    My journey so far

I started my lap band journey in Janaury 2008 by attending a seminar presented by Dr. Carlos Barba. My decision to start the journey was primarily based on what my weight was doing to my body. After my son was born in Feb 07 I developed major problems with my back, a herniated disk. They also said I was borderline diabetic. The doc suggested that weight loss would make it better. It has been hard for me to get around and even do simple things like playing on the floor with my son. I guess you can say that he has been my greatest motivation through all of this. I have been on several different diets throughout my life and they all worked, for a little while at least. But you always gain back more than you lost. So I very hesitantly started on my lap band journey, not sure if it was really something I could do. After talking with the surgeon and going though all those appts and doing hours of research on line I finally felt comfortable in my decision. I started the liquid diet on May 6th at 262 lbs. I went in to surgery on May 20th at 253 and as of May 23 I was 249. In all honesty, I think the hardest part for me has been not being able to pick up my son. When I came home from the hospital he was sick with a high fever and I could do nothing for him. It really got to me. As of today I am feeling a little better but still very sore and getting around slowly. Sleeping has been a challenge since I am a side sleeper and that is not comfortable to do at this point. I hope that goes away soon. I guess that's all for now. I am looking forward to a new healthier life and lots and lots of fun with my son!

    Excited and Scared

Hang in there. Instead of always having a small meal a day maybe you can just have a thinned soup. Maybe all you really want is a full tummy. In that case mix a can of bestlife recommended Progresso soup with a can of broth and eat that. You'll get full, get nutrients, but won't get alot of calories. Also, up your water intake, it will help to flush your system and help you to lose water weight quicker. Good luck to you. I hope you make your goal of 26 lbs this month. I know its alot, but you can do it. As for Kelsey, be careful gaining weight. I went to three consultations before deciding and all had the same rule, no surgery if you gain 20lbs or more between consultation and surgery date.

    Excited and Scared

Well April 25th is fastly approaching and i am both excited and scared, excited to start a new chapter in my life but scared of the actual surgery. I have only been put under anesthesia once in my life when i was about 4 years old to get my tonsils out and i don't even remember it. I am required to have a 1 month medifast diet before my surgery and i am currently in week 2 of that and its KILLLLING me i have slightly cheated but nothing like in the past and i have lost a total of 11lbs which feels so good! When i went to my doctors appt on Wednesday(at that point i had lost 7lbs) to get weighed in the nurse told me it was not enough and i needed to do better i was in TOTAL shock i mean come on i have never lost that much weight in a week and i was soo proud of myself and she just bashed me down. She them stated i needed to kick it in gear so they don't reschedule my surgery, i told my friends who have had weight loss surgery this and they both said she was crazy and that i was doing a great job. The doctor gave me one month to loose 26lbs on medifast which is possible if you have ONLY shakes for 4 weeks but i get extremely sick on the shakes if i just eat those so i substitutes 3 shakes for 1 meal a day (a VERY low cal meal). I guess i am just tired of doing this and this waiting game i want my surgery and i want it now hahahaha even though i am scared i know i have my angel with me (my grandfather) who will protect me! Thanks for listening and comments are more than welcome:smile: Kayla
  6. 2 weeks ago i went for my first fill and the new dr; bc my original dr opened his own thing and my insurance wont cover me to move or something) i saw didnt do fills till 6 weeks and they scheduled for 4( theres another post about that) so long story short i obviously didnt get it. Then today was my second attempt to get my first fill again... well the dr put the needle in and fished around for a few mins and couldnt get to the port bc it is too deep? So now i have to go to the hospital to do an xray fill. Well first off they have to get an approval from my insurance THEN schedule the appointment. Thats going to be at least another week! I have gained 3lbs since i have been on reg foods. The hospital is like 45 miles away! I know its not the dr fault this time but wouldnt you think they should have longer needles if, as he said "it happens more then often", instead of having to send me or other ppl to the hospital?? Im not happy at all!!

But I have a couple quick questions I am having my seminar at Brigham and Women's Hospital and was wondering if anyone has there surgery there and what there experience/ suggestions for surgeon at the Brigham. 9. I don't start my cycle until another week and a few days as I'm on birth control pills, but I think the Water weight is already starting to creep up. I lost a few pounds last week, but nothing this week, and today the scale said a one pound GAIN! GRRRRRR........And, to make matters worse, I have my six week doctor visit next Thursday when I will most likely be at the peak of my water gain. I hate the vicious cycle. Do others typically see a slow down or gain a week or so before their cycle?

