  1. you are doing great. Everyone looses weight differently. and everyone goes thru stalls or multiple stalls. Just stick to the program.
  2. OMG I am 8 weeks post op and 22 pounds down and I’m so confused. Shouldn’t I have lost more weight by now? I’ve been exercising and working with a personal trainer everyday for the last 3 weeks. I’m really unsure if I’ve stalled or if the sleeve has failed or if I’m right on track. So frustrating. Please help.

Working out and eating too much

I'm definitely hungrier when I've been doing intense exercise - and Crossfit is intense! Your body is burning up a ton of calories with that - so you'll have to find the balance where your body is getting what it needs - and you continue to lose weight. I agree with the person who suggested you have a chat with your dietitian. I don't think 1600-1700/cal a day for someone doing CrossFit 4x a week is too much, though. Are you still losing weight? If so, this may not be a problem. But talk with your dietitian.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

I had my op 15 Sept - and was doing so well for the first 3 months. Weight loss slowed in Dec and on a stall since Jan. I started at 93Kg - and sat at 73Kg. So lost around 44lbs. I have at least another 10Kg to go - but am also worried about the length. Feel like it just stopped working. Other seems to have lost double and who started at same weight so a bit disheartened ☹️Will need to see dietician.

    20 pounds in two months

OMG me too 8 weeks post op and 22 pounds down I’m so confused. HW: 275 pre-surg w: 257 CW: 235 shouldn’t I have lost more weight by now? I’ve been exercising and working with a personal trainer everyday for the last 3 weeks. I’m really more sure if I’ve stalled? If the sleeve has failed or if I’m right on track. So frustrating. Please help.
  6. I was sleeved in Dec. 2016 and did extremely well at first - I dropped about 120 lbs in about 6 months, reaching my goal weight. I had some personal/professional issues including losing my job, starting and losing my business, health issues with my kids, etc. and I slacked off and just started eating like crap again and gained almost all the weight back. I had GERD both before and after the surgery but was maintaining it with esomeprazole. I got the revision to bypass in Nov, 2021 and as of today am down a little over 65 lbs. and the GERD is gone. As for your questions: 1) Your reasons for conversion from the sleeve to bypass. - My doctor said I was eligible for a second surgery and that he needed to do an endoscopy to see if the sleeve was dilatated (enlarged). If it was, I could resleeve or switch to bypass. If it wasn't, I'd have to go with bypass. They checked and it was enlarged so I could get either one but he recommended the bypass due to the GERD and potential future complications with long term use of the medication or effects to my esophagus from the GERD. 2) What was the post op period like compared with sleeve? - About the same. I think I felt a little worse right after the surgery because it was longer. My sleeve surgery was 26 minutes, the bypass was about 3 hours. It was supposed to be a little over an hour but there was an issue with one of the stapling devices not being able to reach a certain area so the doctor had to suture by hand which took longer. I believe I felt much groggier and a little more nauseous, but after the first day it was pretty much the same as the first time. 3) What is the best and worst part of having the bypass? - Best part is losing weight again and feeling healthier. Worst part was having to go through the surgery again due to my own screw up. Also this time they put a drain in my stomach for a week which wasn't fun. 4) Any dumping issues? - Not even once.

Working out and eating too much

If you had had surgery in my program, and we assume you're a woman, you would've been recommended to go from 1200/day to 1600/day at the 6-month mark. And that's with mild, 30 min a day, exercise. They do this to make sure your metabolism doesn't get used to living on nothing (the Harvard Health Biggest Loser Study does confirm our metabolism has the ability to get a lot more efficient, aka able to live on little). So maybe you're doing it exactly right! Edit: I eat on average 2600-2800 a day with daily light exercise + lifting and HIIT training 2-3x week on top of that, and I'm adding to the higher end of that right now because I don't want to lose anymore. Just to give some perspective.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I definitely understand how you feel my friends and family eat regular foods around me and it makes me sad sometimes because i have to be on liquid diet for 2 weeks but just know eventually you will get to eat the same things they eat . Keep trying to find food that you can. Tolerate that make you full that’s what i was told certain light food might not fill you up but meat and cheese dishes might or something similar . So keep trying until you find something and know that we all are going through the same thing it’s very difficult but it’s so worth it.
  9. Hi all, I’m six months post VSG and 85 pounds down. I started working out (CrossFit 4x a week) about three weeks ago and find myself STARVING during the day and eating too much (about 1600-1700 calories) not sure if anyone else has had a similar experience when starting exercise. Lmk!

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Isn’t that weird? I find it very strange. My dr said I should be on soups until next week, then soft Solids. I swear, I’ve been told 2 different not things by my dr. Office. I made puréed chili and cheese, was able to sip 6 oz, and finally felt full. That felt amazing.

    Hello, any veterens around?

No mostly just GERD. I never made it to my goal weight with the band, so hoping to lose more weight with the revision. I just had my first appointment about a month ago to start the process, and I have one more visit with the dietician next week and then I see the surgeon for a pre op visit and I'll get my date then. We're thinking it might work out for the end of April tho.
  13. Dang it! I've given up sodas and margaritas!! No problem hijacking the thread. It's nice to have some friendly banter. I hope my body is not decided it's done losing. I'm like 2 lbs from Onderland. I'd be happy with another 15 lb loss. I could be at peace there I think. I see my doctor in another 2 weeks for the one year visit. I'll ask him. He'll tell me it's head hunger, I bet. Prob is. Thanks, everyone!

