  1. Hey darling thank you!! Yeah the first few weeks are tough. All in all I have been pretty much just eating like sugar free pudding or jello or an egg here and there but even that goes down very tough. Low fat yogurts and soups. This really is a life changing experience without a doubt. I never imagined someone like me would struggle with eating 😂. I just want time to fly by so I can start a "normal" dietary regime and start going to the gym. But for now just soft puree protein foods and walking. I am stoked though because I have so far lost 16 pounds in 3 weeks! I have much more to go but its all just a work in progress 🤗🤗

Non Fat, Low In Sugar Yogurt

Unflavored, non-fat, Greek Yogurt is best. Depending on your doctor's guidelines, you can add your own level of sweetness later with 4-6 blueberries OR raspberries.

    Sugar ?

Post op you can go back to sugar - although you obviously know that a sugary diet is not ideal for weight loss! Personally, I think that we have to get our heads around the fact that sweet foods are NOT for everyday, therefore just moving to artificial sweeteners is not the answer. You have to learn that everything doesnt have to be sweet, I mean coffee straight and black is fantastic if you've not polluted your taste buds with cream, syrup, sugar sugar sugar. You can overcome a sweet tooth over time by just gradually learning how to eat less sweet food. Greek yogurt is tart and wonderful, yogurt doesnt have to be flavoured with sugar and flavourings to be palatable. You just have to get used to the taste. As well, you probably need to cut right back on things like cereals (which are nearly always very high in sugar). If you do those things your sugar intake will be pretty low and if you DO fancy a piece of cheesecake on a speical occasion, there is no reason in the world not to have it and enjoy it. if you need large amounts of artificial sweeteners on a daily basis, then you are definitely choosing the wrong foods and drinks. You need to move your diet in a more natural direction.

    I'm failing my band!

I was going to Curves prior to surgery, but that wasn't enough. I started walking in a park near home that has a 2 mile nature trail. I try to do twice around as a minimum. When the weather is nice (now that we have daylight savings I have enough light to go after work) or even with rain, I still go. We had a decent snowfall recently and I didn't make it that day, but the next I was there. I have these wire wrapped rubber things called Yaktraks that slip over your shoes. I put them on and walked. They gave me sure footing where the path was still covered. I have a nice big umbrella, too, so unless it is a blizzard, freezing rain, lightning, or pouring buckets, I walk. Sometimes I do 3 or 4 times around. I carry peanuts for the squirrels (passive weight lifting?) so I don't walk especially fast and I stop depending on how many squirrels show up. For Snacks, I go to kaysnaturals.com. They sell high Protein chips and cereals. If you like yogurt and there is a Trader Joe store near you, they sell Greek yogurt which is higher in protein than others. They have two, one with 12g but higher in sugar and fat free, the other (which I bought) has 22 (really) grams protein, only 6g sugar and fat free. It is plain, so I buy sugar free preserves to stir in it. That 22g is in one cup! I switched to that recently because the fat free yogurt at food stores is high in sugar (some 11g) and I try to minimize sugar, fat and salt, and eat healthy carbs like salad, and Trader Joe sells whole grain tortillas that are low carb. I don't especially do low carb because there are lots of healthy carbs. I make a lot of chicken caesar type salads at home. I use those green bags you see on TV and buy Romaine in heads (they really keep until I finish them) I grill chicken breasts in olive oil or Pam, doing several to have them ahead. I use the Romaine, chicken breast or julienne cut turkey or ham that I get at Mars, I cut up a hard boiled egg, sprinkle parmesan cheese and use Marzetti Light Supreme Caesar or Bolthouse Farm Caesar Parmisan (it is yogurt based and while is doesn't say light it is comparable to to a light dressing). I also use fat free croutons. I don't cook a lot so that is my mainstay dinner when I don't feel like fixing anything hot. I have trouble with bread, so I devised a crustless pizza. PM me if you would like that recipe. I would also have a meeting with your dietician and journal your food so she can see what is going on. And if you aren't going, I would suggest the group support. You can pick up a lot of tips from others there. If you weren't banded locally you can still go to a local group. I think most if not all are free and open to the public. Good luck.

more poop talk- 9+ months out

I put them in my yogurt, or oatmeal, and also bake with them.
  8. My surgery is scheduled for 12/2. My surgeons office gave me a very specific liquid diet to follow for one week. If anyone is interested I can post a copy. It included fat free no sugar added pudding, soups, yogurts, meal replacements, etc.
  9. What kind of liquids? I'm on liquids but "full liquids" and my surgeon allows blenderized Soups, Greek yogurt, thinned out cream of wheat, etc It is tough, but I'm only 5 days post op so I have no real desire to eat I just do it because I have to. I definitely couldn't cheat, I'm too afraid to damage my new stomach. At this point I've been on this diet for nearly 3 weeks so one more wont kill me. I am pretty excited for scrambled eggs and tuna though!

