  1. Do you see a psychiatrist for your antidepressant medication? Finding the right medication is a trial and error process. Since you are still depressed (sad), the one you are on may not be the best one for you, especially if it is interfering with your desired weight loss. Psychiatrists know far more about psychotropic medication than general practitioners. Here is the food plan that I have been on pre-surgery. I'm just three days away from my scheduled revision surgery. When I can eat regular food again I intend to go back on it. It's been very successful for me. Part of the success has been my recognition of trigger foods. I have cut out all sugar, flour, rice, potatoes, and processed foods and have lost 67 lbs to date. If I indulge in these things, I have to go through withdrawal all over again. Then, if I avoid my trigger foods, I do not have cravings. A Pound of Cure by Matthew Weiner, MD, a bariatric surgeon. He's written two other books, has a website and YouTube videos.
  2. Unfortunately, this is the way a lot of medical systems deal with obese people, and it's heavily internalized in the obese themselves. Just browse around these pages for a bit. Based on what we know about the causes for a high weight set point, childhood trauma is always #1 on the list. It's not very surprising a stressed body does what it can to survive, including driving you to stock up for worse times. Unfortunately, we don't lack access to calories at almost any stage in our lives, so this mechanism will lead to obesity. You probably never had a chance. This surgery could be that one chance to correct something that is not your fault in the least bit. Then why are you being met with this kind of punishing attitude? Ignorance. Really, that's it. There's still a lot of people who see obesity as some sort of moral defect. Those people should pipe down real fast, trust me the future won't be kind to them (think blackface). Take pity in them, step back and look at getting to the surgery as merely a way to further your healing. That's a healing that cannot come from surgery, as you know. It'll come from therapy while you get another chance at a body that isn't clinging on to every calorie for dear life. Oh, and beware: for every malabsorptive surgery patient here, there's 15 sleevers who think we all have the same surgery.

    Still haven’t lost weight

I've read through all your posts and the comments. From everything you've said, I get the feeling you're just trolling on here and judging those who have had the surgery. You repeatedly say "just diet and exercise, then you'll lose weight" and "why can't you do all this without the surgery." But then say you can't lose weight? Something doesn't add up. Maybe I'm wrong. I hope so. In any case, if you're not just being a judgmental troll, you need to eat more. At 800 calories your body is in starvation mode. No one should be eating 800 calories at 5 months out. Good luck to you.

Never thought I would see this number. 195 is the top number for “healthy bmi” so I am almost there. That was my goal…. But I think I can go lower than 195 because I still have pockets of body fat to loose. I hit this number 9 months post surgery. Highest weight: 330 pounds surgery weight: 297 pounds Goal weight: adjusted… was 195 but maybe 180? i don’t know. We will see. height reference: I’m six feet two inches tall. So super tall for a woman. 😅 I have not been this weight since junior high school. (7th/8th grade)

    This surgery is bullshit...

You might need more than 800 calories. I was supposed to get a minimum of 1200 as soon as possible after surgery. I've found that hard to get to sometimes and when I can't get there my weight loss stalls. It's entirely possible you are eating too little and that is sabotaging your efforts.

    This surgery is bullshit...

Now that you are logging your intake, can you post a sample of what you eat in a day? Between all of the folks here, there are decades of experience with post-bariatric weight loss. Maybe someone will be able to spot something that could be derailing your progress.

    This surgery is bullshit...

How frustrating and disheartened you must feel. I ask this with all respect, what are you doing differently to cope with the triggers that make you want to eat? I’m just now realizing that I’m a bona fide addict, and that I have a very distorted relationship with food. Somehow it became my friend instead of fuel for my body. Although I am still losing weight at this point, I know I won’t be able to keep it off if I don’t resolve that. To answer your question “a tool for what” - for me it’s a tool to physically restrict my intake while I do the mental work. Please don’t give up.
  8. Yes, I would do it again. My husband was not in favor (although he supported what I decided). A family member who is a doctor cautioned me that some of his patients had gained back all the weight. However, three of my doctors at teaching hospitals recommended it, and showed me the research. It’s been such a blessing, as finally I am able to lose so much excess weight (I thought I would go to my grave obese). And I feel that as long as I follow the eating guidelines, it will stay off. This is my answer, even though from what I gather, I had a much harder recovery than most people on this forum. I vomited multiple times a day for two months before it stopped. I did have regrets at first, but my surgeon said it would stop. Once the nausea subsided, it has been sunny skies.

