    Feeling Sick

According to the internet: Nausea and vomiting are the most common complaints after bariatric surgery, and they are typically associated with inappropriate diet and noncompliance with a gastroplasty diet (ie, eat undisturbed, chew meticulously, never drink with meals, and wait 2 hours before drinking after solid food is consumed). If these symptoms are associated with epigastric pain, significant dehydration, or not explained by dietary indiscretions, an alternative diagnosis must be explored. One of the most common complications causing nausea and vomiting in gastric bypass patients is anastomotic ulcers, with and without stomal stenosis. Ulceration or stenosis at the gastrojejunostomy of the gastric bypass has a reported incidence of 3% to 20%. Although no unifying explanation for the etiology of anastomotic ulcers exists, most experts agree that the pathogenesis is likely multifactorial. These ulcers are thought to be due to a combination of preserved acid secretion in the pouch, tension from the Roux limb, ischemia from the operation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, and perhaps Helicobacter pylori infection. Evidence suggests that little acid is secreted in the gastric bypass pouch; however, staple line dehiscence may lead to excessive acid bathing of the anastomosis. Treatment for both marginal ulcers and stomal ulcers should include avoidance of NSAIDs, antisecretory therapy with proton-pump inhibitors, and/or sucralfate. In addition, H pylori infection should be identified and treated, if present. Carafate is a sucralfate. I was on it for a while after surgery. My surgeon had prescribed taking Omeprazole (over the counter Prilosec) for the first year after surgery to give my stomach a chance to heal properly. Omeprazole is a proton-pump inhibitor. So this might be of help to you. Check with your doctor. Also avoid any aspirin or products that contain aspirin or other NSAIDs. And make sure that you were tested for H Pylori infection. A high percentage of individuals have this infection and generally don't even know it until it shows up with a vengeance after bariatric surgery.
  3. Had surgery 2/22 and so far I'm doing awesome with staying hydrated, bowel movements, gas, walking, pretty much everything except getting protein in! I've found that I tend to get nauseous with the few powders I have on hand (isopure zero carb, isopure clear, & any bariatric fusion) I can seem to tolerate one milk based protein premade shake I picked up yesterday as well as plain low fat milk. However the stats aren't the greatest on the shake and I can't get enough in a day... any suggestions to help with this? I plan on adding unflavored protein powder to my purées when I start them on 3/2, but till then I'm not quite sure what to do... :/

I could be your bariatric god-granny I also have fibromyalgia, Migraines, lymphedema in both legs, struggling with mild depression-- a good portion is eating myself up emotionally about not getting surgery, so anxiety &, used to have panic attacks. Otherwise I'm more than healthy, enough for surgery-- PCP says I'm a 40-45 year old trapped in a 72 year old shell. Low BP, low cholesterol, good heart, passable lungs and although I am an adult child of 2 diabetics ,no diabetes. He admits my cholesterol is lower than his and he's maybe mid40s.I have 2 plastic shoeboxes of pills, but right now I'm taking antibiotic for sinusitis, Wellbutrin, Ditropan , Zyrtec and a over50 Multivitamin. That's all currently. The Wellbutrin is to keep my anxious depression down prior to surgery, not a real high dosage. I'm not suicidal, more like I don't care to live. Does that make sense?, but do myself in? Nope I feel some days like I'd even screw that up. Low self esteem can come calling.for me. I try to reach out to others on Bariatric Pal and It helps me from crawling back into my safe turtle shell of isolation. Yeah ever this old cowgirl gets the blues. 6. Well when do YOU think you'll be visiting the Slice and,Dice parlor? Commonly known as the operating room. I'm guessing March 14-20 but it's obvious in my own life I'm p*** poor about predictions. Look at my wavy road to,my RnY, I may take a bowie knife, a lighted makeup mirror and some 30 test fishing line and perform my,own surgery. Oh yeah I've got John's (the late lamented) big Swingline stapler in the bedroom next to the computer. Yeah I've got a terabyte+ computer. Tomkitten has operating custody, he says I keyboard too rough. Put his hands on his hips and proclaimed"Mom Its not an old Underwood Upright!" He wants to do it fine, at least I don't get into trouble, like Proud Grammy. Alex Brecher, Spectrum and Ms P.G. are going to end up,in a 3way conference call one of these days, So I use my smartphone for Bariatric Pal.l am but a simple soul when it comes to the internet. Stuck ... what to do

Hello, I have my two-week post-op appointment with my doctor today. Everything has been going well, so he suggested I move on to the pureed stage with a scrambled egg tonight. I was so excited! I whipped up an egg with plenty of chicken bone broth, cooked it, and pureed it to the appropriate consistency. It was very moist - in fact, it really couldn't be chewed, it was very liquified. So I measured 1/4 cup and started to eat my egg very slowly with an extremely small spoon given to me by my bariatric nutritionist. I took my time - putting my spoon down often and taking 30 minutes to eat. My doctor told me to eat until I felt full - but I really didn't feel full. But...I have food stuck in my throat now. It's been stuck for a few hours, and it's freaking me out. I really didn't feel full while I was eating. Has anyone else experienced this - and does it go away? Thank you...
  8. That's interesting, because the gal I talked to today said it was a laparoscopic abdominal bariatric surgery. It's like, okay, well, that could be any surgery. [emoji45][emoji4] Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Not taking my vitamins

