    I need help

I think you are just right for the sleeve based upon my research. Also, if you wanted to get a revision in the future, if you don't lose enough weight, they can do that too from what I understand. Congrats!
  2. The band did not work well for me at all. I have posted about this lots and my intentioin is not to bash it, but to truthfully share my story which was less than stellar weight loss which was regained when I could no longer tolerate fill in my band due to reflux. It was a nightmare physically, and beat me down even further emotionally as I felt like such a failure. I felt alot of shame and embarrassment. I too had a terrible fear of lifelong reflux post sleeve. I spent months thinking about it. My health and quality of life at over 300# was going down hilll fast though so at some point I had to accept the "risk" of untreatable reflux versus 100% chance of early death with a side trip through disability which was the path I was on. Anyway, I will be 3 years out from revision come December, I don't take a PPI (I did first several months post op) and so far, no reflux. Keeping fingers crossed. What about revising directly to the bypass if you have a family history of reflux type disease?
  3. I have a friend who just had the sleeve as well as her younger daughter. They both have about 150 at LEAST to lose and they are first time WLS.They needed to do something.Great Losing weight ...ok.She told me she made some mistakes by waiting to long to eat on several occasions....ok I see in the future where this is going.I have a lap band...I thought it was less invasive back in 2004.Fast forward...I slime and vomit all the time.My port site protrudes and is painful and I Abe GERD and my esophagus has damage...did I mention I have struggled initially lost a minimal amount of weight ..50 pounds when I needed to lose 100.,,I am now an involuntary bulimic because of the band and its complications...trying hard to get a revision to the RNY
  4. My LapBand was nothing but problems from the very beginning - Everything I was supposed to eat got stuck and everything I should have stayed away from went down just fine. The fill in my band was unpredictable. Some days water would gurgle, others I could mindlessly eat a huge chunk of chicken or pasta and slip on through no problem. It would change depending on the time of month and there was no "sweet spot fill" everyone talks about. To make matters worse, if you ever get the flu or food poisoning it is an EMERGENT issue. (No one ever told me this was a "thing.") If your doctor is only a few minutes away and available after hours, no biggie. (Until you have to move years later or he does.) Mine was a 3 hour drive away. Imagine me heaving for hours upon hours in the backseat of the car after eating bad sashimi - My stomach was in obscene amounts of pain..I could physically feel it trying to come up, only to get stuck under the band. My ordeal started at 4am and didn't make it to the doctor until almost 12hrs later - I'm surprised that much wretching didn't cause a slip. This whole situation scared me so much, it wasn't until over a year later I went back to re-fill. There are a lot more issues people talk about above I don't have to mention again here and I know it works for some people - But it never did for me. I'm being revised to a sleeve next month and I couldn't be more excited. I want this thing OUT before it causes more damage. My doctor already mentioned he more often than not sees damage from these bands when being removed...It scars the esophagus over time, regardless of complications. My advice, do what's right for you...It is your choice and your body! I, on the other hand, would still never recommend this surgery to anyone!
  5. Well, if you've been reading the forum and seen all the people needing Lapland revisions, then this should be fairly evident. If I remember correctly, the percentage of lapbands done in 2016 was only 3% of all weight loss procedures. That number has dropped dramatically year after year with most of those moving toward VSG.

Too Much Scar Tissue For Vsg?!

My doctor did tell me that there is of course an increased risk of leak due to scar tissue. WE discussed VSG vs. RNY and ultimately I decided VSG was right for me because long term is safer than RNY. I didn't want to deal with malabsorbption or dumping syndrome. I had my band removed and revised to the sleeve in one procedure on May 29th. It took 2 hours longer than normal because of scar tissue but surgery went well and Im not having any problems.

    Revision

Did your surgeon say you are having acid reflux??? If he is not suggesting a revision and you're not having reflux, why are you having those symptoms?

