  1. You haven't had any fills yet, so you are probably still eating too much. This healing time is a very rough time for most. Your stomach has almost healed and you have little or no restriction. Most doctors will tell you not to worry about small weight gains during this time, this is the time for healing only. Once you have your fills at the right level you will only eat 1-2 eggs for breakfast, and 2-3 ozs of chicken and 1/2 cup salad for lunch. You should get to where you can eat 3/4 to 1 cup of food total at each meal. At the moment you might be consuming too many calories with the protein shakes also. Try tracking your food intake and see how your protein levels and calories are. You may find that you don't need the protein shakes and this will drastically reduce your calorie intake. Once you get restriction you might be able to get by with 900-1200 calories a day. i try to keep mine around 800-1000 a day.

Kareyquilts, Mimin, Ghost & BJean The Final Push

Julie: I've had the same fill level for quite a while and sometimes it feels too tight and sometimes not tight enough. I think that you just have to watch what you eat and hope that the band cooperates. It's a great tool sometimes and sometimes we have to be our own tool. I have found that exercise is my most constant weight loss ally. Mimin: Your weight gain does not sound healthy. Is that common with lipo? I thought most of my swelling was from the tt, but maybe the lipo was more of it than I thought. But girl, that is a lot of water weight! I think that Ghost had a similar problem. Why can't you use a diuretic? How about just drinking a lot of water with lemon in it or some naturally dieretic tea? When you get that water weight off you're going to show an awesome weight loss! Anyway, I think I would park myself at my doctors till he did something! The HCG diet is expensive (of course). The 40 day supply of the hormone was $210. The doctor's office over seeing the process for 45 days is about $525. It's kind of a rip off, but I'm willing. Let me be the guinea pig, while you recover, and let you now if it's worth it or not!

    Newly Banded in Cincinnati

I think alot of people see an initial weight gain right after they get home from the hospital because they've had you on IV fluids continuous and medications can sometimes affect things too. Hang in there, you'll see the scale go down soon.

    Low Carb Banders Unite

I am down 1 pound this morning, and TOM has visited today. Usually, that means weight gain!! I am also back in moderate ketosis. Are you a nurse, Mamato?? Before i started staying home with all these kiddos I was a nurse. Well, still am just not working right now!! Way to go everyone!! Here's to another great day!!

    Oh so scared

I'm totally with you! I went to an orientation when reality started to hit me in the face. If I don't do anything to get my weight gain in control then I'm doomed to a spine, knees and ankles that will reduce my quality of life & I got 2 kids & a husband depending on me. I am scared sh*tless about going under anestsia(sp?) but I guess I am finally more scared to gain another 20 lbs. because I won't fit in my clothes or in regular movie theater seats...how embarrassing!
  6. This is a great post! It came right when I needed it. Been a little down, no loss in 3 wks, but I had a 4th fill today, so keep your fingers crossed! Ok, my list of things I hope to achieve/be able to do again thru weight loss: NOT have to sleep with 3 pillows, propping up so I can breathe NOT have my shirt ride up and "plub" pop out above my waistband when getting in the car Be able to buy a cute pair of boots that will zip all the way up my calves NOT be asked "When are you due?" (when not actually pregnant) Do active stuff on vacation like zip line, horseback riding, parasailing, etc Buy a cute bra with fun details, not an orthopedic, thick shoulder pads, old lady bra Be able to run into old friends without feeling the need to make an excuse for my weight gain ("been a sad couple years", "having health issues", etc)

    Anyone with hypothyroidism or PCOS???

I have not been banded and am in the "hurry up and wait" period. I have a hypo thyroid and have been medicated for the last 10 years. Yes it is with me for life, but as long as I stay medicated it will not cause weight gain. Have you been banded?? Are you on levoxal or the generic?? Have they regulated your meds yet?? It took years to get mine to where I was not on too much or too little. Hope this helps..Kimberly

