  1. Sounds like we had our surgeries around the same time. I got to my lowest weight of 164 lbs. About a year after surgery. I started out at 325. I gained back about 10 lbs over the last 2 years, and I felt fine in the 170s. I knew that I wasn’t eating my best though- I was eating whatever I wanted in small portions. That’s not how I wanted to live, and I didn’t feel my best. So 2 weeks ago I tried out the 10 Day Pouch Reset diet- not to shrink my pouch, but to get back control of my eating. I ended up losing 6 lbs during those 10 days. I decided to continue eating clean by cutting out most carbs and wine, and sticking with vegetarian way of eating. I feel great and I lost a few more pounds! So I just thought I’d let you know what worked for me- Good luck! You can do whatever you set your mind to! We have already proven that we can be successful after surgery, sometimes we just need to remind ourselves that we are bariatric patients for life who have to constantly work towards maintaining our new bodies and minds!

    Ideal vs Best body weight

    Yeah, it does help explain why the humblebraggers (omg I can only eat 4 calories a week, uguise, I couldn't imagine eating 5! - we've all seen them here) may find it all coming flying back in their faces. They never last long. Unfortunately, they left a trail of shame and self-doubt in those struggling to keep calories down.

    Depressed, Sad and Stalled....Need Help Please

    Sometimes life just throws crap at you. Family, health, work, world issues, etc. can turn everything upside down & we look to old habits which offered comfort in the past. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this now after you had made such great progress. Don’t let the crap win. It probably all seems a huge mountain you have to start to climb again but you’ve actually already started. You know what the crap is & how it’s affected you. You know the old habits you’ve fallen back on & the new ones you’ve let slide. Make one change today to reincorporate one of those new habits. Then reincorporate another one next week . Go for a walk, get your protein in, get your fluids in, drop a snack or swap out a meal choice or whatever you’re ready to do each week. You’ll get there & you’ve great motivators in your children.     Hi Friends, I'm 8 months post RNY. SW 308 lbs, CW 213 lbs. Height 159 cm. I was on a steady losing path until Jan this year due to my walking (10k) daily. However, we had a bad family fight in Jan which has led to me being depressed and lethargic. I've kinda stalled since then and there has been zero progress. I'm scared I'm throwing all this away and fearful since I'm overeating and not losing. Any advice on how to kickstart my weight loss again please. My goal weight is 150 lbs and I really want to do this for my kids. Please help me

I guess I need to stop the humor on this site.     I stalled for a long time (several months) and I am within healthy weight range so I figured I was now at maintenance. I stopped weighing myself so often because I’m not obsessed about it…. BUT…. I guess I started losing again because I am at 173 this morning. If I reach 155 that is an unhealthy range for my height. So I am still twenty pounds from an unhealthy range and I have to pick up the calories before I get there and drop below that threshold. (family wise: my moms side of the family tends to be very thin and they usually fall below the norm BMI weight ratio) as far as activity: I don’t go out of my way to exercise but I am very active during the day. I am on my feet all day as a teacher, I go out and play handball/basketball with my students during recess and lunch, constantly walking across our large campus, and rotating the classroom all day as well. I swim and go to the beach with my own kids or hike with them on weekends. I’m definitely not sedentary but I’m not running any 5ks either. My joints are still damaged and I have to be careful. the nurse recommended strength training with resistance bands to help maintain muscle mass. she didn’t tell me NOT to loose more weight, she just told me that I should be looking towards improving my calorie count so my body doesn’t go into starvation mode and messing with my metabolism. i guess I will just have to throw in some snacks and get used to brushing my teeth a zillion times a day. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’ve been looking up higher calorie healthy foods and I’ll try some out next week

    March surgery buddies

    Hi I had my gastric bypass 3/16. I am 2 days into my Purée Stage. The liquid stage was easy in the beginning but toward the end it was becoming boring. Your stomach is smaller so liquid phase wasn’t difficult for me as much as boring-I was ready for Stage 2. I was really excited to have some purée food and I started with 8oz of skim milk with 1/2 tablespoon of Hershey’s simply 5 syrup. It was delicious and I am NOT a milk drinker. The milk counted toward my water allotment and honestly that is the MOST difficult part so far. You have drink but stop 1/2 hr before a meal than wait 1/2 hr after your (20 minute meal). There are some factors to consider to eat proper for nourishment and hydration. I lost 11 lbs. in a week so it’s working. YOU will lose weight. How is everyone else doing?