    Revision

Had my sleeve in Nov 2016. Down from 334 lbs to 182 lbs, not too far from my goal weight. Have another appointment with my surgeon on Friday. Been having severe nausea and some discomfort in chest since the sleeve 15 months ago. It has gotten progressively worse until the last 2 months where I can't even eat solids without severe chest pain and nausea, so I avoid them altogether now. Had an endoscopy a few weeks ago, no stricture, just erosions. At that time my surgeon said he didn't think he would have to do a revision. Now I am starting to wonder.

  10. The decision of what procedure to get is up to you and your doctor. The most important thing is that you get the procedure you are more comfortable with, for most people with the band the fact that you're not cutting your stomach and not rearranging your digestive system was a major reason for choosing the band, at least it was for me. You should also consider what life will be like after surgery. For sleeve and bypass patients, you don't have to follow up with your doctor as often as band patients. Also the process of getting to optimal restriction is often not easy and can take several months and for some people who had to revise from the band never found that green zone. You should also consider how your eating habits will have to change for each procedure, each procedure has it's own set of issues. Also keep in mind that if you want to have the sleeve you will need to make sure that your insurance company will cover it for your BMI, some companies only cover it for patients with a BMI of 50 or higher but this will probably change relatively soon. Finally there is a new procedure called plication where your stomach is folded in on itself and sutured in a sleeve instead of being removed. Initial results show similar weight loss to the sleeve but with fewer complications and this procedure should also be reversible. Since it is new it's not covered by insurance companies yet as a stand alone procedure but they will cover it if you are also having the band at the same time. The benefit of having the combo procedure is that plication seems to eliminate some of the common band complications like erosion and slippage and it should also help you to not be able to cheat the band because your stomach size is reduced. There aren't that may doctors preforming the procedure yet but it's starting to become more common. The main drawback is that there isn't that much long term data on the procedure.

    Three Year Follow Up Apptl

Thank you, Lynda for the great post. I've been away from BP for awhile and hopped on to do some research regarding ulcers. I was also sleeved through Kaiser but changed insurance. I didn't know they did revisions for ulcers, nor did I know that ulcers were a long term effect. OR I did know and simply forgot. Either way- thanks for the post!

    Pouch reset

I think a lot of the answer lies here. Anything you do will be offset by this; eventually, your body will force you to not be hungry. On the list of survival mechanisms, it's pretty high up there. I'd honestly take a deep breath, look at this like another project to conquer, and start by giving my team where you had the surgery a call. Maybe your new set point isn't BMI 25, maybe you're doing really well by maintaining your weight where you are. Maybe you need a revision. Maybe not. All I know is that being permanently hungry never ends up being permanent. Fortunately.

    Waiting on Aetna Approval....

Thanks for the info on obesitylaw.com. I sent a request to them today to help with my appeal. How long did it take start to finish for you. This will be by second appeal. I just don't understand how they can deny when 2 dr's say this is crucial to my health. Congratulations to everyone that was approved. I have Aetna and was denied. the denial was uphelp in the first and second level appeal by Aetna. It was so stressful. The final appeal is an independent external review process. This is where the decision goes out to an independent doctor not associated with the insurance company who will decide based upon the information provided if the patient meets the standards published by NIH and other medical groups. Mine did and the decision by Aetna was overturned. The entire process took almost 10 months and was SO stressful. All of my appeals were done with the help of http://www.obesitylaw.com It cost me nothing and Kelley is the BEST !! She called me 2 days before I was going to Disney to tell me the good news. She even offered to give me passes to Disneyland that they use to take out the employees in the office each year. Unfortunately I was going to Disney World in FL so I couldn't use the passes. She was so nice I decided I would tell everyone who was having issues with approval about them. They provide an awesome service to people who could really use help. I believe her husband Walter had both Gastric bypass and a Lapband revision later on. Good Luck to anyone having to deal with Aetna.

    Stalls Da&%it!!!!

Hi neon, how are you feeling now? How is your achalasia? I have a sleeve and developed achalasia last year. I'm having a Heller Myotomy and revision to gastric bypass on 9/13. My surgeon said I would likely have really horrible and uncontrollable reflux if I didn't revise to a bypass, and I still have about 100lbs to lose from my initial surgery (I was over 400# to begin with). Curious to know more about your achalasia diagnosis and if you're able to eat better now that you've been healing for a few months.

