    Sweet Tooth

While I was losing, my sweets came from: vanilla Greek yogurt Calcium chocolate chewables (which I have after dinner in the evening) Now I'm on maintenance and have a bigger calorie budget than when I was still losing weight.
  2. Hey, our stats are almost identical! Let's keep in touch. In the patient portal, on the left side of the screen there is a button labeled Criteria. That's where they put all the requirements, individualized for you specifically. Each item gets checked off and dated. I've been on there every day to make sure things are moving along. I'm about to pester my GP again for medical records, today; it's the only thing left. I'm worried about the pre-op diet. I will often drink what I call a super shake: a fruit, a vegetable (spinach or Kale, usually), plain Greek yogurt, Water, and sometimes a healthy add-in. I asked if I could drink this instead of protein shakes; the nutritionist said that would be fine after the surgery, but not before. I've been getting into a more whole food diet lately, and I don't know how I'm going to choke down those fake Protein Shakes 3-4 times a day. Blech. Good luck to us both! I'm hoping for mid-March too. Keep me updated.
  3. Early on I ate things I liked before surgery that fit in the guidelines, like yogurt, cream of chicken soup, (chicken pureed), idahoan instant mashed potatoes (several flavors) mixed thin, various flavors of soup, and baby food. There really is a lot of variety. Foods have tasted good, so that has not been an issue. Be patient, it all does come in good time.
  4. Hello all! A little background on me: I'm 46 years old and was recently diagnosed as diabetic with severe obstructive sleep apnea. I also quit a 20 year smoking habit in June 2014. In April 2009 at my highest weight of 382 I had a lapband installed. That helped me lose 30-40 lbs that I have essentially kept off in the last 6 years. I've been on Weight Watchers since May 2014 but have gained and lost the same 15 lbs (fluctuate between 348-360 depending on the time of month.) I've been doing nutritionist visits since Oct and will have completed my 6 months pre-op period in March. The only problem is that I haven't lost any weight. Still doing the up-and-down thing. I'm currently scheduled for an outpatient surgery on Friday, February 12th to remove some fibroids from my uterus that are causing issues. I'm hoping that will help with retaining Water. But the surgeon will not perform my WLS conversion (I'm aiming for RNY) procedure until I lose the weight I need to. I know the 2-week pre-op liquid diet should help but I need to lose at least 25 before they'll probably consider scheduling (and then I'll need to lose that last 10 in the two weeks prior). I recently purchased a treadmill and I've been doing pretty good with getting in at least 15 minutes of walking every other day (sometimes more, sometimes less). I'm saying all of this because I need ideas on Meal Replacement products to help me drop this weight. I'm an adult picky eater which means I have a small range of foods from which I'll eat - still learning to like most fruits and veggies. I can't stand yogurt (have tried all kinds/flavors etc - always makes me gag) and really REALLY don't like tuna. I'm not too worried about the cost of Meal Replacements - I make a good salary and can afford to spend on this if it will help me lose the weight I need to get the surgery. Would welcome any advice on products that folks have used either for their 2-week pre-op diet or any medical weight loss program. Thank you in advance!!

    Help! Calories and carbs!

Post-op, you won't be able to eat fruits for some time. Or whole grains. Your carbs will be easier to control. The colored, green, red, yellow veggies are what you should introduce first. Some dairy products, even skim milk and yogurt, will be the greatest early source of your carbs. FYI, I wasn't big on the low-low-low carbs approach. Never was my thing ever. Also FYI (you should do your own thing, but you might like to know what others have done), my calories / Protein grams looked like this: Month 1 - 500 cals, 60 grams protein Months 2 - 4 - 800 cals, 80 grams protein Months 5-6 - 1,000 cals, 90 grams protein Months 7-8 - 1,200 cals, 100 grams protein Early maintenance - 1,500 cals, 100 grams protein Maintenance today - 1,700 - 1,800 cals, 80-90 grams protein My surgical physician's assistant (who stays up on the latest, greatest WLS research) encouraged me strongly to raise my 5-6 month cals to 1,000 and my 7-8 month cals to 1,200. She said if I continued to eat only 800 cals, it would stunt my future maintenance metabolic rate. I gotta say I am so happy I can eat 1,700 - 1,800 cals and maintain (now at 135 pounds). And I'm not a gym rat or a runner either. I do walk and move a lot more, do yoga, etc.

