    Alcohol???

I was told no alcohol the first six weeks. You might want to check with your doctor.

    Alcohol???

My doctor says no alcohol. I'd check with your doctor since all are so different. Good luck!
  3. Don't want to sound like I'm an alcOholic or anything, but at times I enjoy a glass of red wine. I'm 2 weeks post op, have a bridal shower I'm hosting on April 1st and was wondering of its ok to drink? I totally forgot to ask the doctor. And if so has anyone had any issues with drinking? I know it's empty calories...
  4. Thanks Dee, for your response. i too gave up sugary stuff for lent even though I'm no longer a Catholic. Somehow the discipline of lent from youth is still with me; stuff I couldn't give up in January becomes easier to give up beginning Ash Wednesday. Lately I've been reducing the carbs too. This morning my weight was 120.8, Hurray! I can eat more than I used to be able to, so I think it's important for me to concentrate on Protein and vegetables and to limit carbs. I'm back eating artificial sweeteners and though I don't think they are actually healthy, they are far better than the alternative. Sugar is such a drug for me. The sugar alcohols have side effects which is a good thing for me. I cannot eat a 100gr bar of SF chocolate because of the stomach cramps it causes. This means that my portion sizes are reasonable and not gluttonous--in the end a very good thing indeed. I think the weight thing will always be a struggle for me, but at least I have a chance of winning this battle now instead of trying my hardest and losing miserably. I feel pretty good of my protein-first diet. My BF and housemate are both on no sugar diets so I don't have loads of temptattion. My boy still eats sugar with abandon, but I can dismiss that more easily. Sugar now seems like pixie sticks or cotton candy--stuff you eat in your youth but wouldn't really ingest during adulthood.
  5. I don't believe in "good" or "bad" foods. We did have this surgery to LIVE, not to DIET. My mindset is Protein first, always. At the wing place, I'd have eaten chicken wings rather than zucchini, because the wings have protein and the fried zucchini has way less protein. Of course, I'd have only been able to eat 3 wings, at most, so that would have limited the amount of protein. But, when it comes to the bottom line, I aim for my protein and Water daily. If I have room for other things, then I will add in veggies and some carbs. Do NOT beat yourself up over a one time indulgence in ice cream, though. You're going to have days where you get all your protein and water and days where you don't meet the protein goal. That's life and we all do it. As you get further out from surgery, you will find that it gets easier to meet those protein goals. You will have to change your mindset to meet them, but you will get there. For me, it sometimes seems like I do better when I don't do everything perfect anyway. Yesterday I had a couple of drinks with friends. This morning I posted an almost 2 pound loss. That loss may actually be related to the amount of exercise I've been doing, or it may be related to TOM, but my diet yesterday included alcoholic beverages, which are often considered too high calorie for us. Sometimes we have to shake things up to keep the scale moving and especially to make sure we are still LIVING, not DIETING.

She had RNY with a pouch and stoma. The pouch is made from the stretchy tissue (fundus) of the stomach, and the stoma is a man-made hole so stretching of both are common with RNY. She never stuck with healthy eating and alcohol consumption was a leading factor to her regain as detailed by her husband and her self-admission of eating the wrong foods especially after the birth of her children.

    Worry Wart

Thank you for the site to visit for bariatric recipes and the words of encouragement. I have barely been eating anything... not because I am not hungry but because I am afraid I won't lose weight. It is good to hear of your yummy menu and this will encourage me to try more food rather than just sticking to a few basic items. I tried to cook a large buffet style menu for guests with all healthy type of menu and it was good but seemed very strange to me to be thinking that way. It may take some practice believing that healthy recipes can taste as good as the ones with all the cream and butter! But I will stick to my plan which of course is to lose weight. TOday I saw the gp for my first post op check at 6 weeks and wow. The results were somewhat shocking. Off all meds since surgery yet my BP, cholesterol and sugar levels are WAY down compared to when I was on the meds. What an improvement. She believes my gout may also no longer be a problem although I had no testing done to show that. She tried to claim that this is due to not being able to drink alcohol but I pointed out (silly md) that I used to only have a few drinks once every couple of months so I don't think that small amount of liquor contributed to my having gout. It is amazing to see the change in medical results and the improvements and I remind myself that these are worth even more than the improved appearance. Thanks again.

