    A Sad Milestone

Pookeyism, I am sure you're right. And there is no doubt in my mind that it may actually be a problem. Before surgery I was addicted to food, and alcohol. After the surgery when I physically couldnt eat as much as I wanted to, I replaced that addiction with something I could control, which was sex. And now, its back to food and alcohol. My BF doesnt even know that I had this surgery, and Im too ashamed to tell him that I have failed miserably. I used to drink for special occasions, now I drink just cause I want to. It's horrible, I know, but I am too ashamed to "get help".

"Drink whenever I can"...that is alot of calories, possibly the 20 lbs or so you gained. Perhaps it is time to see if you have replaced food with alcohol, and get some real help...and discuss this with your partner.

    A Sad Milestone

Less than a year ago, my Sister threw me a "Fruit and Veggie Platter Party" to Celebrate me getting under 200 pounds. I got down to about 184? Today...I went over 200 again. I have no one to blame but myself. I am between jobs, I am in love, we eat out a lot together, I HAAAAAAATE working out, I drink alcohol as often as I possibly can, and I eat carbs all day, Not sure why I am doing this to myself, but I dont know how to stop. Usually I just go back to the way I felt when I was first sleeved, how I was so busy and never hungry that sometimes 2 or more days would pass before I realized that I hadnt eaten. I usually lose at least 6 pounds by not eating at all for a day or 2. But I dont want to do that. I am actually HUNGRY all the time. My stomach growls. I feel weak and tired. Has anyone here gained weight, got your Sh*t together and been able to lose again? Or am I screwed? I wasted my chance.

    Bread Question

this may sound dumb, but here goes. . .when i was about 3 months out, i was still really careful in everything i attempted to eat. . so when my mom and her friend came to visit me for a week, what i did instead of "joining in" with the celebrations (I hadn't seen my mom in over 7 years) I busied myself catering to them. . . when it was time to eat, i made myself a very very small plate and took only protein, When my mom started in on me, I right away would get up and offer her stuff, more coffee, some cake? How about some alcohol? Lets go sit on the patio, You 2 visit, let me stack the dishwasher. . . I was so busy with myself that i never once missed the celebration with food and it did me good. . .I understand you want to celebrate your daughters b/day but really there will be one every year. . . it's not like you have to do it this year right? Busy yourself by fussing around her. . cater to her. . But it's your choice, you make the choices for yourself. . .just be careful cause at 31/2 weeks. . . well ask yourself, is the tummy REALLY healed up good enough to prevent a possible leak??????? good luck!
  5. Journey2healthy- just out of curiousity, what DID you expect from this surgery food wise ?? your dr should of talked to you about what to eat and what you might have trouble with , also maybe some paperwork with food info on it. everybodys different when it comes to what they can tolerate. i can eat anything just in small amounts, but 3 weeks ago i had 3 sips of an alcoholic drink and had a bad reaction. Everybodys different, so check with your dr and a nutrionist to see what you should be doing. Good luck !

    Sept 2011 bandsters

I've had four fills and still get stuck, but I think I've figured out why. I now can't eat any type of bread and when I try to, it always gets stuck. Another thing I've noticed is that if I wait too long to eat than I eat too fast and again, stuck. I am nowhere near where I was hoping to be after 7 months. I've lost 56 pounds, but can't seem to get any more off. I just told my hubby last night that I really need to start concentrating on portion control and better food (actually drink) choices. I'm getting in all my water, and don't drink soda, but lately on the weekends I've been enjoying alcoholic beverages. I know they are empty calories and they also contribute to me eating too fast which leads to stuck episodes. So, it's Monday and a brand new week and I'm committed to making this work. Wish me luck!!
  7. Thank you for your reply Dawn I just wanted to know if it was just me. I had the same exact experience and was so blown away by it. I used to be able to drink alcohol like it was Water. Lol. My life has definitely changed in so many ways but I do enjoy it more now. I was just wondering if others have had similar experiences. Thank you
  8. I haven't had much alcohol since my surgery I don't have any craving for it and I used to love a Margarita with Mexican food but since my sleeve I really don't have any desire for it. I did try to have a glass of wine and it didn't set well. I got terrible indigestion and only a few sips and I was feeling the effects of it right away. My husband says I am a cheap date now...LOL My doctor said that he advises all his patients that want to have a drink to do it the first time at home since the alcohol will affect you very quickly. He was right. I was never a big drinker and now I tend to just stick with water with lemon even when we go out. Everyone is different so try it slowly and see what you think.
  9. Post op I absolutely cannot stomach them. I don't try to booze it up often, mostly I have no desire for it but when I'm having a grown up dinner with my husband I do like to have a glass of wine ... and on Valentine's Day I so wanted to have a glass of champange with him. The first sip and I mean barely wetting my lips with it - I could not tolerate it. It immediately made me feel bad ... a cross between nausea and just turning my stomach completely. Has anyone else experienced this? Or are you guys able to have a drink?
  10. Alcohol is a big time trigger for me to eat crappy food. Wine usually doesn't give me the munchies, but after a whiskey sour or two, I become a human vacuum cleaner! Needless to say I seldom drink them anymore.
  11. Oh sigh, I've been down at a local drinking hole having two or three wines this afternoon, a glorious, balmy autumn day in Melbourne. I'm now totally uncaring about what I eat, cant be bothered cooking and the oven is on, with party pies and sausage rolls (little Aussie delicacies of pastry and meat, definitely not on any diet plan). I know I will regret it, but in truth, just dont care at the moment. I also inhaled about a quarter of the plate of hot chips that we ordered. Yummmmm. On a more serious note, unless I am fully aware of the fact that I probably will lose any inhibitions and eat whatever the hell I want, I avoid alcohol, I can afford it right now, on this particular occasion and am willing to make amends over the next few days so I just went with it. But alcohol definitely = crap food and too much of it!
  12. Why do you feel guilty if it is an occassional thing? All doctors are different but my lap band doctor said I can eat anything I want (except soda) as long as I can get it down ok and no more then 1/4cup. He specifically said alcohol is ok but be careful because it will take less to get drunk. You have to allow room for pleasures in life.
  13. Woot Woot! That is one of the main reasons to avoid alcohol because of what you eat and drink as a result... It lowers your inhibition and willpower and at 7 calories per gram it is one of the most dense fuels you can consume short of fat (9 grams). It is truly empty calories... That said, we aren't dead either and occasionally letting yourself up off the mat isn't a crime ... And in the quoted case it may cause your significant other to try to feed it to you more often............ alcohol that is....... ... Sorry... I'm in one of them moods...

