    What's Your Caloric Sweet Spot?

Interesting comments above . I am 3 months out and averaging about 10-15 lb loss a month in the last month , but I am am only about 15 lbs from my goal and I was a lower BMI. I can’t do 500-600 a day most days , as I am very active , spin 5x a week and get 10k steps . Seem to be settling at the 800-1000 calories range with 1-2 protein drinks a day and at least one yogurt in order to get protein grams in ... hard to eat enough protein honestly
  2. Hi all, I had the gastric sleeve done on 2/19/19. I have been having complications since. I want to know if anyone has had a similar experience. I'm having serious buyers remorse. After my sleeve I had severe nausea and vomiting issues. I informed my surgeon's office and was told to sit up more and move around. I felt initially it was working. A few days after my surgery I got a call that my stomach that was removed tested positive for H. Poly. The doctor ordered a course of strong antibiotics. My nausea skyrocketed. Now just 4 weeks after surgery I have had 2 week long admits with really no resolution. I went through test that say my esophagus lower valve will not squeeze fluid or food into my stomach. Though the actual stomach is fine. I have an immune disorder called Polymyositis that the doctor believes is the problem but prior to the surgery my esophagus was working fine. I'm not getting any answers on what can be done to promote my esophagus to start working again. My surgeon is suggesting TPN or a feeding tube as I am unable to hold anything down. Neither of which I want. Has anyone had a similar situation?
  3. I'm so excited, I'm doing the happy dance! I just got a message from my pulmonologist's office letting me know the results of my in-home sleep study last week. I've had Obstructive Sleep Apnea for 3 years and using a CPAP. I had gastric sleeve surgery 12/11/18 and have lost 35 pounds since surgery/50 pounds overall and so I felt like maybe I no longer needed the CPAP. She said the results are that I NO LONGER NEED A CPAP! I don't have to sleep with that thing strapped to my face anymore! The weight loss did it! Now this one deserves a happy dance too, but I didn't get an exciting phone call about it . . . I also no longer have GERD since my sleeve surgery 3.5 months ago! I've had GERD for 10+ years and had it pretty bad in the first couple of weeks after surgery, but now it's gone away completely. Woo-Hoo! Woot-Woot! 🙂

    Severe Gerd?

I had it originally placed in 2005. It slipped in 2014, had it redone and then it slipped again in 2018. Revised to sleeve on 2/18/2019. Other than the slips no other issues that I knew of.

    December 2018 Sleevers!

Hey guys, I haven't checked in for while. I hope everyone's doing well. I know I am doing great. I am sticking with the modified Keto and exercise routine. The scale hasn't moved much in the past six week--only down about 5 or 6 pound. However, during that time I lost: 1.5% of my body fat (down to 16.5%); 1.5 inches off my waist; inch off my chest (down to 42 from a 50) and a quarter inch off my neck (down to 16.5" from 18.5" in the fall). My pants size is now a 32, down from a 44 this past summer. I have gone from wearing XXL shirts to M slim fit shirts (sometimes large slim depending on the brand). At this point, I am not really sure how much more weight I am going to be losing. I am ok where I am. Aside from the number on the scale, all of my aesthetic goals have been met (or are very close to being met). More importantly, I just had my 3 month follow up last week. My blood work looks great. My triglycerides are down to a 54 (they were over 450 last summer). My good cholesterol is up three fold to 96. My A1C's have dropped from a 6.3 (with 1000mg of MetFormin and 1.8mg of Victoza) in November to a 5.1 with no medications. As of now, all my nutrional numbers look good and are well within normal ranges, including vitamin D, B12, B6, Calcium, Iron etc. Of course, nutritional deficits can take a while to show up in blood work, so we'll see how they look again in three months. So, far the only downside is that my once very thick hair is thinning a bit. Not loving that, but no one can really tell yet except me (hope it stays that way). I am taking my biotin, but not sure how much it really helps (can't hurt though). I would still trade lush hair for a slim body any day. Anyway, here's a picture from this past weekend (3/23/19):