    Infamous Left shoulder pain

Interesting! I had it really bad the last two days (not today). However, I felt a twinge today when I ate my first full liquid in 3 weeks (1/2 c. yogurt). So I have a feeling I'm going to be the opposite of you - feeling that pain when I get towards satisfied/full. Amy

    Fluids fluids fluids

For my post op liquid diet I can only have milk, yogurts, protein drinks, and broth. Its a very boring diet. Im starting to hate protein drinks.
  14. I had surgery January 22nd. The third day I was tired and cried about what did I do, I can't eat pizza again. I think when I didn't feel good is when I would eat comfort food. So of course I didn't feel good after surgery and couldn't eat to feel better. So my sleeve likes nonfat yogurt, refried beans with a bit of low fat mozzarella, soups, mashed potatoes and shakes. I tried salmon that was soft it didn't like it. If it's mushy it seems ok. Everything on the nutritionists list for week 2 and 3 works but if I jump ahead it definitely doesn't work. So nonfat Greek yogurt may be my new comfort food.

I survivied and am back home!

Hiya Kimberly! So glad to hear that you were safely transported to bandland! I wasn't given a specific brand for Protein supp... was just told to choose a whey Protein Drink and that my total daily protein intake should be 60 grams or more. I chose unjury chocolate flavor and the unflavored mixed with the low carb carnation instant Breakfast. My diet orders were a lot different than yours... but while I was on Clear liquids... popsicles were my best friend... as well as SF Jello. When you get to full liguids... yogurt without chunks of fruit goes down well and NF pudding. I also ate cream of tomato Soup and other strained cream Soups during the full liquid stage. I don't know if you saw the pics of my belly after being banded... I'll attatch one just so that you won't feel alone with your bruising! Congratulation girlie! Darcy

    BitterSweet :) :(

Eat the carbs before working out as they are burned first before hitting muscle. Eat Proteins after workout. Supplement with Protein shake (130 calories and 23 grams protein) Protein Bars (low fat like Power Bars about 205 calories and 14 grams protein). Fat free cheese (25 calories and 5 grams protein) Fat Free Milk, 1cup (90 calories, 9 grams protein) Greek Yogurt (160 calories, 14 grams protein) Fat Free Cottage Cheese. 1/2 cup (80 calories, 13 grams protein) Mix up routine. DO NOT just do Zumba. Your body will adjust to workout, memory has muscle as well as brain. Incorporate some weight training, running, bicycling. Try a personal trainer for a few weeks help break up routine and give instruction on how to burn the fat, not the muscle.
  17. Try softer Proteins, you will be able to eat more and get more Protein....cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, tuna salad, refried Beans, spam, skim milk, split pea Soup, cheese, eggs. As for Protein shakes, which ones have you tried? There's dozens and dozens of different brands and at least as many flavors. You don't have to stick with just the thick, sweet, chocolate/vanilla/strawberry ones. The RTD shakes would make me gag, but I learned to dilute them with milk and have tried at least 15 different products to find the ones I like. I'm enjoying a cherry lemonade Syntax nectar Protein Drink on ice right now. There are also pea protein, egg protein, hemp protein and sprouted seed protein products out there if it's the whey/milk that your body doesn't like. It's important for you to get your protein or your body will suffer. Even at 6 months I can't eat enough to meet goals without at least one shake /day.
  18. My doctor's orders were... Days 1-3 clear fluids Day 4-17 full liquids. (Protein shakes, broth and cream Soups with Protein powder added) Day 18-28 puréed (refried Beans, eggs, puréed soups with unflavored protein powder, puréed tuna, cottage cheese, plain Greek yogurt flavored with protein powder or puréed fruit, soft cheeses, guacamole, hummus) Day 29-40 soft foods (all of the above plus really moist chicken, soft fishes, all cheeses, soft cooked veggies like squash, cauliflower and carrots, seafood, all soups, canned corned beef, deviled ham, burger, chili) Day 41+ regular food except nuts, chips, seeds, etc which Were off limits till 3 months out. My restriction was so good I actually had to transition slower than what my doc suggested. And I never got sick of liquids because I had such a huge variety.... Dozens of flavors of Protein Shakes as well as every variety of broth, cream Soup and bisque I could find. I still drink most of these things even 8 months out or I couldnt meet protein goals
  19. You're going to have to feed your body. At this point, your body is eating your muscle mass, and it is dangerous. My surgeon had the same concerns, but I was eating, and he threatened to put in a feeding tube if I didn't amp up my calories. Your mind is not going to catch up for several months so you are going to have to take the medical advice and start eating and drinking more. There are soy Proteins that you can mix with almond, soy milk, or Water. I personally could not tolerate those either. BUT, you need to start drinking your fluids. You're body is going to shut down, and you don't want to be hospitalized again, do you? Get some regular gatorade, your heart needs fluids along with electrolytes, the potassium will help with your leg cramps, get some yogurt in if you can, you are going to have to listen to your medical team, and if you aren't willing to listen to them, you need to seek counseling. Just because your mind is lagging behind on what you see in the mirror, doesn't mean you need to let your body suffer in the process. If you are Vitamin and Protein deficient, you need to start feeding your body. Something will work for you, and you have to be willing to stop worrying about a gain, if your body shuts down. Losing weight is fabulous, but you really have gone from one extreme to the next which is not uncommon. I was scared to gain too, but you know I never had a stall. I lost steadily every week, some weeks it was only a pound or 2, but I lost weight. Please take care of yourself. You've gone through so much to get healthy, stop starving your body.

