    Robotic?

    I had the robotic hernia repair and sleeve. Took about four hours. First week recovery was uncomfortable but well managed with the pain meds. Since then, no pain meds even Tylenol. No nausea or vomiting and the incisions are healing very nicely. All in all, I was very gratified with how it went.
  2. Hello, First time poster. I live with health anxiety and I worry all the time that I am going to get some kind of significant weight-related health condition. I decided to look in to weight loss surgery three weeks ago, found a doctor, got set up woth appointments next week. Then last week I had a mammogram that showed something suspicious, so then another mammogram and ultrasound and finally a biopsy on Friday. Perhaps it is nothing but googling the specific words in the ultrasound and mammogram report donโ€™t sound great. I should get the results in the next two days. How ironic would it be to have something significant like this pop up immediately after I finally make the decision to change my health?! Iโ€™m so sad and mad. If this does turn out to be breast cancer then does that rule out weight loss surgery completely? Anyone have any knowledge or experience on that? I am trying to remain positive but emotionally I feel like Iโ€™ve ruined my life and officially missed the opportunity to get my weight under control and a healthy life back. Any words of advice or shared experiences are much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Food Before and After Photos

    Enjoying a week off work so let the home meals commence! Todayโ€™s included feeding beans (a true feat!) to usually reluctant humans. Mine- crispy street style corn tortillas, homemade refried beans, homemade pico, shredded cheese and sour cream I didnโ€™t even need. Theirs were on fajita size flour tortillas as they still balk at corn ones. I was too lazy to calorie calculate homemade refried beans so used what seemed close. Also, all dinner items were $13.44US but thereโ€™s tons of leftovers for lunches this week and Iโ€™ll end up freezing half the beans for later.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    Honestly - having studied it scientifically as best I can, I think that stalls just happen randomly and then just end - also randomly. They're part of all significant weight loss journeys. Upping or downing: calories; protein; water; exercise (including type or intensity of exercise) might coincide with a renewed loss but it's not likely to be the cause. Keep doing what you're doing and you will keep losing weight until you're done. Yes, more slowly and then MUCH more slowly, as you approach goal. I've had the same calorie intake for the last 4 months, and more or less the same level of exercise. I'm losing approx 2lbs per week but not at all in a linear fashion. Average it all out, keep on keeping on, and you'll be fine. You'll lose until you stop losing. You have done amazingly well @DaisyAndSunshine

    May 2022 surgery?

    I am the same way. I will welcome any loss after years of walking/running 4-5 miles a day and never losing an ounce. I am already so thrilled at how different I feel just from the hernia repair. 2/3 of my stomach was in my chest for probably 15 years and I didnโ€™t know. Today Iโ€™m 4 days post op and I am amazed at this feeling of calm that I havenโ€™t experienced in forever. I wonder if itโ€™s because things are back in place where they should be.

    May 2022 surgery?

    My weight is also dropping slowly. I had my surgery on May 18 and did a 3-week pre-op diet before that. But I have only lost a total of around 32lbs in 7 weeks. I am not too disappointed though because I have an extremely stubborn body in terms of weight loss. In the past when I went on a diet, no matter how strict I was and how hard I exercised I would not lose weight AT ALL. So at least this slow pace is definitely better than nothing. I will take whatever speed weight loss I can get.

    So Iโ€™m in the beginning of week three and I have not lost any weight all week. Iโ€™m also constipated. Iโ€™m down a total of 28lbs since the preop liquid diet. I started at 249lbs and Iโ€™m now 221lbs. What are you taking for constipation? How long is the stall period?

    Surgery day questions--Assistance please.

