  1. PLEASE EXCUSE THE LONG POST :( Hi all. I had my first VSG consultation on 4/19/2018. My surgeon told me I would need to lose 100lbs during my pre-op stage (6 months required by insurance co) and prescribed phentermine. I lost 20lbs in 2 weeks but it gave me terrible side effects (depression, suicidal thoughts, insomnia) so I quit. At that point I was faced with calling my surgeon and asking for something else and I never did it. The week following that I tried intermittent fasting and lost another 10lbs. Then, foolishly, I thought to myself just as I had a million times before, “I can do this myself!” And when it came time for my next appointment, I didn’t go. I didn’t call and cancel, I didn’t reschedule, I just. didn’t. go. I was struggling very hard with the idea of ever telling my family. My sister Kayla lost all her weight through diet and exercise and has kept most of it off for years and years and would NEVER support the idea of me have surgery. She has my dad’s ear and he would listen to whatever opinion she had about it. I live with my dad and he’d always thought if I would just exercise more and eat less the weight would fall off. I hate myself for not going to that appointment. If I had persevered, I’d be sleeved by now and well on my way to my new life but instead I gave up. The fad diet again proved unsuccessful and I put all the weight back on and then some. I’ve been lost these past nine months trying to figure out what to do and then last week Kayla was home visiting and she handed me a stack of papers. She had gone to a WLS seminar, my skinny sister, and taken pages upon pages of notes. She had done research. She had prepared a speech to tell me it’s time for me to do something about this. Y’all, I CRIED. So now, tomorrow, I’m scheduling another consultation and I’m DOING THIS. I FINALLY have my family’s full support and most of all I’m ready. I’m ready to stop making excuses. I’m ready to stop saying no to going to certain restaurants because I can’t fit in their booths. I’m ready to stop telling my friends that the reason I can’t go to the amusement park is because I get sick on rollercoasters when the reality is that I don’t fit. I’m ready to stop saying no to vacations that require flight. I’m ready to stop researching weight limits on everything I buy. I’m ready to have a LIFE. I have never known what’s it’s like to be a normal weight. Not ever. I’m not delusional, I KNOW this will be one of the hardest things I’ll ever do but it will be so worth the struggle. I’m looking forward to sharing this journey.

8 days post op cheater :/

I think you really have to ask yourself if you are in this for the long haul? If you can cheat within the first month or so is this going to end up as another failed weight loss attempt? For me I know I have to push the boundries. I have decided that I have to listen and trust what I am told as apparently I haven't succeed do my own. I have pushed every rule that was put in front of me from every weight loss program I have ever tried. And guess what? I have never succeeded! What a surprise. I plan on following the rules, do as I'm told because I have never lost and maintained a healthy weight. I'm putting my faith in the pros now....
  4. Nice mine was June 12 loving my sleeve too my weight in was 350 June 12 and today at my folow Dr appointment was 328
  5. Keep up the good work, Lee! You will have some wonderful results! (and I'm talking more than just weight loss & increased health---you are making memories with your kids!):clap2:
  6. jgandg, This is the toughest time to be a bandster. You've just had major surgery and you feel like you deserve to be losing a ton of weight, but you just plain don't have any help until you get your fills. This time is for healing. Please don't forget that. If you can stick to a low calorie diet, you will lose and that will be great, but if you can't, just be sure to stick to the consistency of foods your doctor requires during this period and worry about losing lbs later when you have a fill. If it makes you feel any better, I didn't lose ANY weight during the 3-6 week post-op period (once I left liquids and before I got a fill). That said, I'm just shy of 6 months post-op and just shy of 100 lbs down. I tell you that because you shouldn't worry. This IS going to work, you just need to pass the next few weeks and then be diligent about getting to a proper restriction level. Best of luck!
  7. Yes!! Are you the guy sitting next to me that likes venison? I was so glad we had other bandsters there last night. Ususally it's just me. I find the group very helpful. Sometimes it is hard to watch the bypass people shrink so rapidly. My brother just had surgery 4 months ago and has dropped all his weight. I just refuse to go there...I have to use the tools I have. Keep comming back! Victoria
  8. Thank you guys so much for being so supportive I plan to appeal it just sucks having to wait for something I've been working on what seems like forever although I know there are people out there that have been fighting the insurance company for alot longer I'm looking into leg weights to get my BMI back up to atleast 40 it sucks that I tried so hard to get my weight down and I'm now trying to get it up so I can get some help to get it down AND STAY OFF lol oh well Thanks so much for your support Hopefully I'll get my date soon!!!
  9. I called BC/BS Alliance Select and was told that I was denied because my BMI wasn't High Enough I've yo-yoed between 37-40 for the past two years and that my co-morbidities aren't enough I have gerd, asthma, migraines, joint pain and depression. Geez I don't know if that is enough i mean my weight basically dictates what I can do in my life. This is so messed up. I'm of course appealling and resubmitting my Insurance lady at the surgeons office is out until Monday so I called and left a message that says I needed to talk to her called my PCP and asked him to write a letter of medical necessity and to please list all the stuff I've tried and failed at, all my co-morbities and how this is going to help me be healthier yadda yadda yadda. Am I missing anything that I should be doing? I'm a college student so self-pay is out of the question. I really think I need this surgery I wouldn't have worked towards this for over a year if it was just gonna be a quick fix I'm ready to start a healthier life for myself why can't my insurance company help me out How much money would they save if I didn't have to go to the doctor as often or get Rx's all the time....:tt2:

