for weights. At eight weeks out, I was cleared for weights. The first few months I did mostly water fitness classes - and walking. I also did the stationary bikes at my gym. Now I do dance cardio (like Zumba) and biking, but I was too heavy to do those when I first started on my journey.

    Losing too much weight...

I'm 30 months out. My dietitian got concerned when several months ago I had dropped down to 116 (I'm 5'4) and seemed like I was in an endless free fall since my surgery. But like you, I had some medical issues that seem to have caused the continuous weight drop. Since surgery, I've struggled with extreme nausea and g.i. problems which may have resulted from a damaged vagus nerve. Oddly enough, though, for the past month or so, after a course of antibiotics for a UTI, the constant nausea has stopped (at least for now) and I can eat at regular intervals. I'm now hovering between 119 and 121. Even when I was precipitously losing, my surgeon never suggested reversing the surgery. My dietitian instead focused on increasing my caloric intake, having me eat healthy fats, etc., just like you, and she also had me drink Ensure on days when I couldn't eat at all. You may be going through an adjustment period which will soon stabilize. Be easy on yourself -- you just endured an obstructed bowel and abdominoplasty. And as others have said, no one -- no one -- can force you to undertake an *elective* surgery such as reverse RNY. If you are still unsettled, definitely get a second opinion about your weight situation.

    This surgery is bullshit...

I don’t see how people can expect to be successful early on without tracking protein and water. As most of the folks that have had successful weight loss have noted if you meet the 64 oz fluid guidelines and 60-80 oz of protein daily the tool works. If one was not willing to do that I am not sure why surgery was considered a good option for the OP. The surgery team needs accurate data in order to help you so there has to be some sort of tracking to measure what one is eating. Protocols were developed for a reason. The bullshit is expecting results with little adherence to the recommended protocol.
  11. 5% seems very doable. The liver shrinking diet alone sheds a decent amount of weight.

    Pre op Diet - Help!

Pre-Op diet right now as I am on my liquid diet phase sounded like a dream 😂 Trust me first 3 days are worse during Pre-Op diet phase. But then you get hang on things. I had my surgery postponed twice and I was on my Pre-Op both times (about 7 and 10 days respectively). So I kinda got hang of it and even lost weight doing so. Third time doing it for another 10 days wasn't as difficult but I was someone who had to have something *minor or small* snack to eat. So I would graze 2 or 3 chips or spicy snack almost daily (Don't go overboard ofc and if you're the kind who can't control beyond couple of chips, then don't take this advise). But for me this kept my sanity in the Pre-Op phase. I still lost weight and got the surgery meaning my liver had shrunk. At the same time overall I had lost about 25 pounds within 2 months so they would have made a difference too. Point is 1 or 2 bites of unhealthy snack won't hurt as long as you don't slip through it.
  13. I know it’s been discussed, but just wondering if anyone has advise for sagging arms or loose skin? I’m not even to surgery yet and already have worsening of the flabby arm skin. Besides plastic surgery are there any particular exercises, sleeves, etc that may help? I do CrossFit 3xa week and walking other days. So I do lift weights in combo with cardio. Just thinking ahead and maybe can figure something out to help along the way. Also, what about garments, lotions, supplements etc??? Just a thought.  Thanks!

Anyone else struggling with panic post-op?

Agree with the others: 1) its normal 2) likely hormone driven, and 3) completely OK to ask for help when you need it. This is a major surgery that demands sudden, massive life changes, and it takes a toll on your body and mind. Its ok to feel the feelings and go through the process of grief/processing that comes after it. But do remember that all of *this* is temporary. Your body will heal, you won't be in pain forever, you will figure out how to eat and move and live with your new tiny tummy, and you will lose weight and get healthier along the way. That is the ultimate goal, this bit is just a phase. Take time to rest, ask as many questions as you need to, seek help from your providers, and give yourself lots of grace.

    Losing too much weight...

