    Alcohol

I’m going to just put this right here....my doc told me a minimum a year. Doc said we now absorb alcohol at such an intense rate that we will be drunk way before we realize it. Doc also informed me bariatric patients are the new AA members. So for anyone that ever findS them selves in that predicament, thank God there is help.

    Daily Menus for Maintenance

Yesterday, Wednesday, Dec. 25 Maintenance : 5'2" / 1yr PO Sleeve / ??? lbs (last weight in 115.0 lbs on Dec 18th) ---------------------------------------- Lots of cookie and custard tart eating yesterday (which made up the vast majority of my total cals for the day, lol). It was spread out throughout the day, so I didn't get to the level of death. My current bowel situation kept me from eating more than I really wanted to overall, but I probably still ate too much, considering. Also for the first time in forever, I did not have a single drop of alcohol at a party/gathering where I was not designated driver. I'm still on prescription meds and on a regular schedule of Benedryl at the moment, so I figure I should lay off the booze.) ---------------------------------------- 12:00pm - salad w/ vinaigrette + 1/2 fl oz pumpkin seeds + 1.5 oz white cheddar + 2 oz grilled chicken + 1/3 chocolate chip cookie + 1/3 double fudge cookie + 1/3 white chocolate macadamia cookie 3:00pm - 2 oz honey glazed ham + 1/2 Portuguese custard tart 6:00pm to 2:00am - salad w/ vinaigrette + 1 oz grilled chicken + 1 oz honey glazed ham + 1 oz white cheddar + 1 tbsp tzatziki + 1 tbsp sliced almonds 1 short bread cookie 1/2 Portuguese custard tart 1/4 chocolate chip cookie 1/2 white chocolate macadamia cookie 3 oz roast pork w/ 2 tbsp gravy ---------------------------------------- Totals: 1717 cals - 96g Protein - 110g NET carbs - 96g fat

    Help!

Reading all current literature, it appears that your case is what typically happens about 50% of the time. There isn't a lot of data as to why, because everone is different, but logically it would seem many people go into "maintenance mode" (eating an amount to sustain current weight) long before they should. So first the weight stops coming off, then people slowly go above maintenance mode, and the weight starts creeping back up. Alcohol is pure calories, and mixing a drink is double calories. A lot of people for example drink things like vodka and cranberry and think it is "low cal". Nothing could be further from the truth. Bar cranberry juice is like drinking raw sugar. so might I recommend, stop drinking your calories, and then drop to 1000 cal total per day (like the diet you probably had which worked for you) and crush your weight back down over 2 months. Then watch your maintenance mode, to make sure it isn't to many cal's per day. Best of luck !

    Help!

Over what period did you gain the 15 ish lbs.? Are you tracking your food and drinking your water? Are you following your doctor's plan? 15 is significant enough that I would stop drinking again. Not so much for the empty calories in alcohol, but the mixers and accidental snacking that can go with it. Can you call your dietician?
  6. My surgery is in Northern California and Kaiser Fremont. My surgeon isn't requiring a liquid diet pre-surgery. He did make me lose weight before he would approve surgery, and I'm down almost 40 lbs since starting in July. I am going to try to be really good this week and avoid anything that might inflame the liver (no caffeine, alcohol, sweets, etc...) and my goal is to drink 100+ oz water today.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Yup. I think the reason I gained weight is that I eat bari-keto about 95% of the time so when I do have alcohol and other carbs, it causes a ton of fluid retention. Also, I’m prone to gain weight very easily and sadly bariatric surgery won’t fix it. Oh I’ll have a new set point, but I’m thinking I’ll always have to be extremely cautious or else I’ll get metabolically screwed again. So here’s something weird: I’m was able to take every one of those pounds off by the time I’d been back 4 days (which proves it was mostly fluid retention because it’s impossible to lose 4 pounds of actual fat in 4 days) Since then I’m up,down,up,down and I’m at 144., which is 6 pounds under GW. anyway, I took my measurements yesterday and my waist is down 0.5 inches more and my lower abs are down another 0.5 inches and my hips are down almost 0.75 more inches and I’m only 2 pounds lighter than I was at this time last month. Even if every single bit of that 2 pounds was pure fat, I don’t think it could take that much inches off of my body so things are still shifting. My size 8 pants (that I really just got into in early November) are stating to bag on me. Here is an example of that.

