  1. Who is your surgeon? What is your BMI? Lapband takes more work and motivation. There are pros and conswith both. I also felt that push towards gastric through kaiser bit I decided on the band knowing I would have to work harder at it!! My BMI was 40 and the band tends to work better with BMI of 42 of below according to my surgeon. Kaiser just wants you to be sure you know the stats and only you know how much work your willing to put in.........I have been banded only two weeks and have lost 10 pounds. But I lost 25 pre op........I was afraid with gastric bypass of the malabsorbtion and getting sick since I am vegetarian!! That was the deciding factor for me......

    Food Police!!

Personally I would send a meeting request and reserve a conference room so this meeting will be private. I would tell him that you are very uncomfortable with him policing your eating habits. That you do your very best to eat healthy and if you end up having to eat a unhealthy meal on RARE occation; it is not his place to comment. Also that he does not know how you will eat when you get home to make up for a higher calorie lunch. If after you have this meeting he continues to comment on your eating habits go to HR. What he is doing is bullying you. Tell them you've spoken to him privately and he is continuing to harrass you. It is their job to deal with work place bullying. Trust me an HR generalist/manager does not want you going to their boss (HR Director/or VP) because they've failed to deal with work place bullying. I had a boss that would comment about everyones lunch. She was a vegetarian and no matter how healthy your lunch was she would say gross/disgusting there's meat in there! She would have vegan soup for lunch that had 35 calories and make sure EVERYONE knew about it. She also however would talk endlessly about her alcohol fueled orgies on the weekend! NOT kidding. I had several thin coworkers comment to me how annoyed they were about the way she commented about everyones food habits, yet she was a high functioning alcoholic. Oh and by the way she would go to the company store at the other end of the building and buy cookies and eat them when she thought no one could see her. Priceless. This is why I don't tell coworkers that I've had WLS. You can be guarenteed that every though I have skinless chicken breast and raw veggies (no dips/dressings) everyday for lunch; the day I have a 1 inch square piece of birthday cake someone will comment about it. For other readers esp. if you work in an enviroment with HR you boss does not need to know what surgery you are having. That is the beauty of HIPPA. A manager does not have the right to determine what medical proceders, ordered by a doctor are neccesary. The notes my doctor gives just say the gastro/intestinal dept; says nothing about WLS. I had a coworker have breast reduction surgery and was out on disability for 6 weeks. Some might argue the company should not have paid her to be off 6 weeks after breast reduction. Clearly WLS is more health oriented that that.
  3. I am also a teacher and since it is summer I love to sleep in. If I eat breakfast too early I'm really tight but if I wait till mid morning 10ish I can eat something small like the sausage I ate this morning. bR: Small smoked sausage link with a spoon of grits(cooked for hubby) Lunch: 4 oz of vegetarian chili(I got some nutrisystem meal at Big Lots, suprisingly good an a couple of crackers but it took me a minute to work it down Snack: sugar free icecream serving Dinner: 4 chicken wingettes(the drum only)

I keep seeing you can have sugar

I don't tolerate that type of protein only vegetarian protein. I had a lap band hand lost over 100 pounds and maintained it until the band failed. I know what to eat, and don't do sugar very much. I'll save further questions for my doctor.

    Paleo Diet!

Sure no prob guys. Here are some of the books I found with the higher ratings and reviews. 1) 101 BEST Paleo Diet Foods by Health Research Staff 2) Everyday Paleo by Sarah Fragoso 3) Paleo Comfort foods: Homestule cooking for a gluten- free kitchen by Julie & Charles Mayfield 4) The Power of Paleo! By Mario ans Vienna Zander's 5) The Paleo diet solution: the modern caveman's cookbook 6) The Paleo diet cookbook by Loren Cordain, Ph. d. Now, don't forget this will be a lifestyle change not a temporary fix. Basically your body will be burning fat for energy instead of carbs. This is a very carb restricted diet. You're body will be in ketosis. But many people who assume they just do this for a week or 2 and than go back to a higher carb intake bight find the lbs coming back or weightloss stalling. I think this works for me bc I can live without rice for the rest of my life now.ni made the decision that is rather be healthy and I want to motivate my mom and dad who have a plethora of health issues and only cook very salthy, MSG infested, high fat Filipino food. I want them to live past their parents (bfathers died at 65ish) and have them walk me down the aisle and meet my kids. Besides my house is kind of a slaughter house. Sorry vegetarians:( but we love seafood and meat over here. I think it'd be the perfect diet for me. Also, did you ever think about this?: white rice doesn't taste like anything! Hahahah my nephew told me that the other day saying "Awww mommmm, but whats the point? It doesn't taste like anything!" smart 4th grader. I just found another good book by Loren Cordain and Friel: the Paleo diet for athletes. The first 20 pages are very good.

