    Emotional Band Crisis

You are not alone, I have 4.5cc's in my 10cc band as of my first fill on Monday. The swelling gave me great restriction at first, but now the swelling is gone and once again I can eat more than I should be able to, but I cannot eat nearly as much as I could pre fill. My weight loss to this point has been due to counting calories and dealing with the hunger, knowing that the hunger won't last forever. You can do it, but you have to work with the band, calories do count. Hang in there, it will get better

Happy (almost) One-Year Bandaversary -- and congratulations on your weight loss and all the hard work it has taken to get to this place. Best wishes!

    Third Surgiversary

Missed you, Globe! You are not fat. Having sixty pounds to lose does not make you fat - so I suggest you unpack your before pictures and do a real side by side to at least cut yourself some slack here. Congrats on three long and painful years of struggling with your weight and body image - this has been a rough haul for you. The sleeve does work as far as capacity. I wish you were here more to show new folks the reality that eating small portions forever isn't always the perfect solution they think it will be. Best to you - go visit the vet forum, we've been worried about you! ~Cheri
  4. Hey! I have had the gall bladder thingy happen to me (I am not yet banded), so I can understand that you feel really bad. But, you did not bring that on yourself. It is temporary. Once you get healed and feel better, you can get back on the band wagon and get started on the weight loss again. Do not accept these things as defeats! You want to stay around for a long time, so look at this as a journey for the rest of your life. Not a quick sprint to the end, but a beautiful long journey. This is just a very short stop. Be positive in this and before you realize it, you will have forgotten all about the gall bladder and will be amazed at how well you feel and look! Elgrad
  5. Well I am on day 3 of my pre op diet. I think the headache is gone, finally. I have been on a diet like this before , so I know it was going to happen. I been doing good, no cheating. I do think about food, but I just reread instructions from my doctor. NO FOOD... I do keep thinking, " is this all worth it", will I be able to be normal again. But then I think. I have never eaten "normal". I think about what it will be like not to shop in the plus sizes. ( I will be there for a while still) but the real thought that this is happening. I am going to lose the weight this time. One of the scariest things I have been reading is that many people only lose 50% of their excess weight. That is not enough. Even through it will still improve my health. I want to be active for the first time in my life. I want to workout and like it. My surgery is November 18th.
  6. From the album: Before, during, after VSG, 40F no kids

It took about 10 days for the swelling to go down so I could see actual weight loss. I noticed a change in shape earlier with the upper part of my belly being less puffy.

    Just read this on MSN

Wow, she looks great, I hope the Band works for her, and she doesn't wind up struggling like so many do with it. And yes, I was just reading a thread on a different forum of a girl having to gain weight because she was denied by her insurance. I think she was only had to gain 10lbs. I can completely understand the desperation to have WLS, and people gaining a few lbs. I just wish people weren't pressured to do such things to try to have surgery to improve their health and lose the weight, it's sad really.
  8. Hi everyone I am currently 26 years old and I am due to have gastric bypass surgery on Tuesday December 18th. I have been told by my nutritionist to go on a two-week pre-operation diet only consisting of Medi fast protein shakes. I was very strict on the diet until tonight I completely broke down and had a 12 inch italian bread with scrambled eggs in it. I feel completely guilty. But I was starving due to the fact that I have not had any solid foods since December 4th. I was feeling really emotional/irritable and overall starving. I started my weight-loss Journey at 304lbs. Today I weigh 290. During my 6 months of nutritional monitoring I was not exactly doing my best I did not lose much weight because I was not consistent .But just on the shake diet that I have been on I have lost a total weight of 7 pounds. I feel so quilty like I ruined my whole diet. I know the whole point of this is to shrink our liver size which mine was 19cm which is over the normal by like 3cm from what I have read. Have any of you screwed up like this before? And do you think me being very strict for the remainder of the 5 days will do me any good after I cheated horribly tonight 😟

