  1. I couldn't tolerate plain water or artificial sweeteners for 4 months, so I did decaf herbal tea, broths, Bai5, diluted 100% fruit juice, milk, drinkable yogurt like Siggis or Kefir, diluted vitamin water and Lifewater, pedialyte, coconut water, and added sweet-leaf flavor drops to my water. Not to mention all of the protein shakes, including Raw Fit, Raw Protein, Spirutein, and Syntrax Nectar Naturals.

Did I do the right thing?

Brianna, I am sorry you are having to deal with what sounds like an non-supportive partner. You are correct, I cannot understand the food addiction aspects of the struggle. I have been eating healthy several years, and what caused my obesity was medication. However, I do understand the having to cook food for the family and them wanting fast food. And I can tell you what I have done in the past. But first off, let me say your boyfriend's lack of support may be just lack of knowledge. My husband said the same thing a long time ago, why should I have to change because you are? And I said you are correct, you shouldn't "have to" and left it at that. What I did was make meals that were healthier for me in terms of options, that is if I was making steak, potatoes, and a veggie, I would only eat steak and veggie, or make a killer salad to cut my steak over, or even eat part of a sweet potato. If they wanted fast food, I would go, order a burger with extra lettuce and no bun, or a taco salad no shell, etc. etc. Did you know that McDonald's has egg white? who knew, the things you find out just by asking. Not people will look crazy at you sometimes, but what the hell. What happened with my family is they would see all these great looking things they wanted to try that I was making for myself. Like the loaded salad, or even the Greek yogurt, or spaghetti made with spaghetti squash rather than noodle, or the Pasta or rice dishes that I subbed with cauliflower. Slowly over time, things changed. They were ogling my food, and requesting that I make more of that. My husband finally said it made him feel left out when I would get so involved with making my own food, despite we were all sitting at the table. He then told me to just make everyone's food the way I make mine, and I did. Granted I still bake Desserts and give them the other stuff from time to time, but it was a fairly smooth transition. Years later, him and the kids don't remember when they started eating Greek yogurt, or drinking 2 percent milk, or cottage cheese with fruit in it. They don't know why they request spaghetti squash spaghetti or mashed cauliflower. And nobody is upset that some of the ingredients are sugar free or fat free or all natural. I say all of that to say that sometimes for those on the outside, being supportive for something like this is very new, and you have to move forward regardless. There are thousands of recipes for making healthy, delicious options out there. And many restaurants have healthier options or foods which you can transform by taking something out. Make this work for you.
  3. @@DDN Ha ha ha!!! How is my pre op diet going?! I'm getting to the point that if I drink another shake, I might float away down the Mississippi River ( I'm in central Illinois)!! Each program is different as is every surgeon. I'm lucky that I have unlimited veggies, just no starchy ones. I'm allowed yogurt, clear broth, and applesauce. No meat, no carbs, no sweets. 4 shakes a day, and 6 small servings from the limited food list. It's more generous than others who have liquid only and NO FOOD. It's worth it. We all will be so relieved, happy, challenged, and on our way to a healthier lifestyle. My surgery is two fold; I have a multi-spinal injury. My neurosurgeon told me bluntly that my surgery would all rip out and fail with in two yrs if i stayed at my former weight (I've lost 34# during my 6 months pre op). I do not want to be paralyzed or a useless person in society, so I decided to do this surgery and regain my former life before this horrible spinal accident happened. I'm so determined and focused. Well, gee! I talked way too long and too much. I guess it was just so kind you asked, so I guess I just got on a role ????!! Good luck to you and I'm glad you don't have a very difficult pre op diet to do. (I'm very envious????)

    My day finally came!

My surgery was Tuesday the 26th no pain medication since leaving hospital. Alittle nausea here and there woke and did take a pill for this morning. Alot better tonight think I tried to hard to get clear liquid protein in last night ruff night very uncomfortable. Start stage 2 tomorrow can add yogurt and premier shakes which I really liked before surgery
  5. The first 2 months I weighed every meal/snack at 2 oz. (1/4 cup) When my capacity or satisfied level got a little greater I weighed stuff to 2.5 oz. After the first few months I could more easily gauge when to stop... I am at 10 months and still cant eat more than 3.5 to 4 oz per meal of solid meat and veggies, a little more of yogurt or softer foods. I know for a fact that if I burp, one single burp, that I am done. If take even one or two little bites after that I end up being slightly uncomfortable or downright overly full. I actually love that little burp by now.... I will take a bite and still be chewing and up comes this little burp and I tell my DH "Well, I guess I am done". He likes it too, lol, because he usually eats my leftovers. He is blessed with the metabolism to eat seconds, lucky guy.