    My hernia repair, gallbladder removal and gastric bypass were last Wednesday, 6/8. Iโ€™ll try to answer your questions: I started the process in January of this year. Surgeon suspected and diagnosed a massive hiatal hernia- 2/3 of my stomach was in my chest. It explained my shortness of breath and heartburn. I was approved by CIGNA, surgery date was set. I was given a 6/8 surgery date on 5/16. I researched extensively prior to selecting my surgeon. There are quite a few MDs in my family (sister, daughter, etc) and I leave no stone unturned when I research. I looked up โ€˜complicationโ€™ rates, everything. My surgeonโ€™s practice is a Cigna Bariatric Center of Excellence. I am 1000% totally pleased with every aspect of the care I have received. My docโ€™s personality and bedside manner is/was perfect for me. I relate well to intelligent professionals in the medical field and my doc and I communicated with very level footing. He never spoke down to me, we were very conversational and he has a great sense of humor which is an absolute must for me. He told me my stay would be one overnight but possibly two. It did end up being 2 nights. I do not metabolize anesthesia well, and he got my nausea under control immediately when it was obvious that the usual protocol was not going to work for me. I saw him prior to going into the OR. He was upbeat and positive as was I. He was leaving the next day on vacation and we chatted about that. His practice has a protocol of ENHANCED RECOVERY AFTER SURGERY, and it has been a great outcome because of that. The anesthesiologist saw me prior to surgery and he used a nerve block on each side of my abdomen an hour before surgery. He said it would last for 3 days and I believe him. I did not ever need pain meds post op. Amazing, right? The biggest issue for me was debilitating nausea and it was addressed immediately and the outcome was positive. My care in the hospital was five star! I could not have asked for anything better. My husband was in my suite with me 24/7. The suites are new and resemble hotel studio suites. No kidding. Two flat screen TVs. Spotlessly clean. Everything one might need to be comfortable was there. We checked in on 6/8 at 8am with surgery scheduled for 10:20. My doc was running ahead of schedule and he had booked the OR for 4 hours because of the extensive hernia issues. He completed the procedure in 2 hours. He told my husband it was textbook and I was a very easy patient. ๐Ÿค— My husband and everyone else whose loved ones were in surgery wait in a large area. They can follow the patients progress on a tv screen using an ID number for their loved one. It indicates pre-op, entering OR, procedure underway, procedure completed, surgeon on way to talk to family, recovery room, etc. Iโ€™ve boarded cruise ships that didnโ€™t have as smooth of a boarding process as WakeMed Hospital and their surgical department. LOL I was in my room at 3:15- there was an emergency unrelated to me and I was held in recovery a little longer than is typical. Once in my room, my RN, and his nursing assistant were always there tending to me. The nausea issue developed immediately and was addressed immediately. I have used only ice for discomfort at one laparoscopic site, and I have showered and I am walking. I was nervous and antsy but the hospital staff was totally in control, responsive to any questions, and their manner put me and my husband at ease. I packed very little. Extra long phone charger, toiletries, extra undies. I went home in the clothes I wore to the hospital. Thankfully I had loose shoes. I think one might expect to be bloated with Fluid and air. The gas pain scenario that most seem to mention was not an issue for me. My husband would rub my back and โ€˜burpโ€™ meโ€ฆlolโ€ฆfor every burp I had, my husband would burp 6 times. ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚ Seriously. Ask me anything you want to know. And good luck to you,

  11. We all have natural fluctuations of a couple of pounds (mine is 1kg). You probably didnโ€™t really notice them before because, if youโ€™re like me, you rarely weighed yourself. I didnโ€™t need to be reminded I was obese. They really mean nothing. They could be fluid, constipation, diarrhoea, just your body, etc. Your weight loss will never be constant. Your graph will zig zag up & down & have odd plateaus. As long as the trend is downwards youโ€™re golden. Stalls are very common, @Crisscat. Frustrating I know, but almost every one of us experienced them. The first one (yes, first one) often occurs around week 3 & usually last 1-3 weeks. Think of them as your body taking a breath as it tries to get used to all the changes. Stick to your plan & youโ€™ll start losing again. Oh, and all because the scales arenโ€™t moving doesnโ€™t mean your body is reducing in size. You may find your pants or skirts are a little loser. Take some measurements.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    I am also in my 7th month mark and finished 6 months end of May. After scale moving for a month, it's back to stalling yet again ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ˜† Looks like my stalls will come on more frequently as I get closer to the goal. So nothing to worry as long as it keeps moving down. Still want to lose another 40. If not that, at least 30 more to feel comfortable in my shoes. I think I may need to increase my calories possibly since I am still hovering around 900ish. I am thinking to go 800ish again. Either that or it's gotta go above 1000 to 1100ish. But it's difficult to get that much food in. Sigh. It seems like I would have to eat all the time which I dislike. But I think I'll have to do it if lessening the calories doesn't work. I think stalls happen when body gets too comfortable with certain calories so I think upping is the key but I get petrified of increasing calories and stopping the weight loss. Anyhow, Let's see how far along I go.
  13. I am beyond frustrated lol. I have not lost any weight since my initial 14 lbs I lost in 9 days after surgery, I am now 5.5 weeks post op and still nothing. I go back and forth between 2 lbs. Im up 2 lbs then down 2 lbs. I quit weighing because I was getting so mad about it. Its very discouraging. I usually only eat 3-4 teaspoons in one sitting and then I feel full. I only get between 500-700 calories per day and nothing not a thing. Im due for my next weigh in on June 20th. Rather than being excited about it I am in full dread mode. I am utterly dreading it. I have had 2 other weigh ins and nothing same weight every time. **disclosure** I am not able to exercise like most on here do because I have a right knee problem and I am pending a knee replacement so I cannot go on long walks. I can barely make walking around in Walmart after 30 mins

    Congratulations! I'm one week out from my reux-en-y surgery and I couldn't be happier. The pain is a lot less than I expected.     Food Before and After Photos

    Dinner out with my colourist & her husband. Pre dinner gin & basil cocktail at local boutique hotel followed by dinner at nearby restaurant. Started with Brie baked in wood fire coals with fennel jam & fermented garlic honey. It was delicious. Wanted to scoop it up in spoonfuls but I used two small pieces of lavosh which sat ok. Then duck breast with purรฉed parsnip & baby carrots. Also sipped a glass of a lovely Grenache which I sadly couldnโ€™t finish. I ate almost one piece of duck & 1/3 of the purรฉe & carrots & have the leftovers for dinner tonight. Yippee! Lots of young beautiful girls at the hotel. All dressed the same, with their matching laminated brows, lip & check fillers, lash implants & blonde hair. All mirror images of each other. Not an individual amongst them. Sad really.
  16. Im 5.5 weeks out. I havent experienced this as of yet. Although I do not drink coffee I have started drinking from a straw which my team is totally against. Drinking from a straw has not bothered me one bit. I have also tried various foods...there is only 1 that I felt horrible after having 2 small bites and that was pizza. I felt like crap for about 3 hours. I guarantee I will not make that mistake again lol at least not for a long while. I cant say I had any of the "symptoms" listed above but I just felt awful and it lasted hours. No diarrhea, dizziness or nausea just a general feeling of ugh I feel awful. I generally eat very little in one sitting but I may have 3-4 very small "meals".