    I just read your update from 5/21, and it was so helpful…I read most of your posts. Thank you for taking the time to write so completely of your experience. I appreciate it so much. You are almost a yeSr out now, and I don’t know if you’ll see this, but I had to laugh at your liverwurst craving soon after your surgery. When I was of with my first, 43 yrs ago, I had a liverwurst sandwich every.single.day for lunch. 🤣 I haven’t had one since, but I ate it for 36 weeks. She, to this day, has an amazing memory. I’m convinced it’s the liverwurst sandwiches. Thank you again, and I hope you are well.

    Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺

    So I had been taking the medication (Omeprazole/Prilosec) for 5+ years. About a month before the sleeve surgery I was required to stop taking it for 2 weeks in order to take an H-Pylori test. I stopped cold turkey and never took it again either before or after surgery. I had an endoscopy 18 months after WLS, I can't remember why, and my surgeon showed my evidence of GERD anymore. I never restarted taking it.

    I am intrigued by how varied each insurance company and surgeon requirements are by reading what we all must do. I did have an appointment to weigh in at the bariatric center and to meet the surgeon and have my picture taken. So many start a liquid diet three weeks out or more, just 3 days for me. It's all kinda crazy.

    1 yr out food

    I looked it up on MFP, and the week of my 1 year anniversary, I averaged 2200 calories a day. Mind you, at the time, I was running min 5k almost every day, and some strength training, and a host of other activities keeping me active. I was 115 lbs at 1 yr (I’m 5’2” female). Today, Im 3.5 years out and i average about 1800-ish cals a day…adjusted because i am no where near as active as I used to be. This morning I weighed 118.8 (I’m still a 5’2” female, lol) Regarding calories, it’s actually quite easy to rack those up in a day. If you eat low-volume, high-calorie foods, you can reach 1700 cals in no time (nuts, oils, cheese, avocados, etc). Heck, I ate about a cup of chicharron/pork rinds the other day that totalled 600 calories…and it had 67g of protein and zero carbs, if that interests you. It will take time and getting used to, but you’ll get there eventually. So long as your labs come back fine and your doctor is not concerned for your health, i figure you should be ok taking your own time to reach calorie goals. Good Luck! ❤️
  17. That's a good idea! Thanks for the suggestion. My insurance should cover a repair that isn't actually bariatric surgery. I wonder if the surgeon could do a bypass and my secondary would pick it up when my primary doesn't. I'll have to research more about it. I have an appt. with a surgeon in a couple weeks. Who is your surgeon?

    Don't over think it, This fear (GERD) drove me to have a melt down right before surgery and to be highly anxious for weeks after surgery. I had reflux before surgery for many years and had been on 20-40 mg of Nexium daily for about 15 years and as my weight got higher so did the occurrence of my reflux to the point of along with the Nexium I was going through a bottle of Gaviscon a week. fast forward 8 months post op I still take 20 mg Nexium daily but only because I am to scared to tapper off as I remember the rebound reflux from prior to surgery when I would try to come off them and I have to be honest I suck a Gaviscon dual tablet if I get the slightest inkling of reflux which I think half the time is in my head lol. So prior to surgery I told my surgeon reflux was my biggest fear as I didn't want a bypass either and I certainly didn't want to have to have a second surgery, He said the weight loss would reduce the reflux and I think he is right. its just my own fears and thinking about it and sometimes eating the wrong things or too much that causes me get reflux now and its pretty mild. Now I am going to say this and I don't mean any offence to anyone as it is just what I have observed, a lot people who have had revision surgery due to GERD/reflux also seem to have had a substantial weight gain too, now if anyone out there has experienced different I stand corrected but that's what I have noticed. So that is a pretty good incentive for me not to regain. Talk to your surgeon though as he/she is the best to advise you we can only share our experiences