    *Deep Breathes* Don't Panic*

Dont panic too much but DO unfill in small increments. I've only had one unfill when I was a bit concerned that 1000 calories a day or so (which was all I could eat) really wasnt sufficient nutrition for me personally. .2 ml made SO much difference, I actually gained about 4 or 5 lb and ended up having the fill put back in over time. Now I maintain on about 1800 to 2000 a day and THAT's my rough mental calculations - so its probably more. If you're tall, healthy and active, you CAN eat rather a lot. 1200 calories a day - its more for little women of average activity to lose, not for us glamazons to maintain, lol.
  11. Mini vent: Stupid stalls! I've lost 2 lbs in 2 weeks. Yeah, the scale's moving, but I've been used to a consistent 3 lbs a week. Like clockwork. I know this is normal. I know it's my body's natural adjustment to rapid loss. I know the scale isn't the only measure of success. In fact, I know I'm continuing to get smaller despite the scale. My personal trainer did my latest measurements, and in 2 and half weeks, I'd lost 3.25" from my hips, 2" from my waist, 3.25" from my thighs, and even 1.5" from my calves. No change to my upper arms though. I know these things, but I still can't help but get frustrated. I'm not beating myself up per se. In fact, I'm still feeling pretty dang good about myself. I bought my very first bikini the other day to celebrate hitting a BMI of 29. I just really really want to reach my goal, and this "honeymoon period" and "window of opportunity" stuff makes me nervous. I feel like I'm in a race against the clock to reach my goal in the first 8-ish months. Which means I have 3 more months to lose 48 lbs. To do that, I need to average 4 lb loss a week. So yeah, stalls are frustrating. Here are the numbers: Height: 5'6.5" Highest weight: 289 Starting weight (9/13): 268 Day of surgery (12/10/13): 254 Current weight: 188 Goal weight: 140 I go to the gym 4 times a week and work with a personal trainer once a week. I get between 400-600 cals a day. I get between 50-65 grams of protein a day. 70+ oz of fluid a day. Fellow Dec. sleevers, how long have your stalls been? Have you been able to kick out of them? I'll work on my patience..
  12. Does anyone have any weight loss books...specifically the big book on gastric sleeve that they no longer need and wish to sell?

    Cpap

You might want to ask your doctor to switch your machine. I have not been banded yet but was recently diagnosed with sleep apnea. My doctor has ordered me the APAP machine, which is an auto adjusting CPAP. It will adjust the pressure according to your needs as you lose or gain weight. Do you have this one?
  14. My surgery is Friday on 12/14...i find myself doing that as well. I try to go on youtube and find sleevers who are the same height as me just a gauge on what certain weights would like on me.

    One year & 90lbs!

I LOVE to go out to eat! At fancier restaurants, I often eat off the appetizer menu and appetizers often have the Protein without all the excess starch fillers like rice, Pasta, potato. I don't need the soup/salad option either. Don't tell my surgeon, but I love to go out for a glass of wine and "dinner" which is often something like bacon wrapped sea scallops or seared tuna. My close friends know I had surgery so they don't question what I eat. Folks who don't know I had surgery will sometimes ask if that's all I'm going to eat. Folks who know I've lost a large amount of weight and comment on how much I eat will usually ask if I've lost the weight by eating so much less. The first six months was quite an adjustment for me and eating out was harder for me to navigate.
  16. So I told myself I wouldn't fail on my weightloss journey with the gastric sleeve but biggest thing that is so discouraging is exercising with asthma. It's such a huge burden on my life and I don't know what to do. I don't feel I'm getting enough cardio in just walking and I can barely run for a minute without reaching for my rescue inhaler. Even lifting weights can trigger an attack. What am I to do?

    Last Minute Doubts

Hello Topgun. I understand exactly how you feel. I started this journey back in 10/2011 only to have my insurance come back and say I had to switch facilities in 12/2011. Now that I have completed all of my pre-op and scheduled for surgery 20 days from today I am freaking out. I thought I was ready for this now I'm not sure. Wondering if I will lose the weight? If I will have any major complications? Will I gain the weight back? How much skin will I have? I just hope I am making the right decision. Not only that but I have lost 15 lbs so far and will prob end up losing another 10lbs before surgery. I'm just thinking to myself how come I can't lose the weight and keep it off without surgery. Anyways...we can hold each others hand on this one. Good luck
  18. It is the weirdest feeling ever! Kind of feels like a snake is being pulled out of you! Mine was so long the nurse pulled on it and stopped because she didn't believe how long it was. I had to tell her just keep going I want to get this over with! Your weight loss is great!! Just think about how your life is going to turn around........That will put a smile on your face!
  19. I lost 22 pounds 2 weeks preop and 17 in 7 weeks post op. It's normal. A "3week stall" is normal. Losing every single day is not normal. Losing 10 pounds/week is not normal. You are doing fine. Just keep getting your fluids and Protein and exercise and you will lose. It took years to put on weight, and you certainly won't lose it all in a few weeks. This is a lifelong process, it won't happen overnight and you shouldn't stress over.

    Loose skin help

My surgeon told me up front that I would probably experience some loose skin but to remember that with a rapid weight loss it's hard not to have that problem. Then he told me if I felt plastic surgery was the only solution for me that I should not pursue such surgery until I'd been at my goal weight for a year because the skin will continue to recover at least some. So I guess patience is a virtue!