    fill after almost 2 years

it will be 2 years for me on april 22nd this year and i have fills every 1-3 months. have lost about 170 pounds. i measure everything, am a vegetarian and do my best but damn my sweet tooth. sometimes it little squares of chocolate w/ nuts so i pair it w/ a protein and sometimes i go all out and eat donuts or pie or whatever. some days i hate myself. i am getting to the point i don't want to go in anymore bc i am embarrassed at the gain. i feel like a failure. my doc says this is normal based on the amt i lost and at the stage i am. he's happy with me but i'm not. the whole point of this for me, was to learn how to deal with stress and i haven't. i quit smoking but i munch, i am in school at 44 yrs old maintaining a 4.0 but i munch on sweets. i even bought hemp hearts which are proven to reduce a person's addiction to sweets and i still have it. ughhh....

questions for my plant based friends

New here. I was sleeved on 9/18 but I've been vegetarian for a very long time. So far I've lost 30lbs. I've been eating a lot of cheese, yogurt and eggs with the occasional nut butter. I prefer using a nutra bullet over my juicer so I retain the Fiber. The only thing I'm adding right now is spinach so I don't overwhelm my tummy. My biggest challenge was finding a Protein powder. I am allergic to food dyes and stevia. I prefer to limit my soy intake. I finally went with a whey powder that I usually add some nut butter to in order to mask the taste. I'd like to eventually transition to vegan eating.

On the go food for travel?

I tend to go for a vegetarian frittata - and request a side of aioli or dressing just in case you need moisture - the soft pumpkin/potato/vege filling is great tasting and very edible, but you still must GO SLOW and CHEW WELL!!!! no matter how soft - soft can block as much as hard. or a goats cheese tart. Caesar salad is good too. The beauty of these types of foods - they are usually Entrees, so smaller portions, and if the selection is good - order two entrees (you dont have to eat them entirely), noone will be any the wiser and it is actually far more interesting as entrees are much more exotic than mains usually.

    Vegetarian Chili

The thought of spring and all the yummy veggies and produce that will soon be reaching us has me so happy. There is nothing better then produce markets. No more grocery store until fall. So here is a recipe for vegan chili. A little twist without meat but who needs meat when you have so much Protein in one bowl. The vegan crumbles you can get in any grocery store in the frozen section. Made from soy but you will never know it is not hamburger. 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/2 medium onion, chopped 2 bay leaves 1 teaspoon ground cumin 2 tablespoons dried oregano 1 tablespoon salt 2 stalks celery, chopped 2 green bell peppers, chopped 2 jalapeno peppers, chopped 3 cloves garlic, chopped 2 (4 ounce) cans chopped green Chile peppers, drained 2 (12 ounce) packages vegetarian burger crumbles 3 (28 ounce) cans whole peeled tomatoes, crushed 1/4 cup chili powder 1 tablespoon ground black pepper 1 (15 ounce) can kidney Beans, drained 1 (15 ounce) can garbanzo beans, drained 1 (15 ounce) can black beans 1 (15 ounce) can whole kernel corn Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Stir in the onion, and season with bay leaves, cumin, oregano, and salt. Cook and stir until onion is tender, then mix in the celery, green bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, garlic, and green chile peppers. When vegetables are heated through, mix in the vegetarian burger crumbles. Reduce heat to low, cover pot, and simmer 5 minutes. Mix the tomatoes into the pot. Season chili with chili powder and pepper. Stir in the kidney beans, garbanzo beans, and black beans. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer 45 minutes. Stir in the corn, and continue cooking 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy! I am thinking of making a vegan cook book. I have a lot of recipes and I love to cook vegan meals.
  13. So I see so many posts about the food types that need to be consumed post surgery but from the looks of it, it seems that one MUST consume at least egg and fish which I don't!!! I do consume dairy and milk products though but nothing else i.e. egg or fish etc. so what can I do? And just in case you're wondering, yes I am an obese vegetarian. I'm 440lbs and I'm vegetarian! lol... Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  14. I eat a ton of refried Beans and cheese: 1/4c vegetarian refried beans plus 2T reduced-fat mexican cheese equals 3g of fat and 7g of Protein. I don't puree them, just heat them up in the microwave and stir the melted cheese into the beans. The beans are soft enough that they break down easily with chewing and I haven't had a problem from not-pureeing. I also make chicken taco meat and puree it with a 50/50 mix of taco meat and salsa. 1/4c of the taco meat plus 2T reduced-fat mexican cheese equals 2g of fat and 14g of protein. I personally puree the salsa because the kind I use includes onions and I want them to be as tiny as possible in order to go down easily.