Weight loss is going very slow.

You and I have the same surgery date, 12/2! And I've lost about the same since surgery - it turns out there's a standard three-week stall. Check out the discussions under POST-operative weight loss surgery Q & A - they have been super helpful to me. I'm now stalled after three weeks having lost 12 lbs since surgery but only 2 lbs this past week, and 8 lbs two weeks prior. In a couple articles I read online it says the liver was shrunk for surgery but works to get back to a normal size afterward and it takes - yep - three weeks. Sometimes this stall can last several weeks but afterward there can be a sudden, large loss. Apparently there will be multiple stalls along the way. The articles also said not to go below 600 calories a day as that can backfire as the body tries to store what it can during what it perceives as starvation time. I know many don't believe in starvation mode and I'm not sure it isn't just a myth. But to stay healthy it makes sense that at least 600 good quality calories a day is a good idea no matter the reason. Also, the weight loss rate depends on several factors. Males lose faster, those who are much bigger initially lose faster, women after menopause slower (that's me), etc. I'm reminding myself that prior to surgery it took me six months to lose 11 lbs. on my own...and my pre-diabetes and non-alcoholic liver disease labs and my borderline high blood pressure had not improved at all, though my cholesterol levels did. Post-surgery all are now in the normal range! No diabetes looming for me (like my mother), thank goodness. Here's wishing us both good luck during the dreaded three-week stall. We'll get there! I'm greatly encouraged by some of the posts about the three-week stall under the Post-op Q & A where the stats show those posting lost all or most of there weight and reached their goals despite having stalls and slow weight loss overall.
  9. I’ve been reading a lot of posts, and most of the posts that mention gaining back the weight, also mention soda pop, and alcohol. I worked hard to get here. I will not be easy on myself. That’s how I got to this point in the first place. If I want to be healthy, I have to have self discipline. Nobody else is going to do this for me. Mike a rowing machine sounds great, if your gonna use it. How often do you use the bike? How often do you walk? What is your goal? I walk 5+ miles a day, and want to start swimming. Less pain on my hips.

Have any of you dumped on purpose?

Dumping syndrome is not just vomiting, yet everyone mentions that as the only form of dumping syndrome. Yes nausea and vomiting are two symptoms but so are cramps, diarrhea, flushing, dizziness and even rapid heart rate. it is rapid gastric emptying where food moves from your stomach to your small bowel to quickly. while yes suga is a big trigger it’s not always a trigger or the only one. I think most sugar is avoidable after bariatric surgery (there are sweet alternatives) and a low carb way of life is optimal. But other things can trigger dumping like some sugar Alcohols and foods a particular person is sensitive to. i avoid sugar and eat as low carb as much as possible. My nutritionist suggests less than 5 grams of sugar in a meal. as for dumping on purpose? Someone might do it if they are constipated. And it doesn’t mean cheating with sugar. Mostly it just happens and you might not know the trigger because it’s not always as simple as sugar. I also think doctors don’t explain dumping syndrome and what it is. My nutritionist did but not exactly the symptoms or that sugar isn’t the only trigger. I could be wrong but everyone seems to assume the OP wants to binge on sugar to see what happens. some folks can have a little bit of natural sweet food And complex carbs after bariatric surgery and do fine while others need to eat little to no sugar or carbs.

    Regain

I never thought I'd let myself get to goal (120) and then regain. But like so many others before me I know what I have to do to get back on track. As of now I am 170. 2 years out last month. January last year I was 125lbs and loving life. It has been an incredibly rough year, but I can't let that be an excuse. I'm no expert, but that's pretty significant regain I had the surgery for my health and now I'm getting back to where I was at the beginning at an astonishing rate. My food choices are terrible, I put alcohol and soda back in my "diet" and I went back to snacking. Ugh! Anyone else in a similar boat? What has helped you besides getting back to the basics? Is there anything in particular that has helped you the most with losing the regain? Any support and encouragement is welcome--I've been pretty down on myself lately. But I know I can get back to at least a healthy weight. This time I'll probably aim for 130-135. I came back here since this community was so incredibly supportive to me early post op. And for that I thank you all!