    30-40 percent regain

I am not sure about the exact percentage but the reality is you have to be accountable to make the changes for long term success. Your best chance of losing and keeping it off is surgery. There are statics that prove this. Those that gain their weight back, have not fully adapted to the changes required to be successful. That usually comes from not being ready. The reason that most surgeons and insurance company's have a structured monitored diet plan that requires classes, nutritionist appointments and physcologist is so that they are sure you are ready to move forward. Whether it be 3 months, 6 month or 12 month programs that time is necessary to begin making changes and turning them into habits. You have to decide how bad you want it and how hard you are willing to work. The surgery is nothing more than a tool that helps you control the amount of food at any one given time. You have to drive it. You have to ensure you eat the right foods and that you don't graze all day long and eat around your surgery. For me, this was a no brainier, but I was ready.

    2 weeks out complications... ulcers.

Just an update... the Carafate helps me swallow things for about 1 to 2 hours before it wears off. However, today I've started dry heaving and partially regurgitating all liquids except water. I knew ulcers were a risk, but they are rare. I rolled the dice and lost. Had I known, I would not have had this surgery. I really can't describe the pain and nausea. It is unlike anything. And constant, except for when I take the Carafate... but now I can't keep stuff down. I've read these can take months to heal... I hope that isn't the case with mine. Honestly, the weight loss is not worth this. Sent from my SM-G930R4 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Weight and Relationships

It's unlikely that love will come knocking on your front door. Here is how (at the age of 55) I found love after being thrown out (divorced) a second time. I took a year off from the relationship scene to get my head together and to find out who I was when no one else is telling me what to do, think. eat, or like. I had to find the true me to be able to present myself correctly in the search for love. I got on Craig's list, back before it was a pimp site, and put an ad in the personals. I told it plainly who I was and what I am and what my baggage was. I even mentioned that I was heavy. I got 93 responses that I had to filter through. I eliminated those that sounded obviously perverted, those that sent below the belt photos, and those that were just out of high school, and those that seemed uncompatable. I reduced the list to ten and started meeting guys in public places before giving out my address and phone. Sure, I dated a couple of frogs, but gentleman number three came across as dignified and gentle and had many similar interests as I had, and he had been thrown away twice, too. We have been together over eight years and plan on going into our old age together. He is now 64 and I am just around the corner from 63. He never asked me to change anything (not even my weight) and I have never asked him to change anything (not even his smokig). He is very tall and thin. We look like a pencil and and apple when we are together. He has been supportive of my weight loss surgery, and our love has grown stronger. So, I have said all of that to say this.......to find someone who will love you for who you are, you have to be bold enough to put yourself out there - as you are. If you join a dating site, definitely mention that you are on a doctor supervised weight loss journey. You will likely get someone who is on that journey also or is at least open-minded about folks in our predicament. I don't think you have to be at your goal weight before you start dating. Just go for it.

    30-40 percent regain

@@Frenchie1977 30-40 % regain is really vague. Almost all people are going to gain weight as they age, that is just life for the most part, and most WLS patients have some bounce back. If I had a Dr telling me that 30-40% of his patients regain all of their weight, I would look for another Doctor, obviously something is lacking with their program. Surgery isn't a magic tool, people have to work. Many people have surgery and aren't really ready for it, if forums are any representation of patients I would say over 60% of people that have surgery aren't really ready for it or good candidates. I went into surgery knowing the pitfalls. I know someone that had surgery, never got to goal, and regained. The reason why is pretty simple, they never changed their eating habits. They didn't take advantage of the time immediately post-op to learn new eating habits and to cook. They kept living their same lifestyle and just eating small amounts and added new habits like the occasional drink. They worked with a trainer and followed a fad diet, not a way of eating for life. When they got close to goal, they chickened out and decided they were losing too much, and stopped. Just a series of bad decisions. Now they have regained and are almost 300 pounds. This person had bypass not the sleeve. They eat all kinds of sugar and a lot of things I would never eat. Your success after surgery, as long as the surgeon is actually competent and can create a properly formed sleeve, is entirely up to you. A Dr stating 30-40% I would seriously doubt their skills to be honest.

    30-40 percent regain

Here's what the meta-analysis of all the WLS research shows. (BTW, "meta-analysis" is when you combine the data from lots of studies and analyze it as as a single batch of data.) After losing weight with WLS, half of all WLS patients are described as "successful" long-term. These WLS patients (who've had one or more of all the possible WLS procedures -- there are over half a dozen different types) lose some or all of their excess weight post-op and go on to retain from 100% to 50% of the weight they lost. This includes people who lost all their excess weight and maintained it forever to people who didn't gain back more than 50% of the weight they did lose. And the other half of WLS patients are described as "unsuccessful" long-term. These are patients who gained back more than half of the excess weight they lost. This group ranges from those who gained back 50% of the pounds / kilos they lost with WLS to those who regained all the weight they lost -- and even some who weigh more now than they did before having WLS.
