1. Yay Steve - That’s so wonderful - so glad for you. Yes it is an emotional roller coaster. Food just like any other drug can control our lives and we just have to move on from those things that are hurting us. Just keep doing what your doing - looking at the (non food) positives like the being able to move better, less pain, less medications, etc. Look at us. We are Irish and I have to give up bread and potatoes. OMG.... - but I know it will be so worth it. Gosh I can't wait to fit in the tub again. LOL I too am excited about the idea of being able to move better. Just to do my own toes, work in my own garden without spending the whole next couple day recuperating from it. It will be so worth it, you will see. Find new interests – bowling, hiking, hunting – things that don’t relate to food. Like I love painting, crochet, and gardening. I’m putting a lot of focus into these things and not so much on the culinary stuff. All it has done is make me miserable like I’m sure it has you. I too was a bit ashamed to tell people. Like I failed or something.. taking the easy way out. I’ve gotten so over that. I’ve tried for 20 years to deal with my weight with many programs, diets, exercise routines and stuff. I have to say I really did try. So the heck with what others say. You’re doing this for YOU and your family. Losing the weight to be healthy and prolong life to be with your family What ever the reason. What people say doesn’t matter. I haven’t announced like all out, but most people I know, know. I don’t miss work and it was really hard to explain the taking 2 week off so most my coworker know too. But no one has been negative at all. Actually way opposite. Please do keep us updated on your progress. My surgery date is July 12th so same as you sooo nervous but ready to get on with this new chapter in my life. Praying for you and a more healthier and active future. GrInS
2. It's been a great journey thus far - six 1/2 months after my gastric bypass on May 14. I'm not going to say it's all been easy. Recently I've been through a bump in the road having a bowel obstruction and removal of my gallbladder, but I'm getting stronger each day. I will be running again in no time!! Today I've reached the 100 lb loss and I wanted to share this great news with all of you! I'm so excited. Thank you all for your guidance and support. Love you all. <3
3. Welcome to the board! You may find something useful in a post I made last year: http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/249104-the-pre-op-diet-is-not-a-punishment-its-an-opportunity/ I'll quote it below, but you may want to read some of the responses, for inspiration and ideas! Keep in mind, after surgery you'll be on liquids for at least a couple of weeks while you're healing, then slowly reintroducing more solid foods. So an extra 2 weeks pre-op won't seem so long after surgery and you'll be a "pro" when it's post-op time. There's a lot to think about and deal with in the early post-op days, so if you're already in a "groove' with an all liquid diet, it will really help! Good luck with the 4 week pre-op. Lots of great info and support here, and keep the questions coming....we're all happy to share our experiences.
4. I also had twins via an emergency c section with a bikini line incision from hip bone to hp bone. My revision from Lap Band to the sleeve doesn't not even come close to the pain from that. Like maybe 25 to 30%. My stomach muscles just felt like I'd had a brutal ab work out at the gym, and the surface incisions had some minor pain for a few weeks.

6 Days Post-Op

I can't believe that it's already been 6 days since my lap-band surgery. I'm doing really well, still a bit sore but that is only at the port site, and I had been warned about that. I also get a fair bit of gas pain, but that is also to be suspected too. The hardest thing for me at the moment is the Fluid diet. Living on juice, smoothies and Soup is really very difficult and I can totally see how some people weaken at this point and eat solid food before the band has had time to settle. The thought of all the money that I've spent and that I have come this far already without doing the wrong thing is enough for me to continue on. I have one more week of fluids and 2 weeks of soft foods before I can live normally again. It isn't forever and will be so worth it in the end. On the day of my surgery I had officially lost 5.6kg on the Optifast diet which I was so happy about. I had expected a bit more but the Optifast program had bound things up a bit (so to speak) so that halted things a little. I'm also finding this to be an issue this first week post-op as well so I am expecting the first few weeks to move along pretty slowly. Once I am eating and exercising properly I am sure I will fall into a rhythm and will worry about it from then. I'll weight myself tomorrow morning and let you know how I go. Anyway, thanks for reading and joining me on my journey xxx

