  1. Yesterday I went to my first Weight Loss Support group and I absolutley loved it. It's great to get support from fellow weight loss surgery patients and it's great to speak face to face about their experiences. Methodist Health System has several weight loss support groups in Dallas, Richardson and Mansfield. USMD has meetings in Arlington. I don't work for the hospital nor am I affiliated with them, I just thought this information was too good not to share with my fellow bandsters. Check out the links for more info: Classes & Events USMD - Your Physician Owned Hospital Serving Arlington, Texas and the surrounding area

Pre-op today -Drama in the waiting room!

Oddly enough I wish I would of had entertaining waiting room drama, but I didn't! There was one other (much older) lady in there, she asked me very nicely what I was having done because I was so young, and I told her lap band. Apparently the woman's daughter also had it done and over a period of 3-4 years, she had managed to lose 300+ pounds off of it. It was very encouraging to meet a stranger in the waiting room that was as supportive as she was to me. Same with all the doctors/nurses/people that were bringing me to the operating room. They all were being very supportive and just in general, amazingly nice all around. I think pretty much everyone I know does know about the surgery at this point. It doesn't bother me, everyones known I've struggled with my weight since I was little. I have not yet met one person that has said anything bad about it, or made any kind of rude comments on it. I'm lucky, I suppose.
  4. Hi guys, So I had my first email consultation with a surgeon regarding gastric sleeve surgery, filled out a few forms regarding my health, previous weight loss attempts etc . My sister is a doctor and she's really against me having the surgery because a) she's says I'm too young (27) and be she's concerned about the risk of developing esophageal cancer later on. Have any of you read up on this or had similar concerns? It's making me reconsider my options.

    I am bad

    A. You are not "bad". B. You are human, that's why you did that. C. Remember how you feel and think about that next time you are tempted to make a bad choice. If we were perfect we would not all need weight loss surgery!! It exists because there is a whole sub-category of people who can't control what and how much they eat. I am also a volume eater and that's why I chose the band and it has been a wonderful thing so far for 6 months. Dont' give up, Learn and move on. And try really hard for the next few days until your surgery....your surgery will be easier on you and the surgeon if you have followed the pre-op diet!! Good luck!!

    No fill for me

Right now I'm not hungry after meals. I keep my calorie intake average around 1300 per day with zero hunger. Maybe I'm eating too much and losing weight anyway, not sure. I might start getting hungry by the time the next app. comes around
  7. Yesterday was my 11th day post-op. My wife was feeling down from hearing about a death in her family. I was on deck for ensuring everyone got fed. I went to Arbys and loaded up on the insanely delicious brisket sandwiches they bombard TV with on their ads. Everyone seemed happy. Grabbed some Cookies later from a local spot that makes the best. Took them home to my wife. Cheered her up a little. Took my son to a friends birthday party......picked him up at 10:00pm where he said they had pizza & cake yet he was miraculously hungry again. We went through the drive through at my favorite spot on Earth....BoJangles. He had a box of chicken sitting in his lap and couldn't stand it....1/2 way home he asked to eat. I laughed at him and said to dig in. He cut the overhead light on and destroyed that yardbird, biscuit and my favorite drink....a Diet Dew. Needless to say he wasn't done by the time we reached the house so I sat in the driveway with him and waited on him to finish. I am planning on cooking or grilling something for them for lunch today. My wife is one of those blessed folks who has always been the recommend weight on the height-weight chart....or close to it. Our son is a teenage carnivore. He's tall and overly lean. We keep him well fed....yet he's got the metabolism of three. I say all the above to simply say this: I am constantly seeing HD TV food commercials and have been surrounded by my prior favorite foods and held prisoner seated beside Teenage T-Rex as he enjoys them. It is no biggie. I'm still having Protein shakes as my only meals, 12 days post-op. I don't feel deprived or hungry. I"m not feeling like I'm missing out. I'm thrilled by the readings on the scale every morning. It feels better than any food could ever taste.

  9. I went to the Dr. yesterday for my one month check up. I had lost 30lbs since my surgery. He told me I should wait to get my first fill and then see in a month if I need one. He said I'm losing weight at the right pace. Is this normal?
  10. I don't think your protein snack is a problem. There are two phases to gastric bypass surgery. These are the weight loss phase and the maintenance phase. The approach is different between these two phase. I am 4 years post op RNY gastric bypass. This describes the approach that I am using in the Maintenance phase. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf
  11. How long does the process take from initial consultation to surgery date? It really depends on your insurance, your surgeon, and you. Could be anywhere from a couple of weeks to a year, but for most people it seems to be about 3 - 6 months. Did anyone feel that people in their environment judged them for having surgery vs 'trying to lose weight' the natural way? I've told just about everyone who has asked about my weight loss about my surgery. Only one person has said anything negative to my face. Other people may be saying things behind my back, or thinking negative, judgmental things. I really don't give a rat's patootie what anyone thinks about me or how I lose weight though. That may be one of the benefits of doing this as a not-young person (I am 49 now) -- my IDGAF bone has definitely gotten stronger through the years. It's a medical decision, I made it in consultation with my physicians, anyone who feels like they have the right to an opinion on my medical decisions can bite me. How long was the hospital stay? My surgeon's standard hospital stay is 2 nights. Others do 1 night, 3 nights, or on an outpatient basis, it varies a lot. How long does recovery take? Again, this is all over the map. We are all such individuals when it comes to healing, plus different surgical techniques may result in longer or shorter healing times, some people may have complications, others may have hiatal hernia repair or gall bladder removal done at the same time as the sleeve. I was off work for two weeks and pretty much exhausted for four weeks after surgery. I've seen posts from people who bounced back a lot sooner, and others who took longer. But to be clear, during the two weeks off work, I was tired, napping a lot, and in occasional pain, but not bedridden or unable to care for myself and my household. I just needed to be able to take things slow and rest a lot.