Anyone Else Go Offtrack & Gain?

Hi Deedee Here's how you get off the depression train. Jump off!! Don't let yourself continue to slip down that slope because the farther you fall, the longer the climb is back up. You say you've given yourself a second chance. Well now it's time for your third chance, fourth or fifth... whatever! The important rule here is to never EVER give up. The day you give up is the day you fail. Until you do that, keep it moving. I can't really give any vegetarian idea advice but anything you have to do to kick start your new day is what you should do. Anything short of something unhealthy. Best wishes on your upcoming nuptials!! Use that as your motivator to get back to it. I don't think there is anything wrong with having that proverbial carrot leading you in the right direction. Take care!

Anyone Else Go Offtrack & Gain?

Valentines Chalange: http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/291848-valentines-challenge/ I am a vegetarian too, and managed to lose to goal on veggies, dairy and eggs(a few). It can be done. I also went through a period of time where I was gaining... and it took a while to really turn it around, but I did, and am now at goal after 3 years. I find I really have to cook to get the best quality vegetarian food, with the occasional meal out. So many restaurants serve Pasta or french fries and such for vegetarians, really junk food. I had to really get creative to get enough Protein in, but it can be done. Pasta does have some protein, but really most of it is not that great for you. I pick out Dreamfields or whole wheat pasta and measure out 1 oz if I want pasta. how about: low fat cheese sticks, soy and regular milk, yogurt, seitan products, TVP, tofu, Dried tofu sheets (yuba) Beans, nuts, nut butters, seeds, tempi, eggs, egg whites... there are so many veggitarian sources of protein to choose from, morning star has some great products. I make my own "turkey", meat loaf and beef steaks from great recipes I have found along the way. It does take work, but you can make and freeze in individual servings. I cook on sunday for the week. Really use those veggies too, most of them are low calorie and so delicious, raw or cooked. I make a pot of veggie Soup sometimes every night of the week (then its on to stir fries and casseroles...) You can do it! Just stay away from sugar, white flour and the like... dump it out or give it away! Set yourself up for success by planing ahead, shopping for success, figure out your favorite foods and modify them to fit your protein and lower carb needs. I like mexican food, but could not eat that every day or fat fat fat!!!! I do make pots of tomato veggie soup, with chili and cumin, sliced onions,"groun round" and a tiny bit of sweet corn... really so good, and leaves me feeling like I just ate a big mexican meal. My husband likes it too. You can do this! Use Myfitnesspal, measure or weigh the food for a while, then test again now and then... weight yourself, and measure yourself too! Its a new start. Get out there and move, find something you have always wanted to try, or learn... I started birdwatching, and go out the the local "wilds" 2-3 times a week for a walk and a look. I don't even know I am exercising, its just so fun and beautiful! And last by not least, hang out here, the support is great!
  17. HI...I was very happy when i read what you had written because I wanted to say the same things. I have been changing my mind on an hourly basis and this is all i have been thinking about. I am 31, 5'4, 230 lbs and BNI 39. I don't have any health issues from my weight YET either. I hate being out of breath too and NOT being able to shop in regular stores like my friends. I hate hate hate being fat. I have the same fear of how this will change my life...I don't feel i over eat all the time...i just love to eat the wrong things and constantly. I hate throwing up with a passion so i am afraid that i might have that problem. My husband and I eat out like 4 to 6 times a week and mostly dinner. I don't cook much except for my son...my husband is vegetarian and i am not so I always end up eating junk because I don't feel like cooking meat or chicken just for me. I have been practicing chewing my food until mush...kind of hard but i think i can do it. But i always drink diet coke with every meal...even Breakfast and drink lots of Water with food. I wouldn't mind eating less...i would love it actually. I am just sooooooo scared...i want to live a normal life. Can i have a snack here and there? some junk food...i am not saying all the time, but sometimes? is there really some foods i can never have? I would appreciate any answers thanks

