    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

My liquid diet is 3 shakes a day (they suggested the Fairlife shakes I got mine at BJ’s) they should have low carbs and sugar with some fiber. Premier is another popular one or Atkins. We can have three drinks a day of either - one egg, sugar free pudding or jello (1/2 cup), one light greek yogurt or 1/2 cup plain ricotta or cottage cheese. We can have unlimited sugar and caffeine free beverages, ice pops and plain broth
  2. i have been craving chicken nuggets for weeks. im currently almost 4 weeks from my surgery date and right now i can have a lot of different things but still no meat. I know this is technically cheating but would I be able to have a vegan chicken nugget (cooked in air fryer)? Im allowed toast (so technically bread crumbs) and I can have cooked veggies.... so basically I would be able to right? I am also allowed sauces. Its almost my "time" of the month so my cravings are STRONG

anyone have any suggestions for the liquid diet, I start mine in a week and I am nervous because I don't know what all to drink/have on this diet. Doctor's office wasn't very specific besides: liquids only. Any help or recommendations is appreciated!
  4. Hi everyone, I am 20 days from surgery (4/18) and I am nervous and excited. I feel prepared but at the same time I feel like I don't know what I am doing. My hospital hasn't been the easiest to work with as far as providing information on what to expect so I have been doing a lot of my own research. It almost feels like my doctors put everyone in the same camp and don't take each person as an individual which is highly annoying for a "Type A"/Planner like myself. I start a full pre-op liquid diet on 4/4 to help shrink my liver and jump-start weight loss before surgery. I am fully stocked up on Fairlife protein shakes (every flavor except coffee) and have unflavored protein powder and collagen to add to soups. What other options should I explore or do you have any recommendations for protein shakes to try? I am fairly nervous about my hair thinning or losing my hair - does anyone have experience with this or prevented this from happening? I started taking collagen about 3 months ago and noticed it has helped strengthen my nails and added hair growth but I am worried this won't be enough in the long run. Any advice is appreciated! Does anyone have any advice on pregnancy after DS? I am mainly going through this process to increase my chances of having children - my husband and I have suffered two miscarriages and I am being told by my OB/GYN that there's nothing they will do for me until I am at a better weight. I am fully committed as I want to start a family but waiting an additional 12-18 months after waiting this long seems like a lifetime. I want to be as prepared as possible for any hurdles or issues we may encounter - thanks in advance! That's a little about me - tell me about you! I am excited to be part of this community and build each other up! Thanks so much for reading, K. Becker - Minneapolis, MN

What do you guys think of this video?

Yup. Throw that food into MyFitnessPal. Keep calories not too low, not too high. Get your protein, and then get a lil' more. Walk 3-5x week. Work on your mind. That's it. The rest is icing on the cake.

    300+

it's going to vary pretty widely because it depends on so many factors besides starting BMI (although that's a big one, of course). Gender, age, metabolic rate, activity rate, what percentage of your body is muscle - those all play a role. that said, I lost 57 lbs before I had surgery (between my six-month supervised diet that was required by my insurance company, plus the two-week liquid diet required by the surgeon). At one year out, I was 129 lbs down from my surgery weight, and 186 lbs down from my all-time highest weight. I went on to lose another 50 or so lbs during year 2 (have gained 20 of it back since then, which is pretty common. A lot of us experience a 10-20 lb rebound gain after hitting our lowest weight). P.S. Just noticed this was posted in the gastric sleeve forum - I had bypass. Average loss tends to be a little more with bypass (although not by much), but it totally depends on the person. If you really stick to your program, you can be very successful with either.

    Any August 2021 Bypassers?

First things first: AMAZING JOB ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS! You can and will keep it up! Next: Get out your tools. Grab MyFitnessPro and start scanning everything you out in your mouth. Drink your 64oz water or more every day. Start weighing daily on a Bluetooth scale and watch how water weight and activity impact your weight, then when you have a good day, you'll be able to see what you did and repeat the cycle. I can understand slowing and stalling at 8 months, especially if your activity has stopped, but you don't want to be overeating and gaining, it's obvious you know that. Don't let those bad feelings make you eat. It's your choice. Think of your kids when you get those feelings and find something protein packed to eat on! You got this!!!!
  9. Ugh. The dreaded Pureed Stage. When i got to that stage, i puréed some beef, took one look at it and was all, No Thanks. Eww. So i just continued another week at Full Fluids then went to Minced right after. I did eat really, reaaaally runny eggs and creamy cottage cheese though.

Eating carbs (pasta, rice, or bread )

10 weeks post-op, and daily nausea, so I try to eat right, but it ultimately comes down to whatever will go down and stay down. I will get protein first, if I can, but the first month, my go to was mashed potatoes. The instant kind. I was afraid of, and still am, of anything with "sharp edges" Crackers. Salad. I don't know, it's weird.