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

Angelshere: Have you figured out your calorie intake for an average day? I find it hard to believe you will gain "fat" weight at what seems to be a low calorie count. Commercially prepared Soups and boullion do contain a LOT of salt - sodium will cause Fluid weight gain. Plus, you're healing, and even thought it doesn't seem like it, there is fluid from swelling of internal tissues. I did notice the same things going on post-op and from time to time. Also, certain hormones and cause cyclic weight gain. It's really hard when you think you're doing everything right, and the scale just doesn't cooperate! If your calories and Proteins are where they should be, I really think you will make progress. I think solids are easier since you have other choices than all that salty stuff like soups. I too have been on plateaus, even gained weight and I can't figure out what the problem is, but they do end! I must have a pretty low metabolism, because I have found I need to keep my calories to about 1,000 or less a day or I don't seem to loose. But when you add up the totals, I am doing great. SO...hang in there. Keep up the exercise, look at the total picture of what you're eating. Give youself time to heal. Consult your dietitian for some suggestions and advice.
  9. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 1993. I've been on medication ever since and regardless of how much weight I've gained or lost, the need for medication hasn't changed. I still go in every 12 months for re-evaluation and testing-- and sometimes more often if I'm feeling like it needs to be adjusted. I was banded in December, and though I've only lost 50 pounds, I'm currently weighing in at my lowest in 15 years. Once the medication is properly adjusted, I feel much more like my old self. I still struggled with carrying extra weight and all that entailed until being banded. I was more tired, less likely to engage in anything physical--just getting up every day was a struggle at 300 pounds. While I'm sure my thyroid contributed to my initial weight gain, I can't claim that I got to 300 because of it.....my meds are on target and I still kept the weight. I had to change my lifestyle, and only the band helped me do that. Good luck. It does take a while to get your medication on the right track--like upwards of 6 months, but it will make a huge difference. It just requires patience. Hope it all works out for you.
  10. Well, I don't know much...but I do know that I was 200 before I gained to 295. And I'm convinced I would have continued to go up had I not had the surgery. So I guess I think if we have a weight gain problem for whatever reason, it is the same problem no matter at 200 or 300 pounds. And if lap band surgery is the solution...why shouldn't it be a solution at 200 as opposed to 300. Now having said that, IDEALLY, yes we would have all stopped gaining weight before 200, exercised more, and just did it on our own. But we didn't....because we couldn't. So I try not to be too judgmental for folks who decide to take care of their "same" problem at an earlier stage than I did. I just about died waiting too long. I wouldn't put that off on anyone. Best wishes!
  11. I was just banded a couple of days ago, and I was one of those who was not much over 200. Of course, define "not much". Our ideas may be completely different. I feel that if your bmi is in a dangerous zone, and you have done what everyone else has done then yes, one should consider and qualify for wls. Why wait until they are any heavier???...and YES, if they don't do something about it now, chances are very great that they will only get heavier, and have more health risks. Should one wait until they are 20 or 30 pounds overweight to go on a diet, or should they work on it as soon as they become aware of the extra weight gain? It's the same with wls. One shouldn't have to wait until they are at a larger weight than they are ready to combat. I have had people tell me that I'm not big enough to do wls, but they don't know me and the battle I have fought all my life.
  12. I was banded this month. I tipped the scales at a whopping 201 right before surgery but had lost 20 pre-op. I am 5'3" and had (I say...HAD) problems with high BP, joint pain, and reflux. Now in less than a month, thats all gone! My insurance denied, not because I was such a little bit of fluff, but because my empoyer put in an exclusion. Was it worth it for me? YES! I still haven't lost a lot and havent even had a fill yet, but the other aches and pains have gone away...presumably replaced by port pain...sigh. But that too will go away eventually. I have steadily gained every year and I am now 56 and finally figured out that if I keep doing what I always did...diet, I would always get what I always got....more weight gain. I am now committed to eating healthier and in smaller portions and I need my band to remind me when I have had a healthy portion. My docs office figured out that to be successful, I only needed to lose 60 lbs. I doubt if I could have ever done that on my own. My own personal goal is to get down to 120 or a loss of 80 lbs. It saddens me that the insurance industry is so screwed up with their restrictions and hoops you have to jump through. I mean how crazy is it when you read on these boards of people adding weight in their pockets to weigh enough to qualify or those that wonder if its worth it to gain x number of lbs just so their insurance will approve them. I would never judge another person's desire to get to and maintain a healthy weight. I say good luck to us all on our journey.
  13. My stats when I was banded: 5'6", 195 lbs, 57 years old. I paid for my own operation. My weight gain was post menopausal and getting worse every year. I am glad I was able to get banded when I did and the band worked really well for me as my problem was simple portion control. Exercise just made me firmer but I was still apple-type chubby and we all know that dieting is just a yo-yo trip.