    Keto diet question

I disagree with with Dabeyhive and RickM's comments above. Sure, keto isn't for everyone, but it's great for many people. I love the fact that it gives me some firm rules to follow and it happens to fit my eating preferences. First, I don't believe Keto is a fad diet at all. It's been around in various forms since the 1920's and became the basis of the original Atkin's diet in the early 1970's. It works very well both for weight loss and general health benefits. The problem is that some people don't really understand the diet or follow it correctly--and that's where people into problems. Following a proper Keto diet doesn't mean you should be chowing down on cheeseburgers without the bun eating bacon with every meal. While cheeseburgers and bacon are not prohibited on Keto, those aren't recommended either. You should stick to things like organic eggs, lean organic meats and wild caught fatty fish (like sockeye salmon). Stay away from fatty meats, since the fat is bad things the animals consumed are stored. You then add healthy fats to your food, like avocado, MCT oil, extra virgin olive oil, ghee etc. The idea is to "prime the pump", so you body burns off its excess glycogen stores and then converts stored fats into ketones for energy. This is important, especially if you're insulin resistant. For me, I am really happy with Keto and I can definitely stay on keto long term. My surgeon and nutritionist are on board with my keto choices. I just had my blood work done after 2 months on Keto and everything was perfect. I am no longer diabetic (A1C dropped from 6.3 on multiple meds to 5.1 on no meds). My triglycerides dropped to 54 (they were 450 this past summer on meds). My cholesterol is 190, but my good cholestrol is 97 (which is outstanding)--so that's good. Some of these may be from the surgery, but diet and exercise are equally critical. I suggest that you don't do keto on your own, but you do with with the guidance of a doctor or nutritionist that has a lot of knowledge about keto. I personally keep my net carbs down to approximately 20g a day and close to a 1:1 ration of fat to protein. At this point, I am 14 weeks post op (99 days). I am eating between 1200-1600 calories a day. Those calories are made up of 45% protein, 45% fat and 10% carbs. The carbs I am consuming are mostly from vegetables--even green veggies have some carbs. I don't eat any bread, starches, potatoes, sugar etc. I avoid high carb fruit, but I am allowed berries. I avoid processed foods to the greatest extent I can. I also work out daily--at a high intensity (and have been since I had all physical restrictions removed 1 month after surgery). I have lost 70 pounds since my highest weigh in. My pants size has dropped from a 44 to a 32. My body fat has dropped from 28% to 16.5%. Weight loss surgery is only a tool (a good one), but I would say it gives you a head start and helps prepare balance your body's hormones and stomach so people like me (morbidly obese, with a trifecta of co-morbidities) can lose weight like a normal person without insulin resistance/diabetes and other issues that get in the way. Once I had those issues, in check the rest of it was up to me--with keto and serious exercise making the big difference in getting me to where I want to be. I'll let my pictures speak for themselves: The was me on July 4, 2018 (weighing around 255-260) : This is me on the day of Surgery (weight 235): This is me on March 23, 2019 (weighing 190): As a 45 year old man with diabetes etc., no way I could have done this without VSG. However, I really believe Keto and exercise (45 minutes moderate to high intensity cardio 5-6 times a week and 1 hour of high intensity weight training 4-5 times a week) have changed my health and my life. I can't imagine going back to the life I had before surgery, nor could I imagine not living a keto lifestyle at this point.

Six months post-op+ : The Sophomores Thread

    1. I am overwhelmed by clothes shopping. I have literally nothing to wear for spring or summer, I have an amazing trip planned for Hawaii and I want to look great in my clothes but keep going in stores and not buying anything. Do they have nude beaches??? Hope so or else I’m gonna spend all of Hawaii in jail. 2. I’ve realized that every single pound from this point forward is going to come off only with really hard work and dedication. I feel mixed about that. I still want to lose 30 and that seems ... challenging. 3. I worry that I am a “bad” Bariatric patient because I eat all kinds of foods. 4. My neck looks just ridiculous. Lol. It looks like it is melting off. 5. I am y’all 5’9” and super limber and sometimes Iately I feel like a praying mantis with my long long legs. 6. Sex is way more fun lately. (5 and 6 kind of related) 7. My feet shrunk from an 11 to a 10 and a whole shoe world has opened to me. 8. My love for coffee has deepened to an alarming level. It is probably not the healthiest. But as a night shift RN in an ICU and a mom to 3 young kids, people will have to pry the Dunkin’ Donuts coffee with cream and Splenda from my cold, my freezing icy numb cold dead hands.

    April 2019 Surgeries!

My 10 day liver shrinking pre op diet starts tomorrow. It’s hard to believe I will having my revision surgery in 9 days. I am so ready to get it done and start living my new life. I have my shakes, crystal light mixes, sugar free jello and broths ready for the work day tomorrow! I usually do well throughout the day until 3pm ish when I start feeling that head hunger. I’m telling myself to keep busy at work because when I am busy I don’t even think about eating! Wish me luck!
  15. Had my surg on July 10 2018. Went to the ER a week or two later or a stomach pain...turns out it was pancreatitis. I started at 276 and now I'm at 216. I feel like I should have definitely lost more by now. 😖
  16. So, I ordered a few clearance dresses for work because I am swimming in everything I own! I ordered an XL dress, and pulled the 18W/18’s out of the closet. The 18’s all fit!! The dresses fit! Feeling a bit adventurous, I went to JCPenney and purchased some work shirts! XL work shirts with room to spare!! This tool is amazing..... but busting my butt in the gym everyday is doing magic on this body composition!! HW: 301 SW: 279 (Sleeved 1/28/19) CW: 251

    March 2019 sleepers

Hi y’all! I was sleeved on March 8th. I live in Texas and had my surgery done in Mexico. Everything went according to plan - but they set this expectation that the recovery time was a couple days...maybe 10 days max! I had the worst pain, could barely walk, was a crying mess, and kept having panic attacks because two other women had their surgeries the same day I did and were up and walking, saying they weren’t in pain! My incision site pain has been awful, didn’t help that the doc only sent me across the border with four pain pills and can’t prescribe in the U.S. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m about two weeks post-op and STILL am sore at my incision sites. It’s lessened, but is still pretty prevalent. Anyone else have this issue?