Always trust the medical professionals on health issues... I'm not a Dr. I'm not recommending anything. Some do fine without bariatric vitamins. (They supplement with over the counter). others have malabsorption issues that cause deficiency. Health risk Study below. https://www.hindawi.com/journals/jobe/2012/608534/

I'm kinda a similar size, one difference I've drug this tired body for 72 years. Now I've,had my " come to Jesus" moment last fall when my PCP gave me a diet drug and instead of losing weight I gained 30lbs. That was a high of 355, i enrolled in a bariatric program, did all the prerequirements they or my insurances asked for. Waited and waited to be given a surgery date. Imagine my shock when I was informed a committee had met and none of the surgeons in the practice wished to perform my surgery. So I will be transferring to one,of the othe other 2 programs in Center of Excellence accreditated hospitals in Columbus Ohio. I attend a seminar at #1 on March 9th, if I feel it doesn't fulfill my plans I will attend one at#2 the, morning of March 10th. This is backwards of the way things occur, I'm beginning,to think I'm more special than I thought. I am planning a RnY as I have both sleep apnea and GERD, I have lowered my weight to 323 from last fall but haven't been able to lose more. I am 5ft8in, have had arthritis since i was 25 and have had 2 knee replacements. I really want and feel I need this surgery or I'd just give up at this point. Are you anywhere near Kakaskia? I remember from history that was Illinois first capital. Anyway I am very glad to know you and I hope we will become friends. If you have any questions please ask, I've done a lot of research on WLS and lived a good long time. I think by now I can talk on most any subject. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

    Need real answers

I had the sleeve, and I have loved it. My understanding is that if you have gastric reflux or indigestion issues, the sleeve might not be for you. Also, if you have emotional eating issues, the bypass may lead to more success. I did not have any nausea issues. Ever. My eating plan through Emory Hospital in Atlanta was aggressive. We were eating solids (pureed) within a few days, and it never bothered me. I think I was chewing my food within 10 days of surgery, and could eat just about anything by then. I was back to work in less than a week. I was actually out house hunting within a few days, but I had already taken the week. I could have gone back by the Monday after my Wednesday surgery. This site was a huge help, but there are plenty of great articles on the subject. Get in with a good bariatric program, and they will give you all of the information you need, as well. Good luck.
  12. Guess what, I'm a trifle sick and congested, went to PCP yesterday, he told me to take a temporary CPAP holiday as it was aggravating my sinuses temporarily. I could not sleep, finally drifted off at 4AM back up at 6:30 to tinkle. So I spent most most of the night on my tablet or lurking and texting on Bariatric Pal. Insurance

I actually looked up my insurance company's guidelines for bariatric surgery/ obesity surgery online and read them so I didn't have to rely on the or my physician. You can also call but if you do ask them if they have their guidelines posted online and ask how to find them. Here are the guidelines for Aetna, as an FYI only http://www.aetna.com/cpb/medical/data/100_199/0157.html

    Revision to 2006 RNY

Hi Nickie- Belowis everything they identify as experimental or investigational per their policy bulletin. Here is the link to the original document: http://www.aetna.com/cpb/medical/data/100_199/0157.html It looks like band over bypass is on the list. My surgeon had suggested as one of three options to do an endoscopic suturing procedure. He said less risk, less cost, no hospital time but the results were also questionable and it had to be either/or. So if the endoscopic option didn't work, then I couldn't go back and do the laprascropic procedure later. Good news, I found out surgery was approved. Now I just need to decide whether to move forward or not. He was very keen on making sure I understand the increased risk and decreased opportunity for weight loss outcomes. Hence my full court press with counseling and weight loss meds as adjuncts. Let me know how yours turns out!!Experimental and Investigational Bariatric Surgical Procedures: AspireAssist aspiration therapy “Band over bypass” or LASGB revision of prior Roux-en-Y gastric bypass "Band over sleeve" or LASGB revision of prior sleeve gastrectomy Bariatric surgery as a treatment for idiopathic intracranial hypertension Bariatric surgery as a treatment for infertility Bariatric surgery as a treatment for type-2 diabetes in persons with a BMI less than 35 Conversion of sleeve gastrectomy to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass as a treatment of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) Gastric bypass as a treatment for gastroparesis Gastroplasty, more commonly known as “stomach stapling” (see below for clarification from vertical band gastroplasty) Laparoscopic gastric plication (also known as laparoscopic greater curvature plication [LGCP]), with or without gastric banding LASGB, RYGB, and BPD/DS procedures not meeting the medical necessity criteria above Liposuction (suction-assisted lipectomy; ultrasonic assisted liposuction) Loop gastric bypass Mini gastric bypass Natural orifice transoral endoscopic surgery (NOTES) techniques for bariatric surgery including, but may not be limited to, the following: Gastrointestinal liners (endoscopic duodenal-jejunal bypass, endoscopic gastrointestinal bypass devices; e.g., EndoBarrier and the ValenTx Endo Bypass System); or Intragastric balloon (e.g., the ReShape Integrated Dual Balloon System); or Restorative obesity surgery, endoluminal (ROSE) procedure for the treatment of weight regain after gastric bypass surgery; or Transoral gastroplasty (TG) (vertical sutured gastroplasty; endoluminal vertical gastroplasty; endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty); or Use of any endoscopic closure device (Over the Scope clip [OTSC] system set, Apollo OverStitch endoscopic suturing system, StomaphyX endoluminal fastener and delivery system) in conjunction with NOTES; Open adjustable gastric banding Prophylactic mesh placement for prevention of incisional hernia after open bariatric surgery Roux-en-Y gastric bypass as a treatment for gastroesophageal reflux in non-obese persons Sclerotherapy for the treatment of dilated gastrojejunostomy following bariatric surgery Silastic ring vertical gastric bypass (Fobi pouch) Vagus nerve blocking (e.g., the VBLOC device, also known as the Maestro Implant or the Maestro Rechargeable System) VBG, except in limited circumstances noted above.