    Gained weight

Don't be too hard on yourself!!! The great thing is that you're recognizing it!! I'm 17 months out and have been stalled for almost 5 months (and have been fluctuating 3-4 pounds up and down). I had to take a long hard look at myself...it was eye opening to say the least!! I would not consider 6 lbs a a real "gain". Look on the bright side, it's not 10 pounds...or 15...or 20!!! I think there are a lot of us here that are working to get back on track. For me, it's just about tracking....when I start tracking, my nutrition improves. Figure out what you need to get yourself back on track and make that a priority. You're not alone in your struggle, but you're the only one that can figure out why you're struggling!!! And.....never, never, never give up!!!!
  13. Have you been overweight your entire life? Have you tried structured diet plans and workout plans and continually failed? If so - and you're battling additional health problems due to the excessive weight then clearly this may be the route for you. Try not to psyche yourself out of the losers bench.
  14. Hi everyone! My name is Pam, I'm from the Dallas area, and I was sleeved on 6/25/2013. My husband was sleeved on 5/6/13. It all started in August of last year. Two of my co-workers had VSG done during the same week (unbeknownst to the other!). Both of them weighed significantly less than me. Call it my wake up call. I had to finally accept the fact that I am morbidly obese at a BMI of 45. I went home that evening and told my husband I was interested in this "new" weight-loss surgery. I had never been interested in the bypass because I couldn't stand the thought of dumping syndrome. The sleeve surgery sounded perfect. To my surprise, he not only approved of my interest, but said he was interested too! We went to a seminar held by Dr. Nick Nicholson. That evening, we made our decision. My husband even told me he wanted to go first. He said because he had more to lose. I think he didn't want to chicken out after he saw me go through it! Since his surgery, he has lost 84 pounds, including pre-op diet. I have lost 44.8 pounds, including pre-op. I started my pre-op diet when he started his, so I lost quite a bit more than I would have otherwise. Reasons for wanting to lose weight (besides the obvious): We have 3 children: two teenage daughters and a 7 year old daughter. We have hardly any energy to do fun things with them, especially the youngest, who has ADHD. Going out to see fireworks last night was a big family outing for us! I am so excited and happy. I know this time I will succeed and get to my goal of at least 150 pounds. I want to have energy to give my children quality time. I am also grateful to have found this forum. I also attend a support group at work. I am a nurse who works for a health insurance company. We have a LOT of nurses who have had this surgery, especially since our insurance covers it. It is great to meet twice a month and compare notes.

    Struggling

I am unable to comment on the binge eating, others can help you there. Prior to my surgery, I did stay home. I was so embarrassed to go out because of my size and how it disgusted me. I had made myself disabled, it was so hard to do anything and doing the smallest home chores would leave me panting. I didn't want to be in the spotlight and have people talking about me being fat, so I remained at home. I was happier that way or so I thought. Now I know I was depressed. I have always been thrifty and seek out clothes on Ebay. I will go into a store [ or order online and return the item ] try on their range and then stalk the same clothes on Ebay. Now that I am loosing weight I am selling. I dont buy much because I will hopefully need a size smaller very soon. If you have to buy some more clothes - tell yourself they will be the last fat suits ever. Keep a set to remind yourself in your near future. Try them on occasionally and laugh and cry at how far you have come since you bought them. As River Moon said, Hang in there, not long now.

    New to this...

Most individuals that undergo surgery find that their taste buds change. There are a variety of Protein shakes on the market available. It is important to find one that you can tolerate. So experiment. Immediately after surgery, the primary divers are meeting your protein, Vitamins and fluids requirements. Meals are secondary. Your body is converting stored fat into energy. Thus you lose weight.

