  1. Hi everyone Just thought I'd share my VSG story with you all. Though my story is not as positive as most other posts are, I will say right now that I don't want anyone to use this as a reason to not get the surgery done. If anything, use my story to better your story. I've STRUGGLED with my weight all. my. life. On top of that dealing with asthma, allergies, PCOS, Metabolic Syndrome, fluctuating thyroid levels, diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (which took them a shocking while to determine whether I was type 1 or 2) by the age of 14. I've been seeing doctors regarding weight issues and trying to avoid it since I was around 7/8 years old. So literally this has all been my life, trying to avoid it and working so hard at the tender ages. By the age of 18, I absolutely could not take it any longer. I was tired in every way and form. Discouraged was an understatement at that point, I literally gave it my ALL and NOTHING worked. I dealt with more than you could possibly imagine in 18 years than some do in a lifetime. Cutting to the chase a bit - a close friend of my parents was also dealing with weight issues and so was her daughter. They both had the lap band done and they looked PHENOMENAL.Then more individuals related to them had the surgery with the same amazing results. As extremely happy as I was for them knowing the struggle, it also made me so jealous wishing something great like that could happen for me. She then helped me out and talked to my mom about it and then had her surgeon meet with my mom and I to talk to us. After meeting with a LARGE sum of doctors within my 18 years, this was the first time I met with a doctor and I didn't feel like everything was my fault, like I just have to keep trying and just hope for the best, like I didn't care about myself and was probably just a lazy kid. First time I felt like a doctor truly felt my struggle. The doctors main concern was living with the diabetes, they wanted that to be resolved more than anything - and so did I, because living with diabetes was a nightmare for me (that's a whole other story by itself). We later came to the conclusion that the Gastric Sleeve surgery was the best option for me and I totally agreed. My excitement was out of this world! I met with the doctor in May, had my surgery on July, 12, 2013. So, now looking back, you can say it was a fairly rushed process. But I guess at the time I didn't see it as that because I just wanted to have the surgery done! Had the blood work done that the doctor needed, did the pre op diet (which I barely lost much weight with), had my surgery done. Supposedly everything went well during it. Had A LOT of stomach aches and pains but everything was fine, did experience hunger pains which was strange. Cutting the to the point again, by the 2nd or 3rd day post op, my sugars were normal! I could neverrrr describe that unreal feeling! By the fifth day I believe I had dropped 10 lbs!! By a week 15 lbs - but, that was it.... Yes, you read that correctly. This coming July will mark 3 years post op, and I am still fluctuating around that. 3 years... I've been told about plateaus but it is clearly something much more than that. Almost 3 years and I am now a diabetic, again.. Nothing seems to help me lose weight, and the weird feeling now is that I feel hungry almost all the time. To be honest, I was and am not one of the sleevers who tried to force themselves to eat more than they could or got sad that they couldn't eat as much as before - those things made me soo happy. But that feeling of satiety was something I rarely ever experienced throughout these 2 almost 3 years. For sure I would take 2/3 bites and feel full but that only lasted half an hour to an hour. I can't ever remember eating what is a normal amount to a sleever and having the full feeling remain for a few hours until another meal time, and I was dying the experience that feeling and I still am. I went into the surgery as everyone should know "this is not going to work by it is just a tool to help you", and yes I did understand that and yes as I'm sure every person would had/ will have a WLS feels deep down somewhere is that euphoria feeling of this will be your fix. Could there have been times where I could've/should've put more work in - for sure as I'm sure that's the same with everyone. I was tired and done by the age of 18, almost 21 now I don't even know what to call the state I'm in. If ANYONE has any type or form of advice, or experiences like this, please do share it with me if you are comfortable to do so. I've been doing a lot of new research recently and came across some people with the same issue and it appears as though not enough of the stomach was removed which results in losing some weight at first then no more at all afterwards. This then lead to a Revision Sleeve surgery (basically re-sleeving the sleeve)...is anyone familiar with this/has anyone experienced this? Super proud of everyone who is losing weight and have successful stories, keep going you got this! To anyone who has lost a fair amount of weight but is maybe feeling annoyed or anger because their weight loss has slowed down or anything that that, remind yourself that you've still lost and at least you are not in my boat Be grateful! Best regards <3 P.S. sorry that this is kinda of scattered and trust me when I say this story in MUCH more in depth in many areas, but I shall leave it at this, for now.

