8 Lb Weight Gain Two Days After Surgery?
txgirl36 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all - I had my vertical sleeve done on 8/28. I ended up staying two nights because I couldn't keep any liquids down on the second day. I finally started feeling much better and was released today! Quick question - I weighed myself as soon as I got home from the hospital and have gained 8 pounds!!! How is that possible only drinking a small amount of Clear Liquids?? So discouraging! -
Just some simple questions!!

I was off a full week after surgery. I recoup pretty well, but I don't think I could have gone back to work as quick as you did. I was feeling pretty good at home 5 days post op. You should start to notice a difference within a few days. Just take things as easy as you can. When you go to the doctor tomorrow. Be sure to ask what to eat. I'm sure they will tell you, but just incase they don't, ask. I was able to move to full liquids at your stage. Most doctors give the first fill around 6 weeks post op. I didn't gain weight during this time, but I didn't lose much either. If you haven't started logging your food on one of the online sites (fitday, dailyplate, sparkpeople and I'm sure there are more) this is a good time to start. You will get hungry soon (I was hungry from the time I walked in the door from surgery) but if you record and make good selections, you should be able to maintain or at least keep the weight gain to a minimum. I hope you're feeling better soon. -
Hey Lumpy....just be aware that the sodium count on the crab is through the roof. I remember when I looked at that info because I also thought the steamed crab would be a good choice and it was calorie wise. But it's really high in sodium so don't be surprised if you have Water weight gain. For me, I find the fish...grilled...is a better choice. It's why when I'm eating out in Jersey, I now go to Bonefish Grill more than Red Lobster.

Well...this is unexpected....

Just make sure you stay out of ketosis. Eat carbs. Ketosis can and does cause fetal brain damage, and an entire slew of birth defects, and make sure to take your bariatric Vitamins. The risk of birth defects with WLS patients is 50-60% higher because of Vitamin and nutrient deficiencies. This is why it's so important to wait, and while I understand the concern about weight gain, you'll have to consume enough to support your body and the developing baby which may slow the losing. I'm almost 22 months out, and tomorrow will hit 9weeks pregnant. I was released at 8 months post-op to TTC, I was also below goal, my labs were/are stellar, and I was getting into maintenance. It took 14 months to conceive. I've only gained 3lbs in 9 weeks, and they want me to gain 30 pounds, they actually wanted me to gain 10-12lbs the first trimester, least say I doubt I can put on 9 more pounds in the next 3 weeks. I'm already eating 1800 calories a day, juicing to get in extra calories/nutrients because even at 22 months I struggle to eat enough food. Please take care of yourself. The baby will pull from your body, fat reserves and muscle mass this early after surgery and most "early out" WLS babies do well, it's the mommy's body that suffers the most. Make sure to have your dental check ups regularly so they can watch for decay, and weakened teeth. Congrats on the pregnancy and best wishes for a healthy pregnancy and delivery. -
Hi! I'm Becky. I'm from Idaho. I'm cash pay because surprisingly my blue cross blue shield has a policy specifically against bariatric procedures. Go figure. I am set to be banded Nov 5, and I'm on my preop diet of 700 cals a day which is a but brutal, but really NOT as bad as I thought it would be. I've only been overweight/obese for about four years now. I started having seizures four years ago... Up to 5 or more a day. I lived in a third story apartment and I seized on the stairs a couple of times and crashed on the cement... I just quit going out. The meds they put me on, I was warned they would ruin my metabolism... I can't lose weight unless I eat less than 1,000 cals a day plus exercise. But the medication is one that works, and I HAVE to be free from those seizures. Being afraid of having a seizure while in the shower and cracking your head open like I did, well it's just no way to live. Anyway, I gained 90lbs ish. I wasn't leaving the apartment, because of fear of seizures.... This I didn't do anything... Laundry, grocery shopping, all of it was up to my sweet and dear husband. I stayed inside out of shame once I'd gained 50 lbs. My weight gain was the result of emotional eating, loneliness, being sedentary, and partly my seizure meds. And, well, the seizures themselves. So, that's where I'm at! Um, no kids (don't want to have them til I'm closer to goal weight), no pets, building a house... Foundation just got put in yesterday!!!! I'm a photographer. Mostly newborn babies and weddings, but lots of other stuff too! I guess that's my intro! Becky/26yrsold/Idaho. Band Date Nov. 5. 255/goal 165.