    What I enjoy most

From the album: Life Before WLS

Horses are my true passion. This was 10/22/18, the same day as my first WLS appointment. After surgery and weight loss, I intend to ride this girl in 25-50 mile endurance races. A dream of mine!

  11. After feeling like I was basically lower than dirt on the bottom of a shoe for regaining all of the weight I lost with the band after it was removed. (Thanks so a not very sympathetic doctor). And then having to change insurance companies in the middle of the process and thus change doctors. I finally got to see a new surgeon yesterday. Dr. Jossart and his entire staff were absolutely great!! So positive and helpful with everything. Never made me feel like the band failure was my fault and made it sound like getting my sleeve is a real possiblilty! They also coordinated everything so yesterday, I was able to get my upper GI, meet with the surgeon, meet with the NUT and the Psych...all in one day!!! So now I guess it's up to my new insurance. Fingers crossed and lots of prayers that I can sail thru insurance and get this scheduled. I can't wait!!!
  12. Banded in 2009; Unbanded 2012 (due to erosion) Lived life 2012-2019 struggling with weight gain and massive depression The decision to have Gastric Sleeve made Oct. 17th, 2019 Contacted my doc for initial consultation (Oct 30th) Self Pay This time...I tell nobody but my CORE family....I can't deal with the stupidity of people who don't understand this life! Here we go....finally getting back to ME Created a new blog to journal ALL of my thoughts and progresses www.SabrinaGoddess.com
  13. I'm doing two amazing things at the same time, thanks to the miracle of modern medicine: I am losing weight (thanks to the band) and I am on day 5 without a cigarette (thanks to Chantix). Smokers fear gaining tons of weight when they quit...not enough of a reason to keep smoking, but I am so happy to say that thanks to my band my weight is easier to control and thanks to chantix I'm not going ape shyt crazy or eating everything in sight. I'm a loser and a quitter and I've never felt so proud of myself.
  14. If you drastically cut carbs when you have been consuming a lot you can go into such severe withdrawal that the symptoms are flu like. There is some great reading out there about why we are not biologically designed to consume the processed food that made us heavy in the first place - and makes billions of dollars for the food industry. This is a great book~ http://www.theendofovereatingbook.com/ I cut everything prior to surgery - I quit a 28 year old, 2 pack a day smoking habit which was utter agony - I will NEVER go through that again, which is why I will never take another puff. I cut out sugar, all white carbs that are processed (bread, rice, flour, sugar etc.) Cut out coffee - because I am addicted - did the same thing with soda. I have tried everything known to man to lose weight - only to lose and regain it all - this time I was not going to f*** around That is why I needed to ditch it. There is a reason it is so hard to cut the carbs - we become addicted to them and they light up our dopamine centers like a christmas tree - its like putting a needle in your arm. I baked a birthday cake for my 16 year old's sweet 16 two weeks ago - and I am still recovering from the tailspin that suddenly upping the carbs does to you, everyone in my family is suddenly voraciously hungry, craving bread, pizza, candy, etc, and is cranky and tired. A couple of slices of cake over a week and a bag of croutons for the salad and this is what it has done to us when we do not keep this kind of stuff in the house. I've read on another forum one woman who has lost all of her weight and is in maintenance was struggling with carb cravings after having a single bag of 100 calorie snack bags - it is so not worth it - because once you stop eating them, you stop craving them. The birthday week set my husband up for a stall that has not broken - perhaps it is just time for us to both have one, we have lost steadily since our surgeries in may. Now that I have the first 100 lb loss under my belt and begin the next phase I am fine tuning and planning to crank up the excersize and start to wean myself off of any artificial sweetners (hi Crystal Lite). Best of luck to you - no one ever said this was easy - though a lot of folks think that choosing this route is - it is anything but. It is also the best decision I have ever made for myself and my health.
  15. Here is where you weigh out the risks. I bet the risk of getting reactive hyperglycemia is a lot lower than the risk of weight related heart issues, diabetes, knee and back issues... etc etc etc. So, weigh out the risks and make the call. Personally, some ultra rare issue that almost no one experiences... isn't enough of a risk to outweigh all the things that WILL happen if one continues to be overweight.
  16. Also the nutritionists at my surgeons office tell us that there are no essential carbs - basically we do not need to consume them at all. Ketones produced from the burning of fat is the body's ideal and preferred fuel - and that is what shrinks the liver and is the mechanism that creates weight loss for us during this losing period. Of course there are many Vitamins and minerals we do not consume if we are not eating fruits and veggies - we are getting a good amount from supplementation though.
  17. I got a really good deal on 3 cans of it. 2 chocolate and 1 vanilla. They have 15 grams of Protein and 5 grams of Fiber per serving. I thought maybe with the fiber in it it would keep me full longer. Well I haven't tried the vanilla yet but I have opened the chocolate. It's not good. It's very bland and doesn't really taste like chocolate. I have to add coffee to it or cocoa powder and splenda just so I can drink it. Then when you get to the bottom the last few drinks are super, super gritty, like your drinking sand. I'm assuming that's the fiber in it and it just settles to the bottom rather than mixing into it. This is something I definitely will not buy again. Just thought I'd post my review in case any of you are interested:)

