  1. My surgery is scheduled for 12/2. My surgeons office gave me a very specific liquid diet to follow for one week. If anyone is interested I can post a copy. It included fat free no sugar added pudding, soups, yogurts, meal replacements, etc.
  2. What kind of liquids? I'm on liquids but "full liquids" and my surgeon allows blenderized Soups, Greek yogurt, thinned out cream of wheat, etc It is tough, but I'm only 5 days post op so I have no real desire to eat I just do it because I have to. I definitely couldn't cheat, I'm too afraid to damage my new stomach. At this point I've been on this diet for nearly 3 weeks so one more wont kill me. I am pretty excited for scrambled eggs and tuna though!

    Breaking the Dr's orders

I really dont understand why people find liquids and mushies so hard - I kind of want to highlight what Berry said about making up potato and watering it down. That's not illegal! The thing with liquids and mushies is the consistency of the foods, NOT what you acually eat. If it will go up a straw its liquid. So liquidise REAL food, dont try to get by on shakes, juice, water, cottage cheese and yogurt. No wonder you're starving. Make some decent soup, with some meat and pasta in it, liquidise some chicken and potato and vegies with gravy, or stock, you can liquidise nearly anything. Breakfast could be a protein shake with a banana blended into it, you could have some yogurt mid morning, some sort of protein, carb and vegetable concoction for lunch, blended fruit in the afternoon and something similar to lunch for dinner. You dont have to starve. You have to figure out a way to feed yourself real food in liquid form. Cook something - dont just rely on packets, boxes and powders or you will be hungry and find it really hard to stick to. Mushies can be every bit as varied, filling and satisfying as a regular solid diet. When you cook up a roast chicken and vegetables for the family for dinner, give yours a stab (no skin!) with a stick blender and gravy. Instant mushies. You dont have to live on cottage cheese. Make some lentil dahl with a dab of natural yogurt, or a minestrone soup, or similar. My instructions from my doc were to try to get in 1200 calories a day during this stage to make sure what I lost was healthy weight loss - fat - not muscle, water and a bit of fat. Those massive weight losses at the start arent really any indication of how you'll go further down the track anyway. If you happen to heal quickly and well and lose your restriction quickly and have a long period of hunger before your first fill then it will be hard - but it need not be any harder than being on a diet normally is. We've all done that for six weeks havent we? Its keeping it up long term that's the really hard bit. Two weeks of clear liquids - now that IS very hard. I dont think I could have done it to be honest. I dont blame anyone for caving on that.

    First Doctor's Appointment Post Op

Yester day, August 30th I went to the surgeons office. When I was weighed I had lost 24 pounds. The nurse was very excited about that. When the Doctor came in he started to look at my chart and said do you know how much you have lost? I told him yes, but that I did lose some of the weight prior to surgery as I had cut back on my carbs and had been walking 2 miles on my treadmill. I probably had lost 10 pounds from May until my August 17th surgery. While I was there he took off my steri strips that had been covering my incisions. He said I was healing very well. I am happy anyway for the 24# loss. I am scheduled to go back to him on Sept. 12. He told me I could eat anything you would feed a baby. So I had a cup of clam chowder last evening. Yogurt fro breakfast as usual.
  8. Needed: crystal light, small pillows , comfortable clothes. small bottles of Water. Wasted $, large bottle of benefiber, made me gassy n bloated, gummy Vitamins, not good for lapbandsters. certain kind of yogurts, powdered yogurt, chalky flavor.
  9. I think maybe you are eating too many "liquids" (oatmeal and yogurt are liquids) anything you have to eat with a spoon is a liquid and passes thru band quick, therefore being hungrier later- try a solid protein- like a protein bar or egg or something.I'm struggling with the amt of calories i need myself!( see my "ughhh so frustrated" topic lol
  10. I use mihealth to log everything that I eat. It keeps track of my calories and nutrition and gives me a summary daily. I don't do well with out it, it is SO easy to slip in a couple hundred calories accidentally. I'm doing about 1100 calories a day. I need over 60 grams protein a day. I usually eat eggs for breakfast (so easy to make a big batch and portion for the week). I have a protein drink after I exercise (odwalla or bolthouse), salmon or homemade white chili for dinner and a protein bar as a snack. I'm not hungry very often and I'm getting 70+ grams of protein. I have had to stop doing all liquid calories (oragne juice is my bad) except my post workout protein drink. Nuts are a great snack too and I buy the little packs and carry them with me. I dont leave the house without a protein bar and bottle of water, ever. A couple sugar free jolly ranchers cover me when I have a sweet attack. Carbs (yogurt, oatmeal, etc) tend to trigger hunger for me so I'm very low carb.