Like another poster said, no one can force you to have a surgery. My semi-ex-boyfriend has a BMI of 18 and he's extremely healthy, and eats healthy too. He's just naturally very thin. I would consider getting a DEXA scan to see how much muscle mass you have. You don't have to go in for a "clinical" one, but there are some private DEXA scan centers that can give you a pretty good idea. I went in for one right after I started losing weight pre-surgery to get a baseline. It was about $100, but their usual price is $150. Good luck!

    Losing too much weight...

I'm 5'6.5" According to the CDC, as my NP stated yesterday, I'm not underweight until my BMI falls under 18 or 19. But According to bariatric standards, I'm on the low weight side and my ideal weight should be 63kg and I'm 60.something kg.so, they said some people don't lose weight, some a little, some a lot and some they have to intervene to stop it. This, I'm now terrified of. I know where I've been, I don't want that and I know what it took to get me where I am now and it was hard. Good luck with your surgery. When are you scheduled?

    Hunger Pain

That's exactly what I dealt with. Eventually my doctor put me back on metformin. I don't have diabetes, but it can help with weight loss by making you not hungry. I was so upset that I was hungry after surgery, but the psychologist at my surgery center says about 20% of her patients don't lose their hunger. Good luck!
  19. Thank you for the answer I´m starting my process with them and on Jan 3rd I´ll have the sleeve. After 3 years, Have you been able to maintain your weight lost? It´s one of my main fears. Thank you
  20. Continue to follow the volume guidelines provided by your clinic. If you keep eating beyond the guidelines you won't gain the benefit of the surgery to learn a new way of eating and cooking. If told to eat more than 1 cup per meal, stop then even if you are neither full or satisfied.

    Losing too much weight...

OMG on your weight loss... AMAZING! Highly_Undermedicated, no one can force you to undergo a procedure - however, they can use those terms to get you to understand the risks of being underweight. As Arabesque suggested, continue conversation with your team and also acknowledge that "I just can't eat all that" is suggestive of an opportunity to look at what you are eating and compliment or replace the volume of what you are eating with something that would compliment both your body AND the doctors. Best Wishes, Will

    November 2021 surgeries

Have you discussed the stall with your NUT? Perhaps a bit more fat in your diet... hard to say what the contributors are but often (for me) it is muscle gain and according to my nut, try a few more fat grams to kick you out of it. I did stall for 3 days... no movement on the scale and I was like damn... gave here a quick txt and she said alter something about your diet so I did and walla... I'm out of it. Wish you all the best.
  23. Everything has gone by so fast. I had my gastric bypass on Monday 11/29. I'm Finnish so I did my surgery in Finland. Everything went well and the nurses were amazing, the whole experience was loving and calm. I feel extremely grateful for that. On Tuesday I could go home after getting in my 1000 ml of liquids. I never felt nausea, pain or discomfort why drinking and I tried to walk as much as I could. Gas pain was very difficult Wednesday and Tuesday. It's slowly leaving now, Friday. I've taken pain meds every evening and sometimes during the day if I get pain, but I'm trying to manage with the little pain I have. I'm excited for what's to come, it feels like a huge life changing moment, which it of course is. I'm scared and anxious as well; what if I never can eat a piece of sushi again, my absolute favourite food? What if I can't travel and enjoy the food? Food is such a big part of our lives and has so much to do with our social life and culture. I know it's worth it, I know this surgery is for me and for my future, for my health. But it's still scary. That's why I love going on here and reading everything. It gives me so much comfort to know there's so many people all over the world going through a similar experience. I'm gonna start weighing myself after two weeks after surgery, giving myself time to heal and rest for now. Here are some stats that I can look back on in the future. HW: 308 lb (140 kg) Operation weight: 291 lb (132kg) GW: in-between 130-150 lb Sent from my KB2003 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Losing too much weight...

it's very common to have a 10-20 lb regain in year 3 without much effort. I was convinced it would never happen to me - BUT...it did. That said, since you're dealing with too much muscle loss, then yes -it'd be good to stop the weight loss since you need to maintain your health. I started gradually adding calories when I got down into the 130s (too low for me) ("gradually adding" since it would have been too hard to suddenly add 500 or so calories a day to my diet - it took a few weeks to get up there).