    Caffeine

Ah... the good old caffeine and coffee debates... Some surgeon's absolutely forbid coffee and caffeine... others say whatever you can personally tolerate... I love telling people of the story of my surgeon coming into the recovery room and letting me sip coffee... I have drank coffee ever since... I'm not one to encourage breaking your surgeon's rules, but I would encourage you to challenge their advice with logic. There really isn't anything I don't eat or drink these days, even if only once in awhile... And yes, that includes coffee, ice cream, alcohol, diet soda, pizza, and every other thing that some people are strictly forbidden against or their band might swell up and cause their head to explode...

    No Beer??

First talk to your Dr. Second I drink beer all the time, have never had a problem with carbonation and my Dr never told me I could not do carbonation. He did however recommend that I pour it out into a glass and let it sit for 15 minutes. But your Dr may say something else. Also remember most beers are a minimum of 200 calories and lots of carbs. You should search alcohol in the forum to hear more about it

    No Beer??

Anything even close to carbonation causes great discomfort for me. It feels like a trapped burp. I stayed away from all alcohol for the first 6-7 months. Now I drink a glass of wine or margarita now and then.
  17. Transfer addiction can happen to any bariatric patient, not just bypass patients. I know an alcoholic bypass patient and a band patient who became addicted to pain pills. When we can't use food for comfort or numbing any more, it can be tempting to turn to some other substance or activity to deal with it. So we all need to be cautious because of the potential for transfer addiction.
  18. Its certainly weird but logical I suppose. On my liquid diet stage now, found my best lunch is heating a couple of tablespoons of white wine (drives off the alcohol) adding a dash of worcestershire sauce and a cup or so of simple chicken stock, heat and serve. It can be fortified by adding a tablespoon or 2 of clear beef soup. Yummy, keeps me going fine :-)
  19. OK ladies. someone has got to help me.. i know i posted a forum before about my eh hem... labido.. being kicked into over drive.. but I feel like im a walking horn ball!!!! I almost think i need to take something to keep me from being so freaking horny! k... now im sorry but this might get a little um. R rated so be forewarned. My man and I got busy this morning.. and when we were done... we got busy again.. and when we were done.. lol.. i still needed him to do a little extra with his mouth cuz i just wasn't finished yet..lol...OMG i can't believe im even writing this.. but ok.. so the past 3 days... its been like bunny rabbits and im still having to sometimes take matters into my own hands, if you know what i mean, when he isn't around to help me!!!! Now used to think that addicts were for drugs and alcohol, but u know how people say they traded one habit for another with VSG... i think i traded food for sex.. which on any normal circumstance i would not be complaining about..by any means!!! but WHAT THE FREAKING HELL!!! im basically having to bring an extra pair of panties with me where ever i go cuz if see a hot guy...im like AND..... waterworks!!! lolololol.. Someone tell me what to do please?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

    Why Get A Lapband?

