    Eating Habits

I eat lemon pepper bumblebee tuna for breakfast usually.. this morning I had yogurt with blueberries though and a small cup of coffee.. that was my first time to try that.. at lunch I had chicken pho with bean sprouts instead of noodles.. about an hour ago I had a small snack of energy trailmix.. for dinner I'll probably have chicken and veggies or maybe even pho again.. I'm so addicted to it.... I can pretty much eat anything anybody else does except scrambled eggs, omelets, thick bread products and sometimes chicken prepared a certain way.. other than that, everything goes down pretty well..
  2. I'm also scheduled for surgery on the 2nd. I started my pre-op diet yesterday. On mine I can have 2 soup meals daily (healthy choice etc) sugar free-fat free pudding or yogurt (only 2x a day) and the protein shakes. I tried the Muscle Milk lite, but what an aftertaste!!! Today I used the Wonder Slim which is like the Medifast and its so much better.. so far I'm not craving meat, but it's so hot here in NY that I could go for some ice cream!!!

    Thanksgiving!!

A traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Just use smaller portions. One bigger meal is not going to hurt you. A day or two before go to Protein shakes to go in lighter. Turkey, steamed veggies, mashe potatoes, smaller portion of gravy. Have some yogurt, fruit and a relish tray, with some low fat cheeses on your table. Best wishes

    Weight gain during 6months...

betterme38 I lost a decent amount of weight before my surgery. This is what I did. 1) I started eating like a bariatric patient - protein/veg - cut carbs drastically. I also drank no Water 1/2 before or after meals. I found that I was less hungry doing this. 2) I drank a ton of water at other times. I have a 32 oz bottle that I filled twice and made sure I drank throughout the day. 3) I replaced one meal (breakfast) with a Protein shake. I found one I liked and stuck with it. On weekends I would have scrambled eggs instead of Protein shakes. 4) Healthy Snacks - yogurt, string cheese, etc. 5) I hit a plateau and was stuck at a certain weight for a few weeks...the only thing that helped me get through it was upping the intensity of my exercise. You can do it! Oh and practice CHEWING each bite 20-30 times and put the fork down between bites. The other things I did - I bought smaller forks/spoons and plates. I still eat off them now. It works.

    Help with the MUSHIES

What a relief to see others are feeling the same way as me! I was banded on 02/23 and have had no real discomfort, just hunger for the last few days. I've been eating a lot of tomato soup and yogurt. I was feeling light headed and tired so I've added some Carnation Instant Breakfast to get some more protein. I now know why this period is called Bandster Hell. Just reading your posts has made me feel better though. Thanks! Erin

    I need some support

WHen you say you are eating more - what types of foods are you able to eat more of? I would say you are not necessarily too full unless you can't eat at least a cup of food a sitting and stay satisfied between meals. You shouldn't feel hungry at all --- now there is a definate difference between eating b/c you are bored/upset/happy and eating because you are hungry....I literally am very rarely ever truely hungry....I eat my three meals and am satisfied...sometimes I eat some cheese or a few nuts throughout the day to try and boost my Protein...as when you are getting a lot of protein (at least 50-60g, more if you can get it in) you will see better weight loss and lots more energy, too. I found when I was kinda faltering....eating more junk food and falling into old habits again, that it helped me to get a MAgic Bullet and some Protein shake mixes and extra Protein powder to add more...and be creative. I like the taste of the Herbalife mix (and can get it cheaply on ebay) - so my favorite is 2 scoops of the chocolate, a tbs of Peanut Butter or PB2 (powdered peanut butter), tbs sugar free choc pudding, 6 oz skim milk, extra protein powder, and about 4-6 oz ice. I first mix everything but the ice together - then add the ice and blend it all up - makes a nice thick shake....not frothy or anything...and the flavor reminds me of a Reece's PB Cup. LOL It's a great treat and I found if I add more protein to it (unflavored) I can get 30 grams in the shake and it sticks with me for a LONG time....PLUS I feel like I got a fabulous shake from dairy queen AND it is healthy! Win win win situation all the way around! I take the tropical fruit flavored mix from herbalife and mix it with some OJ, extra protein powder, a scoop of vanilla frozen yogurt, and some frozen fruit in the mornings...it is heavenly! Be creative - it keeps things insteresting! And there are TONS of fabulous sugar free pudding flavors to use - cheesecake is one of my faves with the choc shakes, too...just takes about a tbs to add the taste wonderfully. Hang in there - we were banded about the same time...my date is March 23,2009....PM me if you have questions or wanna chat! Kim
  8. Do some searches on here for favorite Protein shakes and do some taste tests! There are hundreds out there I'm sure you can find one you like. Took me a LONG time and I don't like most of the ones people on here rave about, but I just kept tying! Personally I like the Syntrax Matrix ones (mint cookie and Peanut Butter cookie are my favorite) and the BSN syntha 6 ones (Mochaccino, orange cream and vanilla milkshake). Keep trying! At your stage I was doing two most days and Greek yogurt to get my calorie and protein count up.
  9. Yes its hard getting use to eating slowly and I say this to you almost 2 months after my surgery. To be honest with you I stopped drinking Protein shakes after my surgery but then started again after my first fill. I would think that eggs should be good but try some blended Beans especially if you cook them yourself they will be better tasting. Try playing with your Protein Shakes to change up the nasty flavor...example 1/2 cup of yogurt (whichever) 1/2 cup of banana and strawberries (from the frozen section work fine and last longer) Splash of soy milk (vanilla flavor adds more) and 1/2 of serving of that terrible protein...and blend the crap out of it. The frozen fruit makes it taste like a smoothie, and you can add more milk to reduce the taste of the protein... refrigerate the left overs and have them the next day.