    Thigh Lift: Worth It?

I completely regret the thigh lift on the right side because I have had terrible complications. Left side, was a breeze. My primary care doc told me a year from now it will be a distant memory and you will be so happy you did this. My reply was unless I wind up with legs like Taylor Swift...so NOT worth it. Ha. But, that's just because I had a complication and am still in hell. Ask me in about a month and I can give you the whole story because I have fairly unique thigh issues - firm and muscular all the way around except for a terrible pocket of cellulite and skin in the upper inner thigh. When I had my LBL, did the groin incision small thigh lift and it improved it so much, but in 2 years the problem had returned Turns out thigh fat cells are really mean and grow new ones even though I have maintained my weight! Anyway, that is the sad story of how I wound up getting just a little thigh work done while my breast revision was underway. I'll let you know how it turns out in the end. Left one looks good!

    Thigh Lift: Worth It?

I made the decision for me it wasn't worth it... But as for the running/training it's at least 6 weeks post op before you can run again, often 8 depending on your surgeon. I would wait till after the half marathon!!! In fact I scheduled all my plastics around my running schedule. Had them 10 days after my first marathon so I could take time to recover from both! I still haven't had a small scar (dog ear) revision done because I haven't found a break long enough in my running schedule!

    Regain

I had a RNY in 2002 & I lost 132 pounds and now I've also regained about 70. I went to a different surgeon as my original has since retired. He gave me a barium swallow right in his office and it was determined that my pouch was fine but the opening at the bottom of my stomach wasn't small anymore. He did a revision surgery on me yesterday cinching that opening back down to 1 cm. not sure if any of that helps you but I thought I would share so you'd know you aren't alone.

    Fat Doctor

It really is sad. Because plastics can be AMAZING and have amazing long term results. The doctors on that show are just TERRIBLE. If I see one more tummy tuck without a muscle repair, I think I'm just going to have to give up on the show altogether. I feel bad for the patients. I know they are getting extensive plastic surgery for free, but the revisions they will need down the line make it so not worth it. They'd be better off saving up for a couple of years, going to a decent surgeon, and saving themselves additional surgeries in the future.
  9. Anyone else go through this procedure where the surgeon cinched the stoma back down to 1cm?

    Acid reflux

My story is long . I got banded in 08 in 13 my band slipped . I lost a total of 93 lbs. once I got my band revised I gain about 40 lbs. until I got the right fill and I started losing again . Lost about 35 of the 40 that I gained , and all of the sudden my band stopped working. I kept going back getting fills and nothing . One day I was on a lap band blog and this gentleman said maybe your band has slipped.. I went to see my gastric Doctor he put me under the X-ray looked at my band and believe it or not the band was filled up tight . So he never believe it was leaking. I came back twice since then and still I have no restrictions what so ever. Today when I went to see him , he said I'm going to pull out the fluid that is inside to see just how much is in there , when he did he pulled out about 3 cc and he said I should've had about 8 cc in there. So now we know for sure it's leaking . So now my next step is to either replaced the tub if it's leaking from there or the band itself . Or just take it out and get the sleeve. Has anyone have problems like this . Is anyone trying to consider from changing from the band to the sleeve . If so please I would like your in out on this matter.
  11. Hi, I'm having surgery on 4th March on the Gold Coast, although I live in Brisbane. Feeling scared and excited. I can't wait to start my new life and break free from my fat shell. My RYN is revision surgery after a lapband worked for me until after I had a Bub. Then we could never find the sweet spot again...the band had actually slipped and caused a few issues so I won't be doing that again. Who's your surgeon?
  12. I just spoke to my insurance company and the lady agreed with me it's either OR, not both. But she said she wanted to look into further and she was going to get back to me on it. She thinks the person my coordinator spoke to read the wrong one. Because there is different sections for different patients. People under 18, over 18 and revisions. So, I don't know what to do now. My coordinator cancelled my Nut. Appointment. So if it comes back I was right the whole time I'll be a month behind. And won't see a surgery until August or September. :/
  13. How much below your highest weight do you want to be before surgery and why? I have lost 30 lbs from my highest weight, and I want to lose another 15 more before surgery. Besides health reasons, I'm not really sure why. I guess I think I'll be more successful if I start at the lowest weight possible on the morning of surgery. I have a LOT of weight to lose, even more so since I am a shorty. I'm on a liquid diet (FOREVER, it seems like) and I'm a revision patient, so I really want to lose more weight before my surgery date on March 10. It is taking forever to get here and I'm tired of liquids already and it's only been two weeks!