    Walking/exercise advise

I was encouraged to start walking while still in the hospital also. You will still be healing for some time, so listen to your body and don't over do things. Walking will help jump start the weight loss and aide the healing. Best of luck in your journey.
  11. I've had a much better day today and it has been wonderful not to feel sick all day! The surgeon told me that the nausea will come on and off for a while. That sucked to hear. However, I am feeling better for now and starting to get excited about losing the weight. I am not at all hungry but I still am sitting here thinking about food I wish I could eat. I am sure my missing food will last a good long while. I want to thank all you guys on here that have supported me. I think a lot of the reason I was less sick today was that I didn't try to force myself to drink a protein shake. I'm just not ready for all that. You guys let me know it was ok to not be able to eat for a while and I'm grateful for the help! When the doc called to check on me today I told him I wasn't eating much at all and he didn't seem a bit concerned so it looks like you all were right! Thank you

    Help, heartburn

Does anyone have heartburn? I used to get it frequently and badly before my surgery, but it stopped after I lost weight. Now it is back and really bothering me. Tums, etc does not help. It is a burning throat/chest sensation and not connected to eating or drinking. Help!

    Hair loss

Hi! I was sleeved on April 19th! Congrats on your 57lb loss! I am only at 44 so that's great! As far as the hair loss have you started losing hair? I too do the 10,000 mcg of biotin and knock on wood haven't lost any as of yet. I have heard that the slower u lose the weight the better of a shot you have to not lose much. My hair is thin to begin with so I was really worried. Hoping things stay the same where this is concerned!
  14. I too had the sleep study and yes..had to get a CPAP. I knew what was in store because My hubs has to use one. As I have lost weight, I have not been using it and it too is collecting dust on the shelf. My husband tell me that I do not snore like I did before surgery. Let your doctor tell you what you need to do. It does take some getting used to however you will get used to it. If it helps, just from my experience, I used the mask that simply fits over your nose, not covering your whole face. It lets you feel less claustophrobic.
  15. I find I don't loose weight unless I eat low-carb, even if I just stick to "good carbs" my weight loss stalls. Also I have diebeties, another reason to restrict carbs. I was able to get off my blood sugar medication. I stick to high protien such as fish, chicken, eggs, eat non-starchy veggies, snack on nuts and cheese and have the occassional LC protien shake. I agree with what was said, everybodies body is different, find what works for you.
  16. I love the weight loss, but between the wrinkles on my face, the hanging skin and my boobs looking like what I image a 90 year old's boob would look like this is getting a little gross! I have lost a cup size and that does not make me happy! Hubby liked the fun bags! (he is banded also so he is very understanding even though no excess skin on him...urrrrrrrrrrrrrrr:angry:) How is everyone else doing with this! I have about 100 pounds to go so I can't even image how much worse this is going to get and I never realized how the excess weight kept my face unwrinkled... What are you all doing to fight back! One thing I realize is I now understand why people have plastic surgery... I figure I will need about 30K worth to make me happy when this is all done:thumbup: Chime in... I would love to hear all my sista's stories so I no I am not alone in this irony of losing weight feeling great and the flip side of what the hell is happening to my body!

    2 Months And Stalled Already?

I am 6 weeks post op today...I have been stuck between 229 & 227 for three weeks. Its so frustrating that I have stopped losing this soon out...and being self pay, it makes me feel horrible that I have spent so much money! I too, am trying to focus on the NSV's and I am loosing inches....although not a lot. I would love to hear if there are any folks out there who hit a long stall soon after surgery....but went on to make your goal weight.
  18. It just hit me today that I am no longer an emotional eater. Today, I learned that my sister and best friend in the world is going onto the heart transplant list--IF they consider her to be a good candidate for surviving it. She is beautiful--the picture of health and fitness--but chemo in her 20's destroyed her heart valves and she's been struggling with congestive heart failure. However, I realied this evening that for the first time in my life, I didn't even consider eating to ease my pain and worry. Amazing. What is different?? I got to my highest weight by eating every time I had an emotion, be it anger, sadness, or even excitement and happiness. I've worked on awareness of this for a few years now. When I would get upset about something, I would automatically walk to the pantry or fridge. But instead of just grabbing something, I would say, "If you eat this, you'll have two problems instead of one," and then I would force myself to just feel my feeling and walk away from the food. Last weekend my husband made me so mad, I got out my boxing exercise DVD at 1 a.m. and pictured his face every time I threw a punch! But tonight, I made the connection that even as mad as I was I didn't turn to food to feel better. I'm really thrilled about this. If I can stop eating for emotional reasons, I truly believe anyone can. It will take practice and a willingness to actually FEEL things rather than just drug yourself with food, but it can be done. Thanks for letting me share. Please pray for my sister. She's an amazing woman.

    Surgery Feb 4th... Dr Almanza

Good luck! I'm doing mine alone soon too. I can't say I have a goal either because I've been obese since I was a pre-teen and so I have NO CLUE what size/weight I'm going to feel comfortable at. I haven't found a clear protein that I actually like. But for powders my favorites are the Jarrow formulas because they are rsbt/hormone free, etc etc, and they are creamy and tasty especially if you have maybe a magic bullet to whip them up into a good frothy magical drink. I like the Plant Fusion vegan protein too, but it has a green taste to it that some people will hate. I hope you have a great experience!