    Liver shrink diet

My liver shrink diet is for 1 week so feeling lucky. 3oz lean meat and 1 fruit (half banana, small apple, or cup melon) for breakfast, 1 string cheese and fruit for snack, 2oz lean meat and cup cooked veggie (preferably green leafy) or 2 cup raw veggies for lunch, 8 oz high protein milk or 6 oz Greek non-fat yogurt for snack, and 2oz lean meat and half cup cooked or 1 cup raw veggies for dinner. Dill pickles, sugar free popsicles are freebies. Day before surgery will be all liquids and magnesium citrate. I don't care for dill pickles but had to break and go get some to stop my tummy from rumbling at bedtime. Can't wait for 2/2. Good luck to everyone.

    Liver shrink diet

I start mine on Tuesday. Protein shake for breakfast, another for lunch, along with either a half cup of sugar free pudding or applesauce. Afternoon snack of 4oz of light yogurt. Dinner is 2oz of chicken or turkey and 1 cup of veggies. Sugar free popsicles are allowed to help get your 64oz of liquids. I am really nervous that I'll be soo hungry. I am going to stick to it. I want no chance of them rescheduling the surgery if I don't!!

Lap band won't allow all of the fill

Do you ever get stuck? food getting backed up to your stoma? You should have an occasional stuck episode with a band so tight! If not, you have a right to wonder why you're not feeling restriction or satiety. Your diet could use some tweaking with some fresh foods and less slider foods. Yogurt slides right through the band as does Protein drinks. Still, you should be experiencing some level of satiety. Good luck with the doc visit!

    Yogurt....I need help!

I don't know what you were told. I can only speak for what I was told. My NUT currently recommends Oikos Triple Zero in the black container. It's nonfat, no sugar, no artificial sweeteners or something like that. And it's pretty good. I also do the Dannon Fit and Light (or Light and Fit) nonfat Greek yogurt. I was definitely told nonfat greek yogurt. Sometimes I get the plain and add my own fruit but I'm 2 years out. I couldn't have added fruit at the beginning. AT the beginning I added sugar free jello to give it some flavor. But I see someone said they add Crystal Light--wish I had thought of that! It's cool to get creative!

    Yogurt....I need help!

I eat the Fage Greek yogurt 0% total, by itself it doesn't taste that good, but I add crystal light fruit punch and I love it. Some other people told me to add torani sugar free syrup or jello of course sugar free. This yogurt is high in protein and low carbs
  13. On my meal plan I am allowed light Greek yogurt. Is that the same as low fat? I see many non-fat Greek yogurts but can't find light or low fat. They also want it sweetened with artificial sweeteners. I'm so confused-.....please help.

    Sick of being sick

Remember thin Protein drinks...sip sip sip. My program. Let me count Protein Drinks toward my hydration goal in the early days. If you can manage two thin servings of syntax nectar for example, you will have about 1/4th of your daily hydration and more like 2/3 of your protein. In my opinion, beef stew is too bulky for the amount of protein you get given how restricted you are. Avoid the things that feel the heaviest, I don't know what works best for you but things like Greek yogurt seemed to be easy on me. For me personally, the most difficult time was when I was transitioning to solid food. In my case it was about 6 weeks post op...everything felt like lead and I was a bit naseous all the time. I didn't vomit, but felt icky. Vitamins felt awful, like they were a full meal themselves. Chew alot, eat slow, small meals every 2-3 hours and use thin Protein Drink to get you to your protein and hydration goals. This phase will pass and you will feel better.

Tips on Kicking Sugar to the Curb?

I was given a carb ceiling, and it didn't matter whether they came from fruit, I still had to stay under my ceiling. I wasn't allowed any grains, refined sugary treats, or high carb vegetables (potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc.) no matter whether I could have shoehorned them into my daily carb/sugar allowance or not. I could have eaten fruit like bananas, but they are so high carb that if I had chosen to do that, there is no way I could have eaten things like yogurt or beans that are much better for you than bananas are. So, you might try counting how many grams of sugar you are getting overall, no matter where they come from, and see if they fit into your daily allotment. Good luck!

