    Worried I Will Not Lose Enough Weight

    I lost no where NEAR 50% of my excess weight in three months. That is bizarre - I imagine very few of us have lost that quickly. I'm not sure I understand your chart, but most of us lose somewhere in the 15-25 lb range the first month, then 10 lbs (give or take) for a few months, and then it drops...and drops...and drops. By the end (I finally stopped losing weight in month 20), I was losing like 2 lbs a month. EDIT - never mind - I get it now. So you've lost about 30 lbs in two months? That's absolutely normal. I started out heavier than you, and I'd lost 29 lbs by then. Just stick to your plan and the weight will come off. I ended up losing over 200 lbs.
  2. My excess weight distribution is mainly on my trunk from the neck down and only radiating down a few inches on my upper arms and legs. My shoulders had become heavily padded including the dreaded "buffalo hump". Although I only lost 6.5# during the one week pre-op and an additional 18# since surgery on 3/3/23, I have noticed substantial changes. I have lost (don't want to find it) the buffalo hump and my neck has gotten longer (optically). I have started losing the "football pads" off my shoulders, revealing the promise of regaining my former graceful neck which has been encased in shoulder fat for 10 years.

    May 2023 surgeries

    May 2nd here. On day 4 of optifast and water and having a really hard time stomaching it because of the metallic taste in my mouth after I drink it. Not really having the "hunger" feelings like days 1-3 but do have an "empty" feeling. Hard to explain. 10 pounds down and the only place I can tell is in my fingers... HaHa

    Is this enough?

    I agree with the others - exercise only accounts for about 10% of weight loss (although it's great for your health!). It seems to be more effective once you hit maintenance (research shows this - I'm currently taking a graduate level nutrition class on obesity and weight loss). most people are encouraged to get at least 150 minutes a week of exercise for health - more for weight loss/maintenance (up to 300-ish hours). Strength training 2x a week, cardio three or more times a week, so you're doing great there. But you also need to have a routine that you like and are likely to continue long term. Your routine sounds fine - but are you OK with it? You don't need to add to it unless you really want to - unless you want to add some variety to keep it interesting. For my cardio, I rotate walking, swimming, water aerobics, biking (when the weather cooperates), and cardio dancing (such as Zumba). I also do walking videos (youtube) a lot in the winter (like "Walk Away the Pounds"). I need the variety since I'm susceptible to "fitness burnout"...

    Is this enough?

    How long is a piece of string? Only you know if it is too much & is restricting/limiting you in any way (health, lifestyle, etc.) or if the amount you’re doing is sustainable. Exercise only accounts for about 10% of any weight you’re to lose. Want to lose 50lbs - exercise will contribute to the loss of approx 5 of those pounds. Of course there are many other benefits to exercising: fitness, muscle strength, toning, flexibility, general well being (mental & physical), etc. So how much would benefit you best depends upon what you want to achieve. I’m a non exerciser & I lost all my weight & more. About a year ago I began doing some stretches, resistance bands & some sit-ups. I do them over 4 short sessions during the day for a total of 20-25minutes duration (exercise snacking). I do it more to support my back, flexibility & a little toning of my arms & legs. I’d only burn about 30 calories. Lol!

    Help 😞

    Hey everyone, I had my sx gastric sleeve 2/20 and I’m almost 10 weeks out. It’s been complications since surgery and I don’t know what else to do neither do the doctors. I have sever pains in my chest and feels like a ball sitting in my throat. I did a second surgery of fixing hiatal hernia and I’m 2 weeks out from this. I been in and out the hospital I can’t eat or keep food down. When I do eat food the pain of twisting and burning the moment food touches my stomach. I throw up a ball of mucus. I can’t even take oral medications and I’m at lost and regret if everything in life after this surgery. Anyone can give me pointers? Anyone been through this? I cry everyday I can’t eat or drink anything besides water. The doctor last told me it’s in my head? Like what kinda comment is that my surgeon doesn’t even respond a doctor in Mexico who is very popular in social media and 2 my friends got their surgeries there but not going through what I’m going through… help 😭

