    June 2022 surgery buddies

Be very excited! I wish I had been more excited and less nervous! My surgery was Wednesday 6/8 and I already feel 25 years younger and just fabulous. I had a massive hiatal hernia repaired, gastric bypass, and gall bladder removal. This surgery was the best decision I ever made. shopping: you may be bloated from IV Fluid when you go home. I bought a pair of shoes 1/2 size larger and it’s a good thing that I did. TEGADERM PATCHES: I was able to shower 2 days post op, but you don’t want the Water beating down on the laparoscopic sites. sugar free ICE POPS: I bought about 6 boxes of these because a couple of weeks ago, they were scarce. If I wake in the middle of the night, I’ll have an ice pop. BROTH: low sodium. SMALL HAND HELD STRAINER: so you can strain cream of whatever Soup. YOUR favorite Protein Shake. Mine is premier Peanut Butter chocolate. CRYSTAL LIGHT: pick your favorite flavors. I go through this like crazy. FAIRLIFE SKIM or 1% MILK: my nutritionist told me to buy it to thin shakes, put in soup. She was right. I bought Nespresso pods and K Cups in Decaf because I do miss the taste of coffee. STOOL SOFTENER: I bought Miralax. BLOOD PRESSURE MONITOR: my surgeon wants me to monitor my bp and get in touch with my PCP when it starts to come down. I wore hospital gowns in the hospital but had some nice lounge wear for when I got home. BANDAIDS: I’m on an oral bloodthinner for a month. The tiniest scratch will bleed like you can’t believe. SUGAR FREE JELLO:  so many packs of that. B COMPLEX VITAMINS: tiny capsules…easy to swallow. I’ll let you know if I think of anything else.

    Post Surgery Dreams

All these are so good! Thank you for sharing everyone. I am 1 week post opp. I look forward to 1. No longer needing the seatbelt extender on a plane and fitting comfortably in the seats that have the solid dividers. I am wider at the hips and I would have bruising/pain and numbness for days after (especially when flying internationally). 2. Trying any sport I want! I love being active and I am competitive but to feel the freedom to be adventurous again without significant pain. HUGE 3. CLOTHES in regular stores! periodt! 4. I agree about Roller Coasters as well. I have taken that walk. 5. Not worrying about if I will fit in a chair.

I’m only on clear liquids the day before and 3 days after. Then I’ll gradually go to soft foods. Do you like the premier protein clear?

    Slow weightloss

So I've only lost 10 pounds in 3 months. I'm supper slow at losing but I have bit been eating enough the Dr said. So I'll try to eat more. I am able to. I just thought at 7 months only eat 700 calories. He said 1000. Wow.. With that being Said my loss since Nov has only been 56 pounds. But happy to lose it! Thr oddest thing is my body feels heavier, like it was before I lost weight Sent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app
  5. This may be a silly question and truthfully I'm just impatient. Anyone that has gotten any tattoos pre/post opp, what was your time frame? I'd like to get a small forearm tattoo in memory of my brother that passed a year ago. I haven't gotten my surgery date but I know they will be contacting me this week to set it up in mid-late July. I clearly don't want to risk any hold up on my surgery, but I'm also just trying to get a time frame. Any insight is appreciated. [emoji4] Sent from my SM-G991U using BariatricPal mobile app

    gastric bypass for reflux

YES! I had a RYN for the same reason over 4 years ago. I had zero insurance hoops to go through. My surgeon is the leading lung replacement doc in my state. He told me to get all of my info from the internet!!!! He didn’t have me do any kind of pre-op diet, I did that on my own. I also had to push him to order a colon prep kit to clean me out the day before. I was approved in less then 3 months! What helped me a lot was a nutritionist provided by my insurance company (Cigna). I spoke with her several times before & a whole lot after. I have found this forum & some FB groups very helpful. I also read a couple of book just so I could get info from one source instead of an overload of internet stuff to find my way through. Please feel free to message me if you have any questions.

What's your post-op diet look like? I'm clear liquids for a week, so I have Premier Protein Clear, Bone Broths, Jello, and Popsicles ready to go. My surgeon allows sugar in the first week after surgery due to calories being so low.

Eating carbs (pasta, rice, or bread )

I had mine about 2 weeks ago, about 9 weeks post op. I only ate 2 pieces to try it out but I was so happy and it sat fine! I had it again last night. 4pieces! I just make sure I already hit my protein goal because there isn't much protein in the small amount I can eat.

    Calories per day

Heading into 5 weeks out from surgery and my calories are anywhwere from 480-700 per day. I focus more on getting 70-80 grams of protein per day and meeting my water goals.