    This surgery is bullshit...

Well I’ve been logging my meals since I originally posted this and following the doctors advice to the T and I still haven't lost a single pound. Every visit he acts like he doesn’t believe me when I say I’m staying at 800 calories a day. So I’ve been told a million times by my doctor and people on this forum that the surgery is just a tool. I get that. But a tool for what? How do you use the tool? I don’t ever feel full, I’m always hungry, I’m not losing weight…. What a useless tool.
  10. Had this stupid surgery 5 months ago and I’m still not losing any weight. I’ve been logging my meals and sticking to 800 calories a day like the doctor told me to. And every time I see him he repeats the same thing (It’s obvious he doesn’t believe I’m keeping my calories on target) and he schedules another appointment. Every time I weight exactly the same. I still don’t understand what the surgery is supposed to do for me if I’m required to stick to a low calorie diet long term. Yeah, yeah… “the surgery is just a tool”…. A tool for what? What benefit is the surgery providing? None as far as I can tell.
  11. On week 5 of liquid diet - thank goodness surgery is the 22nd because I am having such a hard time the past week sticking to this liquid diet and I have cheated a few times. I am starving still - have been the entire 5 weeks. My stomach is constantly growling and everyone in my family can hear it all day and all night. I am so excited to get this done and not feeling the hunger pains anymore lol I can’t wait to see us all start loosing the weight and being healthy!

ShoppGirl that's the one I was originally looking at before deciding on the used one. The weight limit is part of the reason why I also didn't buy it originally. At the time I was looking at it I exceeded the limit by like 50lbs!
  15. Wow, you are being really hard on yourself! Don't forget that a year sober is a big deal. It looks like you had to put weight loss on the back burner to focus on your sobriety, and that does not make you a failure. You are taking active steps to getting back on track, and that's great. If you don't give up, there's always hope.

I found one on Amazon that is designed to be used under a desk. The arms fold down and it can be slid under a bed if necessary. Which is nice in my tiny house. It’s not super easy so I just do it when I am wanting the house to be really neat. I only spent about $300. It’s a little more now. I have had it for a few years now and it serves the purpose. The two downsides are the weight limit which I think was 250 and the fact that you can’t do inclines but these were not deal breakers for me. 17. Congratulations on your sobriety! Like youre winning your fight with that youll win with weight, one step at a time. I would avoid tablets if you can for weight loss.

    Just a journey

eh woke up this morning thinking i would SEE and taste below 180lbs, my scale just gave weird readings, started by slowing 5lbs instead of zero, and then just weighed me at everything from 179.4 to 184.6 LOL FML i looked and looked for new batteries but i dont think thats what the issue is. Ill report back tomorrow weight wise if i can find new batteries. I brought cupcakes and these ppl canceled my order so i think the weight loss god are looking out for me. I had around 1050 calories today, tracked on my fitness pal. im not running this evening, i dont fancy it and thats that. Ill go for a nice long run in the morning if its not raining in england, by long i mean hopefully more than 4miles, no more than 6, in my mind really 4.3ishhhhh I am also going to run some errands with my friend tomorrow, we might do lunch, and i look forward to it.
  19. THIS! one thousand percent. There are antidepressants that DON'T cause weight gain, but some doctors don't know/care enough about side effects to off those to patients struggling with their weight. If you don't think the prescriber is thinking of this, try talking to your surgeon to see if she thinks this could be an issue. There are so many meds that you could be taking that could be adding to weight gain (but... even the cravings to eat caused by the weight gain can be minimized). Also, there are medications you can take to reduce hunger, like metformin and phentermine, along with newer drugs like Ozempic
  20. First, congrats on your prior weight loss and sobriety!! Since altering your diet have you been tracking your food again? If not you may want to try that and go back to basics. Back to the way we're told to eat once we hit that "regular food" stage. Not sure what you were told but for me that means 800 cals a day, 50 grams or less of total carbs, 60-75 grams of protein, 64 oz of water and the carbs you do eat should be from things like fruits/veggies/whole grains. You don't know how many times I thought I was doing everything right until I actually started counting/using the food tracker app again. Since Oct 25th I've been in a stall. Thought I had my crap together and doing things right until I sent my nutritionist my food logs to ask for help and suggestions and she pointed out what I was doing wrong and where I was inconstant. So I made the corrections and things are already improving and it's only been a week. Anyway, I too suggest the therapist but maybe also the nutritionist to help you get on track again. She or he would have the best suggestion on how to help you get going again. Best of luck!!!