    Pain When Eating - NOT Stomach Pain

    Update! I am one month and three weeks post-op, and I've had some dramatic improvements. Chewing thoroughly has helped the most with the pain, though some foods still do not go down easy (smoked sausage, heavily fried foods, etc.), but not a whole lot. I got sick once when I ate some asparagus and tomatoes (cooked), but I think I ate them too quickly. It was not very bad, but it was unpleasant, as getting sick always is. I also had blood tests, and all of my numbers went down! I'm most excited for my cholesterol, as it's 185 and was over 200 previously. Most days, I start with a protein shake for breakfast, then a higher protein pasta with lots of fiber (handfuls of spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, etc.), and some pre-cooked meat for lunch. Lean Cuisine protein meals are perfect sizes for me right now, though I don't finish them all. I don't want to overly rely on frozen food, but on the days I don't feel like eating what I cooked, it's a nice option to have. Dinner is usually soup - Proper Good is my favorite, made with lots of bone broth for extra protein, or Amy's soups. Snacks include mini Babybel cheeses, protein puddings, Greek yogurt, and Braniac brain bars. I have PCOS, so I try to eat to balance my hormones with an emphasis on protein and a healthy amount of good fats and fiber. I have lost 35 pounds so far, and I can't tell a difference yet physically, but my energy levels are SO MUCH BETTER. I don't feel like I'm constantly fatigued, and I've been able to do loads of spring cleaning after a full work day. I was cleared to start resistance training, so in addition to walking for 30 minutes 5x a week, I'm incorporating 2-3x a week of resistance workouts. They're small right now, and not very intense (10 minutes tops), but I like to think it'll still benefit me. 😅 Thank you to everyone who's been replying to me. I really appreciate it!

    This is my routine at the gym (with a trainer): Monday: Warm Up - 5 min walk, leg swings, arm pulls with a resistance band, knee raises, butt kicks Arm Day - (30 minutes or so) Chest Press - determine weight - 3 sets of 10 Tricep Kickbacks - 3 sets of 10 bicep curls - 3 sets of 10 side lateral raises - 3 sets of 10 Bent over row - 3 sets of 10 push ups - 3 sets of 10 Wednesday: Warm Up - 5 min walk, leg swings, arm pulls with a resistance band, knee raises, butt kicks Leg Day- (30 minutes or so) Squats with weights - 3 sets of 10 Step ups with weights - 3 sets of 10 Leg Press - determine weight - 3 sets of 10 Kettlebell swings - 3 sets of 10 Lunges - 3 sets of 10 I then do cardio 3-4 days a week.

    Yep, mine is 19 days away, you're even closer. So exciting! Pre op is fun huh? I have to do 28 days so I'm well into it now. I'm finding it not so bad but I'm definitely looking forward to eating a wider variety again after surgery.

    Getting gastric sleeve tomorrow

    I had Lap-Band 20 years ago. I then had the removal of my Lap-Band and revision to Gastric Bypass in March 2018 and Gastric Bypass reversal due to a lower bowel blockage in June 2019. I regret getting the Lap-Band and using a surgeon for my Bypass that wasn't the greatest (to be kind.) Thankfully, I've kept almost all my extra weight off, and my health is great.

    Pre-op diet

    It does get a bit easier after day 4 or so. Your body adjusts, headaches ease. The good part is the weight loss. Mine was 10lbs in 10 days. I’m sure yours will be good with the longer 14 days. Try finding distractions….

    1 year after Sleeve surgery...

    Congratulations @liveaboard15. How great about your cholesterol levels too. Keep it up You never know how much more you’ll achieve. Don’t worry too much about your bilirubin levels yet especially while you are still losing. Almost 4 years out mine is still high but we discovered Gilbert’s Syndrome runs in the family & as I experienced many of the symptoms it’s likely I have that & always did just didn’t know it. Gilbert’s is quite common. Not debilitating or limiting in any way. My vitamin D levels drop in winter (when I hibernate) so I use a Vitamin D & K mouth spray (love it - no pills to swallow - yay!) late autumn to early spring. Yep, exercising only accounts for about 10% of the weight you are to lose. Of course there are other benefits but the choice is yours. I’m not an exerciser & I still lost all my weight & more & have basically maintained. I do some stretches, use some resistance bands & some sit ups (I hate them but they’re good for the lower back) over about 4 sessions of 5-10mins each day. Would burn maybe 30 calories. I only do this to help with my back & for a little toning.