2 Fills...no Restriction....arrrgh!
KathyLynn replied to KathyLynn's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Thanks Highland. I know I need to be patient. I am trying to make good food choice....no bread, no carbs, more protein, more veggies, but without any restriction my portions are larger, hence weight gain. I feel like I am battling myself right now....and losing (not weight but the battle). -
revision scheduled for oct.21st NERVOUS
taz replied to jsewell's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi Nanook. I'm glad you are feeling better. I'm happy for your daughter too but strictures sound a bit painful. I recently moved to St Charles, Mo, so I haven't been at lapbandtalk for a while. I hope things continue to get better for you. Hi jsewell. I can understand how you would be nervous. At least you can look forward to things getting better. I know the stress you went through and then the weight gain just feels awful. I haven't experienced a revision but I think it is a fear we all have. Just know that things wil get better after your revision. I look forward to hearing how things progress. I know it isn't a popular thing to say, but I will say extra prayers that things go well for you. Tina -
Hi guys this is my first post and I have a few questions for those that have Cigna about the approval process. I currently have UHC, however, I will be starting a new job in January and they offer Cigna. I am currently finishing up the six months of dietician visits required by UHC and I have just one month left before I would be able to submit for insurance approval. However, now that I will have Cigna through my new employer I have been researching their requirements. From what I have seen all In need is 4 months of appointments however my fear is twofold: 1. I never discussed exercise with my dietician and I see that is one of Cigna's requirements, how strict are they about this in your experience. I plan on discussing it at my next appointment so I will have it on my records but that would be only one month so would that be grounds for denial. 2. I have gained weight since starting this process. I have gained about 15lbs from the time I started to now. I am now working on my emotional eating and am making progress but I don't know if a pattern of weight gain will be grounds for denial from Cigna. Do any of you know? Thanks for all your insights!

Has Anyone Else Been Released To Drink Pop
raven8888 replied to SleeveShelly's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's true that it can cause gas pains, especially when you are so fresh post op. however the farther you are out the more it is tolerated. that forant mean its the best choice for you. it was explained to me that it is not so much that it stretches the stomach permanently, it that the carbonation stretches the stomach when it is in there and creates a larger space, which allows you to put more food in it, and ultimately gain weight back, and set yourself up for bad habits again. This is an opportunity to change bad habits that can lead to weight gain again. So it's more a choice you have to make, in my opinion it's self sabotage to even rationalize it. -
Hi Everyone! I was banded in 8/14...lost 35 lbs and gained 20 back. I am on a medication for depression which I struggle with that causes excessive weight gain which has been hindering my progress with the band. I currently weigh 230 lbs. My goal is to get under 200 while being on my medication. Am ready to get back on track and log daily on My Fitness Pal and exercise 3-4 times weekly. I am looking for someone to talk to who can help be a support or who also logs on MFP. Hope to hear from you soon ~Rebecca

My surgery is scheduled for next Tues (4-6) and my surgeon does not require a pre-op diet; only that there is no weight gain between initial consult and surgery day. I didn't think too much about it until I realized the purpose of the diet is to shrink the liver. My doctor has been very thorough about everything. During pre-op testing I had to have an ultrasound in which they did check my gallbladder, liver, pancreas, and kidney. I've read that they can check for a fatty liver by ultrasound. I'm thinking that if my liver looked large during the ultrasound then they would have recommended a change in diet pre-op. I have modified my diet and am doing my own high protein/low fat and low carb diet for this last week. I'm somewhat of a worrier by nature, and after reading about all the pre-op diets, I'm so paranoid! I've lost about 3-4lbs in the last two weeks by just watching what I'm eating and I'm sure this last week I can lose a couple more. I was so thankful I didn't have a pre-op diet before and now I wish I would have (to put my mind at ease)! Anybody else not have a pre-op diet?