    Infamous Left shoulder pain

Interesting! I had it really bad the last two days (not today). However, I felt a twinge today when I ate my first full liquid in 3 weeks (1/2 c. yogurt). So I have a feeling I'm going to be the opposite of you - feeling that pain when I get towards satisfied/full. Amy

    Fluids fluids fluids

For my post op liquid diet I can only have milk, yogurts, protein drinks, and broth. Its a very boring diet. Im starting to hate protein drinks.
  13. I had surgery January 22nd. The third day I was tired and cried about what did I do, I can't eat pizza again. I think when I didn't feel good is when I would eat comfort food. So of course I didn't feel good after surgery and couldn't eat to feel better. So my sleeve likes nonfat yogurt, refried beans with a bit of low fat mozzarella, soups, mashed potatoes and shakes. I tried salmon that was soft it didn't like it. If it's mushy it seems ok. Everything on the nutritionists list for week 2 and 3 works but if I jump ahead it definitely doesn't work. So nonfat Greek yogurt may be my new comfort food.

    No Fill Yet

I was banded 8/13/12, have lost 32 lbs without a fill, and yet got my first fill yesterday. My issue, historically, hasn't been taking it off, it has been keeping it off. I'm hoping with everything working together I'll change my eating habits so that if I ever need my band removed or emptied that I will be in a place where it won't make any difference. Right now I am so obsessed with losing the weight that I am not eating a diet that would satisfy me for the rest of my life. I want to eat 'regular', but band ok, food. Now I'm living on yogurt, cottage cheese, and eggs simply because I feel confident that I can control what I eat, how much I eat, and still lose weight. I want to be able to be satisfied with regular food, but in smaller more appropriate serving sizes. I am definately a work in progress.

I survivied and am back home!

Hiya Kimberly! So glad to hear that you were safely transported to bandland! I wasn't given a specific brand for Protein supp... was just told to choose a whey Protein Drink and that my total daily protein intake should be 60 grams or more. I chose unjury chocolate flavor and the unflavored mixed with the low carb carnation instant Breakfast. My diet orders were a lot different than yours... but while I was on Clear liquids... popsicles were my best friend... as well as SF Jello. When you get to full liguids... yogurt without chunks of fruit goes down well and NF pudding. I also ate cream of tomato Soup and other strained cream Soups during the full liquid stage. I don't know if you saw the pics of my belly after being banded... I'll attatch one just so that you won't feel alone with your bruising! Congratulation girlie! Darcy
  16. I've tried dipping it in seasoned greek yogurt, marinading, drowning it in hot sauce with a lil lite blue cheese on top lol. Anyone else wanna chime in?

Eat the carbs before working out as they are burned first before hitting muscle. Eat Proteins after workout. Supplement with Protein shake (130 calories and 23 grams protein) Protein Bars (low fat like Power Bars about 205 calories and 14 grams protein). Fat free cheese (25 calories and 5 grams protein) Fat Free Milk, 1cup (90 calories, 9 grams protein) Greek Yogurt (160 calories, 14 grams protein) Fat Free Cottage Cheese. 1/2 cup (80 calories, 13 grams protein) Mix up routine. DO NOT just do Zumba. Your body will adjust to workout, memory has muscle as well as brain. Incorporate some weight training, running, bicycling. Try a personal trainer for a few weeks help break up routine and give instruction on how to burn the fat, not the muscle.
  18. Try softer Proteins, you will be able to eat more and get more Protein....cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, tuna salad, refried Beans, spam, skim milk, split pea Soup, cheese, eggs. As for Protein shakes, which ones have you tried? There's dozens and dozens of different brands and at least as many flavors. You don't have to stick with just the thick, sweet, chocolate/vanilla/strawberry ones. The RTD shakes would make me gag, but I learned to dilute them with milk and have tried at least 15 different products to find the ones I like. I'm enjoying a cherry lemonade Syntax nectar Protein Drink on ice right now. There are also pea protein, egg protein, hemp protein and sprouted seed protein products out there if it's the whey/milk that your body doesn't like. It's important for you to get your protein or your body will suffer. Even at 6 months I can't eat enough to meet goals without at least one shake /day.

    Help-food stuck...