    Post Surgery Dreams

I'm one month and a few days out from surgery. 1) Get back to distance running. I used to run half marathons in my early 30's. 2) Go kayaking and fit comfortably in a kayak. 3) Try Stand Up Paddleboarding. There is this place that offers lessons every year where we go to vacation and I've always been too heavy for it 4) Fit comfortably in a restaurant booth 5) Fit on an amusement park rollercoaster and swing ride 6) Fit comfortably in a sporting event seat. I've missed so many football, baseball, and basketball games because I couldnt sit comfortably and it feels like a waste when you have season tickets 7) Cut my psych meds down

    June 21st Peeps

Well I had my pre-op appointment yesterday and everything is a go for next Tuesday. The one question I totally forgot to ask the Dr. was, what will my goal weight be. I could barely sit still since I am so excited. Thinking about drinking shakes for another week and a half is still not that great, lol.

    Thing I miss most

Hi Healthy4longerlife: I'm only two weeks post-op but can really appreciate what you are saying about how challenging it is to manage the relationship with food. I was already in therapy prior to surgery (mostly for anxiety but then to help me wade through my feelings and emotions related to having the bypass surgery as well as my relationship with food). I highly recommend exploring therapy as an option. I have no regrets in working with a therapist. For me, my emotional eating is directly related to my anxiety, so having that avenue to work things out is really helpful and then I don't feel like my family has to bare the brunt of my emotional upheavals. I'm a better mom and wife for it. I did OA off and on for many years, and it can also be a helpful place to land - especially if it works well for you to have a group and/or sponsor to be accountable to on a daily/weekly or more basis. Both options require personal work and delving into what is "poking at you" when it comes to using food for more than just nourishing your body. I suspect I will continue to struggle with this aspect of my relationship with food. Self-awareness is key to working through it, and you seem to have that! I'm rooting for you to find the best option for you. The WLS is just a "tool" - we all still have to work on that "head hunger." Here's hoping that there are better ways to quiet that voice inside that says we must eat in order to feel.
  13. Disclaimer: I skimmed to see if I saw a similar post, and did not - so if this is a repeat, my apologies. I just wanted to create a thread for those of us who haven't yet received the surgery, and even those that are not far out post surgery to list our hopes and goals. I was reading the thread of NSVs and thought, ya know, it might be nice to have a thread where those of us not there yet can dream and hope and plan. Something to look forward to. Something that personally keeps us moving, even as the buyers remorse after surgery threatens to take our motivation and our joy. And this is for anyone, not just a particular surgery, so I didn't pick one when I created the thread. This is not to say we won't have many sweet and unexpected NSV's post surgery - but there are specific reasons we chose this route ... things we wanted back in our lives. Maybe things we've been longing for for YEARS. So let's make those known and focus on those. I'll go first - I have 5 big things I will be looking and waiting for: 1) Sex - for as long as I can remember I have been limited to damn near one position because of my weight. I can not WAIT to be able to experience more flexibility and be able to be more spontaneous for my husband. Poor guy has no spice in his sex life cause his wife is a whale. Sigh. 2) Booths - again, for as long as I can remember, I've had to make sure to ask for a table or ask if the tables in the booths are mobile before being seated at a restaurant. It's embarrassing. 3) Pain - Being able to stand for longer periods of time. Not have to go up or down stairs in a shuffle, having to place both feet on each stair before going further. Less back pain. 4) Medications - I want to come off my blood pressure medications. I'm on the lowest dose, twice a day. So I am hoping that shortly after surgery it will happen. That will make me feel so much better about myself and everything in general. 5) Clothes Shopping - I can't wait to get to go in any retail store and be able to find something to fit me, instead of scouring online trying to find things that fit 6x people. My wardrobe is pathetic because it is difficult to find things that large and when you do, it's usually made with such poor quality it doesn't last very long.

    Second Month Stall?

Yes its very common. I personally had a 5 week stall at 2 months out but I was not getting in enough protein or water for my daily diet. My dietician said it was like a flight of stairs - plateau's and down wards, over and over. You will get very use to it on your journey. Good luck with a drop soon

    Second Month Stall?

10000000% common and normal. Weight will fluctuate, stall, plateau, and do all sorts of other things. I'm 9 months out and it has NOT been linear. The most important thing to do is just stay the course and follow your plan. You don't need to exercise 5 hours a day, do a pouch reset, bulk up on laxatives, or any of that crap. You just need time and consistency. Hang in there, I know its frustrating but you're right where you should be!

    Second Month Stall?

