Severe unexpected pain, vomiting, 5 1/2 mos out
JeanZ_RN replied to NMJG's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Glad to hear you're feeling somewhat better. Silver lining, if the increased restriction remains after you recover, ... it might lead to weight loss being faster, as it was [for most of us] the first month or so after surgery ? -
Great to hear from you ! Tomorrow night I am going to the Tufts Med Cntr for their intro program and I have 2 more scheduled also. I would prefer the Brigham...but I need a referral after all is said and done. Where did you have your procedure done? I am 240 lbs..the most I have ever been in my life. The more weight I try to lose, the more weight I gain. I can overeat on a head of lettuce! The lowest weight I can remember is 156 and I was a pre teen. 2 Years ago I had breast reduction because of the back pain and ..yep...they grew back because of weight gain! Hello back pain. Last evening I watched You Tube Lap Band procedures and was shocked at all the fat inside our bodies!!!!(I don't think I can clean a Perdue roaster out for a long while after those videos LOL.) This morning I woke up asking myself if I am willing to go to any lengths..even the Lap Band surgery...the answer was a resounding 'YES'. You appear to have a positive experience with the LB..and I like that. You are losing and more importantly ,you are feeling well as you reach toward your goal. Congrats on the 200 mark. Keep up the good work. You are an inspiration.

Hi Everyone!! I am new to this site but not to the Sleeve surgery community. I had my surgery in November of 2015. When I started the journey I weight in at 320 lbs. Since that time I am down to 165 lbs and feel so great. I want to pay it forward and have even created a blog: throwingscales.net as a place to connect with others. Would love to chat and get to know people!! My before and after photos are below. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Frustrating Pre-Op PCP Visit
Maribelle76 replied to FLPhoenix's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Those meds do initially usually have pretty good weight loss, but from my own experience and the experience of others I've followed on a forum, the effectiveness usually diminished between 2 to 3 months. It wasn't working for me after the third month, and I had terrible side effects like really bad gas. -
As long as you follow your surgeons plan it will work. But it will take some time for your brain to catch up to the weight loss. I still go into the plus size section looking for clothes, forgetting that I can now wear regular sizes.. even JUNIORS!!! So it will happen. Just believe in yourself and how much you want this and you'll do great!

I think all of us have struggled in many ways, I think it's safe to say that, we are tired of trying diets that don't work, we lose 20 pounds and gain 40 back. Ultimately this surgery would end all the struggles. If we use this tool right we can finally put the over weight person behind us. Our new journey, our new life begins. It's worth it, if we work it.

Hunger and no fill yet
Kerry 5570 replied to janeykins1's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was banded in September and seven weeks post op and fight with my hunger everyday. I am going for my third fill tonight and can't wait. I need to be able to control my portion sizes. I have most definitely changed my way of eating but can still eat a normal portion (all be it slower) with ease. I was starting to think that the band wasn't working for me and couldn't believe that after waiting for weight loss it wasn't happening. I feel guilty when I go back for my fills and I haven't lost anything since the last one. I lost 14lbs in my first week post op and then only two pounds since. I keep asking myself what am I doing wrong lol. I know this is a process until you get to the point where the fills are working for you but how frustrating it is waiting lol. Anyway hopefully tonight the fill will plug me up finally lol Love this site because it helps me to keep positive. It has to work one day -
I have high cholesterol. My goal weight is 145lbs. I am at 199 now. My doctor said it would be the right surgery for me. I would have great results. I am a nurse and teach about good health with my patients but I'm not healthy myself. I have tried diets but never do well. I eat mostly healthy but binge when I'm hormonal. I need restriction.

Lap Band vs. Gastric Bypass/Sleeve Gastrectomy
Lisa1967 replied to Sabrina140's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The reason I made my choice was because I wanted the least invasive procedure as possible. I am happy with my decision. The band is reversible and the sleeve isn't. If you are not careful the sleeve can expand and you will be back at square one. At least with the band I know I can add restriction if needed.. I have known plenty of people who had the sleeve procedure and they have been really ill the first few months. In fact I know one who had to go back and get the roux-n-y done. I also was looking for a slower weight loss. They have to chew their food even more than band patients. I was looking for a slower weight loss. You can also return to work sooner as long as you have one of those jobs that doesn't require you to be really active. I'm not trying to scare you at all, in the end it is your choice. These are the reasons why I picked the band. -