Gonna Get To Goal. Wanna Join Me?

Hey all - need some advice from me fellow nearly-theres: I have not lost any weight since Christmas and have possibly even gained 3 lbs. Now it is true that I have been struggling with bad foods, there have been doughnuts, snickers, and alcohol (oh my), but even with all that, my calories almost never top 12-1500. Even on the day when I have had a doughnut my calories are at 1200, with carbs no greater than 50. I have a lot of people, friends and strangers, comment on my exercise habits. They are all like, "wow, you work out a LOT". Which got me to thinking, yeah, you know, I DO work out a lot. So, WTF, where are the results? Five days a week I work out, and I do all the stuff you are supposed to do - change it up, cardio, don't let my body get used to a routine, Water, blahblahblah. I run over a mile a day now, do yoga twice a week, dance tango twice a week, lift weights, strength training, eat high Protein... How could my 5'3" body "want" to be at 170 pounds?? How?!! =(
  9. I've had wine and champagne. Just some sips, not the whole glass. Also, I was at least 4 1/2, maybe 5 months out. I've only done it a few times on special occations. Oh, last weekend I had a chocolate martini! ... well, about three sips of one! But it was good! It was at a comedy club! I don't really want the emply calories and I've never been much of a drinker so If it turned out I could not have any alcohol at all, I would be fine with it. As long as I get my sleeve!!! :-)
  10. Okay thanks. I know a alot about liquor (well at least my favorite ones) including the caloric content. I was a gym rat a few years ago and I googled all of my favorite drinks for the alcohol content. Can't remember the exact numbers but it was like 1000 cals for one of my favorite drinks depending on the size. I'm not a big drinker, just was interested on how it affects some, and if there was a "list' on here. I was watching someones youtube, and she still felt the liquor the next day, but she was drinking at 4 weeks out so I'm sure it would be different later. I guess there's only one way to find out.
  11. I have found that I react to alcohol the same way I did before I was sleeved. I was a big partyer when I was younger and now one or two drinks is plenty; as Indymom noted, alcohol is empty calories. I have no idea how long it takes to leave my system but I don't wake up with a hangover after one or two screwdrivers.
  12. My doctor put no alcohol on the paper like that's going to happen. So what I want to know is how long does it take to leave your system?
  13. I waited until I was about 4 months out (my doc said 3-6 months). I drink pretty much whatever I want, obviously in moderation. I've had beer, wine, mixed drinks, etc. The carbonation in beer can cause a little discomfort, I usually drink a wheat beer like blue moon that isn't highly carbonated and I always drink out of a glass. Alcohol (especially mixed with high-calorie mixers like fruit juices) is TOTAL empty calories, so most surgeons warn against drinking during the weight loss phase. It can also lead to crossover addictions, so be cautious. I'm a social drinker and haven't noticed that it has impacted my weight loss at all (I don't even bother tracking/logging my drinking on MFP) so each person may have different experiences with it.
  14. On another forum someone mentioned the allowable liquors/wines for RNY, I am sure it would be the same idea for sleevers. I know sleevers aren't suppose to have any type of alcohol, etc. Anywho, what have you sipped on, and how did you feel?

    Savory Puree Recipes

I've also been into low fat cottage cheese (I'm a Knudsen snob - it's the creamiest) and then stirring in 1 tablespoon of sugar free preserves (Smuckers strawberry or apricot). Another good mushy option. Just don't go overboard on the fruit spread because the alcohol sugars could upset your tummy or trigger dumping if you eat too much. Find me on Pinterest to see my "Weight Loss Surgery Tools" board. I have a ton of other ideas pinned there.

    Pop

I drink pop sometimes, but it depends, it can irritate a little the first couple of sips. I've always been a fan of Diet Coke and love it, but I don't drink it much anymore. I do drink alcohol frequently, and don't have a problem with it. I love my wine....lol! However, we have to remember it still has calories, so you need to adjust your daily accordingly. Also many people find they feel the effects sooner so can't drink as much anymore. Not necessarily a bad thing!

    Alcohol?

