    Birth control options

I really like the injectable birth control sticks (implanon, nexplanon). They inject it right under the skin in your arm and it is good for 3 years. My gyno says that weight gain is minimal as well. Everybody is different, but last time I was on implanon (I'm on nexplanon right now which is the same thing, basically) I never had a period, which was great! It is progestin based so you don't have to worry about estrogen. Here is a link to the nexplanon website: http://www.nexplanon-usa.com/en/consumer/index.asp?WT.srch=1&WT.mc_id=CODENX00Q&MTD=2&CPN=1&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=nexplanon&utm_campaign=Nexplanon+Branded+2012&MTD=2&ENG=1&CPN=2&ADG=3 I hope that this helps and that you are able to find a good solution!

    Leaving on a jet plane......

Nuts may be a good source of protein but they are very very fattening. I wouldnt do pretzels either they may get stuck. Eat something before you get on the plane that you know will hold you like some scrambled eggs. I was eating nuts and guess what weight gain. Its not worth it.
  3. A lot of the weight will be from the IV fluids like others have said above, but also realize your body has gone through a traumatic experience and it will take up to a few weeks for all of the swelling to go down as well. This will also lead to a slight weight gain. Give it time and the weight will begin falling off. Though I lost a few pounds after surgery, the weight didn't start to pour off until after I went back to work six weeks later. Keep up the hard work. Things will even out before you know it. !
  4. I don't know what I want to do!? I really thought I made the decision to do this, (made seminar date...Jan 19, 2010). Am unsure and scared about the surgery and complications...I know they are about as much as say my knee surgery...which was laproscopic too...but when you sit and read all the complications its so intimidating. Has anyone else has 2nd thoughts? Or completely changed their minds? I want to change, and have done pills, diets, exercise etc and all have ended in weight gain or loss and gain back. I want help in making a decision, hubby is concerned about restrictions and basically leading a normal life, because I said you have no avoid this n that and he is concerned about the restricted living, ideas, thoughts, comments??! Help! I don't want to lose hope, am thinking about trying to do the preop liquid diet and then go on a 1000 cal diet alone before all this and see what happens???

Is anyone doing the ADF version of 5:2?

My heart breaks for you. I gained weight because of a medication I started taking (7 lbs in 3 weeks) but I was able to just quit taking it and the weight gain stopped. It is not as easy for you and it very much sounds like your body's hormones are out of whack. Can you have it removed or do they have to be in place for so long?? After I quit taking B/C to get pregnant with my first son, I never took it again because it had messed up my body so badly. But I know that is not an option for a lot of women. Oh, I had also sent you a PM about getting your thyroid checked...not sure if you got it or not, but it might also be something to think about if you haven't already. Just a thought. Keep us posted, I am thinking of you!
  6. My dr has always been very supportive until recently. I was banded 06/16/07. Lost 110 lbs. Then in Oct 08 had a fill of .25cc. That evening I had no restriction at all. I called my dr. He said it was my imagination. Went back to dr in Jan 09. Only had 2cc in band He put 5cc in. Jan 09 got 2cc. March 1 cc for a total of 8cc in an 11cc band. Still have no restriction. Had upper GI last week, no slippage everything fine. Sat. had scope. No problems. So in my opinion the problem has to be the port or tube. The dr. says no the problem is in my head. But this is my body and I know how I felt (with restriction) prior to what over happened in October. What is your opinion? Has anyone elst had this problem? What should I do?

    BMI Too High--Help!

Sorry to hear about your troubles, is it possible to change the medicines you are on? (as your weight gain over the last 2 yrs could be a reaction to the medication ) to see if that will help you lose the initial weight? You might also want to consider contacting a Dr in Mexico to discuss your case (a lot of people on the forum have had their op in Mexico and have named their Drs if you would like to check it out). Their requirements might be different and you may be able to do your op there. Good luck and wish you all the best. Sent from my SM-G900FD using BariatricPal mobile app
  8. I'm in the same boat. Surgery 9/2012 260 down to 176 now 210 don't know how to stop the weight gain. Looking for help! Glad to see you have taken some steps in the right direction. Unfortunately most help is not covered by insurance ????
  9. I know Im late. I feel your struggle. I got sleeved in 2012 also. June 14th was my surgerversary. I put on 50 pounds in last couple years so I know your frustration. I manned up and went to see my doctor this past monday 6/20/16. I was sure he was going to go in on me for the late visit and for the gain but it was totally different. He said that I carried the weight gain well but said my blood pressure was high. Im 36 and too young to have high blood pressure. High blood pressure does not go with my outfit. LOL I even had to go back to sleeping with my CPAP machine. I was very discouraged but he told me to come back to see the Nut'ist and he wanted to see me in six months instead waiting a year. So Im paying attention to my diet and I walk an hour everyday. It feels like an up hill battle but Im determined to get back to were I was. You can do this. just take it one day at a time and know that you are not the only one who has fallen. If you need someone to hold accountable from now on the let me know. Sometimes I need that myself. I was a sexy fother mucker at my goal weight. LOL! Now I just feel like blah! Thats real talk. My wife likes the smaller me and I did too. She doesn't complain but I want to be healthier to be around for my family so thats my motivation.