    Person of Size

Yes, I heard of it. Not sure what to think about it though since I'm no English native speaker and the slight nuances of a language are often difficult to get for a non-native speaker. If you're in doubt I would take the advice of the person having more experience with this issue. Personally I'm an advocate of the "people first" language. I absolutely abhor the use of expressions like "the obese", "a diabetic", "an alcoholic", "an addict" etc. and I can't understand why people would label themselves as such. Nobody would say e. g. that a person/a patient is "a lymphomic" when talking about a patient with a lymphoma. Sorry, I guess that was not very helpful.

    cheater cheater

Ugh, so sorry. I have had small cheats here and there and been fine which i view as good and bad. . I don't want to push it eating a large amount of sweets for fear of getting ill. Have you tried alcohol? Not that I am encouraging that, just curious if you tolerated it since you didn't tolerate the sweets. I haven't and don't plan to anytime soon but someday would like to enjoy a half a glass of wine twice a year. Are you back to eating your normal meals post surgery?
  14. I was down 14 pounds two weeks after surgery, and reached goal at 7 months (105 pounds lost). You are doing great! HOrmones can really mess with your mind, as well as the ketosis you are in. Ketosis can also result in high energy and feelings of euphoria, so that may be around the corner for you. I would guess that so many hormones are being released from the fat tissue and that is causing a lot of the depression. Hang in there. You will make it through this and you will be successful. You are already beating one of the most serious and difficult addictions known to humankind - alcohol, and you will beat this food addiction as well. Do you think you transferred the alcohol addiction to food? I hope you can get (or continue) some really good therapy to help you in this battle. We are standing with you!
  15. Hey everyone. My name is Claire and I'm 29, I recently had my lap-band removed and converted to the gastric sleeve. I had my surgery on 12/4/2019 so I'm almost 2 full weeks out. I've experienced a number of emotions since the surgery but most prevalent at the moment is depression. I feel so sad and so overwhelmed with how much weight I have to lose. After the lap-band I lost over 100lbs, my lowest weight was 154. I managed to gain over 200lbs within the last 5 years, where my alcoholism and addiction became increasingly problematic until I got sober 2 years ago. I'm impatient and I want the weight to "fall off" like everyone told me it would. All of the comments from friends and family like "you're going to lose weight so fast, you'll look so great" were nice before the surgery, but now I find myself feeling pressure and unsatisfied with my progress in 2 weeks. I've lost 22lbs since surgery. I'll have my 2 week post-op appointment tomorrow. I'm following my post-op diet and have been drinking plenty of water, protein shakes, some yogurt, and some thinned soups. I eat less than 400 calories a day. Logically, I know that 22lbs in 2 weeks is great but I still feel so depressed and discouraged. I'm not sure what's going on with me. I know I have to make lifestyle changes to lose weight and keep it off, I've done it before and I know I can do it again but for whatever reason my brain is telling me that I'm going to fail this time. It's scary. Just looking for some support or advice from others. Thanks, Claire
  16. If you are going to drink wine, I would try it at home first. Many people report that the amount of alcohol it takes before they are drunk is way lower than before WLS. I'd hate for you to get sloshed on a half a glass of wine and fall overboard!😁 Also be careful about the sugar content of your wine, you don't want to get dumping syndrome from it. You should stick to the drier wines. As far as the foods, by six months you shouldn't have any eating restrictions other than just small amounts. You should stay away from really fatty foods as you may dump from that--it'd definitely pass on the foie gras! Bon appetit!