    Not losing weight

    I meant pre-op. I’m still in the beginning phase. I haven’t gotten my surgery date yet. Update on this…I did see my surgeon today. Although I was worried, he wasn’t upset. I did manage to lose 1.8 pounds. Mother Nature did come this week and I was bloated. Also, I have been losing more than he asked the previous months so we are just going to shake it off this month and move forward through this stall. Thanks everyone.

    Pre & Post Workout Meals

    I remember watching a documentary on obesity (can’t remember its name) & a doctor pointing out that obese people have been weight training 7 days a week for years as they carried around their weight. I was rather surprised but it makes sense when you think about it. The difference is when you do weights at a gym you use different muscle. Plus as you lose weight, your posture improves as your centre of balance changes so you may have to retrain muscles, tendons, etc, too. But in answer to your question: protein. Your body uses protein for recovery & healing, and muscle & bone health & growth. There’s some information about now saying that your body can’t absorb more than 25g of protein at a time & excess is stored as fat. Something to take into consideration. Congrats on your weight loss so far.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

    So good to hear about the success. Overall I am good, but I cannot say my diet is the healthiest. I find eating carbs to be way too easy to digest and my sedentary life style working home all day in front of a computer doesn't help. I am depressed that it seems way too easy to eat more food now, such as whole (store-bought) burrito in one sitting, or two pieces of pizza instead of just one, or a fairly large salad. My little egg-sized stomach has definitely stretched. 😞 I also starting drinking Diet Coke in the morning. For three years I didn't touch it, but recently I starting drinking the mini Cokes--only one in the morning--and was surprised there were no repercussions, so that is my indulgence when I start my work day. Unfortunately, the Girl Scout cookies also seem to be digesting all too well. I did undergo a panniculectomy and a breast reduction and feel so much better since I did that. The relentless neck pain from carrying the weight of the breasts and the back ache from the stomach skin pretty much disappeared. My arms and thighs are still scary large and saggy but I just don't think I have the bravery to do another plastic surgery. It was rough! One very upsetting side effect (other than I still have thinning hair) are that I have had four kidney stones since last May. Dr. Google confirmed that there is a correlation between gastric bypass and an increase in kidney stones. They are crippling, and from what I understand, an intake of animal protein is partly to blame. I absolutely need to consciously drink more water so would LOVE to hear y'all's tips and tricks for remembering to drink water!

    Not gonna lie...I had a food funeral that lasted a few weeks (ok maybe more like a month) so I actually put on weight right before my pre op diet started. On the day of surgery, I was exactly 40. My doctor said my moderate sleep apnea was a co-morbidity (sleep apnea was discovered during sleep study required in my pre op testing) so I could actually be 35. I worried that since I was not doing anything to prevent the sleep apnea (i.e., CPAP), they could still deny me at 35. The hoops insurance puts us through is ridiculous!

    It always amazes me how different insurance companies can be on their requirements! My BMI was 37, and I had to be over 35 with a preexisting condition(mild sleep apnea). Also, everyone's programs and length of phases are so different. I was in full liquids for two weeks, and now I'm on purred foods for a month!! Such a long time.

    Post op day 4 complications

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

    3.5 weeks post op revision to bypass for severe GERD, down 14 pounds, which I'm super thrilled about! In the past couple of days I've started to feel fairly normal physically. The biggest mind trip is getting full on 2 oz of deli meat. If I eat any more than that I feel miserable. No problems getting my fluids in. I went back to work last week and felt good but this week I can tell I'm back to full strength. I even started walking on the track at the adults only community center I joined (and health insurance pays for). The Y has a track too but it's always sooooo loud and busy.