Need Some Goal Weight Advice
James Marusek replied to Myaiku_Kuraitani's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Goal weight is an artificial number. I think my surgeon told me that I could reach 190 pounds. I was happy with that. But in the end I dropped almost down to 140. As far as a goal, I would shoot for the high side of normal BMI. Normal BMI 18.5-24.9. So for your height of 5 foot 2 inch that would correspond to a goal weight of around 135 pounds. The reason why I would select that as a goal is because individuals on the high side of normal live the longest. It is important to keep a little fat in your body because when you have a very, very serious illness or accident, you need that reservoir of fat to keep you alive until your body recovers. It is O.K. to drop below that level for a little while to compensate for a small amount of weight gain as you progress in Maintenance phase. -
From the album: Untitled Album
My convention photo with Kevin Sorbo in July 2010... I added this because I rarely take Full body picks and though I've gained about 10 pounds I look roughly the same -
they had to be significant. i have arthritis and that wasn't even a consideration. my husband was banded w/me and he too was denied (under 40 bmi) with high blood pressure * sleep apnea. i would call your insurance company and get a copy of the policy as it pertains to weight loss surgery. in my opinion, if they can get away not paying for the surgery - they will.. btw - i had blue cross. we switched insurances at my husband's next open enrollment and now have UHC & they cover everything band related even though we went self pay.

anyone with anthem insurance?
papillon_mom replied to braydensmama's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
To "braydensmama", have you heard anything from your insurance yet? I also have Anthem BCBS. I do know that my insurance covers psych tests but the Dr. that is doing the test doesn't accept Anthem so I'm going to have to come up with $400 out of pocket but they did say that my insurance will reimburse me. Let me know how all this goes for you, it sounds like me and you are in the same spot in this process. To "Rina83" thank you for posting the site to Anthem, but to me requirement #2 is unclear. My surgeon is saying I have to do the 6 month diet because that's what most insurance companies require. Of course they haven't filed my claim yet so according to this I may not have the 6 month wait as long as my Dr. states that I have made weight loss attempts in the past? Am I reading this right? If I am right I wish the surgeon will go ahead and file the claim, it's been over a week since I've had the appointment with him. To think I have to wait for 6 months makes me even more depressed, as if being "morbidly obese" isnt' bad enough -
Ok, so going to vent a bit about my current situation, ive lost so far about 75 pounds since my surgery july 12th. Im looking a bit thinner, I feel good, have energy and im only going to lose more weight, im roughly 60 pounds away from being at my goal weight. Now that being said my partner is getting soooo jealous lately about anything I do outside my home/job, I mean if I go out with my friends, im apprantly going out to find someone else, now im not one to go looking for anyone else because im happy with what I have. Im not liking the new issues...does anyone else have this problem??? what can I do??

Re: Post-Op Eating
VSjrs replied to Kimba Maria Wiggins's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everyone's body is different. Stay away from carbs completely. The noodles probably got stuck in your stomach. Also chicken has fibers in it that break down in your stomach weird. Try tomato soup with u flavored protein powder, sugar free pudding, yogurt with less than 10 grams of sugar. Stay as far away as possible from carbs. They will make you sick and you won't loose as much weight. -
Hello All, My name is Asmaa, I am 40 years old, married, mother of 3 daughters, age 19, 12, and 10. I currently live in Philadelphia but am originally from DC/NoVA. I have been on my weight loss journey for 19 years, right after I had my first child. I was always pretty slim growing up and only picked up weight after having kids. Over the last 10 years my weight has skyrocketed and before I knew it I was 328 pounds. It wasn't until I saw myself in a family picture that I realized how big I had gotten. Along with they weight gain I suffer from high blood pressure and sleep apnea. I am being treated medically for the HBP and have to sleep with a C-PAP mask for the apnea I have lower back problems and I plantar fasciitis. I have been on every fad diet that anyone could mention, the weight drops but then it comes right back. I had considered weight loss surgery years ago but I felt that I was cheating and taking the easy way out. I felt that I could do i t on my own, and I did. I lost 80lbs by changing my eating habits and exercising. Then I injured my knee and had to have surgery. This slowed down my exercise routine and I returned to disordered eating and the weight came back. I exercise 3-5 times a week but it hasn't been enough. I needed a change and so I decided to look into weight loss surgery. After attending the information session, I felt confident that this option was right for me at this time in my life. The surgeons and staff are terrific. They are very kind and compassionate and care about each and every patient that they treat. And as the months have gone by in preparation for the surgery, I grow even more confident that this is the best choice in my journey. So with that being said...... My vertical sleeve surgery is scheduled for this coming Monday, October 14. I am so happy to be beginning my journey to weight loss and a more permanent healthy state. Well that's my intro, I look forward to getting to know everyone!