    Weight regain advise please

a 5-6 lb gain in two weeks is almost too much to be due to a decrease in exercise or increase in food - so I suspect at last some of that is either water or full intestines. If so, at least a couple of lbs of that should drop off within a couple of days. As for the rest - if you're no longer logging your food intake, I'd start with that to see what and how much you're taking in. I find that if I take in more than 1700 calories for more than a day or two, my weight starts heading up (and that number is going to be different for everyone depending on age, gender, activity level, etc...). I'm OK with calorie counting, but some people hate doing that. If you're one who doesn't like it, then I'd go back to eating like you were a few months after surgery (as in NOT all the way back to protein shakes and an obscenely low number of calories - but the whole spiel of eating protein first, then nonstarchy vegetables. And then, if you're still hungry, maybe a small serving of fruit or whole-grain carb). losing weight can be a huge struggle once you're a few years out, but people do it...

Congrats! I just finished my zoom class with the others who are getting surgery from my surgeon within the next few weeks and it was very helpful. She said that those who take diabetes meds will never take them again once they leave the hospital so congrats on that also! I’m at 40 bmi with no co-morbidities per se but I want to get ahead of it. I have low energy, joint pain and get out of breathe easily. Not how I want to feel at 45 years old so I’m excited for this tool!

Eating carbs (pasta, rice, or bread )

Three years post-sleeve here and my body still doesn't like tortillas and I can only have a forkful or a single spoonful or potatoes, rice, or carbs.
  14. I'm sitting here this morning reminiscing and I can remember three times in my life when men, two of them my boyfriends at the time and the third one my boss, told me I was "big" and needed to lose weight. At that time I weighed about 160 which I would kill (not literally) to weigh now. I wasn't fat then. I was just on the bigger side but nice and curvy. As I am sitting here drinking my coffee, I am realizing that I've NEVER told anyone they were fat or suggested that they need to lose weight. It's not my job. They have mirrors. They know if they're big. It's their business. So I wonder why some people think it's okay to tell other people about their weight. And I really would have thought it would have been women to point out being fat, but in my case it was men. It made me come to this thread to ask you if anyone's ever told you you're fat or suggested you lose weight? Oh wait, I just remembered another one, again a man, a co-worker who told me "You know you're getting kind of big, right? You need to lose some weight." So how many times have you been told you're fat?
  15. Woke up one morning & decided enough & rang my GP for an appointment & referral. Had my surgery about 6 weeks later. Had been bouncing between 60 & 75kg all my adult like. Then menopause & I was 91 almost overnight. Tried to lose it for 3 years but couldn’t lose a pound. A friend had the surgery about 12 months earlier & was very happy so … I didn’t have any health issues except from aching feet from the rapid gain & then just some burning feet after (no more heels for me) but I knew it was in my future. You will have to make permanent changes to your eating habits if you want to have permanent success. But that is the same whatever means you use to lose weight - diet, medication, exercise. They are just tools like the surgery. The horror stories aren’t that common really. People write about them because they are seeking support & advice because they are uncommon. But all surgery has risks as do medications. Consider other weight loss drugs that were approved & then taken off the market because of adverse side effects that were discovered over time. If you’re worried, have a long honest chat with your surgeon about risks & the stats behind them. If you are relatively healthy now you are in a better place to have the surgery now than later when you may be experiencing some health issues. All the best whichever path you choose.
  16. I was not able to drink quickly at all for months. Although I was not considered dehydrated, it took me all day to drink 4 cups of liquid for weeks. Now, I can drink one cup in a minute. If I am going to be in the heat, I make sure to hydrate well in the hours beforehand. Hope this helps!
  17. I’m on my purée phase for 3 more weeks and I have to admit I’m still mostly drinking the shakes. I didn’t like the ricotta bake after the first day and I got sick of it. Don’t want to make it again. I’m eating applesauce and about 3 bites of baked chicken when I make it chewed really well. I did have Kroger’s kickin crab salad the other day, that was good. I’m afraid to wander too far off - and I’ve been in a stall that finally moved this morning. Baked salmon was really good.  I’m liking Soups but the carbs and sodium are high so only like once every few days. Sweet and spicy tuna packet is another perfectly portioned grab. I have the Unjury premixed Protein, love it. My dietician said we don’t have to blend the meats, just chew really well and eat slow.

