What can I do with...cottage cheese?
Bigguy9347 replied to Inner Surfer Girl's topic in Regular foods (stage 4)
I love to add it to chili. I also like to add a couple.tbls to some fage plain Greek yogurt with Davinci's sugar free raspberry or Carmel syrup and 1 scoop unflavored unjury. An easy protein packed treat -
I was also sleeved 12/08/15. I am down 25-26, depending on time of day I am weighed, lol. I also feel like I should have lost more by now. Don't get me wrong, I am ecstatic that I've lost what I have, I never could have done it without the sleeve. Something in my brain is telling me that I am failing, even though my surgeon told me at my one month follow up that he is happy with my progress and I'm "right on track" with what he expected. I am eating well and getting in my fluids, but am having some food issues. I am fine through breakfast and lunch, but at dinner I seem to be able to eat more. I am following plan almost exactly as it is outlined in binder(I use pretty much all of the sample days menus) and feel like it's just too much. I feel guilty about eating the portion I do, even though it is actually a little less than the plan. I hope the weight loss continues as I think I'm going to try to up my fluid intake between meals(nothing 30 before, during, or 30 after meals). I always eat protein first and limit carbs to mainly dairy(cottage cheese, milk, Greek yogurt, etc.). I do need some carbs as I am a type-1 diabetic on an insulin pump, which also doesn't help the weight come off easily("insulin holds the fat", as my endocrinologist says). Here's to breaking through the stall and getting the weight coming off again/faster.

You definitely sound dehydrated and undernourished. Have you tried Syntrax nectar Protein? They are like koolaid so they may not fill you up as much as the milk-based shakes do. They come in variety of flavors. 2 scoops in 32 oz Water would give you 40g protein you could sip on all day. Add in a couple cups of decaf herbal tea (warm liquids went down better for me), another couple cups of water and you've got your fluids in. Try adding unflavored Protein powder to some Soups. They may not fill you up like dense Proteins do, so you can get more in. Plain Greek yogurt flavored with vanilla protein powder would give you a big protein boost, too. I had to sip all day long from the moment I Woke up till the minute I went to bed. I never didn't have a water bottle in my hand and I rarely ate/drank anything that didn't contain protein. And I did not go to bed until I got my 64 oz and 60+g. You have to make these a priority. They are WAY more important than excercise at this point. -

Either you are getting terrible medical advice that varies from just about every other Bariatric surgeon on the planet or you are seriously misunderstanding it. You can't thrive if you're not getting enough Water. Of course you're exhausted and can't work out. Your body is fighting for survival. You need minimum 64 oz every day. You're getting a third of your MINIMUM. You also need Protein if you hope not to starve. Without enough protein your body will begin feeding on itself, including the muscle you need to have the energy to do things like breathe and be awake. You need to be much more concerned about water and protein, unless there is a legitimate medical reason your doctor doesn't want you taking protein, which I can't really imagine. It's hard to imagine a Bariatric surgeon approving a candidate for surgery that can't have protein. Try protein shots, protein puddings, adding protein to yogurt, applesauce, whatever. I have been drinking Isopure low carb protein water. A 20 oz bottle has 40 grams of protein. That's half of your protein requirement and a third of your liquid requirement in one bottle. And it tastes like kook aid. And I haven't even had surgery yet. Seriously you need to take proper care of yourself. Nobody else is going to do it for you. -
I second what Inner Surfer Girl suggested. Also of the things you can eat, like the cottage cheese and yogurt, have you tried mixing in a little of the unflavored Protein powders into those things? I know for me early on I was struggling with getting protein in and the flavored powder mixes were just too sweet tasting to me. I went with ISO pure unflavored and was mixing it into my tomato/crème of chicken Soups. It didn't alter the flavoring that much and I was able to gain a few more grams of protein in a day. As for seeking out a nutritionist, if your surgeon's office doesn't have one on staff, what about your primary care doctor's office?

I definitely think you should talk to your surgeon's office if you don't have a NUT. You have got to get in your Protein. Based on what you described I would suggest that you eat frequent small meals and Snacks throughout the day. If you can only eat 1/3 of cottage cheese or yogurt at a time then you may need to eat more often.

i can't do powders but i can do the premier Protein. and it's only 11oz so it's not too hard to drink. there are some yogurts that have 13g or protein (chobani). also pumpkin seeds and such have lots of protein. bison/buffalo has a lot as well.