    Good and meal ideas

Let me just add some things I eat I am 3.5 months out and have been released to eat almost everything except salad and steak. Eggs, cream of wheat, Greek nonfat yogurt, all kinds of cheese, low sodium lunch meat, potato, avocado, humus, chicken, Pork roast, cooked fresh veggies, sugar free pudding, almond milk, inspire protein, quest protein bars, cauliflower rice, tofu. Almost anything my sleeve will tolerate. My favorite treat is 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, vanilla protein and a sugar free Crush orange packet blended with ice it tastes like an orange dream Popsicle!
  7. No one wanted me to do this. Not my wife. Not my friends. Not my Doctor. Not my other Doctor. "You are carrying your weight well". "You exercise". "You can lose the weight". I quit smoking in 1988 and have been gaining ever since. I have sleep Apnea, AFib, Blood Pressure. And I have been carrying my weight well, all 160 extra pounds. I never did name him. Before surgery, the scariest part of the week was getting fit for a CPAP machine. I was in denial. I didn't understand that shorting myself oxygen in my sleep was the primary cause of my Atrial Fibrillation. My surgeon says the sleep apnea will resolve as a result of the weight loss. The AFib may not go away. I did beat it once with exercise, but I might not get that break again. So I scheduled my surgery. It took over a year. Too much politics and insurance management. My work insurance covers nothing to do with obesity. In September I went on Medicare with a zero co-pay supplement. It has covered my AFib, both heart conversions. It covered my sleep tests and CPAP equipment. It covered my surgery. Surgery went well. I have had no pain. No nausea. I have lost 18 lbs in 24 days. My bullet holes are healed. I'm ready to eat food in a few days. So my my wife says I must have had the placebo surgery. I know the difference. I have not been physically hungry. I can watch the food channel and think "that looks good". I can see a huge burger on a bill board and think "that looks good". But I have not been hungry. I have every kind of measuring cup: 1 oz, 2 oz, 1/4 cup, 1/2 cup. I have my Nutribullet. I can make white bean chicken chili with refried Beans and cayenne pepper in a puree in 6 seconds, heat and eat. I can have a plate of Yogurt and cottage cheese and enjoy it. I have organic lemon juice and cider vinegar with my Water. I've stopped crushing my pills and if I want a real treat I have a sugar free pudding or half a kozyshack rice pudding. 60-70 gms of Protein and about 600-700 calories. Without the hunger I can do this. The worst experience I've endured is wearing my CPAP every night, and enduring my choice of liquid Vitamin. Total loss 42 lbs. On Sunday I'm back to work. Lets see how stress factors in, as if I don't know how I got here to begin with.....
  8. I had the same experience early on. Once I started eating a more balanced diet that taste went away, but my taste buds definitely did change. I can't tolerate super sweet stuff anymore, which is just fine with me! For me I think it had a lot to do with the change to very high Protein content and the fact that I was getting most of my protein from shakes and yogurt. Once I was able to tolerate animal protein and solid veggies things got a whole lot better. The breath thing could be from the very low carbohydrate count. It's called "ketone breath." I had a co-worker who used to do low-carb diets fairly regularly and I always knew it because of her breath! I started paying attention to my own breath and I definitely did notice a change. I felt bad for anyone I may have inadvertently offended. Mine goes away with the addition of just a few grams of carbs, though, which I get through my veggies, so I don't even think about it anymore.

    What have I done?

It gets better! I went through the same thing. In reality, there really isn't much you CANT have in the long run. I had a little bit of Pasta but made sure I ate the chicken first. I certainly won't make a habit out of it but it's nice to know that if I want a small portion I can have it and it's not the end of the world. I still get repulsed by some foods at 9 weeks out. Yogurt is absolutely disgusting and I can't get it down even though I try. Right after surgery Protein shakes in all forms made me gag. It's much more pleasant once you get moved to real food.

    What have I done?