Does anyone ever eat frozen yogurt,? I don't like yogurt but today I tried frozen no sugar added non fattening yogurt today n it was pretty good.
  12. For breakfast I often have Greek yogurt so that's not a cup of food. For lunch and dinner I do usually have a cup of food. I have some restriction. I usually don't snack and generally am not hungry.
  13. I had my surgery on Friday April 1 Okay, so, my surgeon gave me a book for all the information that I need regarding before, during and after surgery. So I was just reading up on post op diet this morning and there is some conflicting information in here. One part says I can start the full liquid diet after I leave the hospital, another part says to start full liquids on day 5. I would love to start full liquids now as it would be much easier for me to get my Protein, liquid and calories. I'm having a hard time right now. Today I did get down two Sobe Lifewater Zero's. One had half a scoop of Protein powder. I also got in a high protein chicken bullion, but all that adds up to 55 oz fluids, 30 g protein and 135 calories. I am not at all hungry and getting this down is a chore. If I could just switch to my Premier Protien shakes and some yogurt I would be so happy. I'm just not sure.

    New food choices

I'm going to try yogurt tonight and see what happens. I also had a tbl. of hummus at lunchtime that went down well. I've got 3 calls into the nutritionist at my doctor's office, but she still hasn't got back to me. Thanks for the help!

    Fruit

I was told all of the above. Skins are tough to digest the first 2-4 weeks. Mine told me to keep them at bay because they are fructose sugar. While MUCH better and healthier than sources of refined and cane sugar, the whole point of this surgery is to give the liver and pancreas a nice long break and cut down on sugars OVERALL. They are a source of carbs, and if you follow the low-carb diet -- they can add up. Some docs focus on this, some don't. Plus, some patients don't have restraint and get a taste of sweet, decide a bite of candy won't hurt, then a donut, etc. Really it comes down to common sense and watching your intake in your food journal. I started out with blueberries and raspberries in my Greek yogurt, spitting out the skins the first month. And only eating 10 berries in a day. Google a list of fruit, you'll see bananas are one of the highest in sugar. But if you let them go past ripe to slightly brown, it reduces in sugar. I treat myself to about 1/2 a medium banana every week or two. Maybe a strawberry here and there. I'm sure when it's cherry season, I'll have a few. The key is small servings and moderation.
  16. You and I are close in weight and while I would like to drop to around 119 I have found that there are certain things that prevent me from losing, which aren't unhealthy. As an example, when I lift weight, I maintain or gain weight but lose in inches. I have largely avoided weight training because I know I am all about a certain number and if I had been lifting the entire time, I would never have gotten into the 130's forget the 120's. I look at a squat rack and I gain weight, so now that I am under my original goal weight and sort of close to my end goal weight, one way to not continue to lose weight and to increase my tone is through building muscle. In conjunction with building muscle, a nice side of being a little thinner is you can add Protein shakes that have more calories and more protein. This balances out the calories you are burning with exercise and adds calories to your diet that aren't bad for you. You can also up your protein a little more, which also adds calories and is healthy for you, because now you don't have to worry about eating so much that you won't lose. I know that if I want to continue to lose I absolutely must have some form of cardio workout and be under 1400 calories, or if I want to be lazy and skip exercise, I don't get more than 1000 calories. I have found that to maintain I can eat around 1500-1800 calories and around 60-80g of protein and as long as I'm working out I don't really gain, I just bounce around between 2-3 pounds. So shorter version of my answer to your question- add more protein, healthy fat, and weight based exercise. You'll build muscle, which will make you look more toned, but you won't be getting skinnier since you're counteracting everything with higher calories and higher protein. Adding a single Protein shake that has a decent amount of calories (I like the kind in my blender with Protein powder, almond milk, PB2, and frozen greek yogurt) should help you gain a few pounds healthily or maintain.