So confused

Any chance your GERD is related to a hiatal hernia? I had horrible heartburn pre-op, and my surgeon actually repaired a very small hiatal hernia I had at the same time that he did the lapband. I didn't even know I had the hernia, but he did tell me that he'd fix it if he got in there and found one. Guess what? I've been banded for 6 weeks and have not had ANY problems with heartburn, GERD, etc. It's the most wonderful feeling! He did say that most people, even after just losting the first 20 - 30 pounds, notice a major improvement with any sort of acid indigestion. Also, my surgeon gave me a 2 - 3 cc fill when he put the LB in. I've lost 30 pounds since New Year's, when I started the pre-op liquid diet (had a second fill about a week and a half ago). I realize it's going to be different for everyone, and maybe I'm biased, but I think the LB is the best way to go!

Weight gain before surgery

Oh yes! This has certainly happened to me. From the day I paid my surgery deposit 3 weeks ago, until today, which is day one of my preop diet, I ate everything in sight. Gained 8 pounds during that 3 week period. I am so disgusted with myself that I'm almost relieved to be on this strict diet prep phase. I'm concerned that I won't be able to controll my food addictions after surgery.

Pain

I'm 3 weeks out as well, and I definitely get Sharp pains. For me it's mostly gas, I literally walk it off or stretch. Sent from my 831C using BariatricPal mobile app
9. My surgeon gave all of his patients an entire manual to take you through every stage of the bandster diet from pre op through weight maintenance. He advised waiting until reaching 3 months post op to begin having dark leafy raw veggies. I followed his recommendations, and have never experienced any negative effects from having a very small salad using romaine lettuce most days of the week. As always though, when you have questions, it's best to begin with finding the answers through your surgeon.

Port: Where's yours?

I am 5 weeks post op and my port is buried deep within. I can not feel it at all but my surgeon says it is half way between my belly button and sternum. I was not given a choice of where it went.

Need your input protein shots

My husband has been researching the same thing for me today. He found one that is sugar free and only 1 carb. It has 35 grams of Protein in a 3 oz 'shot'. He found it on Walgreens.com but it's only available for purchase locally. It's call Six Star Pro Nutrition Elite Series Instant liquid Protein Shot 35. We just now ran to the only local 24-hour Walgreens that carries it and bought the three they had on the shelf (flavor of berry Blast). Mine are chilling now so I can't yet say how good they are, but I'm hoping they help supplement the shakes, which are starting to nauseate me. Details on these particular protein shots are here: http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/six-star-pro-nutrition-elite-series-instant-liquid-protein-shot-35/ID=prod6051376-product Good luck!

two questions please

Getting in more fluids is the only reason I can think of that would justify them saying 3 meals a day. I normally only eat 3 times a day, but I eat a cup of food each time. I also drink a venti caramel mocha almost every day, made with skim milk and only 2 pumps of mocha instead of 5 and sf caramel (total 220 calories 17g protein that are well worth it). So, with the drink I get in more fluids and the calories and protein as well. When I don't drink one, I do eat an extra meal.
14. I'm on my 2nd week of pre op diet. First week I could have 2 Protein shakes and one meal of 4 oz lean meat and steamed vegtables. I did pretty good with the exception of 2 bags of snack size peanuts. (Hey, that's Protein, at least!) I'm on the 2nd week of 4 protein shakes a day, broth and that's about it. I've been cheating. I have a friend that I go walking with and at dinnner I have been having a very healthy salad w/ a little cheese & almonds. I've been using a vinigarette dressing - not fat free. I don't think I've done that bad. See if the idea is to shrink your liver - I don't see one salad a day as something that would prohibit that. Do you? Today is Day 3 of 2nd week. I've got a date w/ my girlfriend to ditch my husband and come over for my evening salad. Should I keep that date? Am I doing that bad? Do you think it could hurt me?
15. Bless your heart! I had two weeks and it really wasn't that bad. The crunch bars might help a lot. I found warm herby chicken broth really helped with hunger more than cold Protein drinks. I wasn't allowed any Soup, just broth.
16. Thinking of Banding Hi... I am have an appointment with the Doctors in 3 weeks. Still unsure if I want to get the surgery .... I need to drop about 100kgs ... I just want my life back ... is there anyone else out there that has had to loose this much ... help me make the decision.
17. Rev Me Up!