Hi, First let me say I know it was a dumb thing to do. But I am a week post -op and everything has been fine. I'd been doing Clear liquids for a week and been having no problems. Although, I am pretty hungry and today I was looking forward to eating yogurt as an approved added food. Like a dummy I read somewhere on this site that about a soft boiled egg and I thought, well maybe that might be a nice thing to have, since I am lactose intolerant. I even food proccessed it so it was liquid like egg beaters, but of course it didn't seem warm enough for me so I microwaved it! Brilliant huh? Well that of course made it harder so it was back to the food processor to reliquefy it. I had a few bites of this now mousse like substance and I regret it. I got the golf ball feeling right away, and started sweating. But, I regained my wits and heard that I shouldn't eat or drink anything. I just walked around and waited and waited. I called the Dr. after 2 1 /2 hours he said that I should walk around and not eat or drink anything. It's now been 7 hours I am not in pain and not sweating but the feeling like its still right there in my chest persists. I am now getting thirsty. What should I do? I am afraid to call my Doc again in case it just goes down. I read through and heard about the meat tenderizer thing, but waiting to see if it will just go down. Has anyone had anything stuck for a really long time without sliming or PBing? Will I have to go somewhere to get the offending few bites out? Its the weekend of course, now and I'm just scared. I don't need a lecture, b/c I know better now and I'm so soon after surgery my doc does not want me to PB b/c band could slip. Sorry I am so long winded, I think I'll be okay but I need reassurance and other bandster's experience. Thanks...
  20. My doctor's orders were... Days 1-3 clear fluids Day 4-17 full liquids. (Protein shakes, broth and cream Soups with Protein powder added) Day 18-28 puréed (refried Beans, eggs, puréed soups with unflavored protein powder, puréed tuna, cottage cheese, plain Greek yogurt flavored with protein powder or puréed fruit, soft cheeses, guacamole, hummus) Day 29-40 soft foods (all of the above plus really moist chicken, soft fishes, all cheeses, soft cooked veggies like squash, cauliflower and carrots, seafood, all soups, canned corned beef, deviled ham, burger, chili) Day 41+ regular food except nuts, chips, seeds, etc which Were off limits till 3 months out. My restriction was so good I actually had to transition slower than what my doc suggested. And I never got sick of liquids because I had such a huge variety.... Dozens of flavors of Protein Shakes as well as every variety of broth, cream Soup and bisque I could find. I still drink most of these things even 8 months out or I couldnt meet protein goals
  21. You're going to have to feed your body. At this point, your body is eating your muscle mass, and it is dangerous. My surgeon had the same concerns, but I was eating, and he threatened to put in a feeding tube if I didn't amp up my calories. Your mind is not going to catch up for several months so you are going to have to take the medical advice and start eating and drinking more. There are soy Proteins that you can mix with almond, soy milk, or Water. I personally could not tolerate those either. BUT, you need to start drinking your fluids. You're body is going to shut down, and you don't want to be hospitalized again, do you? Get some regular gatorade, your heart needs fluids along with electrolytes, the potassium will help with your leg cramps, get some yogurt in if you can, you are going to have to listen to your medical team, and if you aren't willing to listen to them, you need to seek counseling. Just because your mind is lagging behind on what you see in the mirror, doesn't mean you need to let your body suffer in the process. If you are Vitamin and Protein deficient, you need to start feeding your body. Something will work for you, and you have to be willing to stop worrying about a gain, if your body shuts down. Losing weight is fabulous, but you really have gone from one extreme to the next which is not uncommon. I was scared to gain too, but you know I never had a stall. I lost steadily every week, some weeks it was only a pound or 2, but I lost weight. Please take care of yourself. You've gone through so much to get healthy, stop starving your body.

    Can't eat

The recovery from the swelling varies from person to person. My surgery was 10/25 and I am mostly on puree but can do mushy if I chew it to puree. I am full on 3 oz.And I am still getting 3/4 of my Protein from protein powder. I like the unjury unflavored mostly I just blend it 1% milk but I also blend it into cottage cheese, you're and no added sugar pudding. I have a hard time with smells and the powder really grossed me out for a while so I mixed the powder right into the yogurt and cottage cheese so it's ready to eat when I want it. I add 2 scoops (42gr) per large tub. The smell doesn't bother me now, now it's just bacon, car exhaust, wet dogs, teen bys laundry...

    food diary

Okay ladies I've been slacking about writing down my food intake...so have been tyring this week to do it. I've noticed a couple of things. I eat a heck alot of tofu and yogurt and I need to step away from the animal crackers...who knew I was eating so many...obviously not me! LOL Anyway if anyone has time to look in on my food diary for the last few days I'd appreciate it. I have to decide if I should cancel the fill scheduled and just work myself harder...or if the fill would be benificial. Just a warning Sunday was terrible as far as food choices go...but after I got stuck on the burrito (first couple bite as I only had 4 bites) I let myself have starbucks and part of a carmel apple. Someone slap me LOL. Follow the link in the sig to see the food diary. thanks
  25. I just had a single graham cracker sheet with a tbsp of reduced fat PB. I also eat fruit, or grab a slice of sandwich meat, or some baby carrots/raw broccoli with ranch dip, a yogurt, applesauce, basically whatevers handy that doesn't scream "you may as well just rub me on your thighs cause I'm headed straight there anyway" when i look at it