    Weight gain

Well its unlikely to be a fat gain, its likely to be a temporary scale weight gain likely caused by fluid retention or something else. Keep following your guidelines and you will be fine. If you have constipation at the moment, that could be a factor too. Also make sure you weigh the same time of day each time, best is first thing in the morning after going to the toilet. Make sure the scales are in the same place and that the batteries do not need replacing. You didn't mention if you had changed what your are eating or drinking in the past couple of days or if you eating more volume? Have you started to exercise? Do weight or strength training? All these could result in temportary fluid retention.
  11. I felt the same way. I mean hell we should be able to on our own. It's will power and working out right? Wrong, there are solo many aspects that go into our relationship with food and with ourselves that affect our mental, emotional, and physical health. Stop looking at this surgery as you failed at doing this correctly. This is a tool to help you make the changes maybe you knew you needed to make and some you didn't. I don't know about any of you but, my family taught me very bad food habits. I'm married with no kids but I book for an army because that was how I was taught. Or I work long days it's easier to get McDonald's than to make a healthy meal to take with me. Yeah, excuses. We can come up with hundred s if we tried from medications, mental health, physically I just can't work out or I'm tired. Bottom line is how long have you been trying this on your own? The tools you have used in the past diets, work out marathons, medication who knows what all you tried. I however tried them all. I'm an athlete I was injured in a car accident and broke my back. My weight gain started there but it didn't stop. After 12yrs battling with losing what I learned is I don't have all the tools or information. Our society is built for convenience which makes us far and lazy. Then fills us with shame and guilt. I say dump the shame and choose to mindful instead. You wouldn't be in this chat if you were doing it well in your own. Great news, your not alone! We have a chance to learn from each other and better yet pass on the knew knowledge and healthy living to the kids. Just my opinion but use this as the tool you need to kick start some major changes you need. Is it hard? yes, does it hurt? Yes. Is it worth it? I'm 14 days post op and down 21lbs. I've learned that it I didn't have all the tools to do it on my own and now I'm seeking the healthy ones out. So yes it's worth it to me. I wish you all the best. But to me it's scarier going on the way I was diabetic, suck, unhealthy, and unhappy. You still have time to change your mind. Until they take you back you can cancel so just decide can you do it on your own? I couldn't. Sent from my QTASUN1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  12. It really takes some time for your body to adjust to this new way of eating and getting nutrients. You may experience some weight gain and even stalls over time but it’s normal. your weight will adjust if you just keep following the routine your surgeon/team put you on.

3 weeks out and weight gain

I had RNY on 4/10/17 and I can't tell you what's going on, but I well understand your worry and frustration. I'm looking for a weight loss buddy -- someone to check in with and share with -- are you game? I'll leave it to others to advise you regarding the weight gain. My instincts want to tell you to not to worry. Everyone here seems to think they'll be "the exception," in terms of being able to lose the weight, but everyone seems to lose it. I wish I could be more helpful, but for all I know, I could be in your shoes in another week or so. Bunny

WHAT AM I GOING TO DO?