Torani Sugar Free Syrup comment & question

Nope she is one in a million, I lucked out!!Trust me the syrup makes a huge difference and I called my NUT this morning and she said therefore fine to add. LMK if you try it! I wish I did as well, hazelnut sounds yummy as well. I am trying the Salted Caramel today! Pre-O I Loved all the syntax shakes, post-op I have not be able to get down any of the five types I had in the house. It was so disappointing to me since they were my staple before surgery. Trying it today, Cant wait!! Thanks for the suggestion about trying it yogurt since I loved yogurt pre-op and the texture of it now makes me not want to eat it! Peppermint and Almond sound great! Ok so I obviously need to get Peppermint & Almond since those are my favorite flavors in general. Thanks for the reply. S'mores flavor sounds interesting, this is getting out of control I want to try them all now, LOL! Please post in this thread and let us know how you like them, good decision! I have not seen that one anywhere yet but once again another one of my favorite flavors. If you find it, let us know how it tastes! It's on their website. I have found some of the syrups at Home Goods and TJ Maxx.

    Protein shakes burn out!

My surgery was also in November and I switched to protein bars instead of shakes for the same reason. The Quest bars have worked well for me. As others have said, Greek yogurt is also a really good way to easily get protein. I have found that there can be a lot of variation in sugar content with Greek yogurt, so I have to pay attention to the label. Most days involve a Quest bar, a couple of servings of Greek yogurt, and grilled chicken breast for lunch and dinner. I now have no problem hitting around 100 g of protein and still sticking with a reasonable caloric intake.

Lap band won't allow all of the fill

Thanks for the reply! I go in this next week for another fill, so I think I will talk with the doc about what you have discussed in your reply. My meals generally are yogurt and scrambled eggs for breakfast, a weight watchers frozen meal for lunch, and dinner popcorn chicken and some fries. I do not snack throughout the day and I generally get in 100 oz of water a day.

    HELLO JANUARY SLEEVERS!

@@juan110 I feel good. Still have moments of tiredness, like after my first shower last night. All I really feel is a tugging at the incision sites if I bend over, or turn a certain way. Still have not tried sleeping in bed tho. Bought an EZ Lift recliner for sleeping and sitting in so I don't have to strain tummy muscles yet getting up and standing. It has been a godsend! I'm going to try the full liquid diet again beginning today. I don't like taking meds that are in capsules! It feels weird going down. Dr said to open them and mix with a tad bit of sugar free applesauce or yogurt. How are you feeling?

    Is there any hope?

Thank you for trying to understand. If I understood his suicide and my reaction to it, I wouldn't have needed the 4 1/2yrs of therapy. Thank you again. This week, well since Jan 12th, I've lost 11 pounds. I've gone back to a Protein shake for Breakfast, greed yogurt for lunch and an "allowable" dinner with a green salad topped with nutritional yeast. I am having trouble drinking enough. I've never been a big Fluid consumer, but I'm working at it. I am going three times a week for aqua therapy for my back since spinal fusion. After that I will join the pool. Thank you again, for asking about my progress. It means a great deal to me.
  22. It's been 2 weeks since I got the surgery and I don't feel like I got it? I don't get full with water and my diet consists of that and yogurt and I don't even drink the yogurt because I'm not a fan. So I can drink water all day and it's like I never even got surgery. I'm scared that the surgery failed. Like if for some reason they didn't do it right and I still have a large stomach.
  23. I'm 2 years out and I have always used Torani and Davinci syrups to flavor my shakes, plain Greek yogurt, coffee and hot chocolate. I have caramel, French vanilla, hazelnut, almond, Irish cream, English toffee, peppermint, pumpkin, gingerbread, raspberry and tiramisu in my cupboard right now.
  24. I guess I was never really told how much protein to have in a day. I always choice my high protein meal first. Turkey, chicken, Greek yogurt, cheese. Eggs. I feel great, lose weight like I should. I just nervous I don't want to be malnutrition. Lol. I do three meals. One snack. I have started doing protein bar as well.

    Protein shakes burn out!

I also recommend yogurt as a Protein source. Fage's plain yogurt has under 10 grams of carbs, and more than 20 grams of protein. The actual amounts vary a little depending on whether you're having the fat-free, low-fat, or regular yogurt. Fairlife milk is also high in protein. I get the 2% smaller single serving bottles to bring with me to work sometimes. They have 19 grams of protein. Some kefir is higher in protein, but you have to check the label because some have a lot of sugar. I use all three as bases for smoothies. Raspberries are my favorite because they are lower in carbs. I've seen recipes for healthier egg custards on Pinterest, but haven't actually made one. I've been planning to, and one of these days I actually will. You can find a lot of recipes on Pinterest for post-VSG eating.
