  1. Yikes! Why would anyone do this voluntarily? Remember the goal of the pre-op liquid diet isn't to lose weight but to shrink your liver. It's not a particularly healthy diet in terms of long-term nutrition, and it's hard enough to manage the two weeks when you know surgery is coming up, I would never have done it otherwise.

Not at all! I hope we all do amazing. I have two weeks until I fly to San Antonio. It's getting a bit real at this point.

    August surgery buddies!

Yes, just a day apart. I'm nervous about the two week liquid diet 😬
  5. I did not do any trial runs, but I can say I had to do it. I had my gallbladder removed in April of 2019 in what was my very first ever surgery/hospital visit (not including ERs or urgent cares). I had to do 10 days of the pre-op for the exact same reason as the bariatric surgery - to shrink the liver. Day 3 I remember being the worst part of it all. Day 1 & 2 you're thinking "I can do this, it ain't so bad." Then day 3 comes and you want to die. And then after that, you're just resigned to being miserable for whatever days you have left. 😂 I could only have 3 shakes a day for that one. For this diet I get 4 shakes a day, so I am hoping that it will fulfil hunger better this go around. It's hard, but it's not impossible by any means when you keep yourself in the mindset that you are doing this for YOUR health, and that if you cheat or mess up it's YOU who has to suffer with whatever complications could arise (including having to forego laparoscopic surgery and be cut open). It definitely helped to keep myself on the wagon.
  6. At my recent doctor appointment on Tuesday 6/7 I was diagnosed with gastritis. It can happen after a gastric bypass. I explained that my stomach ALWAYS hurt and was progressing to be felt in breastbone/rib. It was a gnawing pain that affected eating and may explain my aversion to food other than soup and liquid. It was a completely new pain or feeling-it woke me up at night. Often I dismissed it as gas or hunger pain. But as it progressed it was AWFUL. I took my first dose of Omeprazole yesterday and I felt better. This medicine is over the counter Prilosec but STRONGER…over counter is 20mg I’m taking 40mg. It isn’t too common but a result of some patients. My doctor explained that the new hookup procedure isn’t natural. This DOESN’T happen to everyone only a few (lucky me). My stomach was bypassed and a pouch was made by hooking into intestines-my new stomach lining is mad at me. I have never ever had to use Prilosec in my life-never had acid reflux -stomach issues-or heartburn….it’s a new one for me 🙄. I go back to the doctor in two weeks. He told me I may need to take this forever but I hope I get a break in between omeprazole treatments. My concern is if I am dependent on this medication- it will deplete my Vitamin D reserves. I am happy I may know why I am uncomfortable. I can’t wait to eat normally. I’m still happy with my weight loss and looking forward to forgoing high blood pressure and high cholesterol…..and prevent diabetes!

    New York State Fidelis/ Medicaid

I’m just posting this for posterity because I couldn’t find any relevant or recent information on my insurance NYS Fidelis/ Medicaid. It would’ve been nice to have a first hand point of reference. To start, the entire process has been a breeze. From the beginning: - They do not require a referral from your primary care but you will need a letter of support towards the end of your program. Meaning, you WILL need a primary care doctor that can get you in to do a pre-op assessment etc, towards the end of your program (that may just be my doctors requirements though.) - They require 3 bariatric doctor visits, 2 visits with a dietician, 1 visit with a bariatric psychologist. Making it a 3 month process. Availability with your bariatric center will dictate the timeframe depending on if they are backed up or not. But Fidelis ONLY requires those visits spread across 3 months. - Finally once you complete those requirements your doc will submit to Fidelis for approval. I know timeframes may vary but my doctor submitted my paperwork on May 31st. Fidelis received it the same day and replied by 1am on June 1st (less then 24hrs) stating they needed the clinical chart notes and proving I met all my program requirements etc. My doctor submitted the necessary information and I received my approval this morning June 8th, again at 1am. Of course this timeline also depends on how on top of things your bariatric office is. Mine is very proactive but they were a little backed up because of Covid so the process took 5 months instead of 3. But as far as Fidelis goes they are very responsive and quick to reply. I have had a great experience thus far and am looking forward to my surgery July 6th! Any questions feel free to ask now or in the future!

    Over eating

I didnt feel my real restriction until 4 months out. In the early stages, when I was full I got a runny nose. A month later I got hiccups. At 6 month plus, I have to guess because I dont feel my restriction for about an hour later. If I have eaten too much I pay for it for about 3 hours. About once a week I get really hungry and seem to be eating all day but then I eat very little the day after. I average about 700 to 800 cals a day.

    May 2022 surgery?

Oh yeah. Same place here. Surgery on the 24th. Actually gained half a pound right at the beginning of week 3. Not worried, supposed to be normal water gain as the body restores glycogen that it burnt through when we started very-low-calorie living. I started pureed yesterday. Lunch was tuna salad. It set well. Dinner, I pureed the taco meat, cheese, salsa and sour cream from the family's dinner. That didn't do so well. Didn't like the texture and it felt like a rock in my gut. All we can do is one day at a time. Keep on.
  10. I know this is a common one but im particularly excited about it because I distinctly remember being 340 lbs and watching these "progress" videos of other women with towels wrapped around their body, showing how they gradually start fitting into bath towels as they lose weight and I remember feeling so sad and discouraged...like I didn't have it in me to get there too. I'm traveling and in a hotel right now and to my surprise this is the first time a regular "hotel" towel has wrapped all the way around my body without a humongous gap exposing my side and stomach. I am so happy about this I can't even explain it. It just confirms it for me that I can have the things I want, that I deserve them too and am just as strong to fight for them. Photo: the first picture is from just a week preop, the second is from today. Yes...I had to censor my booty cheek lol that whole blue part is the towel that didn't close and that towel is bigger than this one I have here. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  11. I’m so torn right now. I meet with my surgeon next week to discuss things but thought I’d. one here first… should I go with the sleeve or the bypass?? I was set on sleeve but now I’m having second thoughts… I feel like my eating habits/cravings/pcos will just find a way around sleeve and bypass is going to make that more difficult. BUT bypass is more expensive, and I’m self pay. What would you guys suggest!? SN- I have NO issues with gerd or reflux.
  12. I'm scheduled for July7. I'm not required to start pre op diet until 2 weeks prior which will be low carb very low cal. I started on my own yesterday with low carb moderate calorie to get a jump on it. Would love to get the first 20 pounds behind me before surgery day.

