    This is me...

For my journal readers here is a bit more about me: I am 31 and the mother of two children - my daughter is 14 years old and my son is 10. I'm newly married *3rd and last time!* to a man who is 18 years my senior. I was first married at 16 - to my DD father - divorced by 19 and remarried at 22. That one didn't work after 7 years of marriage. I'm married again - more secure now, more mature, more sure of myself. The kids have had a hard time adjusting to the change... I have a day job and also own my own online company. (www.providerwatch.com and www.findadaycare.com) I enjoy living in Western Washington for the weather, the green, and the fact I can get in the car and drive somewhere. NOT like when I lived in Anchorage, Alaska! I write - poetry mostly. I love music - listening to it cause I don't have a musical bone in my body. I love to read - anything from fiction to interesting non fiction. I think I'm more serious than I should be.... From the thread "Why are you Fat?" My weight gain began about 9 years ago - it was a slow process that began with excessive drinking - high calorie drinks -depression...I gained about 30 pounds those first few years, lost some and have steadily increased reaching my all time high - currently 255. I quit drinking a year ago - eat more to replace it - and have worked at a desk job for 3 years. That combined with no physical activity. I ENJOY food, its emotional for me. When I cook and enjoy a good meal, it feels good deep down. But this good feeling is followed by guilt and remorse. When I feel full - I feel guilty. I think about being fat from the time I wake up to the time I go to bed at night and sometimes in my sleep. The bottom line is I overeat, food is emotional satisfaction, and I sit on my a$$ at work all day.

    Borderline in PA

Rita, I hate to tell you but, depending on your insurance, you may end up waiting an additional 6 months to have the lapband...if your insurance requires 6 months of documentation that you followed an approved diet plan. If your insurance doesn't require it, you are one of the very lucky ones! I am also borderline but I have chosen to be a self-pay. That way, I can have my surgery asap without having to jump through the insurance hoops or without having to gain an additional 10 pounds. I just have to attend the seminar and have my consultation...and hope the doctor will decide to do surgery.

I'm very dissapointed in my lapband

Don't get me wrong I'm glad i lost the 26 kg, but that is not the issue here. On nearly every Homepage or you lapband doc tells you the benefits of a lapband are, you get that feeling full feeling back and hardly any hunger. And by me that is absolutely not the case this started after 3 months. And that feeling full feeling I never had that. I talked with my doc about it but he blames me for it, you get advice: eating 45 min about a slice of bread or when you are hungry(and you are not suppose to) start doing exercises that would stop it, but it is all not true. The only thing I hope for is that when I lose 50 % of my overweight my insuline will start working normally again, that means losing another 10-11 kg, so I will try that to.

I'm very dissapointed in my lapband

Starting weight: 315 At my lowest weight, 240, when I would usually do about 6-8 hours of weightlifting in the gym.. Usually I would consume 6-10 scoops of Champion Nutrition whey Stack per day. This was always mixed with Water. I am not lactose intolerant. 200grams was the average, 400grams would happen only once in a great while. If I were still hungry I would eat lean, grilled chicken. My doctor and nutritionist had no problem with me consuming 1 gram of Protein per body pound, given my age and weight training schedule. I remember when I had my labs drawn 1 year after my surgery date, my protein values were at the upper range of healthy... My surgeon pointed this out and inquired about what type of protein I was cosuming and how much. I told him, his reply was something along the lines of "That's great, just make sure you drink enough water". 1-2 grams of protein per day per pound of bodyweight is the norm for serious gym freqentuers these days. The extra protein truly decreases your recovery time, but each additional gram consumed beyond a certain point results a diminishing rate of returned benefits (somewhere around the 1g/lb ratio, this should be based upon IDEAL bodyweight, which sets me up for 200g/day). It was either consume more protein, be hungry, or consume fat. ***I should add in that I only maintained this plateau for 8 months, afterwhich, I finally gave in to the fattier or more carb loaded foods. I could never break the 240 limit for any longer than a week, because at this point I would get so hungry that I was distracted from nearly everything else*** I have now cut back to about 100 grams of protein per day since I am not in training.
  6. I had the sleeve done in MX 6/27/08. My surgeon was Francisco Contreras and he was incredible as was my whole surgery process experience. I had surgery on Friday and was at the hotel on Sunday and back in my own home on Monday. I had no problems with liquids and could take my oral meds with no problems from day 1. I took no pain meds afer I left the hospital. Since surgery I have lost just over 120 lbs and am at my goal. I went from size 28 to 6 petite (surgery did not make me any taller unfortunately). I am off all blood pressure meds and have been since a few months after surgery. I am walking between 4-10 miles every morning without any struggle. I have not had ANY problems with reflux, acid or vomitting. Just occassional constipation (Miralax is my friend). I feel like I can finally eat like a normal person, no feelings of deprivation of having diet mentality. I get full easily and stay full longer. I feel like the sleeve has allowed me to learn how to eat normally for the first time that I can remember. I also feel strongly that all of the work I did on myself and my relationship to food and eating has as much to do with my success as the surgery itself. Learning about my triggers and implementing new coping skills has allowed me to work with my sleeve to get to this place.
  7. You are 10 days ahead of me. I had surgery on 4-29. I haven't eaten many solids yet. It's pretty hard for me to judge how much I am supposed to eat. I was happier on mushies and liquids. I want to keep trying solids, but I need to learn how to be a better judge of how much to eat.