Ladies, Don't Do What I did!! Gained ALOT!
vsnowrn replied to Xann77's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
I would have to agree with you on this one. I am 26 weeks pregnant now. Had my band for just a year prior to getting pregnant and lost about 50-60 lbs. I have since gained 40 lbs with the pregnancy so far. Yes it is frustrating, but puking through the band is way not cool!!!! Plus it hurts. So don't worry about the weight gain, if your MD recommends to get it unfilled then do it!. You lost the weight once, you can do it again. -
6 month stall 2 lbs up 2lbs down
leebick replied to Cleo in Mckinney's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I've been stalled for 6 months but a lot of it is my own fault. I "took the summer off" as I was traveling a LOT (gone 5 of 11 weeks, and then 5 consecutive weekends after Labor Day), so it was hard to keep up with my exercise routine (an hour of stationary biking a day). I was also grossly tempted by food and drink- a week in New Orleans? HAHAHA, but it was OK. I learned what I can and cannot tolerate. All in all it was a wonderful summer and I didn't gain any weight, but I also didn't lose weight. I know why- not measuring portions, not exercising regularly, having an adult beverage several times a week. I think if you examine your eating habits and lifestyle activities, you'll be able to find some places where you need to "realign" yourself; I sure know I can! Don't worry about a goal weight. Instead, focus on healthy and strong. My surgeon never set a goal, although they gave me a weight range within which I could reasonably expect to be a year post-surgery. I AM THERE... now I want to lose another 15-20 pounds and keep it off. I am 61 and I know that age brings on the creeping weight gain- a pound here, a pound there... and I never want to have my eating and body out of control again! Know that I am with you on this journey, and I'm starting off anew with measuring portions, cutting carbs (although I don't eat many, I have let the occasional french fry or chocolate chip cookie back into my life), making healthy choices, and working my muscles and body. I know we can both get there!! -

sandi2004 replied to sandi2004's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
So have you looked at what you have done differently that created the weight gain? I'd love to help, but it's you that needs to make the choices and the changes. Or, could you possibly need a fill? Are you eating around the band? A little more information would really be great so I can help you help yourself through this. OK? -
Should I start over?
peacequeen replied to peacequeen's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Actually the trauma from childhood was something different, my parents were killed several years ago while I was an adult..but that's beside the point..but just wanted to clear that up. Shirley, you made alot of sense and you're probably right. I just didn't feel like I should lie, it's not in my character. I did want to make sure I was making the right choices and answering all questions as honest as possible. I was under the impression they would help me through everything and that any tests wouldn't rule out surgery but help them to help me???? The psych knew most of my weight gain was because I quit smoking 8 years ago (35 pound gain) then I developed a rare autoimmune disease and was on steroid treatment for a long time and gained 70 more. So why he felt my past trajedies were related, I'm not sure. I do want to have the right mind set, therefore the therapy. I just still have issues with the fact that I haven't met my surgeon who should have already followed up with me about the procedure I had that will determine if I even get to have lapband or not and they won't return my calls. I think that's unprofessional and makes me wonder what my follow up care would be like. -
Hi everyone! I'm 40yrs old, 5'5" & 235-238#, married w/2 kids. I have been losing & regaining weight since High School, but mostly now it just stays put, unfortunately. I have some health issues, migraine headaches, high blood pressure again due to weight gain, a condition called Pseudotumor Cerebri which causes vision disturbances & migraines & only goes away with weight loss, bad knees, etc. I saw a Bariatric Dr in spring of 2016, but my husband talked me out of the procedure due to the cost, surgery scare tactics & shaming me about regaining the weight again like I've done so many other times after loss. I've been really thinking about the procedure often lately, I'm miserable in my body. My knees are getting really bad, none of my clothes are fitting again, I just got over a severe case of walking pneumonia where I could barely eat for a couple weeks, but I still gained 5-7#!!!! Who does that?? At this point in my life, I would rather be dead than continue gaining weight like this & look & feel miserable forever. But I am only a part time sub teacher, I can't afford the cost of the surgery without my husbands help & insurance. I can't do this alone! My oldest son is only 13, but he lives & breathes what his dad speaks. My parents probably won't agree with this procedure either. What do I do? I'm so confused right now. I know my PCP won't support this, actually I need to find a new Dr anyway. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Prior to 20-May I couldn't feed the end of this belt through the buckle. My thumb references where the end of the belt now ends. Fortunately I had a couple of pairs of uniform pants tucked away from before my huge weight gain. These are now getting to big. I see new uniforms and belt in the near future. I'm kinda liking the new me. #journeyofalifetime Sent from my XT1650 using BariatricPal mobile app