I have the same feelings especially when I see a tv commercial but I find cooking the things I want since I cook for three other ppl at home and smelling it helps to not want it weird right lol I had my surgery the 28th of Jan and I just love it I can tell I've already lost some in.!! I'm going today to get all my stuff to make shakes ! And my yogurts n such and baby food (yuck) but I wish u so much luck !!
  11. I understand that feeling of wanting food, but not being able to eat it. Those first couple of weeks are super hard. Today marks 5 weeks for me and I am still figuring things out. Here are a couple of things that I tried that helped: Cream of chicken Soup - gives you some satisfaction for any salt craving Skim Milk Cottage cheese - oodles of Protein (10-12g per half cup) Okios Greek Yogurt - a nice boost of protein there too (11-13g per 5 oz cup) There's also something called Getatein - it's a cup of Jello but it packs in 20g of protein into a little cup. They are insanely expensive and the taste is "acquired", but if you can get it down, it's pretty good especially in these early weeks. You can find it on Amazon. I use Premier Protein shakes - 30g protein per shake. They come in chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. They really aren't too bad. Also can be found on Amazon or at Sam's Club. Best of luck and if you discover any additional tricks, please let us know!
  12. I have Quest bars 1-3 times a month. The net carbs are low, but they are a really processed item. I keep on in my purse just for emergencies. i'd drop the egg and the Protein bar for lunch and have baked fish, grilled chicken, deli ham or something. i would also trade the yogurts for like a Syntrax nectar. You will feel more satisfied with eating real food, that is denser. Fish is not dense but it is more filling than yogurt. You are eating a lot of processed food and sneaking in a lot of unnecessary carbs. This isn't a bad menu now and then for busy days but I wouldn't eat like this every day. I also wouldn't pack in so many calories at dinner. I would have that dinner meal at lunch and the lunch meal at dinner. At 3 months you are still healing. When you get further out, like 5 or 6 months. Those yogurts are not going to satisfy you you are going to be constantly hungry. You need more real solid food, and build a habit of it. quest bars, depending on what bar you choose, don't last in the stomach that long either. At 3 months I did one or 2 Protein shakes a day and the rest was baked fish. Quest bars as emergency/treat food only. Like if I wanted fruit I had a quest fruit flavored bar instead.
  13. I am nearly at 3 months and that is pretty close to what my meal plan looks like. Just like you, I use Greek yogurt as a mid-morning & mid-day snack. I have a Quest bar for Breakfast and have generally stopped drinking Protein shakes. Instead, I tend to eat 3 oz of turkey breast or lean roast beef at lunch. I wind up right around 100g of protein and 850-900 calories. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. Am I eating too little? too much? not enough real food? Please "weigh in" (pardon the pun). 6:30 AM Premier Protein Drink 160 calories 30 g protein 7:15 AM Water 16 oz 0 0 8:45 AM Water 16 oz 0 0 10:30 AM Yogurt Dannon Greek Lite 80 calories 12 g protein 11:15 AM Water 16 oz. 0 0 12:45 PM Egg boiled 70 calories 6 g protein 1:45 PM Quest Protein Bar 170 calories 20 g protein 3:00 PM Propel Vitamin Drink 16 oz 0 0 5:00 PM Yogurt Dannon Greek lite 80 calories 12 g protein 7:00 PM Water 16 oz 0 0 8:30 PM chicken breast/ 400 calories 25 g protein black beans/broccoli Totals 80 oz 960 calories 105 g protein. This is REAL CLOSE to what I am doing daily, sometimes eating tuna salad for lunch instead of a protein bar, and having different varieties for supper. What do you think?

    Stages

Hello Everyone! I was sleeved on 1/25, so I will be one week out tomorrow! My food stages look like this (as per doctor and NUT) STAGE ONE- Clear liquids *Day of and Day after Surgery STAGE TWO- Full Liquids *Day 3 until 2 week Post Op Appt (Surgeon will clear) STAGE THREE- Soft Foods including... deli meats, steamed fished, eggs, Beans, melted cheese, dry toast, crackers, tuna, yogurt... *2 weeks post op- 2 month post op Appt My question is... Has anyone else had similar stages; time wise? I am happy to be able to start eating way more stuff next week, but I see most people post about being on Full liquid/purees for 4 weeks. Has anyone else started soft foods at 2 weeks post op?
  16. Have you made the Ricotta Bake yet? It is really good. I ate a lot of refried Beans with cheese melted on top. That was pretty much my go to. Other than that, I ate mashed up avocado; 1/2 container of greek yogurt with 1/2 scoop of vanilla Protein powder; sugar free chocolate pudding snack with 1/2 scoop of chocolate Protein powder mixed in; hummus (just with a spoon); pimiento cheese (a Southern thing if you have never heard of it - also was able to mix in a little unflavored protein powder). I don't necessarily have any recipes for you (other than referring you to the Ricotta Bake). I just ate a lot of things that I put together on my plate that I could tolerate.