Hi all! I'm 2.5 months out from being sleeved (SW- 265)... I'm just not getting my Protein in. I've tried multiple (and if anyone wants the lbs and lbs of powder with 1 scoop used, I'll happily send it to get it out of my kitchen) MULTIPLE protein powders. Both plain and flavored. I can't find any that I don't gag after 2 sips. I'm not sure if it's a texture thing or what... Anyhow, I maybe get 20-30g of protein a day... And yes, I know that's way too low. I'm at my wits end on what to do. I eat as often as I can. However, I can't even consume 1/3rd of a chicken breast before reaching the puke point. I've tried softer things (cottage cheese, tuna, yogurt, etc...) but it's still at about the 1/3 cup point that I start to get that full feeling. I'm looking for ANY suggstions. No, I haven't talked to my NOT because I don't have one. My insurance doesn't cover it and my surgeon's office doesn't have one. Any suggestions for protein boost?? Thanks!

one of the best things I have been doing for myself is staying in touch with what happens in this group! I used to not press the "notify me" button, but now when somebody posts I o ow it!! when I have time, I read it. Just this simple task helps me stay in the game. It is such a simple thing. Now that I'm a normal-weight person, where there is not even a hint of diabetes, I tend to want to forget. So that's it for today. I e been to the pool for 90 minutes and had my fave yogurt breakfast with an orange and bluebies. Also cinnamon and nutmeg. I just don't know about lunch. keep your courage.

Plain nonfat Greek yogurt is a good substitute for mayo, sour cream etc you can season it up. Mayo doesn't make me feel great and the yogurt is high in protein! -

As I am very early in my journey, I find if I follow my surgeons rules with protein first, I don't have room for carbs. I do eat cottage cheese, all kinds of cheese, apple slices with peanut butter, and yogurt which all have carbs. I just make my main focus protein and less than 50 carbs per day. I stay away from white carbs because they bring on sugar cravings ( I found this out when I enjoyed my planned Christmas treats)

lean protein like chicken, turkey, tuna. yogurt and cottage cheese, mozzarella and mild cheddar cheeses. bananas and other soft fruit when I could fit it in. Refried beans and eggs were a favorite, with a sprinkle of cheese. A cheese stick rolled up in a slice of lunch meat was great too, but it was a little too much for me to eat in one meal. Chili (I prefer to make my own but in a pinch a small chili from wendy's would sooth my stomach for some reason). I think I had started protein bars by then too, though I could only eat half at a time and it took a long while. Hope this helps.

Feeling like I've failed...
Bufflehead replied to hibiscusfoot-NC's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Exercise really has very little to do with weight loss, so take your mind off your injury and your inability to exercise. Don't feel like, I can't exercise so I will never succeed and should just give up. People who are quadriplegic can lose weight -- it all has to do with what you eat, and you can control it. Here are my rules for myself when I find myself straying and need to get back on track (and trust me, I have been there). They are a complete pain in the butt and it isn't fair that I have to do this kind of work -- but life isn't fair and the truth is I am going to have to work hard at my weight for the rest of my life. So I whine a bit and then I get over it. --set specific, firm, daily goals for calories, carbs, and protein --weigh or measure every food that doesn't come in single-serve portions (yogurt container, jerky stick, egg) --track my eating every day on myfitnesspal --plan what I am going to eat in advance each day and write it down in a schedule. Then when I get hungry or tempted by something in the middle of the day, I can tell myself, "it sucks to be hungry, but you can wait until your 2 pm snack, you will have an apple then" --eliminate high carb and sugary foods that trigger hunger and don't satisfy: all grains, refined sugar, and high carb veggies such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, and peas. Focus on lean meat/fish and green veggies, with smaller amounts of dairy, nuts, and fruit. --get foods that don't meet my nutritional goals out of the house --don't take money or any way to pay for things with me when I go to work. Good luck to you! -
What’s Your Attitude Towards Carbs?
WalkOnWaking replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Food and Nutrition
@@Sharon1964, you made me laugh so hard when I read your post. That is exactly the way I felt about carbs (but you left out the mini York Peppermint Patties!) The only carbs I take in are with veggies. I have a bag of frozen berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries) in the freezer - its been there since 2 weeks pre-op. I'm just afraid to have even one piece still. Although, for fruit, they are lower in sugar than most. I can do a very small amount of cheese if its 'real' cheese, not anything processed like American cheese. And so far, milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. makes me nauseous. I used to love yogurt and cottage cheese. And I used to love tuna. A bit of mayo to kill the tuna taste, and a small amount of relish to kill the mayo taste. I've tried it twice since surgery (once I was cleared for soft foods) and got sick each time. The only times that nausea turned to actual upchucking since the surgery. -
I use the Syntrax Nectar. My favorite is the Vanilla Bean. I put frozen fruit in it & sometimes I add a little yogurt. I also mix it with Silk milk. I can't stand it with water. Everyone's taste is different. I've tried stuff other people liked & I couldn't tolerate it. I also like the chocolate & strawberry Premier Protein shakes.