    Band removal and hernia repair

I had lap band revision (reposition of the band) with hernia repair, and the recovery was a little tougher than the original lap band surgery because of the scar tissue on my stomach. Basically weaker than last time, but felt better both times by day 8. good luck!
  15. nicksmommy

    And so it begins...

very excited for you!! ???? I can't wait for my revision, won't be til August. Good luck and congratulations!!
  16. My band to sleeve revision surgery is scheduled for 2/26/16! My 2 week pre-op liquid diet starts on 2/12...That's THIS WEEK! Holy cow! I'm preparing. I have some of the Meal Replacement Soups and shakes and I'm building up to it. I'll be ready come Friday to do those 5 shakes/soups per day for the next 2 weeks. Oh, it will be HARD. Yes, it will. But I can do it! I'm ready for this.I'm so ready.
  17. So glad you are feeling better! I was a band to sleeve revision with hernia repair and the first week was pretty rough. It does get better!

anyone feel like they need restapling

I have heard that there is some sort of "revision" but I don't know what that is and would use that as a last resort. As others were saying, are you still following the plan? Are you still exercising and following all the basic rules? Getting enough Water in? Not drinking with your meals, etc.? Are you keeping a food journal? This is key!!!! It's magic! And then, the next thing is to try the 5 day pouch test. This is supposed to help you "reset." Try all these things before you think about surgery again, especially if it is just a possibility that you gained a few pounds.

    My Texas Sleevers

I'm from Sherman, Tx and just had my revision surgery from band to sleeve on 2/4/2016.

I have a secret and need advice - for the ladies

Get the lumps out, take the reduction now. If you have issues later, cross that bridge when you get to it. You can always have a revision and/or implants.
  21. This thread post gives me hope. I had an upper gi done and was told my sleeve is stretched. I have an appointment this week to discuss a revision. My new doctor wants to do bypass and my insurance covers revision. I'm only worried about whether or not they will pay for mine because my bmi is 31. I'm hoping they say it's medically necessary and cover it.
  22. Well since my visit to my new Surgeon on Last Monday I'm just waiting on insurance approval to have a revision to the gastric bypass and hopefully all of my issues will finally be over...... Bye bye GERDS

  23. Hello all - I'm new to the site and have been reading through the forums... Has anyone that's had an open RNY surgery had to have a revision years later? I had my original surgery March 2002, started at 268 pounds, lost 132 pounds and slowly have regained 70ish pounds. I've lost and gained the last 15 pounds several times. I can eat mashed potatoes today and be fine and in two days warm up the leftovers and dump like crazy so my digestion is totally unpredictable. I did a barium swallow and the Dr determined my stoma reduction didn't hold from the original surgery so he's going in endoscopic to cinch the stoma that's about an inch wide now down to 1cm. He mentioned possibly cinching my pouch down too depending on how things look during the procedure. My revision is tomorrow morning and I'm just wondering if anyone else gone through this and what the results were - both from a not getting sick so much and weight loss stance. Thanks in advance, ~K
  24. And this is why people saying "but Marilyn Monroe wore a size 12-14!" is so dumb... yes, she did, but that is in 1950s sizing, not 2010s. Ugh, drives me nuts. She had like a 23" waist. ANYWAY... I don't consider myself a veteran yet, but I'm below goal. I started out pre-op as a size 20W, and I'm now wearing a size 2 or 4. I never, ever, ever thought I'd fit into a size 2! And yes, vanity sizing is a very real phenomenon. When I was about this weight in high school (about 1995?), I don't think I was ever in smaller than a 7/8 in pants. (Oh, and BTW, I am currently wearing a modern size 2 pants but I'm a size 18 in 1940s clothing/patterns. Ha!) I would have been thrilled to fit into an 8 or 10, but my body decided otherwise, at least for now. I initially set my goal weight at 145, which was still "overweight" for my height (5'2"), but it was the lowest I could fathom weighing, and a weight at which I remembered feeling OK. Once I had surgery and started dropping weight, I realized that I could revise my goal downward, so I set it at 135, which is the highest weight of the "normal" range for my height. I hit that in December and have lost another 15+ pounds. It's mind-boggling!