Well said! This is the sensible approach to a lifestyle you can maintain for the rest of your life. This panic over the holidays and the "inevitible" weight gain - that's fat thinking. That's all or nothing, food controls me and my lapband should do ALL the work thinking and whilst you indulge in that, you are never going to truly beat obesity. You can keep your band ultra tight so that it controls you with an unpleasant hard stop - until it slips or erodes or something forces you to unfill it. Or you can exercise some self control, allow a bit of indulgence on Thanksgiving day, eat healthy the rest of the week and do some extra exercise - put your shoes on and go out for a walk every day if that's all that's available while you're away. There is really nothing to stop you doing any of that. The only reason why a whole ton of extra food and alchohol make it down your gullet and cause a weight gain will because you choose to allow it. Christmas is a hard time, but normal people gain a couple of pounds occasionally too, and a couple of pounds is easy to lose. But a bit of self control and some extra effort around the difficult days will probably net that out. whilst I was unfilled and afraid of the same lapses in judgement, I would start my meal with a fairly large serve of raw vegies - carrot, cucumber, capscicum, mushrooms and a big glass of Water. It really did take the edge of enough to keep me to a bandster sized portion of the less healthy foods that were put in front of me. And despite having chemo, and feeling crap, I still ran and went to the gym almost daily. If you want it bad enough, you can do anything. Keepign it up long term is pretty hard, but you will get some fill eventually.

    FAILURE WITH LAP-BAND

Sorry to hear about your struggles! It's not easy. But the more I'm on these boards the more I realize that almost EVERYONE struggles by gaining weight at one time or another (sometimes a little, sometimes a LOT). It doesn't mean you're a failure or you've done anything wrong, it just means you're human. The good news though is I've also read lots of stories of people who have come back from weight gain and lost all or most of it again! So it's okay if you slipped now, you can still get back to where you were! I would recommend going back to your dr (or a new one if your surgeon retired). They are so used to seeing this that they won't be surprised or disappointed - it's just part of the journey. And the surgeons want to help you be successful, so they can help you get back on track. (If you don't have that experience, get a new dr, please don't let anyone make you feel bad about it). The other thing is getting back to basics. Go back to all the band 101 rules. The band is a great but imperfect tool. Good luck, I believe you can both succeed!

    Swollen ankles

I'm glad to hear that you went to the doctor and are getting things checked out. It is best to get some answers. If you don't already know, prednisone will cause a temporary weight gain so don't be alarmed if you don't lose while on it.
  17. Has ANYONE else found that medications they were on was partly to blame for their slow weight loss? I am 18 mos out from banding and have only lost 12-15 pounds - and that was during the pre-op diet - haven't gained or lost since surgery. This is VERY frustrating to me. No, I am not a perfect eater, and no, I don't exercise religiously. I'm also not blaming my slow weight loss entirely on medications. However, I do take Paxil and birth control daily. Are these making it more difficult to lose the weight, than if I weren't on them? I know there is documented proof that weight gain is a side effect of birth control; however, that is not a side effect listed on my information from the pharmacy for the Paxil. Although, I have heard many, many times that anti-depressants can cause weight gain. So, if they cause weight gain, is there a chance that they are hindering my weight loss? I have given up so many things (ice cream, pop, etc.)that I feel I should have lost SOME weight by now. What do you think?? Please let me know - I'd like someone to either validate my concern or tell me I'm crazy. Thanks
  18. *I* ate in school cafeterias. So did my brothers, the older of which is *still* 8 years younger than me, so I'm rather well-versed in having to play ersatz daddy to a teenager (since his wasn't around). We ate Breakfast at the schools, including a fair amount of sugar, fat, and starch. I drank soft drinks, and not the diet ones. Lots of sweets. I even went for seconds. I didn't do sports beyond seasonal marching band (walk, stand for a few minutes, blow a horn -- it didn't do anything to curb weight gain). I ate more even in college, where my breakfast of choice was a root beer, OJ, and candy bar. Still, that didn't get me where I am today. Nor do I think it got him there. Nor am I at all persuaded about his friends being feeders. Nobody I have ever known, even from sketchy or over-full households, ever had the level of autonomy at 14 years that you suggest. Now ask yourself how long it took for the boy to reach his current state -- I doubt it took less than two years to gain 400# (possible, yes, but unlikely). So what was he doing at 11, and what the heck was his mother doing? What sort of parenting did she engage in? Again, unless this was some sudden onset, the mother would have a large amount of fault there. There is no reasonable path to his condition that doesn't imply significant neglect on his mother's part. For the record, she would have been entirely in her rights to exercise authority over where the child went and what he did there -- the law would back that up until he reached his majority.
  19. 20. Hi! Paxil is a NOTORIOUS weight gainer! You're lucky you've been able to keep the 12 lbs. off that you lost. I've seen many people gain 5-10 lbs. A MONTH on Paxil. Of course, this doesn't happen to everyone, but Paxil has gained the reputation as one of the antidepressants that can cause the most weight gain. While everyone is different, have you tried Lexapro? In MOST patients it is weight neutral and in some can help w/weight loss at the beginning of use. Good Luck! Give yourself a pat on the back that you have been able to keep that intial weight loss and not gain more. One thing I will say, though, never stop taking your meds without talking to your doctor and you will probably have to be weaned off the Paxil slowly, in increments, if that's what you and your doctor decide.

