    Liver Cleanse

I don't know if there is any validity to the whole pre-op diet/liver prep/cleanse idea or not, but my doc doesn't have any special pre-op diet and he's a liver specialist who does transplants when not doing bariatrics, so he tends to be rather anal about liver health (as in no alcohol period during the 12-18 month weight loss time, etc.) Or, maybe he's just more skilled in that area so that whatever minor differences such pre-op treatment makes is insignificant to him.
  2. I have no issues going out to dinner....My wife and I do it frequently since we both work. Plus there is always events with people at work. I don't hold back on alcohol...and as far as eating, everyone knows I have become very self-conscious about not eating junk, not making a pig of myself, and that I have become a big health nut, always looking for natural, wholesome foods. Thay have also seen the benefits and respect me very much for being a unique individual, and being so fit and healthy for someon my age. if I don't feel like eating, I simply say there is nothing on the menu that interests me....or, while everyone is having a 3-course meal, I may be happy with a cup of soup and an appetizer.... I should add, from the beginning I have told no one I had WLS...a lot easier that way. But again, people respect and perhaps admire my choices...and secretly I believe some are envious. \ I know I always used to be when being around such people. I have read posts like this before...where is it written that one must be a gluttonous pig to be socially acceptable? I think that all falls into the bad ways of advertising-marketing, or how society has gone askew, whatever. I watch TV ads for pizza and such and have to ask "Who eat's this crap?" Same is true when I go out....if someone at the table is eating a sloppy, greasy burger all I can think is "Really??" Probably what people used to think about me, I'm sure...
  3. I've read about the empty calories but never the alcohol part of it. Maybe it's also to make sure you don't have anything carbonated...like a cooler or something mixed with it. Not sure, I rarely drink but I would still like to know that I could have one if I felt like it.

How soon after can i drink?

I am a little less than one month out from surgery and last weekend I went out clubbin and did shots(tequila & washington apple) I can't remember how may I had but it was several. I didn't have any problems. The weekend before that I was at a party and had a few mixed drinks (crandberry and vodka) without any trouble. I wasn't thinking and grabbed a beer and that didn't go so well... I just felt like I had to burp but could for a bout 15 minutes (pretty uncomfortable) but then I let out a wicked burp and felt better. Needless to say I will be much more careful to avoid beer. Now what I will say is be cause of the high calories in alcohol if I go out drinking then the next day I run an extra mile and try to tack on an extra 25-30 minutes to my exercise routine. It kicks my ass but I reason it out in my mind that if I want to party I am going to have to pay for it.

    Las Vegas/alcohol

Great post DLC and patty. I was going to say that I was told the ratio as well is 1:3 so every drink an rny pt has is = to 3. My dietician and surgeon said that I could have a drink once in a while and there is some merit in a small glass of red wine now and again providing health benefits but we all have to be carefully and remember moderation. My rule now is any alcohol and keys go to someone else period. I havnt had a drink but am going to world EMS expo in new Orleans in October and will have a drink. Great post Surgiversary 07/24/12 Sent from my iPhone.

    Las Vegas/alcohol

Alcohol I drink in the summer & that's only if we go out so like every 6 months. Piña colada with rum. Vodka with cranberry juice sounds good. Also it's not soda which has a lot of sugar.

    oh no

I dunno how many weeks you are out from surgery but I'm about 9 and my doctor oked alcohol in moderation and even suggested rum amd diet coke for the low calories. Where I'm from, the glass is mostly rum with a spritz of diet coke. If you're not feeling any pain I'd say you're probably okay.

    oh no

If it was just a sip nothing will happen. No worries love. You may get a little gas but that's about all. :-) Don't make habit of drinking carbonated drinks as it can stretch your tummy and alcohol is just not good for your little tummy :-) be well

  11. how long after your surgery did your tape come off of your incissions? I am 12 days post op and my tape is still on and going strong.... i have been having some burning/pain sensations near my biggest incission and really feel it is being caused by the surgical tape. the surgeon said to leave them on until they fall off on their own. Only one has fallen off and it was the smallest incission up near my breast bone--most likely from being hit with my bra everytime I went to put it on. They look awful! No matter how many alcohol swabs I use I cant get the sticky grey residue off my skin. They look dirty from my clothes rubbing up against them as well. I have my first post op appointment on Thursday so Im going to address it then, but what about the rest of you? How long did it take?

When is the right time for divorce?

Thanks for the input. My husband has my name tatootted all over his body if you know what I mean. He is great if I was 80 and needed my diaper changed. As far as romantic love we have some serious sex issues. He has errectial dysfunction and needs to be on meds to last more than 1 minute. This is of huge concern of mine because I am very sexual. The affair didn't help with this matter of course. The kids will be okay but I need hin to change, I just am not sure what to do other than therapy. I told my family today what was going on so that is good. i am mostly concerned about my older son who has dabbked in drugs. I meet his new counselor on Friday, My continued committment are my kids and my sobriety first (alcoholism) coupled with some individual therapy and marriage counseling, This is a huge breaking point for me. I almost left my husband 3 years ago so it is startng all over agai but I am much more serious this time.