    Over eating

I've been weighing everything that doesn't come prepackaged with a label. I do get restrictions but not today. So I usually know when to stop. Or I get the hiccups 🤷🏼‍♀️ I've been sticking to my plan except for today and some yesterday. I haven't lost much but I am losing inches. Oh im 6 weeks post op

    Over eating

I found myself eating more than I should yesterday and part of today. I was only able to eat 1/3 of a burger patty, and then I felt very comfortable and I knew to stop. Well yesterday NOTHING I ate had me feeling comfortable. I'm not talking restriction, I mean comfortable and just not hungry anymore. I'm 5 weeks post op and have started eating actual food (slowly since I'm a week early on it) and I haven't felt that feeling of restriction or feeling comfortable like I read about. I thought starting solids would make it easier to learn my limits. Who knew I'd end up never feeling any restriction or feel comfortable when eating actual food (no, it's not slider foods. It's burgers, chicken, pork chops, veggies, etc...) I think we have to just power through it, reset ourselves, and recommit to the bariatric and diet and just stick to it. I bought a food scale so I'm starting to weigh everything and hoping I can just get used to the amount of food and hopefully teach my stomach it's not starving and maybe the hunger will stop.

June surgeries? Tell me your preparations

Teri weeks of high protein low carb diet with 64oz fluids. I cut out soda and am anxious to fly out and have surgery Tuesday.

    Gerd Meds

I was prescribed that for a year after surgery (that was seven years ago, though, before the new-ish research came out on PPI's. Now they usually prescribe it for 3-6 months). So yes - that should be fine. I didn't have to break mine open though (cant' remember if I had capsules or tablets, but I never crushed or open them)

    May 2022 Surgeries

I had sleeve surgery on May 23. I have had little complications. Still in the liquid phase of the diet. I honestly can’t believe how much weight I have lost already. I try and walk every 2-3 hours. That has helped my pain.
  18. Well my surgery went well, took 3 hours due to severe scar tissue from a gall bladder surgery in 1992. I have to say that gastric sleeve surgery was much less painful than my C-section or my gall bladder surgery. Had me up walking in recovery about an hour after surgery. Then walked 1 more time after I was taken to my room. Walked 2 more times at hospital before I was released to come home. Was given a small hospital pitcher of ice chips last night. Then was given another one this morning. Was given 1oz of plain Greek yogurt for breakfast and 1oz of tomato soup for lunch. So definitely alot different than I thought food the 1st day after surgery would be. So far so good! Sent from my SM-G981V using BariatricPal mobile app
  19. I am 3 weeks out and have lost 40 pounds so far. I can’t even believe how fast the weight is coming off.

    Caffeine/ coffee

I just added caffiene-3 weeks out from surgery. I mixed black iced coffee with a 1/2 of a vanilla Premier Protein shake and it was delicious. Felt like an iced latte.
  21. Hi all. My surgery was on May 16th, the 1st week was going okay, no vomiting no pain, just a lot of gas that would only come out as a belch. I was having bowel movements so the Dr said to give it more time. By Monday May 30 I was back in the hospital. I was vomiting, couldn't keep anything other than liquids down. Turns out part of my intestines was pinched shut. A full week here in the hospital, but finally feeling better after a second surgery to correct the blockage. All the posts I see people are doing great after surgery with no problems. Anyone else here have any complications?

    Trying to decide

To answer a few of your questions, no one answer fits everybody as @Arabesque say. Will your hair fall out ?? who knows, Has mine? OMG yes but I can feel the new hair sprouting. Will you wrinkle ?? who knows, Have I ? OMG yes but I was a very overweight soon to be 63 years old. Do I care ? nope because I wear pants and 3/4 sleeve tops that hide it all. My face is fine yet. I might have plastics in a few years if it bothers me then. I am saving just in case. I only told my friend of 57 years, my husband and my son. I don't want judgement or other peoples opinion, its irrelevant. I was a weekend drinker in my early years but I like to be fairly sober these days as it messes with my medication. I have had a few drinks since surgery, I am quite partial to a Bloody Mary. I can probably count the drinks I have had in 6 months on one hand. I get a buzz off one. Will I become alcoholic ? No thanks Keep doing your research, keep asking questions because in the end you are the only one who knows if its for you

    May 2022 surgery?

I have read a lot of stalls between weeks 2 and 4. I watched a video that talked about the three week stall. The doctor explained at first we are losing a lot of water weight. Then as we get fluids we gain fluid but is losing pounds. So it does not show we really are losing. If you do measurements you can see that you lost inches during this time. If you will google the 3 week stall with weight loss surgery or sleeve .... you can fine a lot of videos from different doctors. I am in a stall going on 10 days. I have heard people talking about long stalls but started losing faster. If your exercising you might gain muscle but losing fat. I belong to several gastic sleeve support groups ob face book and learned alot.

i was on solids 2 weeks after surgery but all surgeons are different but typically fried foods are a no go now. Try grilled chicken next time and small amounts.