    Just wanted to vent a little, I have been looking for support groups to see if I can talk to anyone about all of this, but haven't found anything. I got VSG on march 31st 2022. The first 5 days were terrible, not only did I throw up everything but also had a really annoying cough, that made my abdomen hurt and didn't let me sleep. Got prescribed antihistamines and it got better. Stayed at home for 6-7 days. Went back to work and felt dizzy, so I had to go half days for a while (I am a veterinarian, on my feet all day). Two weeks after surgery, I started coughing again, and this time literally felt excruciating pain around the area of the incisions. I got to the doctors office crying, I was in so much pain. They did an ultrasound, bloodwork and X-rays, and sent me to the pneumologist and apparently I had bronchitis, because of the pain I had to stay home again, for a couple of days. I started treatment for it and it started getting better about after 7 days, but then three days later I started coughing. Went back to the doctor, and now had an inflamed lung. He did PCR and D-DIMER, and they were both super elevated (tested negative for COVID), and had to be put on anticoagulants and everything. Started getting better after two weeks, and lo and behold, 5 days later I get a terrible cold. Fever, congestion, and throat ache. Started getting better 3-4 days ago. Now on top of everything, I broke a toe while walking around the house barefoot. Asked the nutritionist and she said it might be because my vitamin D is low, and im not absorbing calcium as I should. Now I had to stay home as well for a week on doctors orders to rest my feet. I used to be a healthy person before surgery, never got a cold or fractured anything (and definitely have bumped my feet into chairs before). I was morbidly obese, and had joint pains but apart from that I didn't get sick. I feel very frustrated in this aspect. I have lost 50 pounds, in 10 weeks, and don't have any gastrointestinal symptoms (can tolerate basically anything, no vomiting, barely dumping syndrome), but still. I have been eager to start working out but with all these respiratory complications and now a broken toe, it's been an uphill battle.

    My First Binge :(

    Yes I have been doing shift work for 20 years now and before surgery if I took more than 4 weeks leave I found once I returned to a normal sleeping pattern I would drop 2 to 3 kgs in the time frame only to have them come back after a couple of weeks back at work. . Thank you yes I am pleased with my progress but really worried by how easily it could all be undone .
  20. It's perfectly normal don't stress and try to stay off the scales,says she who weighs twice a day lol. If you are going to weigh yourself daily pick 1 day of the week that you record your weight my day was Wednesday. Oh take measurements monthly because sometimes the scales don't move but the inches do ๐Ÿ˜
  21. you are reaching your 3rd week stall... At this time you wont really loose any weight and you can gain a couple pounds... the stall last from a week to several weeks. mine lasted 2 weeks where i did not loose anything at all and gained 2lb
  22. I am 2 weeks almost 3 weeks post op and 2x now when I get on the scale I have gained 2 lbs from the day before. Super frustrating and I'm not sure why.   24. This topic is fascinating to read, and has aligned with my experience, 12 years after WLS. It's only the past year that I've attempted to resolve my own childhood traumas and realized the link between avoiding my feelings and eating. I've not had one binge since I have been prioritizing my mental health this year. Even reading some comments, you see how we see some foods are "bad" and some are "healthy" - the judgement shows what we learned as children (and fat people). We are seen as inherently lazy, greedy and bad if obese. I know I used my obesity to be invisible, to numb my feelings, to get that pleasure hit. I don't think I am physically addicted to food, but certainly psychologically I am. It was unintentional, but certainly deliberate. Some tools I use now - 1. Journaling daily, but also when I particularly feel like eating something; asking myself why? What am I feeling? Or trying to not feel? Am i bored? Am I lonely? Am I sad? 2. Mindfulness: deliberate mindfulness, to ground myself in the here and now, and what I am actually feeling in the moment. Am I looking to the future and making myself anxious? Feeling sad about the past? Just breathe back to the now. 3. Mindful moving of my body. Riding my bicycle to work, taking a walk, yoga or dancing. It gives me time to think, and know that I am doing something for myself, and it makes me feel like today, I chose to take care of me. 4. Self care in general. Taking time to do things that make me feel good about myself. Setting boundaries for things that make me feel bad. It really helps put me in a mindset that eating healthfully is doing something FOR myself, rather than doing something TO myself.
  25. I did feel tired for a couple weeks post surgery but I think it had more to do with the surgery recovery itself. After that I was still on pretty low calories but I was fine.