    New Convert of the Sleeved

Full disclosure: I am going through a lot of emotions with this and well...a bit like an alcoholic, the world is full of temptation. My nutritionist and surgeon have an all or nothing approach. Now I very well KNOW that I will never, ever be able to eat at the same level I used to, nor should I be able to. But it was the lack of compromise that got me. It being all or nothing. Black and white. Like...I can't have the things I like in *some* moderation as long as I behave myself? And there may be things I avoid because I can no longer tolerate them. It just feels like I'll have to miss out on a lot if I want to stick to this diet faithfully. I live in the south, land of chicken fried steak so....yeah. I may feel differently as time goes on, but I just had to whine and vent. I signed up for this. I knew what I was getting into mostly. But I know the nutritionist won't be sympathetic to my struggles and will be a hard@$$ about it. What's the point of missing out on one of life's greatest pleasures, which is food? I feel like I will barely want to leave my own house without the promise of a treat like Taco Bell or a burger anymore. Just feeling bitter that I had to do this. Wish I'd postponed or...I dunno. I just...don't know.

    social life?

I think after three months, I was (with careful planning) able to go out and have drinks and appetizers with friends. I would order a shrimp cocktail or seared ahi or even chicken wings (naked) and a martini, or a glass of wine which I sipped very slowly. I even went out for mexican food and ordered shrimp fajitas and ate just the shrimp and refried beans. Okay, it took three meals to eat all of the shrimp and beans...I took home the leftovers! Now, I bring a carb smart tortilla in my purse, so I can make a little shrimp taco...YUM!! If you host the event, no one would notice if you were drinking flavored water or something other than alcohol and you could make sure there was something you could eat, if not freely, at least without fear! So host a game night with your neighbors!

    Sleeve or bypass?!?

I've lost 100 pounds since my sleeve surgery on October 8. Have about 40 to go. Not a doubt in my mind I will hit my goal. But, here's the deal. I don't cheat...ever. I don't drink pop, alcohol, no caffeine, and get my calories from good, healthy food. I don't look for ways to get around my sleeve. I also bust my tail at the gym 5 days a week. The sleeve seemed by far the most "natural" procedure. Just my opinion though. I took this surgery VERY seriously. My blood work is optimal now. I no longer have sleep apnea. I feel like a new person. But, as I'm sure you've read, none of these procedures are a silver bullet. You choose what you eat, how much, and how often. But it has definitely served as "guard rails" for me. The sleeve has helped me learn how to eat like a healthy person should. The sleeve also seems to have the fewest complications from what I've read. Bypass patients seem to have an unnatural look to them at times. Again, just my opinion. I'd tell you to make sure you're totally committed t this before moving forward. Good luck.

    Lap-band and your significant other

Move ON .... sorry if that sounds rough or rude. but it would be like being a recovering alcoholic and your friend getting mad because you would not have a drink to celebrate his birthday. maybe youcould try to explain it in a way he/she would understand but I'm betting you have already tried that. Good Luck with what ever you decide
  17. I watched most of it last night - will finish it today. Really good detailed reasoning and physiological and psychological information. I especially liked the information about why alcohol effects you differently after surgery - that has been super helpful in understanding. Addictive personality is in my genes (Strong genetics in Finnish decent) and I have always been cautious with alcohol (but ignored the food aspect till now). will continue vigilance after sleeve .. but know myself enough it will probably be an occasional indulgence

    Communion wine?

Check with your doctor or nutritionist about drinking wine. Communion wine is a very tiny sip of wine, and that won't hurt anyone, even a new post-op person (Again, check with your doctor about this). The wafer however contains wheat (It has to by Canon law) and wheat products can cause blockage issues in people with a Lap-Band. Taking either the wine, the wafer, or both is completed communion according to the Catholic Church. I know some Catholics who cannot take the wine due to being recovering alcoholics, and I know two who cannot take the wafer due to wheat allergies, so they take the one that is not an issue for them.

    Defeating The Vsg

I'm having premium, high-fat ice cream with fudge sauce for Breakfast with potato chips for texture. For a snack, a couple candy bars. For lunch I'm having a prime steak drizzled with 1/4 cup of butter. For a snack, a cake (I'll just keep eating until it's gone.) For dinner, foie gras for starters, then chicken alfredo (heavy on the fredo) french fries, and for dessert, pecan pie with whipped cream. After, I'll have as much alcohol as I can drink until I pass out. Sounds disgusting. I'd die before I'd eat that way again.

    My liquid multi has alcohol?