So this kicks off month two post sleeve surgery and my weight loss has slowed down some. I had the three week stall; had a little movement last week and then nothing again. I havent changed much; the only thing I've added is veggies (zucchini, tomato, and mushrooms have been added back). PRotein is still the same, exercise is still the same or higher since now I can swim. I'm sure hormones are just f'ing with me, but is this common?
  17. I have lost 100% off my excess weight, as I now sit at a “healthy” BIM. My loss just stopped when I hit 168. I thought, ok fine, maybe this is ever I was meant to land. 3 months later…the scale has started going down again. I didn’t really change what I’m doing food wise, just started walking more as the weather has improved. So a year out, things can still go down 😊

    I can't eat.

What about soups? I am in week 5 post-op and STILL resort to soups when I am not "feeling" other foods I'm allowed. A hot soup just seems to go down easier. If you can pack it with protein, even better! Beats a shake (at least for me)

    Food Before and After Photos

My biggest tips- Make a plan and start small- Having a general idea of the meals you want to make for the week and going from there makes things easier. If planning a whole week seems impossible (for me it is) then break it down by 2-3 days or even daily. Know yourself- I know that I personally am not a fan of leftovers but I don’t mind makeovers- roasted vegetables one night might not be appealing the next day, but soup? Boy, howdy I’m all aboard that train! If you don’t mind eating the same thing for several meals then plan that way. If you ride the leftover-hating struggle bus then simple preparation one day might yield a more complex dish the next by reinventing those same foods. Meal prep takes time- A lot of it can be hands off- pickling vegetables, roasting things, marinating meats, soaking beans, etc. Just make sure you allot for that time when planning your meals. That being said, yes it’s cheaper and more convenient to buy canned beans or granola but by making/prepping it yourself you get to control the nutritional value. You are worth the effort/time it takes to make healthy, nutritious meals for yourself. Above all- be patient and kind with yourself. Rome wasn’t built in a day. New habits/skills take time to learn and master.
  20. Thank you so much for the tips. I had no idea about pickles since the jar said 0 calories. But I've only been eating 3 or 4 pickle spears a day. I will cut that out. There are soups offered on the bariatric advantage website that they had me get my shakes from. Do I have to look at the labeling or are they all similar to shakes? 9 days post-op

At your surgery date weight, those are high expectations. Certainly puts the pressure on you particularly given a lot of people experience a stall 3 or 4 weeks post op.. You are doing great as you are and don't let your doctor tell you otherwise.

    I'm sad VERY SAD!

I promise it will get better. I’m 3 . 5 years post op and I eat pretty much whatever I want , just much smaller amounts . I do watch my sugar and carbs intake , I do eat them but only tiny amounts . I still enjoy going out to eat with my husband and I still love cooking . Thankfully I have maintained a steady 105 pound weight loss. Good luck and keep your chin up . You will come out of this phase soon , honestly. Try to find a new hobby as soon as you’re up to it . I discovered spin class 4 times a week and it helps me so much with my mental attitude , and allows the indulgences once in a while
  23. I think it would be a safety precaution too - putting you in a better & healthier place for your surgery. My surgeon puts his patients on different diets based upon their weight, eating habits, weight loss & medical history. Some are on all shakes or 2 shakes & a meal (under the hospital’s weight loss clinic) or keto with a dietician which I was on. I did the 2 shakes & a meal for a good 3 months some years ago. My meal was at night. It is hard to begin because you’re breaking a lot of habits & addictions (salt, sugar, caffeine, etc.). The first week is usually the hardest but you will lose weight. You got this. Watch the pickles especially the number you eat. Those extra calories quickly add up. If you feel hungry, try a green or herbal tea. Also see if they have soups as well as shakes. (The hospital weight loss clinic program offered soup & shakes mixes as did the pharmacy brand program I followed.) Drinking soups can seem more meal like & can be more satisfying.

    Food Before and After Photos

Day 3- I was really missing veggies by lunch time. Breakfast- oatmeal with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and whole milk yogurt. Lunch- tuna, cucumber, tomato, and whole milk yogurt mixed with garlic powder and dill. Snack- roasted chick peas. Dinner- a zucchini bake with chicken thigh, homemade tomato sauce (Roma tomatoes, garlic, onions, and oil) with chicken thigh and mozzarella cheese. After dinner snack- a piece of roasted chicken skin
  25. Hello, I’m new to this site and also am on Day 3 of Liquid Diet. My surgeon limited me to 2.5 protein shakes per day and only water, crystal light, decaf tea, or any broth in between. So yes, I’m feeling miserable and so hungry I am even craving food I wasn’t too fond of before. I am having the gastric bypass surgery on June 27th. Thanks in advance for any support.