    New and Scared

I would say think of it like this. You have procrastinated for so long. And through out that time procrastinating time, you couldve alrradu had sirgery, recovered, lost the weight, tightened skined by going to the gym AND probably splurged yourself to a tummy tuck if it really bothers. But the best thing of all..you would've been not carrying all of the diabetes and Pecos and other issues and concerns you may have regarding your health. I personally delayed my sleeve 2 years just because i wanted to prove my self that i could do it with out surgery. Guess what? 2 years passed and i gained more than what i lost. I called it a day and schedule my visit with bariatric provider. Now 6 days after surgery, here i am, I've already lost 15lbs. I honestly think you CAN do it. Just put you mind and soul into it. Good luck!! Sent from my SM-G935T using BariatricPal mobile app

    Anxiety before surgery

Mine was equally a duh. Had started in August 2015, job terminated in January 2016, lost my insurance, to have COBRA'd over would have taken 7/8th of my Social Security monthly pension. So I didn't persue it any further. I was recently informed when I changed insurances the new one had fewer requirements, they had already approved me and were only waiting for me to supply the new numbers and a surgery date could be assigned. I surely would have gone forward had they called in 2016. I started over again last fall, as my previous certifications were all 1.5 to 2 years old, I had to do a fresh set, did it all, now they have refused to go forward, all their idea not mine. Now I will enroll in another bariatric plan, all my paperwork and charts will transfer but if plan #2 has further requirements then I'll have more to do. Nobody better say I'm uncommitted or non compliant. I feel like I've done everything short of crawling across broken glass to achieve this goal. I'm old, tired and fat, the fat part at least I can change.I can't be someone else but I can be the best ME possible. And that better be enough for everybody. Amen. 19. My group did full liquid in two phases. Phase one was just protein drinks and clear liquids. We did this until we hit seven days. Then, at one week out, we added the yogurt, pudding and cream soups. As far as I can tell....bariatric surgeons have very little consistency on this stuff. Lots of different ideas out there. My personal advice? Do what you feel up to that you have permission to do. Take it slow. If you have nausea, slow up, drink clear fluids and protein drink for a while longer and give it time.

  21. Yeah, this is why I am in the bariatric closet! I don’t need people getting all judgmental. Ugh.
  22. That was a typo...I actually lost 36 pounds before surgery. My Bad. I love my group, and I believe in the research they're doing. I did a lot of looking around to find the right folks for me...because I knew I didn't want to do keto diet, and so many bariatric groups ban carbs. (No offense to those who benefit from keto...I know you're out there...it's just not for me) One cool thing about going with a major research hospital is that they serve a very diverse population....there are many patients at my clinic who are vegan, Kosher, Halal...folks from all over the world with all sorts of eating traditions. So, there's a great deal of care and flexibility put into customizing nutrition for each patient. Starvation is a serious factor in stalls. The body has a multitude of evolutionary defense mechanisms in place to protect us from famines, bad hunting seasons, stressful times of healing. There are hormones and enzymes...set point triggers that can save our butts in times of hardship and survival....but wreak havoc on dieting efforts! it's maddening. All of this said....it's very hard to work with a group when you're not following their advice. I don't think discussing variances from the program is ever a bad thing....but ultimately, you need to be working together with common goal with a common philosophy.

    Buddies/Mentors

Sad story, check out my post Change Your Hospital, but I will not let this thwart me from my goal. Basically i got kicked to the curb by Mount Carmel, their 3 surgeons unexpectedly decided to not perform my surgery. The excuse I was given I do not accept. I have reapplied, 3 different bariatric programs, 1) a seminar on March 9th 2 )a seminar on March,10th 3) an appointment with an intake nurse April,10th . Of the 3 at this point I am leaning towards program #1 but will hear them all out and make a rational informed decision. My paperwork will all be transferred to the program of my choice, I did make sure of that. I will land upright, I will have my surgery and I will make those sons of Seabiscuit the horse eat their words. Under this meek mild Puddycat lies the heart of a lithe strong puma , golden and sleek. I will roar in victory when my day comes!! Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app