What’s Your Attitude Towards Carbs?
Sharon1964 replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Food and Nutrition
For me, Mister Carb is the driver on the bus to hell. I have zero control when I start eating carbs. Garlic bread is the devil's work. Buttery white rice with salt and pepper - I become a fiend. pizza, I will CUT YOU if you try to take my pizza. See? See how I get? I can't go there. I can't do moderation at this point, five months out. Since I can't eat any more than 1/3 cup at a time, I eat Protein and a couple of bites of green vegetable. The carbs I get are in greek yogurt and cheese. Maybe once a week I have a couple of grapes. -
I'm still early in the game(sleeved 12/08/15) so I try to limit my carbs to dairy only. I am a type-1 diabetic on an insulin pump so unfortunately, some carbs are almost a necessity for me. Those are mainly in milk and/or Greek yogurt form, which are fairly low. I am allowed to have saltine crackers with my tuna, rice, grits or oatmeal, etc. on this phase in the diet, but I haven't because I feel like that would be a slippery slope for me.

Starting regular food tomorrow! Nervous!
Scorpion11 replied to amandasue's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Amandasue, I 2nd Inner Surf Girl I'm 2 yrs out, I felt the very same as you did, always start with your Protein shakes or that's what I would suggest. If you haven't already tried the premier Proteins, 16oz, 160 calories, 30mg protein, 1gram sugar, highly suggest. They a are ready to drink flavored vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. I purchase mind at costco 24.99 for 18 PK. I kept some at work, carry bag etc.. ***3 of these in one day meet my quota of 90mg of my doctors suggest protein. So I alway keep in stock in case I'm not Ferlinghetti well or hungry, I make sure to drink my protein which is also considered a part of our Water intake quota ???? My first meat and 1day to switch to food was on Thanksgiving day I ate a piece of turkey w/gravy a tiny piece of ham and chewed, chewed and chewed every bite as I was so nervous and didn't really know how much I could eat. You will know when to stop when you start to feel a burp, it's kind of hard to explain but you will know. Other foods that I started with were that tasted good to me and good force of protein I started slowly on soft foods, such as yogurt Fage is my favorite to this date has 22mg of protein, 0 calories, I think 7 grams of sugar or less. That's my Breakfast daily w/honey. I need a bit of sugar as I'm hypoglycemia, add sunflower seeds sometimes for crunch, sometimes a spoon of Peanut Butter or strawberry jelly or a bit of orange juice to flavor it up, weird I know just get creative with what you like or goes with your taste buds as they will be out of control for at least 6 months from wls day. I do different things to change things up that taste good to me, but focus on getting in protein in first, then soft veggies like streamed or sautéed broccoli, asparagus, spinach, zucchini's etc. 1 scrambled egg with butter as we need to start incorporating fat or your choice of oil. Not I can eat up to 2 or 3 scrambled. I only do 3 on days I know I have lots of running around to do to stay full before a late lunch. Tuna with fish oil I like to mix at times in with lemon, mayo, celery and now boiled eggs. Make a bowl, les e in fridge and eat for lunch until I run out. I still make chicken or beef Soups with veggies and blend up and drink it as a meal. Ground turkey meat Soup, add your preferred choice of veggies. I like to add variety of Beans at times and make almost into a Pasta fagoli of course without pasta. Mozzarella cheese for Snacks Beans smashed up or how you prefer add cheese to flavor Hope this helps, you will find your preferred foods, just chew away, always and wash down later with your water Good luck, and stay hydrated!!! Enjoy your new menu ???? -

The only carbs I eat are the ones in high Protein foods.... Greek Yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. I really have a difficut time getting all my protein in, so there isn't room for alot of carbohydrate. I do try to occasionally eat vegetables of some sort, but I stick to lower carb veggies. I also found that increasing my carb count for a couple days helps to break a stall.