I have had alcohol on several occasions since my surgery. The first was at 3 weeks out and I had two glasses of wine over the course of about 5 hours. I made sure to get in all my Protein that day using my shakes and then actually budgeted the calories into my plan for the day. Just be sure to make sure it's not a really bubbly wine. I drank Riesling. The second occasion was about 6 wks out and I drank a margarita on the rocks and a vodka cranberry. (those were not budgeted in but I actually lost weight the morning after.) I will say the only issue I have had was the frozen margarita I tried to drink last weekend. I got down about half of it and was sick to my stomach. I guess it's all the sugar in a frozen drink. Whatever you choose to do is up to you personally! Good luck to you!! Kacy Sent from my iPhone using VST

    Alcohol?

Kimmy thank you for your post. I do love reading this blog but sometimes it is hard to find the someone who has the same opinion as I do, I am a new yorker and almost every thing we do here involves alcohol, am not saying I HAVE to drink but I was hoping to see someone who actually did drink and how they reacted to the alcohol.

    Alcohol?

I went to a crab feed 2 weeks out from surgery and had vodka cranberry, no issues at all. It was mostly cranberry and I sipped it for a long time. I think if you just have one small glass and sip it over a period of time you will be ok. We are not in a prison, we are talking real life here, we are going to be in situations where we are around alcohol and need to learn how to handle it in our own way. Best of luck on your decision.

    Alcohol?

I am normally the " drinker " of the bunch so I will have to respond to my non drinking but I am a terrible liar. I will most likely ge he drink and just not drink it or order a juice and try to pawn it off as a cocktail. I do not want anything to derail my weight loss alcohol is not that important! Thanks to all for your suggestions!

    Alcohol?

I am 5.5 months post op and I haven't had any alcohol and I don't choose too. When I go out, I don't explain anything to any one and no one really cares anyways. It's mostly our anxiety that prevents us from being ourselves and I am proud of my decisions. I don't need to play the social rules game and I don't tell them about my surgery either. This is me and I choose to be me, I'm normal...... Go to these events and forget about your sleeve, think healthy and smile because you look fantastic! You are beautiful! SMILE!

    Alcohol?

I am about 9 months post-op. I had a 3oz margarita at a party in November at 5 months. I will tell you it hit me far faster than it had ever before. Also my nut and surgeon both suggest waiting a year before drinking alcohol, as it can slow weight loss since it is liquid calories. On the other hand if you decide to have a drink, remember that you don't have to drink a coctail at the event. I have found getting a glass of cranberry juice generally throws people off at those functions. Plus I don't have to explain anything I'm not comfortable explaining to strangers. Good Luck!
  23. I begin my liquid diet on Monday for surgery on the 10th. I am dreading this more than having my stomach removed. My reaction to food deprivation is scary. I turn into a child begging for food, crying, sometimes yelling...and I'm a successful 37 year old woman! I'm going to do it though. What I want to know is of the 1000 calories I am allowed to have, should I be able to choose any liquid to eat as long as I stay in my calorie range? (Except alcohol of course!) Meaning do I have to pay strict attention to fat and carbs? What would happen if I cheated one night? (Going to a party for the Hunger Games (ha ha) and there will be mounds of food.) At 220 lbs and a BMI of 42, does anyone know the amount of weight I would be expected to lose? Does anyone have any tips or tricks that they did during their 2 week pre-op? Thanks, guys, I'm so glad you're here.

    Alcohol?

I am pre-op and I enjoy drinking now. I do not drink daily but my husband and I are social and we drink a couple of days a week.(Atleast, once a week.) I think 6 weeks may be too early. That is just my opinion. I will probobly at some point partake again but I know it will not be until I am closer to goal and I will try it at home with hubby before I try it in public just to see how it affects me. As far as keeping the surgery to yourself, just tell anyone that is trying to encourage you to drink that you are on a med that prohibits alcohol for the time being. Just a suggestion. Hope it helps

    Alcohol?

I'm not sure if 6 weeks is too early or not, but I know that alcohol isn't banned later on. My surgeon said I was fine to drink on my birthday (my 21st...) and that was at about 4.5 months out. I would be worried about the acidity affecting your sleeve... I would be worried that maybe your sleeve won't like it. To be safe, I would just ask your surgeon. If you can't then you can't.. there are lots of reasons why people don't drink... like medications... or you could take the wine and not really drink it.