Interesting and somewhat surprising. I have no idea if it is good or bad medically but maybe you can avoid it in the future. I am taking the Wellesse liquid multi-Vitamin which uses Erythritol (I looked after reading your question!). A web search shows that to be a natural sugar alcohol with the least impact on blood sugar. Maybe give it a try once you run out of Centrum.

    wine, cup of coffee

I drink coffee, diet coke and alcohol-all in moderation. I didn't drink much alcohol until I was close to goal. At this point though I'm trying to get Kcal in to maintain and quit losing! Nice problem right? I don't mind being this amazingly thin but almost nobody knows about my surgery and is sorta watching me and freaking out. Anyway, the only rule I followed was 60 grams of protein everyday. I didn't get all the water in, but tried. I didn't stop eating carbs, bubbly things or coffee. I drink when I eat and I eat carbs in moderation. However, I find I don't have much room for carbs when I'm pounding the protein down. The other thing I did was exercise. Anyway, in my brain those are the most important things. Its been 8 months and its still a honeymoon!

    wine, cup of coffee

Your dr. sound VERY similar to mine. I was told no alcohol until at least 1 year post-op (I'm 10 months now and haven't had a drop of alcohol or soda since before surgery) I was told to say goodbye to caffeine forever and now I do drink 1 cup of decaf a day (decaf still has small amts of caffeine). My dr. also doesn't believe in the liver-shrinking diet and said my liver was beautiful when he was in there...lol. I think follow your surgeon's guidelines and use your own common sense. If caffeine or alcohol are slippery slopes for you then maybe give yourself more time before partaking. While they are not slippery slopes for me (I truly had no problem giving them up, as I'm not a big drinker anyway, diet soda was harder than alcohol for me, but I did it anyway, cold turkey too!) I just felt it was in my best interests to not give myself tiny amounts of something that my body doesn't even need. You will figure out what works best for you and your sleeve.

Not sure how I feel about this

I can totally relate to this!!! Oh, and for the record, I saw that post the other day too and I agree... It's fun to say "oh thanks! I've lost 40 lbs" but now at 75 lbs lost, I am really embarrassed, which I didn't see that part coming. I'm in pharmaceutical sales (which is known to have the stigma of very pretty/good looking people in it ) and I'm like you... I was not prepared for my "story" that I was going to tell people. Nobody said anything until I had dropped about 45-50lbs and then out of nowhere, some of my doctors and nurses I see weekly all started the "what's your secret?" (To which I always want to respond with... Well funny story, I had 75% of my stomach removed! It works wonders!) hahaha... Anyway, in the beginning, I started to overthink it or wonder if they could tell I was lying or if they suspected I had surgery. Now, I have the same story everytime... "I've cut out sugar, carbs, caffeine and alcohol as much as possible, I lift weights 5 days a week and I run/walk a lot. All of these are true! Practice your story a few times in your car on the way to work... Keep it consistent... Also, my advice is to never give people exactly how much weight you've lost... I stopped telling numbers after about 52lbs ...I always say "oh I only weigh myself every few weeks and try not to obsess about the number but just go by how my clothes fit!" I had surgery on December 17th of this past year and if people start to ask when I started dieting, I tell them September/October so my weight loss seems more realistic. Nobody has questioned me once! Here is a before/after and here is one from last weekend.

    Calorie confusion

Ok, on MFP I range from 21 grams of fat to my worst day of 42 (I ate 3 oz of pork steak which even though I cut the fat off MFP still counts it). Here is my program's plan for regular foods (which starts this coming Tuesday for me had I followed their timeline) 3 meals a day. 20 G of Protein AT LEAST per meal with a goal of 60-70 per day. Less than 40 G of carbs. No specific goal on fat, but remember to eat lean meats and cut fat off of fattier ones. Approximately 800 calories max a day. Their sample meal plan for this stage however includes a light Breakfast sandwich made with egg white, turkey sausage, and a whole wheat english muffin. According to MFP, this meal consists of 27.5 carbs, 250 calories, and only 12 grams of protein! This is using Thomases muffin, jimmy dean turkey sausage, and great value egg whites. This would leave me with only 13 carbs left forthe day and not enough protein in my first meal. Calculating this has seriously made me feel like my program has not considered their plan thoroughly. Although they are a center for excellence. The timeline is 2 weeks liquids (nothing particles or cream) 1 week thick liquids (include thin yogurt, cream soups) 1 week pureed foods (still pretty thin) 1 week mushy foods (applesauce consistency) 1 week soft foods (for some reason can include very very toasted bread chewed to a paste-like substance and iceburg lettuce) After 6 week appt can do all foods except: Pasta til month 4, corn, fresh fruits and veg until month 2, steak until 6 months, other lettuces in month 2, alcohol for 1 year, carbonated drinks 4 motnhs if ever. I think that is everything. Also, the NUTs give differing food intake advice from the PA. I haven't seen the surgeon since I was in the hospital. My program farms people through efficiently so the surgeon is not a very important part of the program after he performs the surgery. B
  25. I have a very supportive husband who would gladly not bring any food I asked him not to into our home, he is also a recovering alcoholic (sober for 15yrs). Just as he never asked or expected me to never drink in front I him I never ask or expect him not to indulge in front of me. It sucks that we both have these addictions but the reality is that it is what it is & we both face it one day at a time. We find emotional support from each other, even if it is while he is having a cheeseburger & I am having a light beer lol!