Lap Band or Gastric Bypass
Snoopyloverny replied to DesignerDivaMA's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Ii am reading 2 books on this too, trying to make my own decision ... So far I have come to choose the LAGB over the LGS or the LRYGB b/c in Both of the books it states the % of weight gain back and they are higher than the LapBand. The LB is the least invasive procedure and requires less hospital stay time. It also says that because it is intended for long term maintenance reasons, the commitment by the patient is 100% or it will fail to do it's purpose. The risk factored of death are lower w/ the LB too. The Drs usually give the GB to patients who need to lose an excess amount of weight. the LRYGB is the most expensive and requires the longest hosp stay. All 3 are great but have different jobs in the body. With the LB there is no stapling, cutting, removal or reattachment procedures to your organs.I don't know if it helps you make a better decision but know know for sure which Gastric surgery I want. I would encourage u to keep reading and searching info on each type to help u make your choice. Research, research, research!!!!!! For those interested, the books I'm reading are called: 1) OUTPATIENT WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY - by : Kent Sasse MD 2) GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY - by : Mary McGowan MD -
I've been banded as of 24 days ago. I didn't lose much weight pre-op, but in total lost around 17lbs. I was told my first fill is in 6 weeks which will be may 3rd. I have not been very active but am watching what I'm eating and am feeling frustrated because my weight goes from 234-238lbs which goes back & forth. I'm getting annoyed with my scale and I don't know what the problem is. I have not gotten stuck, but also feel that I have no restriction when I eat. Can someone explain what I'm doing wrong?

What Are Your Summer Plans?
jaxmom replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm heading down to Miami for 7 weeks with the kids. They go to nature/archeology camp on Biscayne Bay and since the camp won't let me in (something about age limit Pffft) I have created my own Mommy Camp. I bike, collect mangos, can mango chutney no one will eat, kayak, explore, take yoga classes and tennis lessons. This is our 4th year going and the last few have been kind of rough because of major surgeries and subsequent weight gain. I'm so excited to head down his year lighter, fitter and happier than I have been in years. My husband and kids are loving the mom who is always on the go and I'm loving life. Bring on the South Florida heat and humidity! I'm ready for you this year! At the end of the summer we are going on an 8 day Alaska cruise with my husbands family. My goal is lose enough weight to feel comfortable in the wet suit I'm going to wear when we go snorkeling in Ketchikan. I have had a life long fear of wet suits (I'm convinced I will look like a seal in one) so I specifically booked this trip to motivate me to move this summer. Just the thought of me trying to shimmy into a wet suit on the shore of a freezing cold body of Water makes me laugh so hard I'm already burning calories... I love hearing everyone's plans. Be safe and wear sunscreen and post pictures! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Good restriction - Need diet advice!!!
Msbandtastic replied to drivera's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have not reached restriction yet but I have read enough here to know that it is better to get a small unfill than to be too tight. Being too tight can actually lead to a stall or even a weight gain because you will start relying on slider foods which can actually be more calories than you should eat. Not to mention the health problems that can occur from being too tight. Maybe have them take out .25 or .50 cc and you could end up being at your "sweet spot". Good luck. -
Everyone looses at a different pace. Maybe the half of a pound weight gain is fluid. Don't give up. I have not been sleeved yet, but I have done a lot of research about this type of surgery. Keep up the good work, it will pay off.

2 Week Post Op Protein Diet........My Experience, 5 Days in
Denise73 replied to Denise73's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You have time to lose the 5 pounds. What are you doing to lose? Perhaps you can add a Protein shake as a Meal Replacement for 1-2 meals and do some like exercise like walking. I'm sure you'll be fine. Most insurance companies/surgeons is more concerned with weight gain opposed to weight lost. There could be a number of reasons why you haven't lost so Im sure they will factor that in. I was told if I didn't lose as long as I didn't gain I would be fine. You'll do it. Let us know how things work out for you. Good luck.