Help me bama banders with preop diet

Don't worry, the 2 week diet will do wonders for your liver. It is not unusual to gain weight during the approval process (I gained 15lbs). Just do what your doctor says and keep coming back here for support, as well as, a good local support group. Congratulations! Looks like you will have the luck of the Irish on your side. =) Shawna
  19. Hi y'all.. .guess what??... I can log on here and finally post what I have been been reading from other for a year now..I HAVE A SURGERY DATE!!!!!! YEAH!!!!! March 17- St. Patrick's Day!!! I wish y'all could see the smile on my face as I am typing this- But, with that comes this great shadow of doom- the preop liver shrinking diet. I understand I need to drink liquids and eat one low fat meal a day such as grilled chicken and a salad. Will this work? I haven't been on the scales but I fear I've gained about 20 pounds over the last 9 months waiting to get my dr visits and preapproval done. Do you think I will be put on hold for the weight gain? And again, should I be able to do my liver anygood with a 2 week liquid diet? I feel like a fool.. help!
  20. Hi everyone, I'm not sure how to post just yet...i'm very new. I'm in the planning and decision making stage and am curious what the level of actual dieting is involved with the lap band surgery. I'm motivated, but I've had so many successes followed by so many failures - meaning, gaining all the weight back, that I'm scared I'll get this surgery and it won't work. How did all of you prepare for surgery and keep weight off?
  21. Hi flipper, LBS is not going to fix your emotional eating or mindless eating for you. To quote another, the band goes around your stomach not your head. That said, LBS does help you to stay in control of the portion size that you consume to a degree, though that is not the true goal of LBS. It will help with the feelings of uncontrolled hunger, and offer a feeling of fullness faster then you might have them now. The band is a tool that you must master. Just like a carpenter or a plumber can call themselves that from day one, but to be a true master of their craft they must master all the tools that they employee in their service. You can be banded and never truly master your band. If you want to be successful and lose and keep that weight off for good then you must make that commitment to mastering the use of this tool. It is not an impossible feat, there is a pre-op and post-op diet that require strict adherence. They consist of mainly liquid diets, and soft mushy foods building up to a regular diet of Protein and vegetables. Take some time and research what the band is all about and see if you are able to make the full commitment that is required of patients under going this surgery. Best of luck to you on your journey.

    Silly maybe...

Congratulations on your incredible weight loss, and happy surgiversary! Why don't you mention it to your family and close friends? I agree with @@AngelaWilliamsMD that it is probably not on their radar. I would bet they will be very happy for you and will give you accolades for your hard work.
  23. Hi, Have you had the sleeve done.. were you on meds at the time? did you lose the weight with the sleeve?

    pregnancy and lap band

Hello. I had lap band surgery about 2 years ago. Tuesday I found out that I am pregnant. I am kinda worried about my diet related to my band and my baby. I feel very selfish because I DONT want to gain my weight back. I know some weight gain is normal and necessary but I have had 3 children and I have gained 50-60# with each one. I have only .75cc in my band I think that I would be ok but I dont know. Anyone out there that has been pregnant with their band??? What did you do??

    Band Fills

Yes, you have swelling and sometimes it takes more than a week. or at least it did for me, been without a fill for month with nothing in my band cuz i couldn't eat or drink for a month. But, your sweet spot (well mine is) when i can't eat or drink well i can barley get ice chips and water down, that is when i lost a ton of weight, i went a year like that not eating anything but some soup and water got down to 130 too.