Week One behind me! Welcome , Week Two!

It seems that people have one or the other - either they have diarrhea or they don't poop for a week. Definitely, all the artificial sweeteners will do it to you. Good idea to move to more broth - it also has sodium which will help you retain a little Water. That sounds bad, but it is good if you are worried about dehydration. Once you get to mushies and you start eating yogurt and cottage cheese, you'll see it swing the other way. Glad to hear you are feeling better. The first month is tough, but the first 2 weeks are specifically hard. Physical and emotional changes are so intense in that time. Rest assured, you will feel more normal in a few weeks. Keep coming back to the board, we're all here for you! Lara

Got a Fill Date!

I went to my 2 week post-op appointment, and asked about my fear that I was stretching my pouch by eating too much food. The nurse told me it was to be expected, and it just meant I was healing well. She told me that I could book my first fill for January 4th!, and can come back every two weeks until I'm at proper restriction. I'm so excited. Let the real journey begin! Meghan

How Long Were Yall Out Of Work?

I am 2 weeks post op and I have 4 weeks off. Before surgery I thought that was too much time. But now I am about 70% capacity with my energy. This whole food thing is really confusing and time consuming for me. I have read all the notes from my classes talked to the dietician and surgeon but now that I am in the trenches I can't seem to get a schedule set with the water etc. I am glad I am not At work it would make things worse right now. Plus I don't know what agrees with me and what does not. Don't want to figure that out at work.
22. Hi all, I was banded on 3/25 and am down 45 pds (20 pre op). Really other than minor issues it really didn't feel like I had much restriction. Well yesterday i got my 3rd fill and am now at 5.5 in a 10 cc band. Well I got real hungry today and ate too fast and didn't chew.... well had my 1st PB. and hopefully it will be my last.

What to do?

I feel you on the doubt and questioning your decision. I am about 2 weeks from surgery and I keep tossing those same questions around. However, I have a few other questions that I like to remind myself of whenever I'm doubting my choice: How long can I realistically expect to live at my current weight? You typically don't see very obese people over 65. What will my quality of life be if I don't lose weight? I dread flying, going to an amusement park, meeting strangers, eating out, going to any event where the seat might be too small or the chair too weak, etc. Will I let fear keep me from changing my life for the better? All of your worries are ligit, and I think we all have them. In the end, you have to weight the pros and cons and make your own choice. Yes this surgery has some risks, but so does everything else in life. Best of luck with your decision.
24. Well I've been hanging out reading for a while and now.....here I am waiting for approval from insurance for VSG. Now all these questions arise again.... 1. Should I? What if something goes wrong? What if I have major stomach problems for the rest of my life because of this surgery?? (diarrhea, vomiting, etc...) 2. What about the wrinkly, saggy skin? (my skin doesn't snap back as before since I'm 51 now) 3. Will my hair grow back? 4. Does having the VSG change our labs? (blood work) Are we anemic (etc... ? 5. Wish I could lose a bit slower so I won't have to explain to everyone that I am "not sick". Only my husband knows I'm having the surgery. Thank you for taking the time to listen to me. I'd appreciate any words of encouragement or discouragement. If there is something I have not thought about or should add to my list of growing questions, feel free to let me know. It's wonderful to have this site. I appreciate everyone on here in making an informed decision for myself. Female, Age 51, 207#, 5' 3.5", need to lose 30 -40 pounds to get rid of meds Goal is to lose 72# average 5 out of 7 days acid reflux problems with occasional vomiting.
25. I couldn't bend over for at least a week, if not more. I thought that I would go stir crazy but the surgery really did take a lot out of me.