    Hair Loss ):

I also had hair loss and thinning. It usually happens 4-6 months post op. I started taking Biotin 5000mcg capsules from Target once a day. It seems to be helping. I try to get in my protein in daily as well by eating fish, greek yogurt with protein packed granola. Crystal

    Emotional Eating

I am totally a boredom eater, so I have been getting off my duff and moving more in order to not eat between meals. I find that I actually get hungry sometimes when I'm sitting around, but if I'm busy I don't have time to feel hungry or eat just because. I have a 2 and a 5 year old, so I use them as my lead. They are always active. So I do stuff with them and they love it! Meanwhile, I'm not eating. I struggle with mid afternoon and late night hunger/cravings. In the afternoon, I exercise. That motivates me not to eat because I want to see the benefits of my hard work. Late night, that's a tough time. I used to watch TV with my hubby everynight and pig out on something. Now, we still watch some TV, but I'm not eat and he is. OMG, tough! Lately, if I get hungry in the evening I eat a yogurt or I go to bed. I'm looking for good nighttime ideas too!
  20. I think @@Bob2013 does have a point about the volume problem. Vegan body builders and athletes tend to eat a lot and they don't usually do low carb since most vegan sources of Protein also have a significant amount of carbs (not that that's a bad thing for most people). I've worried about this myself, and like I said above, that's why I plan to be lacto-ovo until I get to maintenance (and source out the least ethically problematic sources of dairy and eggs I can during this time, though of course that's not easy since I don't run my own farm). Not eating meat definitely isn't a problem though. Fat-free Quark for example (which I don't think you can get easily in the US, but it's a curd cheese that's kind of like a mix of greek yogurt and ricotta) has almost 30g of protein per 100g serving and only something like 4g of carbohydrates. I put it in my salad dressing, Protein shakes, on top of soup or Beans instead of sour cream, and when I'm post op and can have fruit again, I'll mix it with berries, and maybe even freeze it for popsicles. You're supposed to get one gram of protein for every kilo you weigh, so @@Bob2013 that means you'd need about 75g of protein a day when you get to goal. Once you're done losing, you can probably up your calories to around 1200-1500, depending on how much you work out, and 75g of protein on a standard clean vegan diet shouldn't be a problem. Minimizing your consumption of animal products by going vegan is a wonderful goal, and if you can make it work, then I totally applaud you and I wish you luck! Hopefully I'll get back there at some point too.
  21. Cib w skim milk has about the same as a protein drink. My doc wants me to drink about 2 a day w yogurts, cream soups w skim milk, sf puddings. I guess I just have so many people knowing and watching to see how I do w this that I'm afraid to not lose. Plus in all honesty, I am not hungry. Thanks B52 that was encouraging.

    Dumping

Hello, I'm not sure what "dumping" is but after reading this forum and what everyone has described I am suffering from the aftermath of it right now. Last night I pureed some shredded chicken which I have been eating for the past few days, but last night I added some fat free sour cream just to change it up a bit. BIG MISTAKE!!!!! Not even 10 mins later I was balled up in fetal position sweating, then about 5 mins later I was in the bathroom with it (TMI) coming out of both ends. This morning I'm still sick and feel queasy, so today I will just have my Greek yogurt and add my unflavored Protein to it. I never want to eat sour cream EVER AGAIN!!! This is really an unpleasant feeling.
  24. Hi all! I have all my paperwork for what to drink/eat for my clear liquid & full liquid phases. What I don’t have is an idea on how much to drink/eat during full liquids. I know I can have thinned Greek yogurt, thinned applesauce, thinned & strained soups, etc. But, hypothetically, could I sip on soup or eat yogurt all day long as long as I got my protein in? (I wouldn’t actually do that) In the purée phase & beyond I’m told how many ounces of each category to have in a meal. I just need an idea on how much to consume during my full liquid phase. Any advice is much appreciated!
  25. Hey there everyone, I'm currently about 3 months post op VSG and I had my surgery on September 19th. My highest weight ever was 310 pounds about 3 years ago. I started my pre-op liquid Optifast diet at 285 pounds and was on it for 3 weeks, got down to 265 on the day of surgery, and I'm now 230 pounds 3 months out. So I've only lost 35 pounds since my actual surgery. I'm feeling quite discouraged because I feel this is a very slow loss for someone 3 months out. With regards to my eating habits, I weigh absolutely all of my food and am consistently getting between 60-80grams of Protein and anywhere from 600-850 calories a day. I can eat a little bit more than I could a few weeks ago, and I can get in about 3oz of lean protein in one sitting. However I can eat about 5-6oz of food spread out over a few hours. So sometimes I'll weigh out 4oz of meat and 1-2 oz of veggies with some cheese or hummus and eat that over 3-4hours to make sure I'm getting in enough protein in a day. I do this because I'm trying to get all my protein from food and not have to rely on Protein shakes or bars anymore. Occasionally I will have a Protein Bar occasionally and I usually add protein granola to my yogurt. Some things that I eat on a regular basis are greek yogurt, hummus, cheddar cheese, almonds, beef Jerky, chicken, beef, eggs occasionally, and vegetables like broccoli or brussel sprouts. When it comes to Water I'm getting in about 1 - 1.5 liters a day. Also, here is my fitnesspal where I've been logging everything I've been eating everyday for the past 2.5 months since I started pureed foods: scale Any support would be great, thank you!