New to PCOS and have some questions?

I too have PCOS, but stopped getting my period. If you haven't already, you should "google" PCOS and read all about it. There is a wide spectrum of symptoms that go along with it. I have all the aweful ones- darkening of the skin, skin tags, weight gain etc... I take the same meds as you've been prescribed. Expect to feel a bit on the nauseated side. I felt like I was car sick for about 3 weeks- YUK! I think I've had it for a long time, but was just diagnosed last summer and that was when I made my final decision for WLS. I am extremely frightened of getting diabetes and heart disease. I wish you the best of luck with your journey. Keep us posted!
  16. Hello everyone! I am Jacquie and I am new to LBT. I live in OK and I am set to have my banding done in Aug! Having set the date, let me assure you, does not mean I am definately having this done! I still have TONS of unanswered questions and anxieties about having this done! #1- I am on insulin...so I have concerns about insulin during the pre-op 10 day diet and of course after surgery! #2- I only have to lose 70 pounds max.....my Dr said that with the band I will have to excercise atleast 2 hours a day to lose regular and maintain the loss for LIFE.....so my question is, if I have to work out/walk/whatever for 2 hours a day for life with the band..couldn't I just do the excercising WITHOUT the band? #3- I maintain a strict 1,200 cal diet and count my carbs, fat, protiens, since I am on insulin and BP meds... I do walk 30 minutes and more daily. If I can do that without the band, do I really NEED the band? #4- I wanted the band so I could get off of unsulin and the BP meds...Dr said I would need to lose atleast 60 pounds to do that...soooooo my question again, is if I have to lose that much to get off the meds, and I only need to lose 60-70 pounds anyway..do I need the band? #5- I was told the RNY would be a faster way to get off the meds..but I also know the complications are greater... has anyone changed from a band to the RNY? #6- I have seen FAILURE from all options..I have seen people lose up to 100 pounds by eating/excercise and I have seen people banded and bypassed...and in all forms of weight loss I have seen the weight gain return in 2-5 years....My dr. says that failure with the band is 80% greater than with other WL options...so just what is it that makes people lose with the band and helps them keep it off? #7-the say the band is for LIFE..yet in doing alot of research reading, I see a VAST amount of removals in less than a year and even more within 2-3 years..... what predicts how long a band will stay in ? so many questions and thus far after attending 4 seminars, a dozen or more support group meetings, and reading for hours on the internet...I have NOT found any good answers! Thanks for any replies and info! Jacquie:thumbup:

    November Nymphs Summer Meltdown Challenge

Cindy, I'm all for blaming the husband. I blame him for my gaining weight in the first place! Hell, he's used to taking the blame. Kids too, especially the teenager...or is that why my hair is going gray? Sades, what do you mean the answer to life is 42? Do you mean age 42? I'm 44, does that explain why my body loves to torture me with overnight weight gains? :crying:

    Issues/weight gain...