    Struggling...is it too late?

sounds about normal to me... the weight gain that is...I actually gain from 10 to 15 pounds here and there, but for some strange reason I lose it all. the depression needs to be addressed... I can see why you get a little down.... we don't want to gain a pound... I'm a 10 year vet. so keep your head up and no matter what keep it moving somehow... good luck
  18. This is what i just posted on a similar thread. I really think this is one of my biggest obstacles. I'm a boss in a hospital. People love to gossip and poke fun at bosses (I've moved up through the ranks over 23 years so pretty aware of how things work). I'm hoping and praying I become more comfortable with the ones who enjoy watching others struggle or fail. Logically I know I shouldn't give a rat's ass. And I sure would hope to inspire those who are thinking about it. But it's still a sticking point for me. Anyway, this was what I just wrote. It's good to see others perspective on this and I'm thankful for these threads..... "I have told only a few people who I know won't judge me one way or the other (husband, sister, best girl friends). I loathe being under a microscope. I don't like discussing weight with acquaintances. I've read many threads where people say they've been shown nothing but support and told everyone. I'm always amazed at that. My family loves me dearly. I know they want me happy and healthy. But most have little to no Education about WLS and have preconceived ideas that are often off base. My parents have anxiety issues - my mother is terrified of anything medical. One close friend (we are both nurses) talked to me like he was an expert in a subtle, yet condescending way about my plans. I was shocked and disappointed. Did he really think I'd enter into this without tons of preparation and research? What nurse would do that? Most surgeons require at least moderate education. I was testing the waters with him. I realized then that very few people have the ability to walk in someone else's shoes. I'd like to think this isn't true but I think some normal sized people see obese people as slightly stupid about "choices". That doesn't mean they don't like us or even love us - they just sort of doubt us. I'm 45 years old. If I don't ask for your opinion, chances are I didn't want it but that never stops anyone! This will be my biggest challenge - the balancing of who to tell, who to listen to, who to avoid, who to trust. I'm close to getting scheduled. I'll likely be sleeved in the next month. I've only told a few and I'm waiting to the last min to tell my parents - just in case something horrible really happens. Not sure what to tell my boss. I don't need others doubts and worries hanging over me. I have enough of those on my own. I need a few cheerleaders and some empathy. Glad for this site. It has been a Godsend! "
  19. Soooo some of you that have read my other posts knoe I've had a lot of different things going on this past year especially emotionally. This weekend my husband and I had an entire weekend for us alone! It started out really bad. He kept suggesting all these places he wanted to go and things he wanted to do like bowling, movies, etc. I really do love doing those things, but my weight always gets in the way. I don't like the looks and stares from people who glare at me as though I was a walking zombie. I don't fit in the theatre chairs comfortably anymore and I finally snapped this weekend. I finally had to break down and tell him why I kept saying no to these places. After my 20 minute crying spree and rant his eyes were the size of 1/2 dollars! He was so mad and me for holding and tell thay in and never talking to him about it! Then he just looked at me and said I get so much now that I didn't realize before. He is totally okay with this surgery and has now become my personal cheerleader! Today I feel blessed ????

    Questions!

Happy New Year Lady, just wanted to let you know that it will work out for you, I had medical conditions that okayed me for surgery, I am only 5'1 and my highest weight was 196 lbs. I had 3 procedures done on December 5th, so I am still recovering. I had the sleeve, gall bladder removed and the unexpected Hiatal Hernia. You might say the works! Everyone kept telling me that I did not need the surgery because I was not 100 plus over but I did it for health reasons. Losing my mom and brother to strokes and sleep apnea, The psychiatrist approved that I did not even have to take the 5 Binge eating classes. Never was a binge eater anyway, when I got nervous, I lost my appetite. You are taking the first step to a new beginning. I am already down to 172. Any type of Obesity is worth getting help for. Good Luck to you and I am sure everything will work out just fine.

    The Edge of BMI

I have no co-morbidities, not even borderline, which even my primary is shocked by. My best friend is just like you, healthy in every sense except the extra weight. Why do insurances have to be such a pain? We are just asking for help
  22. Hello everyone! I'm on the countdown. My surgery is scheduled for August 30th and I'm excited to get back to me. Your posts have been both informative and encouraging. Is there any place on the forum where people discuss the expected weight loss and does it depend on the starting weight?

    Heartburn

I'm now experiencing heartburn with many foods at this heightened weight. I'm wondering if its a symptom of weight gain or age?

    Wondering

Look him up on health grades. Ask about attending a support group where his patients go, you will meet people and find out the real deal. Not sure what stories are scaring you - but it is a serious surgery and there is a risk of complications. If you can lose weight and keep it off without surgery - that is safer. Me, I couldn't do that and weighing 300+ was killing me slowly so I was willing to take the risk. Sleeve surgery has slightly lower complication rate then the gastric bypass however. I picked a surgeon with lots of experience, and with a good reputation and then had the good luck too - no complications. It is a risk though.

    Embarassed

So my new hasn't been feeling right. So I called the company to come in and look at it since it's so new and I had an appointment for today. Last night as well while I was sleeping I heard a crackle. They come in today, and they remove mattress and box spring. The woods on my side of the bed snapped. Just my side. The guy and my husband were very discreet and repaired it but I know it was due to my weight. I am so nervous about this surgery but today my choice is clear. I'm so embarrassed.