    1 year after Sleeve surgery...

    congrats! You've done very well! And you could still lose weight - albeit very slowly at this point. I continued losing until I was 20 months out. re: exercise, they say losing weight is 90% food-related, and only 10% exercise-related, so you may have lost a bit more, but probably not much. I know people who've almost never exercised and still lost a ton of weight after WLS. That said - exercise is great for your health and also helps you maintain your loss once you reach your goal - but as far as active losing, it only plays a small part.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    So, I'm 2/3 of the way through my self imposed 90 day challenge to lose what I could lose before my next Dr appointment. In the first 30 days, I lost 10 lbs. In the second 30 days I gained about 4. Not great. However, here is my observation... On day 25, I began taking some supplements to try to stop muscle loss. I began taking Creatine, Carnitine and Leucine along with my protein shakes. In the last 30 days, I have gotten stronger at the gym, my workouts have been able to be more intense and my pant size is getting looser... depending on the brand and pant style cut, I'm between a 38 and even a 36!... I just bought a pair of shorts on Friday that are size 36... I have no idea when I did that last. So, in 28 days, I see my Dr again. At this point, I hope I can break into the upper 240's by then, but it's going to be tough. It's a far cry from my goal of 236, but I'm still working.

    Michigan Medicaid

    I don't know what to tell you friend. I certainly can't go back in time and tell them I need to complete 6 more months, even if I wanted to. Nor do I know why the agent I spoke with would tell me wrong. I know for a fact that in 2017 I switched from Molina MEDICAID to Blue Cross Complete MEDICAID because Molina require 12 but BCBSM require only 6. I was too poor for the commercial if either. If anyone cares to follow my posts, I had my surgery in February 2019 and promise I did NOT wait 12 month. I would have. Especially now that I've come to appreciate so much more about myself because of my journey. I didn't have however. If you do, don't worry about it! You'll do wonderfully, and you can only come out stronger having done more prep!

    RNY surgery question

    I haven't heard that, but who knows? It might be true. I know bypassers are susceptible to vitamin deficiencies, though, because of the malabsorption. That's why it's critical for us to keep on top of our supplements - the consequences of slacking off are more severe for us than they are for sleevers. EDITED TO ADD: I'm not really sure about fasting in general, though. I know the malabsorption the first few months is super strong - you malasorb calories in addition to nutrients. Unfortunately, the malabsorption of calories seems to go away after a year or two - whereas the malabsorption of nutrients stays. I had a 20 lb regain in year 3 (which is unfortunately very common - usually 10-20 lbs), and I currently struggle to keep my weight where it is, so the part of fasting where you lose weight isn't true - or at least not for me. But maybe he meant for the first year or two? Or was referring specifically to nutrients ? Not sure.
  23. I'm having the gastric sleeve done on 5/10. I bought some Protein2o water, several flavors of protein shakes that I sampled, sugar-free popsicles, and a case of chicken broth. I was told to get 64ozs of water and to drink twice as much water as my coffee cup. Does protein water (not shakes) count towards water intake?
  24. Hi all, i am currently 15 days post op and am transitioning into my puréed stage of food. Any tips for puréed stage and being at work? i go back to work on the 25th and i work in Daycare/Childcare so a very attentive job. My surgeon has advised i need to wait 30 minutes to drink water and wait 10 minutes if i’ve had water to eat before hand. As i work this job it’s sort of hard. Any tips on what foods you guys ate im really struggling on this. I made a mushroom soup and puréed it and had a teaspoon of it and (TMI!!) regurgitated as the texture was awful. Please help me 🫶🏼

    New Future Begins Tomorrow

    Hi All! I have been mostly quiet the past two weeks, but I wanted to give a quick update since a few of you asked. [emoji846] So far, I'm healing well (18 days post op). There is still a fair amount of pain on the left side and where the nerves were cut. It has been a rougher recovery than I expected. I've had two c-sections, and I have to say this recovery ranks up there, possibly harder. Lol. I tire pretty easily, but I'm getting around better. Still can't lay on my side to sleep for very long, but it will get there. I'm doing well with getting at least 60 grams of protein. Still struggling with fluids, getting about 48 oz. I'm trying to push that, but it seems I'm always behind. Lol. I start back to work tomorrow, and I'm worried about the fatigue and not being mentally sharp. I guess all I can do is let my manager and co-workers know upfront. I'm very fortunate to be working from home, so at least I can rest if needed. I'm down 20 lbs (10 lbs lost in pre-op, 10 lbs since surgery date). I'm very happy with that progress. Already back to onederland!! I'm a lower BMI patient and understand my results may take time. I'm still shocked by how quickly my body is changing! I feel or notice something different almost every day. I hope all of you are doing well and hanging in there!