I feel like I've hit the lottery
OutsideMatchInside replied to Margie122's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yeah, I kind of feel like I have won the lottery also. I just feel so much better overall. All of it isn't related to weight loss. I made a lot of changes before I lost weight. I'm so happy and content in my life that I already feel like a billionaire, actually probably better than a billionaire because I have very little stress in my life. -
Banded June 4, doing well but...
MissK replied to amarsh's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi there I haven't been banded yet, but I only kept my plans a secret until I had made a final decision to proceed with the surgery. I had a discussion with a friend recently, who told me how jealous she will feel when I begin to lose weight.. and my stance on this topic is the same for her as it is for everyone else, and I have and will continue to make it abundantly clear: I have spent 27 years of my life feeling inadequate and apologising for the way that I am. I will not apologise for making the decision to have this surgery nor will I apologise for the results I obtain. Any results I do get will be from hard work, dedication and personal sacrifice, they will be well deserved. This is a huge decision which will require a lot of changes to my lifestyle, it is going to be a hard road at times so I only wish to be surrounded by positive people who will support my decision and be proud of me for my successes. Anyone who does not fit into that category, who will not support me, is someone who I no longer want to play a major role in my life. It's them who makes this choice through their own actions, not me. I say, the sooner you share the news with the people who matter and take a strong stance in relation to the need for them to be supportive, the better you will feel - having a support network is important. Best wishes to you! -
Counting down the days until surgery. I am excited and nervous all at the same time. I have been ready to start my weight loss journey for quite some time and am ecstatic that I've only 4 more days to go! Woohoo!

Loved ones trying to talk you out of Lap Band Surgery.
emjay replied to rachelmiller1978's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My parents were - I guess you could say not so encouraging. They knew I could lose the weight because I did in the past, however, my issue was with keeping it off and the deprivation that would inevitably cause me to go back to old habits. I've had some people make comments that they would never have surgery, but yet again, that's their choice. Nobody knows what it's like to live YOUR life and how YOU feel about your weight. If you are at a point where surgery is the best option for you - go for it. As long as you're making an informed decision and know all the good, bad and the ugly about the experience and still want to do it - don't let anyone stop you. That being said...it's WORK! To get the weight off, to maintain the weight loss, to change your eating habits and relationship with food. It's very difficult - but not impossible. Personally, I will always struggle with food. It's a combination of my childhood, past experience, current influences, and my own demons. But I own it and I work at it. Somedays are relatively easy, some I fail miserably. But all in all - it is much easier when the hunger factor is gone and you see results from your work. I wish I could tell you exactly what it is that helps me stay on the path (for the most part). It is partly the decrease in hunger, the ability of your mind to finally catch up to your body and just realize that the amount of food you eat is really what a somewhat "normal" portion size should be, looking better, feeling better, etc. But it's much more than that. My best advice is to go with your gut (no pun intended) on the surgery and after your healing stage, concentrate on eating healthier. It will help you to lessen the amount of hair loss and help you feel better. And get moving. That is the key. I don't like exercise, never have, but I do it. And I tell myself I do it for all of those people that can't. Like my parents, a friend of mine with serious arthritis, my in-laws, and all those folks who wish they could just walk down the street. If I don't want to end up with the hereditary medical conditions that plague our family, I needed to make serious changes. I wish you all the best. I truly do. Don't let those that are ignorant of what the lap band can do for you deter you from reaching your goals. mj -
Yeah the gas pain in my shoulder just started tonight. Thought I was having a heart attack too! These posts are great & have been incredibly helpful! So far this has been the worst of the pain. I'm only a week out so I think that's pretty damn good. Haven't used the pain meds in a few days but this is horrible, it hurts even to breathe. Hope it goes quick for both of us! Banded 7/31/12
Pre op weight 344, starting weight 324
Goal "No limits!"

i have heard of folks gaining weight to get it done! so how much would you have to gain to make 40 bmi? sometimes they lose the weight and have to go back and regain to resubmit- this actually happens. sad but true