I feel very lucky that i can eat everything ! i dont like soda, fried foods or alcohol, and very little fast food, so i did'nt have to give up anything. we eat pretty healthy at home because my hubby is diabetic so we eat alot of fish, chicken. whole wheat pasta , rice, etc. My portions have gotten much smaller, and i do try to follow the rules. i eat alot more protein than i used to, so my thin hair is much healthier and my digestive problems have gone away. I do , however have a sweet tooth and find i have no problems with "sliders" , but im trying to limit them. I was banded Dec 13th, 2011 and im down 30 lbs, and down from a size 1x to a 16 !, I look and feel so much better ! Today i wore a pair of pants to work that fit very comfortably, before being banded i couldnt even zip them ! So, what ever changes you'll have to make in your diet or life will be totally worth it !! Good luck !

    Defeating The Vsg

I'm having premium, high-fat ice cream with fudge sauce for Breakfast with potato chips for texture. For a snack, a couple candy bars. For lunch I'm having a prime steak drizzled with 1/4 cup of butter. For a snack, a cake (I'll just keep eating until it's gone.) For dinner, foie gras for starters, then chicken alfredo (heavy on the fredo) french fries, and for dessert, pecan pie with whipped cream. After, I'll have as much alcohol as I can drink until I pass out. Sounds disgusting. I'd die before I'd eat that way again.
  22. I got my 1st fill this morning with my Doc. He answered some questions I had about my medications and exercise and whatnot. He told me that to optimize my weight loss I need to eat about 1000 calories a day. I told him that I was eating 1200-1400 now. He also did confirm that we need to be on a liquid diet for 2 days after the fill. You should have an empty stomach when you come for a fill, so don’t eat about 2 hrs prior to your fill appt. he also said don’t schedule a fill before any events like parties or trips out of town bc of the liquid diet that follows. He felt the right side of my stomach and used an alcohol swab to clean the area. He used a tiny needle to giving me the numbing medicine near my port site. It was a tiny pinch. He then prepped the needle for the fill. It was a pretty long needle so as soon as I saw it I looked the other way. He told me it was “only 2 inches long” but it looked like it was longer than that. he went in to do the fill and he found the port like immediately. So was minimal pain, I just felt the needle going in my skin, and I felt it going in my port (like I felt some pressure against something hard). It was over in a matter of seconds. He told me that I needed to sit in the waiting room and drink Water to make sure the fill wasn’t too tight. If you cant keep down water they will remove some liquid. He also told me that I can come back for fills every 7-10 days if I’m still eating more than 1000 calories or I’m feeling hungry. He told me not to wait to schedule a fill. So that’s my story J

    In A Funk

rlane - I am not very far into this journey. But one thing I noticed about myself that may be helpful for you is that when I was home with nothing to do - I obsessed more about food. When I went back to work I obviously had other things on my mind. I also know from my past habits that I am a boredom/stress eater. You didn't mention if you worked/went to school or had a hobby...but if not I would strongly recommend one or all of those if possible. The more you do outside the home the better you will feel. chocolate is my downfall...so is cheese. Heck if you provide me with a chocolate cheesecake I thought I was in heaven. I just haven't allowed it in the house. My family has been supportive. I told them its kind of like an alcoholic just getting out of rehab...be sensitive to me regarding my triggers. You wouldn't put beer in the fridge or a keg stand in the kitchen for an alcoholic...so please have the same courtesy for me.

    I've Booked The Date !

I will start with a little, tiny bit of information about myself. My name is Allyssa, I am a 20 year old girl from Alberta, Canada ! I operate heavy equipment as my occupation for now in the beautiful oilsands (haha). I like to longboard, party and do pretty much any typical thing any 20 year old nonsense a 20 year old gets into. I first began my struggle with weight at the young age of 8 years old, being an asthmatic I was put on hardcore steroids very young that caused a whopping 30 pound weight gain in just a short month and a half. With such a dramatic change, so quickly, I turned to food to cope. By time I was 13 I weighed 150 pounds. By 17, 220 pounds. Hard to believe, hard to imagine, even harder to deal with. I was bounced from Jenny Craig, to Herbal Magic, to stress filled, painful no food diets, and intense workout. In my opinion Herbal Magic was the only diet that worked. I went from 220 to a small 160! It was a fantastic loss, and I was doing so well, when I stuck to my program. With being such a young age, it was hard to stay away from alcohol, and occasionally eating what I wanted. This past January I unfortunately lost a very important figure in my life, which caused me to plummet to the very low that made me re-gain most of my weight. In just a month, I had reached 180 pounds. So February I had decided I want the gastric sleeve, so I hit the internet in search of a doctor I came to a conclusion that Mexico was where I would have my surgery. My surgeons name is Dr. Roldolfo Natera. And my surgery is Hosptial Star Medica. Finally booked for June 1/2012. I am a little nervous as I assume anyone would be. I am looking for support, advice, and knowledge from anyone who has also , decided to have surgery in Mexico, I would like to know all about your experience, dealing with the hospital stay, healing time, diets etc. Thank you so much.