    4 Year Update

Thanks. Just passed the 2 year mark myself, huge changes and still have very similar eating habits to 1 year post (4 oz of protein for a meal). Biggest challenge for me and the only way I've been able to gain wait is alcohol so have to be careful of that. No issues with overeating, if I even approach it I'm in great pain and it serves as a potent reminder so I'm very very careful still. Awesome to hear how well you're doing further out and hope I'm doing just as well. I'm still at goal, super active and loving being thin!
  18. I think that packaged processed food have their place. Some people need a crutch, especially in the early days. They might not cook or know how to cook. They may only eat a spoonful or two of something. So it feels like it's not even worth it to cook something real, whole foods. Right? Some people need a fix (healthi-er) alternative to their former high crap addiction. We're not all in the same place on the continuum: purist to hedonist. I'm purist about some things (healthy/bad fats and sugar), but not so much in other areas (I use some premade sauces and marinades and gravies cuz of convenience, taste, few calories, few carbs and use some sugar alcohols.) The most I can claim is that I'm a mid-hedonist working toward making better choices. So in those situations, I think the convenience of precooked meals, soups, stews, etc are a good solution. And I think BP is a good store. (I wasn't aware of the restock fee or the taste test guarantee.) I order things like my Celebrate vitamins and treats like Twin Peaks Protein Puffs + Quest Protein Chips/Tortillas + Zeroodles + Epic Pork Rinds, that kind of stuff. I think their prices are fair and they have good customer service. Just my 2 cents. Sorry for your experience. Daily Menus for Maintenance

First year out, I didn’t drink alcohol. The empty calories were not worth stalling or stopping my weight loss. I still have a great time. My friends use me as the designated driver. I get free food and nonalcoholic drinks. After goal, I started drinking occasionally. I am a total light weight after surgery. It's not pretty when I go over two glasses of wine. I can’t keep it classy.

Honestly, this will be unpopular but if you start drinking during WLM, you risk NEVER reaching your goal. You are playing with fire. And did you REALLY have surgery and think you wouldn't have to change your behaviors with the things that got you MO in the first place? WL is very hard on the liver and drinking on top of it adds another insult to an already at risk and taxed organ. I do drink now. And I did drink rarely and minimally during WLM. But when I did, I almost always saw a loss of 4 days of active weight loss. And frankly, most can't afford to squander their honeymoon period. Drinking alcohol is one of the leading contributors to weight regain.

Good to know. I feel you can almost substitute any food with something else. But if I go out for drinks there is no alcohol or carbonated beverages so idea of just drinking water or Virgin Mary doesn’t cut it.

    Daily Menus for Maintenance

LOL, yes, I have no real issues with alcohol . I had my first (partial) drink at around 1-2 months. After that, only on special occasions during weight loss phase. Once I got into maintenance, I drink more often (mostly when I'm out or have company over, which is probably once or twice every couple weeks...oh and of course when on vacation!) I don't drink as much as pre-op as I get drunk much faster on much less (but on the flip side, I also sober up much faster). Now, my team also told me to try to stay away from alcohol in general, but the nutritionist only shook her head when I told her what and how much I was drinking, and my surgeon wasn't/isn't concerned at all. Check with your team, and let them know what you are doing whatever you decide... P.S. I also mostly drink dry wines and spirits/distilled alcohol (lower carb content), and I very rarely use full-sugar mixers in anything.

You can drink all that alcohol? I’m only 2.5 months out & only thing I will miss down the road is alcohol. My surgeon told me not to have for at least year & then minimal.
  24. Bastian

    Hey All,

why can't you use alcohol gel?
  25. Totally hear ya on the iron sleeve. Lol, I was eating salad within 4 weeks PO. Salad and loads of it. SMH. Anyway... here is what Friday looked like for me (disclaimer: it was vacation and we went to a really cool 3 house tour cocktail party that lasted for 3 hours) Friday am: no breakfast. Drank about 16 oz water to rehydrate from shenanigans from Thursday night. Friday lunch: 3-4 bites fried chicken, 1/2 cup slaw, 1/2 cup collard greens at a museum cafe. Friday 4:30-5:30pm. 1 large glass Chardonnay. Friday 5:45-8pm: spiked apple cider, gimlet, 1 dark and stormy (each house had a 1 cocktail/person limit) and some cheese, crackers, hard cured deli meats, 1/2 ginger snap, 1/3 chocolate brownie spread out between the different venues. Skipped the veggie platter as I judged it would take up too much room that could be used to hold alcohol. 🤣🤣 Friday night 8:30-10pm: 2 more glasses Chardonnay in our Airbnb, then bed. Zero nausea. Zero dumping. Zero hangover. Kind of scary, TBH, but I made sure that I ate small on the food bc there was no way I wanted to curb the beverages. Most days I didn’t even try to eat bf 11am though and my sleeve is still as “tight” as ever in the morning.