    Just starting!

Hi all! I'm two nutrition visits and a psych eval away from submitting for insurance approval! I'm super excited for this surgery and hopefully to have the outside match the inside! I'm really nervous about getting approval. My highest weight was 330 but then went vegetarian and was at 290 and had my gallbladder out and my surgeon suggested I look at WLS. I'm starting the pre-op diet early that consists of 1200 calories a day so I can lose more weight before the surgery. My surgeon said hopefully we'll have a July/August date. Fingers crossed! Looking forward to getting to know everyone and sharing this journey with you all.
  19. Amy I agree with not going out to eat. Just with my kids it's hard. I can't stop taking them out just cause my diet needs to change. This is my plan: Well 1st my grandpa died of weight related issues and died at home when my dad was 5. My other grandpa died of weight related issues before I was born. I don't want that for my kids. Don't want to die at home or while they are so young. Yes I want to lose weight to feel better and all but it's more about my kids. I am doing this for them. So I can be a better role model for them and be more active with them.. So back to my plan: When I take them out to eat I will bring a healthy meal for my self. I will take the dogs for longer walks and more often....list goes on. I will need to find healthier vegetarian meals as well. If anyone has any tips please offer them.

Dangerous Diet Tip #4: Salads: Your Weight Loss Staple.

As a vegetarian in my prep-op life I strived for 50 grams of protein on a 1200 - 1500 calorie a day diet. I never did much else with the micros except make sure I didn't go over MFP default settings. Sodium was the only one I manually set to a lower rate. I was thinking I would just go back to those levels once I reached maintenance. However I think I could manage 60 grams of protein. I knew too much protein was hard on the kidneys. That's part if the reason WLS patients need regular blood work.
  21. Hey Lissa, Yes, I am scheduled for surgery in 4 days. I hope I am like you and I won't want sweets like I do now, but I also hope I am able to get some foods down successfully. I guess I have the added issue of being a vegetarian. I am hoping tofu will be agreeable with me. Thanks!

    Protein HELP

Oh my gracious no beef or pork for a year??? I would have been struggling. I eat them a lot. I wonder what the reason is?? What about trying some plant based protein options. Besides beans what about vegetarian meat substitutes? This may be a good opportunity to broaden your food preferences as your taste buds can be a bit off. Things you didn’t like before may be more palatable & you may find you enjoy them more now. Worth a shot.

    Pre op foods

Hey! I'm just trying to get through my pre op diet right now. I'm limited to lean proteins and veggies at the moment in very small amounts. I'm doing meal preps and eating the same small protein meal everyday. I'm a vegetarian so I'm just sticking to tofu since it's low carb. The first one is tofu cooked in a tablespoon on coconut flour and garlic Zuchinni with a very small amount of tomatoes. The other one was sugar free barbecue tofu and onion green beans. Can I see your pre op meals? I'm interested to see how others ate on their pre op diets. Thanks! Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Vegan Or Vegetarian?

I call my self the part time vegetarian as I only eat meat once or twice a week. I eat a lot of fish, though. I found that when I was fully vegetarian I felt really crappy but after I incorporated a little meat back into my diet I steadied back out. I still like meat, but nowhere like I used to crave it. I actually prefer fruits, veggies, and fish more than anything now!

    Vegan Or Vegetarian?

I have an odd question.... Has anyone become vegan or vegetarian after the sleeve but was a carnivore pre-op? .....strange, I know.