I feel your pain. I was banded 6/2005. Lost over 80 lbs over two yesrs starving. I was to tight or i would have lost more i think. I got so tight my band shut off and my Dr. was relocating. He told me to go to the ER. Huge mistake! They removed all Fluid and opened my band. He said I was very malnurished. So they said take a 2 month holiday. Weight gain is horrible. So I went back for a fill and it was to tight again after a week. He unfilled it then way to loose. To much money on it so I put it off and I am at square one. My doctor appoligises and said they should never fully remove the fluid. It is so hard to adjust. We now are going to start over. I am doing low low to no carbs to start until after fourth and the famiy leaves back to their home. Then I am going to give it a try again. Startrd the gym too. X your fingers for me.
  19. I show 7.1 lbs for you Dear! AND I must say you have been on your best behavior lately - on that Loser's Bench! You have been keeping your hands to yourself and playing nicely! I'm very proud of you! My favorite scrubs were ones that had baby otters on them! Just adorable! Wish I could wear them now! I am sick of PURPLE! I loved when Lifesaver thought we were all blaming our weight gain on poor Tom in the office! That was hilarious! I was engaged to a man named Tom once. A long time ago -- when Dinosaurs ruled the earth!
  20. @ Mal -- I absolutely think that we should blame "office TOM" for any weight gain!@ Dee -- I know those "working girl" scrubs all too well. My sexiest ones had jelly Beans printed on them ~~ and probably some in the pockets, too, back then . Congrats you bunch of losers!!!!!!!!!! You know who you are! Ami -- Belly dancing, SO COOL! I hope the Motrin does the trick -- keep us posted. SidAnn -- One word = AWESOME! LA -- Thanks for the Protein calorie list -- another great find! Mini -- Pack your bags, woman! It's almost time! 5 weeks left!! I think I'm down a total of 7 (help me with my math Dee), which means I've got to get my fanny perpendicular and crank it up to get 13 off in 5 weeks. Let's go peeps! We can do this!!
  21. I was banded June 17th and am doing very well. I had way less pain than I had anticipated and never had that evil gas pain. I was able to sleep in my bed on my right side or back from day one! I have been following my doctor's diet to a T and am not feeling deprived or hungry. The Protein drink I have been using is AmazeRX because that's my surgeon's drink, and I really like it. I have no idea how much weight I have lost because I had my husband hide the scales. I go for my 2 week follow-up on July 1st and I'll find out then using the exact same scales I was on for my last pre-op weigh in. Plus, I didn't want to get disappointed when I got on the scales while I was still swollen and see a possible weight gain. This past week I was able to sit through a 7 hour 5-day math workshop without feeling pain. I also started riding my recumbent bike again and got up to 20 minutes a session. That has really pumped up my energy and feeling like I'm "normal" again!
  22. Hello everyone, Well my name is Angel and I just recieved word from our insurance that they approve Lapband and I had seen the commercials almost everyday and just decided to see the doctor to see if I qualify, I did! I have been battling my weight now for 4 yrs ever since I had my eptopic pregnancy I have just been getting bigger and bigger no matter what diet or new exercise I did. Well we finally got stationed here in Jacksonville and I went to meet my new doctor and tell her everything that has been going on, we did the blood work and also found out I have PCOS which not only explains the weight gain but my infertility as well. So now I am medicated for that and again was approved for the lapband so I go and meet with that doctor. I am really excited and have read through some of the forums on this site and I just feel more ready to get this done so I can start my new life too. Well I will let u all know how my appointment goes! Talk 2 u then!Oh i did forget to mention I weigh 240 and am only 4'11 so yeah it is time for this new life to come already!

Have ladies noticed that time of month

My period was regular, 28 days to the day, and then, on the day of my surgery got it. 4 days early. Then, didn't get it for nearly 6 weeks later, and I panicked that I was pregnant just after getting the band. I wasn't. Then, got it 3 weeks later, and finally in April, it went back to normal. Now, I get really bad cramps and visible weight gain. Weird because I had never had that problem before. I get cramping on day 2 and 3, and then its over and the period is over by day 4. Doctor said that peoples cycles change and mine coincided with the lap band surgery.

    Borderline in PA

I live fairly close to Monroeville. My Dr. didn't measure me during our consultation. My husband and I went together and sat in a room and discussed the procedure with the Dr. he did take my vitals and looked at pressed on my stomach. I never took off my clothes. I know that there were a lot of woman that wore weights and put weights in their pockets when I was attending my lifestyle classes. They were in a similiar position as you...right on the borderline of meeting the criteria for approval. The medical assistant will ask you to remove your shoes and socks but that's it. At one time someone suggested that you could put fishing weights in your bra as well. I would take those measures as well as drink a ton of Water before going into your appointment. My insurance did not allow any weight gain during the six month lifestyle phase...there were times when I wished I had done the weights...but I ended up being able to take off 5 pounds during the lifestyle classes. Good luck!

    Bandsters Rules

Great posts everyone!!! In addition to all the others: If you are struggling (even if you are not): Journal what you eat and how much. This will help you be accountable to yourself and more conscious of the choices you make. I know most of my eating issues are around my "unconscious" (or maybe just "oblivious") eating. Plan to learn to eat the way you want to eat for the rest of your life as soon as you can after banding. Don't go on a diet - develop an eating plan that works for you and your lifestyle. Once you get to your goal, you can introduce higher quanitities of food, but if you haven't learned what to eat and how much, that is recipe for weight gain. Know yourself and your challenges. Then make a plan to accomodate those challenges. I am an evening eater and experience lots of head hunger in the evenings. Refusing to snack is not realistic for me. Instead I plan Snacks that are low calorie and low fat, but that still satisfy my urges. In a nutshell - gain consciousness and plan!!!! Don't expect the band to do the job for you. Good Luck!!!