    Can't eat

The recovery from the swelling varies from person to person. My surgery was 10/25 and I am mostly on puree but can do mushy if I chew it to puree. I am full on 3 oz.And I am still getting 3/4 of my Protein from protein powder. I like the unjury unflavored mostly I just blend it 1% milk but I also blend it into cottage cheese, you're and no added sugar pudding. I have a hard time with smells and the powder really grossed me out for a while so I mixed the powder right into the yogurt and cottage cheese so it's ready to eat when I want it. I add 2 scoops (42gr) per large tub. The smell doesn't bother me now, now it's just bacon, car exhaust, wet dogs, teen bys laundry...

In the hospital I was given yogurt pudding creamy soups so that's kinda soft
  22. I just had a single graham cracker sheet with a tbsp of reduced fat PB. I also eat fruit, or grab a slice of sandwich meat, or some baby carrots/raw broccoli with ranch dip, a yogurt, applesauce, basically whatevers handy that doesn't scream "you may as well just rub me on your thighs cause I'm headed straight there anyway" when i look at it
  23. Liquids like that go right thru me - I put down a cup of broth and half a cup of juice in a sitting in the hospital, but my wife, after her DS a few years ago, could only put down her nominal stomach size in fluids for a long time. Doc says it's just one of the variations between us. The soft foods like yogurts and puddings a couple days later went down a lot slower, so no worries there.
  24. Well, in the morning I either have 2 TBSP. of either cream of wheat, or oatmeal and 2TBSP of yogurt. Lunch is deli turkey 1oz., and 2 Tbsp. of nonfat cottage cheese. Dinner is either 1 oz of deli meat and 2 TBSP of nonfat cottage cheese. I dot purée. With what I'm eating small bites and good chewing seem to work
  25. at 5 weeks I had tea for breakfast and sometimes blended low sugar oats and mostly ready made protein drinks. I really liked the Glucerna steady carb protein drinks and I would just add some more protein powder to them. At 5 weeks only pureed things would stay down. Jars of low sugar baby food too. I am 6 weeks 4 days post op and can eat some solid foods like a rice cake with peanut butter, soft fruit, Greek yogurt, soft scrambled eggs. I ate 3 small soft meatballs tonight for dinner which went down just fine but chicken gives me difficulty so I will wait a bit longer before trying it again. I also drink smoothies with lower sugar fruits, spinach, yogurt in it with protein powder. You can look up low calorie/carb smoothies. I like to use a half of a beet, some cucumber, fresh ginger and mint and all that stuff to make it really tasty and nutrient dense. Sometimes I add about 8 almonds but you have to watch how much ingredients you put in and tally up the calories. you want it to be 200 calories and under. Berries are low glycemic so I use those the most. Half of banana since they are high sugar, I like peaches, etc. Make sure you put your protein powder in them. All depends what your taste buds are like. I live in a hot climate so a cold smoothie for lunch suits me fine and I enjoy sweet tasting drinks