Why can't we keep it off naturally?

Obesity is a time-dependent problem...this essentially means the longer a person's been obese, the less likely he/she'll maintain a weight loss after diet and exercise. Assume we have two 40-year-old women. Both are 5'5" and weigh 300 pounds with identical body fat percentages. The difference is one woman's been obese since childhood while the other one was thin all her life until massive weight gain during pregnancy in her mid 30s. The woman who's been obese since childhood is unlikely to maintain a major weight loss without surgery. Her body's had 30+ years to hormonally adopt obesity as its default state. If/when she enters a weight-reduced state with diet/exercise, her body fights to return to 300 pounds (and usually succeeds). Meanwhile, the woman who has been obese for a few years has a better chance of losing and keeping weight off. Her body hasn't had time to adapt to the potent hormonal influences of obesity. Diane Carbonell is a woman who was thin/average-sized until she became obese (300+ pounds) in adulthood after several pregnancies. She lost weight the old-fashioned way via diet/exercise and has kept it off since the late 1990s. I suspect her body never really had a chance to become acclimated to obesity since she wasn't fat for a terribly long time: http://www.dianecarbonell.com/
  22. Hi all - I had my vertical sleeve done on 8/28. I ended up staying two nights because I couldn't keep any liquids down on the second day. I finally started feeling much better and was released today! Quick question - I weighed myself as soon as I got home from the hospital and have gained 8 pounds!!! How is that possible only drinking a small amount of Clear Liquids?? So discouraging!
  23. I was off a full week after surgery. I recoup pretty well, but I don't think I could have gone back to work as quick as you did. I was feeling pretty good at home 5 days post op. You should start to notice a difference within a few days. Just take things as easy as you can. When you go to the doctor tomorrow. Be sure to ask what to eat. I'm sure they will tell you, but just incase they don't, ask. I was able to move to full liquids at your stage. Most doctors give the first fill around 6 weeks post op. I didn't gain weight during this time, but I didn't lose much either. If you haven't started logging your food on one of the online sites (fitday, dailyplate, sparkpeople and I'm sure there are more) this is a good time to start. You will get hungry soon (I was hungry from the time I walked in the door from surgery) but if you record and make good selections, you should be able to maintain or at least keep the weight gain to a minimum. I hope you're feeling better soon.

    Out to Eat....

Hey Lumpy....just be aware that the sodium count on the crab is through the roof. I remember when I looked at that info because I also thought the steamed crab would be a good choice and it was calorie wise. But it's really high in sodium so don't be surprised if you have Water weight gain. For me, I find the fish...grilled...is a better choice. It's why when I'm eating out in Jersey, I now go to Bonefish Grill more than Red Lobster.

    Well...this is unexpected....

Just make sure you stay out of ketosis. Eat carbs. Ketosis can and does cause fetal brain damage, and an entire slew of birth defects, and make sure to take your bariatric Vitamins. The risk of birth defects with WLS patients is 50-60% higher because of Vitamin and nutrient deficiencies. This is why it's so important to wait, and while I understand the concern about weight gain, you'll have to consume enough to support your body and the developing baby which may slow the losing. I'm almost 22 months out, and tomorrow will hit 9weeks pregnant. I was released at 8 months post-op to TTC, I was also below goal, my labs were/are stellar, and I was getting into maintenance. It took 14 months to conceive. I've only gained 3lbs in 9 weeks, and they want me to gain 30 pounds, they actually wanted me to gain 10-12lbs the first trimester, least say I doubt I can put on 9 more pounds in the next 3 weeks. I'm already eating 1800 calories a day, juicing to get in extra calories/nutrients because even at 22 months I struggle to eat enough food. Please take care of yourself. The baby will pull from your body, fat reserves and muscle mass this early after surgery and most "early out" WLS babies do well, it's the mommy's body that suffers the most. Make sure to have your dental check ups regularly so they can watch for decay, and weakened teeth. Congrats on the pregnancy and best wishes for a healthy pregnancy and delivery.