    Rice?

It seems like alot of people don't do rice. Why is that? Also, I'm 3 weeks and 2 days out and I'm supposed to be in the purreed stage for another 10 days but I cannot stomach one more yogurt or cottage cheese! I had sushi for lunch...2 of them, so far so good.

    Honey

I had VSG 10/22/13 and I have had honey. I actually use it as a tincture..mix it with cinnamon and take a small spoonful at bed to ward off the flu and colds that my Minnesota weather brings my family. My family has been cold and flu free so far too. Very unusual since I have a preschooler and 1st grader. I did not dump from it..only thing I dump from is sugar free torani syrups.

    My RNY journey

Hey, I was kind of reluctant to share my story but, I think it’ll be good for me. I’m 2 weeks and 5 Days post-op. I had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass on 9-19-17. I spent two nights in the hospital. When decided to have gastric bypass surgery I was 331 lbs. The day of surgery I was 311 lbs. I am currently 297. Surgery actually went fine and there were no complications. I was in pain but that’s normal right after surgery. When I came home, again I was in pain but I was given hydrocodone for relief. As the pain started to go away I was able to do more. I was walking fine, getting out of the house, just simply getting back to my normal routine. Eating was a little difficult at first but transitioning into the different stages got easier to deal with. Of course, everyone is different but the earlier stages is where you find out what foods you can eat with no problem and what foods you can’t keep down. This past week, my pain began to increase where my main incision site is. I can’t lay in bed, get out of bed, tie my shoe laces, or pick anything up off the floor. The hydrocodone had finished so my dr suggested I take a liquid form of over the counter pain reliever ( which worked for 30 minutes at a time). I called my Dr once again because the pain had gotten so bad. He had prescribed me tramadol. Currently I’m taking tramadol and I’m pretty much still in pain. My 1-month post-op appointment is on the 18th with my surgeon and I’m hoping the pain subsides by then. How long has your pain lasted? How many of you get emotionally overwhelmed by the pain? -Christine D-

    the scale is finally moving

JudyJudyJudy, Swai is a very mild tasty fish, suitable for people who don't really like fish. (I think it's milder than tilapia). I find it at Krogers all the time for $1 per 4 oz filet and fix it all sorts of ways. Probably my favorite it to salt and pepper it, bread it with grated Parmesan and broil it until done (7-10 minutes) in my little toaster oven. Using the parmesan cuts out the carbs in a "breading" and adds some great flavor. I've also simply sauteed it in a bit of Olive Oil Pam in a skillet on the stovetop. It's very flaky and is easy to digest. It might help when you don't have shrimp on hand.