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Dubchild I'm 3 1/2 weeks post surgery, lost 19 lbs. I have a group of friends who we get together once or so a month for a few beers, wings, watch the game and generally BS. As you can see from the various posts doctors orders vary widely. From reading posts from other threads it is apparent that many men are able to have a occasional drink. I would check with your surgeon and explain the situation. My plans are to try a lite beer in a few months, I'm more concerned about the carbonation rather than the alcohol content as most of the light beers have minimal alcohol content. With the wings peel off the skin and enjoy one or two, with both moderation is key. Until a few months pass I would simply say to the guys that you have been on a doctor ordered diet and no booze right now. Make use there is some non carb drink to enjoy. People aren't going to count how many wings or drinks you are having. Rest assured the best is yet to come, don't miss the good times- just make a plan. Congratulations on your success! Curiously I believe that you, Marine, and I are the only men in the feb group.
  22. I've been collecting products since before my first appointment 10/30/18; I know that many people caution against buying so much ahead of time, but I like having options and I understand my taste buds may change after surgery. I am using a lot of the products in the two plus months before surgery.

  25. I'm back! And the beat of my life goes on and on. Decided to post here because I was the OP and started it beck last summer. Well, the Fe Infusion wasn't too awfully bad, when I told PCP I had it done, nary an apology about failing to schedule me one in Mount Vernon, just reminded me I could end up on a quarterly schedule. Well that would make the next one within a day or 2 of Tomkitten's birthday and that's a warm pleasant time in Central Ohio. Now back to the Infusion and its side effect. Well early in the evening of the next day I was able to do #2 with a minimum of grief. Every since surgery except when I had my PICC line in, my stool is very reluctant to leave me, have to be on twice daily Miralax and when not even that works, the Trusty bottle of M.O.M. the cherry- tasting agitator of all things fecal💩. Okay I said to myself, small amount of stool, still fine, I do not eat that much. And then the tsunami hit, black viscous stool, the kind I rationalize as double or triple wiper. And it went on and on, each movement the same until the last 3 which ended about. 3 AM that were nothing more than black profuse water. And before each movement I was cramping in the same area as childbirth pains, I had 3 9+ pounder, last 2 Lamaze, that is an sensation one does not forget. Well, I says if your uterus does fall on with all this straining , we can push it back in , slap an ABD on it and see the doctor in the AM. If this is gonna happen every time, I would rather be unmagnetic, obviously my body didn't feel we needed or wanted that much iron so got rid of it as best it could! Now I don't know if I mentioned but when I had my Chest MRI at Mount Carmel East to check the status of my Thoracic Aortic aneurysm, the one my Cardiologist conveniently forgot to mention, maybe she thought it would depress me? OMG, my middle child and first son died in 2008 of an Ascending Aortic aneurysm which exploded in his chest and within a few seconds bled out and died at 31. This takes it from a horrid one in thousands freaky happening to be possibly genetic and. I , a mommy who loved him with every breath of my being, may have had a part in his destruction? I cried when I saw in Black and White, " to rule out ant enlargement of existing Thoracic Aortic aneurysm, current measurement____cm" , did not go into depression, because maybe my baby's death might somehow save me? Happy to report it is still holding at under " must do surgery" have to keep faithful on BP meds to reduce stressors. But I can do that! And now the results show I have a Renal Cyst also present, don't know which one of my 3 it's on, urologists office not as worried as me, said no need seeing you right now. Then next, about 10- 12 days ago I woke up with a stiff neck, not a "oops I strained something ", I could not turn it to either side, and I had a degree of nucal rigidity. Oh I am a Medical Geek, scary cause that can be a sign of meningitis, a disease that doesn't take hostages, and can kill if neglected. So off I go to E.R., it of course happened on a day PCP was taking off. After beaucoup levels of tests even I hadn't been through before and 2 I didn't even have book knowledge of, I received a diagnosis of cervical arthritis, okay-bee, the bad part I have a thyroid nodule approaching 2 cm on left side of thyroid. They suggested getting it checked-out by ENT, endocrinologist, or at very least PCP in very near future. Well , I just so happened to have an appointment with PCP coming up, so I mentioned it to him, at first he said" many geriatric patients have these" could shorten that man's life span, I am not geriatric I merely am in Late Middle Age and I've told him that! Says" maybe I should go to that portal and read what they said" and then had to admit We GOT to do more testing, so last Wednesday I had both thyroid screening and Doppler of my carotid because I also am having periods of double vision, it is bad enough seeing Donald Sr and Donald Jr on CNN , don't need them 2 at a time! Then to round out my week I had a Reclast INFUSION on Friday, in deference to my inability to chug down liquids, Thank You Ms. Precious Pouch, I can't have pills or capsules so get this treatment yearly because my osteopenia is rounding the corner towards osteoporosis. I am grateful to be alive, thankful for the extra years my bariatric surgery has granted me, really I am, but is every flippin' test got to have a " by the way"? I knew I had dings in my bodily chassis, but does the jalopy that is me have to have engine failure too?💦