    Weirdest None-Scale-Victory - I'll go first

Weirdest NSV of the week: went back for a follow up with my PCP for something I went in for two weeks before surgery, and after the nurse entered in my weight she got an error because the drop was so large so quickly that she needed a supervisor to come make sure the numbers weren't added incorrectly, and flag my file. Once I caught on to why she was so confused and concerned, I explained about surgery and everyone was VERY relieved.
  22. Thanks. I haven't heard from my doctor at all. One thing I do want to mention as an FYI, or in case anyone is interested is that my psych asked me a question. She asked if I'd be happy staying the same weight that I am, or losing 10-20 pounds since my eating patterns have shifted a little. But generally, can I be happy at this weight. Because I think we both know that, barring some miracle, I'm likely to not lose the amount of weight I would if I had the procedure. I'd have to research the meds that were mentioned earlier (that's not really a road I've traveled as of yet). So I'm still thinking about that. Honestly, NO. I'm a big girl. I don't mind being big, to some extent, but I'm uncomfortable in my skin with how I am now. Eight years ago I was able to lose a nice chunk of weight, but I can't say that's possible right now for me. Age, stress, hormones - you name it, are really working against me. But, being also not sure about the surgery, I'm in a limbo of sorts, which is almost more depressing and frustrating. It was advised that I touch base back with the bariatric program in a month or so, or after the holidays to kind of gauge where things are. But honestly I don't even know what they would want me to do at this point (start over in the program, etc.) and it sound exhausting to me to do that.
  23. I’m 13 months out and would do it again in a heartbeat. I’m down 172 lbs and less than half the woman I once was. It is a lot of hard work still, so don’t just assume you’ll get the surgery and the weight will fall off without you having to do anything. But if you’re willing to put in the effort it can be life changing.
  24. Some people are just slow losers. But everybody and every body is bound by the CICO (calories in calories out) equation. If you are eating in a caloric deficit, which literally every post-op bariatric patient (regardless of surgery) is, you are going to lose weight. It just may not be leaps and bounds. And for those who lost a ton of weight quickly, a lot of that is water weight and many of us stalled after our body recalculated its hydration needs, whereas many slow losers lose steadily. It. Will. Come. Off.

    Treadmill recommendations

I did spend a few thousand dollars on a treadmill. It's very steady and that's really important to me. Also, they delivered it and set it up for me. I am not mechanically inclined. 1. You get what you pay for, although I wouldn't get a peloton because then you're just getting a name that's trendy (although my friend loves her peloton bike because she enjoys the classes) 2. Make sure the treadmill has at least a 50lb cushion between your highest (or current) weight and the weight limit of the treadmill. 3. Make sure you get a pad for underneath if you plan to put it above another room or you live in an apartment. It will help lower the sound, especially when you are heavier and also if you are jogging/running 4. Put it in front of a TV if possible if you find exercise like the treadmill dull, because otherwise you're likely to just stop out of boredom