  19. Yes. What @@2goldengirl said. Promise you will feel restriction once you start solid foods. The nerves in your stomach are healing so you won't get the same feelings of restriction right now. And remember, just because you are physically able to eat it, doesn't mean you should. Keep your portions small. Try 1/2 container of yogurt with 1/2 scoop of vanilla Protein powder. It will help with protein and should fill you up a little more. Follow your doctors plan to a T!
  20. Stop freaking out, it isn't necessary. If you read theough these boards, you will find that it's very common not to feel much restriction while you're on liquids and semiliquids like yogurt. Relax. Breathe. You're fine.
  21. I had mine done in june 2015. I still occasionally do a protein shake and I have yogurt for breakfast. I eat a lot of cheese, almonds, seafood, cottage cheese, bacon, eggs, and much more. You really need to start getting creative! That is sometimes very hard for me as my taste buds have changed since surgery. I am down over 150 pounds as of today!
  22. I have been able to drink 8 oz broth and Protein shakes no problem for past couple of days. My doctor's post op diet is full liquid, which includes greek yogurt. I just tried that today was able to eat a 5.3 oz cup, no problem. I feel satisfied, but not full or anything else. I thought sure yogurt would make me feel some restriction since it is not very liquid-y. Freaking out a little! I plan to ask my doctor about it but I don't see him for over a week. I hope my pouch isn't too big or there isn't an issue???
  23. Proudmam1319 here's my sample menu: Breakfast options: Premier Protein Shake/1 large egg white and 2 slices of turkey bacon or morningstar sausage pattie/nonfat greek yogurt/protein cheerios with fairlife skim milk lunch options: Premier Protein/3 oz tuna or chicken salad with 4 whole wheat crackers/non fat greek yogurt/ dinner options: 3 oz mahi mahi, salmon or tilapia with 1/8 vegetables/1 veggie burger with 2 slices of canned fruit/3 turkey meatballs with 1/8 vegetables, 4 oz spilt pea and ham Soup Snacks: 1/2 Quest protein bar/8 oz of Fiber tea/ 1/2 a cup of applesauce/ 1/2 chobani greek nonfat yogurt/ boomchickapop Popcorn 1/2 a bag My meals usually average between 600-800 calories. I try to eat more on days that I work out, but I never over stuff myself. I always listen to my body and even throw away food Once I'm satisfied. You have to find out what works for you because everybody is different.
  24. I'm about 3 1/2 months post surgery and I have noticed that I wake up feeling kind of angry and put out at inconveniences and I was never like that before. Well, I was probably so drugged with food and carbs that I didn't notice it. I've been taking Probiotics since surgery which I thought would help but this negative attitude is interfering with work relationships not being as happy go lucky as I was. i've read lots of articles that changing the biology of your gut changes your mood and that kind of thing and I was just wondering if anyone else had noticed that since surgery and if so what might be a good cure other than yogurt and probiotics. According to this article, among many others taking probiotics seems to be a good idea for mood, maybe I just need more. http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2015/06/gut-bacteria-on-the-brain/395918/?utm_source=SFFB
  25. Totally understand about your desire to get away from the protein shakes/bars, but I'm the total opposite. It's crazy, because I'll get up and make my kids eggs and bacon, but I have a very difficult time consuming anything like that anymore since surgery. I have three breakfast staples I choose from on almost a daily basis: Greek yogurt w/ a scoop of quality protein powder and either flax or chia seeds!; a Quest protein bar if I need something more solid and two three times a week I add a protein shake as a late breakfast kicker to help load up on my protein goal for the day. Once a week I add a fruit and protein smoothie to the mix. I may eat a small serving of oatmeal or high fiber cereal occasionally, but I'm always cautious about the sugar and carbohydrates associated with those last two. Like many have said in this topic, experiment with what makes you feel good about eating breakfast and as long as it keeps you on track for you WL goals you will be fine.