  21. Hello all! 04/26/2012 will be my FIFTH bandversary. Yes, 5 years. I used to live on this site and for me it was vital to my success and accountability. I was tight with my group of "Violets" who were all 2007 bandsters..... I am still friends with most of them on facebook and such, but the need to come here and post is long gone. If you click on my profile you can see where I started and where I'm at today..........as I uploaded more pics to my progress album. I did awesome my first year and lost 98 lbs, and then I just quit watching what I ate and quite weighing every day....... I gained about 30 lbs, but then I just settled. I would get on the scale about once every 6 months and the scale would read the same 204-208. Failure? Hell NO! I was (and am) normal sized and comfortable in my size 12-14's. In 2012 I am refocusing on re-losing those same 30 lbs, because I loved the feeling of size 10 levis! and my narrow face, plus I ready. I love my band. I haven't had a fill (or unfill) in well over two years and have no plans for one in the future. I still eat too fast, but I will never again be able to eat 6 tacos or a large thin crust pizza! I can however eat two tacos and be completely stuffed!!!! I believe in eating Low Carb.. it has always helped me lose weight banded and pre-band. I am currently adhering to a LC lifestyle and I will come back and post a pic when I get back down to those size 10's in 2012! I was the first in my family to get banded........ My Brother in law got banded in Mexico 4 years ago My Mom by Dr, K 3 years ago My StepDad by Dr. K 1 year ago All of us have lost weight. My band has been a great tool and the ONLY way I've been able to maintain any ONE size in my entire life! Good Luck on YOUR band journey! Tracy Banded 04/26/2007 272/174/today206/goal for 2012... 172 and it is totally do-able!
  22. Thank you both Banded_for_life and Renebean for the warm welcome... Although Rene , I know if I don't then all of my problems I've got now will only worsen over time. Not to mention I am tired of bein' sluggish when I want to go out there and play softball or volleyball then realize I really can't because of my back goin' numb and my knees bucklin' on me.. Also if I ever plan to have kids in the feature then I've got to find my energy somewhere as well as get my PCOS under control...I'm just in really high hopes that my husbands insurance won't give me a fight but as far as my DR said in a past conversation with all of my health issues right now that can be better with a significant weight loss then she doesn't forsee it a problem gettin' the procedure done. So we'll cross fingers and I'll keep readin' up on things as my husband and I are waiting until the beginning of the year to have this done so my xmas dinner this year will be the last time I'll be able to "indulge" myself 'cuz I'm sure we all know what MY new years resolution will be .. lol
  23. I did not have to go on any pre-op diet. Which I got nervous about and wondered if i was supposed to and maybe I misunderstood. But nooope! My surgeon told me the same thing.. To just try to ween myself off the soda, coffee, etc. And most importantly, He told me do NOT gain any more weight or he will cancel the surgery. I did not put myself on a strict diet... However I did stop drinking soda, coffee, eating junk food..etc. And i didn't gain any weight! I actually lost a few more pounds prior to surgery. And nope, No shaving.. I don't see why they would have to. I was on my period and had a damn catheter in... ugh! I woke up with it, Didn't even know I had one or was getting one for that matter.

    Family support

You just made cry. You can never be terrible when are trying to take control of your health. So get that right out of your head! I've only told my immediate family and there are range of emotions and opinions I get from them. Mostly it's worry and concern of the unknown. So I gauged each persons reaction and for those who seem interested in knowing what's it all about; I shared the high lights of my 3 years of research, and they get it. With my husband and daughter I've educating them every step of way and they are optimistic but at the same time they keep the risks involved in the back of their minds. I never asked, but mom and my sis offered to come to lighten my household load and help me focus 100% on recovery(which doesn't include lying on my butt all day...lol). I do however have another sister and brother in law who don't support me and just yesterday they noticed i lost some weight, i explained it was do to the pre op diet and their like "you see you can do it by yourself just keep doing what your doing". I'm like "are you kidding me I am practically starving myself and if I don't keep myself distracted I could eat one of my own arms off". Lol, then I said "besides you guys know every time I get on a diet I always cheat". My brother in law straight flat out said "by doing that sleeve thing you are cheating". At that point I just walked away and said sarcastically "ok thank you for your support". He later apologized. So do what you must to get healthy just prepare for some not to be on board. Good luck and good health to you.
  25. Don't fret about losing slow...seriously...your sleeve is going to work...remember your body has been thru a major surgery and we all recover in our own time...just stick to what you are doing and believe me in time people will notice your weight loss. This is an awesome tool for a healthier life. Hang in there! It is sooo worth it!!