    Got My Band 12/20

I got banded on 12/19 - are you all still doing liquids or have you moved to mushies?
  16. I paid $500 in advance, and the balance (by cashier's check) the day I arrived at the hospital. I spent one night at the hotel and three at the hospital. We all left around 7 am for the airport and it is recommended you try to schedule your flight (I think) for noon-ish. There is a mall not far from the hospital, but I have to say, my companion was kind of bored. The hospital is about a 10 minute drive from the hotel - my Dad stayed at the hotel for the whole time, rather than staying with me at the hospital and he took cabs back and forth - about $5.00/trip. (Using US dollars was fine... we never changed any of our money into pesos.) The drive from the airport to the hospital is about 90 minutes - it takes longer going back, because of the wait at the border when entering the US. Feel free to ask any other questions you may have. Hello, Yesterday was my 19 months out from surgery. I just want to say, restriction is still great if I eat my Protein first and make it dense. If I eat things like greek yogurt, chili, slider foods etc, I do get hungry much quicker than I used to. For those of you still in the early months post-op, please remember that this is the time to learn those great new lifestyle habits that will help you stay successful in the long run. I still love Sleevie as much as ever!
  18. I agree with Katie713 - Veggies are your best friend also cut out some carbs that will make a big difference.... im at 13 lbs so only 10lbs to meet my 10%
  19. I'm on week 5 of the options program ...I'm excited to finish the class and start my new life!!! I'm stressing about the 10% that I have to lose. Tracking is as bad as I thought it will be!! Good luck to you all!
  20. I'm not complaining at all but I get so full after one or two bites. Is this normal? It takes me over an hour to eat 3 ounces of protein.

    7 days after placement

Congrats and welcome to the band world. Step one complete. Remember you have to alter your old habits. TV is the pits. My suggestions here is to write out a list a little things you want to get done around the house or new things you wnat to do now that you are banded. Walk and think at the same time. Food commercials on TV will drive you mad at this stage. Start planning on what you want to do as your healing time progresses. Get losts of rest and then walk some more at tleast every hour. I apresume since you are at home you have not gone back to work if your were already working. It is a good time to work on new things. This is a new journey. Just remember as you progress your willpower will be tested and tested again. You are in this for the long haul, make sure they people that are supporting you know this and continue to support you as well. I am 9.5 months out, sized down from a 16/18 to a 6/8 62 lbs lost. only about 15-20 to goal. I have made some "poor" choices but I have recovered and you do better the next time. I have a total of 6.5cc in a 10 cc band, coming from6 fills. Follow the DR's rules. I see alot of important stuff on here that would have answered alot of my questions early on, if I had know the site was here. So read and look around if you have questions or concerns, you should not be afraid to contact your DR if needed. Good luck. keep up the good work..
  22. I'm a T1 with a pump. I can tell you that my basals have dropped several times since my preop diet started. What I've found that works well is running a temporary basal of 90% after I've struggled to maintain a good blood sugar for a few days. Once that works out, then reprogram a new rate for 10% less. My boluses are down, and TDD is down a lot. I was at a TDD of 150-160 units a day and now I'm 40 or 45. This is over the course of a little more than 2months. I started my preop on 1/31 and got my surgery on 2/14.

How do you determine goal weight?

I set my goal weight today for my ticker...lol I picked mine based on a normal bmi. That's my ultimate goal. My "pie in the sky" goal is ten pounds less than that, and my "going for broke" goal is an additional 10 pounds less (aka my pre-preggers weight).
  24. From what I have read on here the pre-op diet varies greatly. Some don't have to at all and some (like me) have at least a 10 day liquid diet.
  25. I still eat this quite frequently and add a scoop of unjury Unflavored Protein powder for extra protein. It's cheap, easy and good. The sesame oil really does make it taste just that much better. Prep Time: 5 minutes Cook Time: 10 minutes Total Time: 15 minutes Ingredients:4 cups chicken broth or stock 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1 -2 green onions, minced 1/4 teaspoon white pepper Salt to taste A few drops of sesame oil (optional) Preparation:In a wok or saucepan, bring the 4 cups of chicken broth to a boil. Add the white pepper and salt, and the sesame oil if using. Cook for about another minute. Very slowly pour in the eggs in a steady stream. To make shreds, stir the egg rapidly in a clockwise direction for one minute. To make thin streams or ribbons, gently stir the eggs in a clockwise direction until they form. Garnish with green onion and serve.