1 week away from changing my life

I got the isopure unflavored powder and the premier protein peach water. Both make me gag and the powder mixed with water made me throw up. I don't know what i am going to do for the next week. I am sitting in my office with the door closed crying because i am so hungry and the only think i have is that protein water & powder, 1 can of broth, and 1 small thing of jello. This is going to be the longest week if i have to live off of broth and jello only. I'm already super weak, i can only imagine how much weaker ill get not having the right amount of protein.

Me! March 1, I’m one week out today
  18. Hey, so I am in the early process of the getting the sleeve done. I have two more "supervised weight loss" appointments and my anxiety is through the roof. As a requirement for my insurance, I cannot gain any weight. I go next week for my weigh in and obsessing over it. I was down 8 pounds, and now I am down 5 pounds, but I still have six days to go. And then I cannot gain any weight from the previous weigh in. Anyone else feel stressed about this requirement? The whole point of the surgery is because we cannot lose weight easily or even maintain the weight. Any advice?
  19. Its been 14 weeks since my surgery and I have finally been able to eat chicken. I feel overjoyed and empowered. I wanted to do a lap around my living room. I could cry, its been soul destroying to keep trying it and failing. I made a mild Thai broth for the family with chicken drumsticks and peppers, mushrooms, potato and beansprouts. They had it with noodles. I just had a drumstick and some broth it was heavenly. The old woman is catching up Whoop Whoop

    Food Woes

So protein tricks that help me.. I start almost every morning with a protein shake mixed with half a cup of coffee and some ice (most of them are way too sweet for me to drink on their own) this knocks out 30grams of protein right off the bat. I usually also have either a light and fit Greek yogurt or Oikos Zero (both around 100 ish calories and 15 grams of protein) once a day. As other mentioned I also enjoy hummus which obviously isn’t as high protein as other things but it is low in fat/calories comparatively. I usually enjoy it with either sliced cucumbers or carrots (one thing a lot of people forget about is the importance of fiber that doesn’t come from grains/starch) I know you enjoy your English muffin and I’m ALL for enjoying the things that work for you but perhaps you could amp up the proteins and cut some carbs calories by only eating a half of an English muffin with cream cheese and then layer a little deli meat on top for extra protein? (Sliced turkey or ham would both be good with a little cream cheese or even smoked salmon/lox) When I’m working (super active Job as a bartender) I do drink a Fairlife chocolate protein shake at some point in the evening so that’s another 30 grams of protein. I do usually meal prep one actually cooked meal, this week I’m having 2.5 oz taco seasoned catfish, 2 tablespoons sautéed mixed veggies, and 2 tablespoons refried beans- I think that meals comes in at around 150 calories. If you need more protein snacks a lot of people like Quest products I think their chips are …okay… I don’t love them. I did find a brand on Amazon called IWON that is made out of brown rice, quionoa, and pea protein- they have a bunch of flavors and I like them better but they are a touch pricier and 180 calories a bag so I use those as a meal slot- but sometimes it’s good for on the go. Anyway I hope some of this is useful but either way I wish you the best of luck!

I don't know if this will work for you but I tried shaved ice with just the ice by itself and nothing else. It felt like when I had the liquid diet that soup broth, protein shake, and water were all I was able to do if any because it was hard to keep down and I had to do the liquid diet for 3 weeks longer because I had a high BMI to start off.

    Sleeve or Bypass? Confused

The surgeon may be basing their recommendation for sleeve over bypass because of the severity of your gerd & what damage it has caused. I had occasional reflux, which isn’t as severe as gerd, for decades before my surgery. I managed it with diet (no spicy food, no high fat, rich or creamy foods, only occasional carbonated drinks - champagne & tonic in a G&T - little or no caffeine). I only needed to take a ppi a bare handful of times a year. My surgeon recommended a sleeve too because I was managing my reflux well & it was consequently a pretty minor case. Do I still have reflux? Yes, but it manifests itself differently. Hiccups not as severe, no bad taste in my mouth, though I have burning in the back of my throat 3 or 4 times a week at night. I do take Nexium every morning now which my surgeon warned me I’d have to. But if you’d feel more comfortable with bypass, you have the right to request that surgery.

Anxiety about calories in pureed food

I wasn’t given a caloric goal either just portion size - 1/4 to 1/3 of a cup. Calories would have varied based upon what I used to purée the protein with say stock vs Mayo. But you are eating so little that it would be pretty impossible to eat to excess. But the questions, doubts, concerns, etc. can seem to run rampant in our head for the first couple of weeks. Give your dietician a call. They’ll either confirm you are on the right path or maybe tweak what you’re doing a little with suggestions for alternatives. You’ll feel more comfortable about what you’re doing whatever they say. Also, purées still tend to go through your digestive system more quickly so you won’t really start to feel full until you’re on solid foods. Then try not to eat until you feel full but until you’ve had enough. By the time the message gets through that you’re full you’ve usually eaten more. It’s why we’re encouraged to eat slowly. I still ask myself do I need the next bite or just want it. It’s become a great habit. All the best.