    As Anyone

I had my 1st RNY in 2004, I had fertility problems conceiving my oldest daughter. So I was VERY surprised when I came up preggers in 2006. It was 2yrs after my initial surgery. I've regained 80lbs and just had a RNY revision to correct the opening from the stoma to intestine. Good Luck conceiving. I believe my Dr suggested to wait at least 18 months after surgery.

    February/March 2014 sleevers

Hi all I have a band revision to a sleeve on feb 18. I'm so excited! Hope all goes well for you all and keep us all posted on ur progress!
  18. I had the gastric sleeve done 2 and 1/2 years ago and I lost 70 pounds. I have kept it off and I love my sleeve. I follow my diet and I'm very comfortable with the sleeve but unfortunately I have developed severe Reflux and Gerd and no amount of medications helps me. I am going to do a revision to a bypass just to keep from getting esophageal cancer. I prefer the Sleeve and I'm sad I'm having to get the bypass but I have no choice at this point. For all of you who are undecided, if you have heartburn or acid reflux, go with the bypass, otherwise the sleeve is awesome. I'll be doing my revision in August.

    Acid Reflux

they may be able to treat it medically (i.e., with stronger meds) - but there are some people for whom the only remedy is a revision to bypass. Although it's a lot more common that it can be treated medically - so fingers crossed! (I have nothing against bypass - in fact, I have one (got it because I had GERD prior to surgery) - but it's just a much bigger deal than taking some med!)

    Three Year Follow Up Apptl

Well then I have to disagree with the 10 pound lose for revisions. I started at 308 and am now weighing in the low 140s after revision to sleeve. Revision is any other op on the stomach after WLS. For sleevers, it could be RNY, DS, or a modification of the sleeve due to ulcers. Lynda
  22. I am still preop but have heard about a lot of people having sleeve and winding up having to get it revised, but not sure why? I'm leaning more towards the sleeve but am now second guessing myself worried I'd have to get it revised Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

No need to beat yourself up over a set back. Get back on the horse. The sum of small things repeated day in and day out will get you to your goals. Your surgery restriction will become less as you progress out from surgery. The majority of sleevers can consume more food months/years out. Don't waste your first year. It's your best weight loss. You can join us on the January weight loss challenge to stay motivated and get back on track https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/421742-❤-january-2019-challenge-❤/ Things that sleevers should know and prepare for: Stretching the sleeve - It's rare. If you are concerned have your surgeon diagnose it and look into a revision. Many people confuse the normal increased pouch space with stretching. (your stomach has not grown back to full size) Many also confuse grazing with stomach stretching. Grazing is eating small meals (combinations of healthy/unhealthy food) throughout the day that total over your calorie and macro goals. It is as if you never had surgery. You will gain weight. Just because we can consume more calories with the extra space does not mean we have to fill that space. You can eat healthy foods, be satiated, and stay within your calorie goals. Off my soap box. 🙂

Bariatric surgery was a big mistake

You're really in a bad place and I am absolutely sure you had to go through the psychiatric exam and process before being given the green light for your surgery. The classes before surgery are always informative so I think what they said just didn't stick with you. I had the sleeve surgery 3 years ago and do to reflux disease getting worse I am having RNY revision surgery on July 16th. I don't expect it to be a walk in the park and I know exactly what to expect. Maybe I look at it differently but I never really ran my day to day life on the food in my life. I think that you might greatly benefit from seeking help with your mindset. I am sure that it's affecting your whole family and your quality of life. Instead of being miserable all the time find an outlet other than food to think about. Good luck to you Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

Bariatric surgery was a big mistake

Out of curiosity how long ago did you have surgery and how much have you lost as a result of the surgery. I have had multiple surgeries, I had lapband in 2012 and then revised to a sleeve due to complications. Fast forward to 2018 I developed GERD and a Hiatal hernia and in the next few months I am going to be revised to RYN. Even with all my complications I would not change my journey I have learned soo much about myself and it has truly changed my life. I have lost over 150 lbs and now get to live a full life!!