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Tomorrow starts my 1000 high protein diet. I ate some favs this weekend and probably overdid it, but only for dinner. Stayed on track otherwise. Meals are all organized from now until I get home and through first couple of weeks. Sleeve surgery is April 6 th. Anyone else getting organized? Helps me mentally prepare too! Sent from my Lenovo YT-X705F using BariatricPal mobile app
  19. I'm 18 months out and I still rarely eat refined carbs. I mainly eat vegetables, lean protein (poultry, fish, pork, egg whites), and legumes. I don't eat a lot of processed low-carb substitute foods because they tend to be overpriced and often high in fat and calories, but I do have a few go-to substitutions: Cauliflower rice - I eat this several times per week and don't miss real rice at all. I buy the frozen stuff, so it's even faster and easier to prepare than real rice. Mr. Tortilla 1-net-carb tortillas (these are small and great for tacos). La Banderita carb counter tortillas (larger and great for wraps, and I cannot tell the difference from real flour tortillas). Mashed cauliflower - good substitute for mashed potatoes (with a lot of garlic and herbs, and low fat gravy).
  20. Good evening everyone, It has been three months since my sleeve surgery and things have been going very well. I had a question for everyone in regards to diet: did you ever re-incorporate carbs back into your diet? If so, how long after surgery? If not, what substitutes do you use? In the past three months I have not had any bread, rice, tortillas, or anything starchy...not even a cracker. And I will say, that is the one food change that makes me feel awkward or like I am missing out on deliciousness.
  21. Hello fellow DSers I have recently gained a few lbs and I’m freaking out. About 10 since fall with about 5-6 in the past 2 weeks (due to a bed rest situation/no exercise situation from a non related medical procedure I think). I am normally very active. I also do intermittent fasting. I work out about 2 hours a day 7 days a week with few exceptions. But to be honest I’m a terrible eater. I’m a sugar and carb addict and live my life a slave to my upset stomach (ds related) Again to be honest that has worked for me 2 years out I’ve lost 100% of my excess weight but it’s not working anymore. I went from 283 to 138 and am now about 148. How have you all handled these weight gains if you have had them? I’m afraid of the slippery slope. Should I go back to basics? Proteins and veggies? This is such a weird statement but I feel like the sugar is what has helped me get here bc I don’t keep the calories in (ya know) and I’m afraid to give it up. Any advise appreciated. TIA

Depressed, Sad and Stalled....Need Help Please

With life two things are certain Death and Taxes. With post WLS two things are certain Constipation and Stalls. It happens to us all. Stay the course and although frustrated take it from those of us who went through it, this too shall pass. Good luck and good health.

    3 years post op

I fast between 7PM to 7AM daily and do a 36 hour fast mid week. I stop eating at 7PM on Wednesday and resume eating at 7AM on Friday. During this time I only drink water or tea. I have watched Dr. Fung on You Tube and incorporate his ideas into my overall maintenance plan. It's one more tool in the weight maintenance tool kit.
  24. a 10-20 lb rebound after you hit your lowest weight is VERY common. I think it's just your body settling in where it feels comfortable - your new "set point". Of course, you can always lose it again if you decrease your calorie intake, but if this is your body's new "set point", it'll be a challenge to get back down to where you want to be and stay there. Been through this myself. I gained 20 lbs after hitting bottom. The first 10 pounds I was OK with because I'd gotten a bit too gaunt-looking, but I'd love to get rid of the last 10 lbs. Unfortunately, I've been struggling this for the last three or four years. I'm almost to the point of throwing in the towel. My current weight is fine, according to my surgeon and PCP, but I don't know - I looked pretty darn good 10 lbs ago!!
  25. First of all, don't lose sight of the fact that you have done great so far. You lost 95 pounds! That's fantastic. Since you said that you've stalled and are not losing, I'm assuming that means you haven't started regaining any of the weight, right? If that's the case, then you're in maintenance, so if you want to start losing again, you just have to lower your food intake and/or increase your exercise. Diet has a much bigger effect on weight loss than exercise, but exercise has a lot of other benefits, so it's a good idea to get back into exercise as well, even if it's just a little. Leslie Sansone's Walk at Home videos on YouTube are great, and you can start with short ones (there are several that are 15 minutes or less) if you don't want to or don't have time to do a longer walk or workout. Are you tracking everything you eat? If not, I think that's a great first step to kick-starting a change. Apps like MyFitnessPal or Baritastic make it easy, and tracking can help you identify the easiest changes to make. What are the healthiest foods that you already like to eat? Start eating those things more often, and cut out (or reduce) the stuff that's not worth the calories. If you like to cook, go on Pinterest to find some new recipes that are both tasty and healthy. Finally, I recommend not fixating on a specific number on the scale. Everyone is different, and you may not be able to get to 150, but that doesn't mean you failed. I bet you have already had some great non-scale victories with a 95-pound weight loss. Has your health improved? Are you more able to keep up with your kids? Can you wear clothes from non-plus size stores? Are you less self-conscious in social/professional situations? These things are all more meaningful than a number on the scale.
