    Vitamins

My bariatric surgery program teaches that solid, chewable, or liquid vitamins are all fine, but that patients should not use vitamin gummies. I don't know the reasoning, but that was mentioned in the online recorded class I attended yesterday.

    Worried about surgery

Mary Maxwell-Dowling, what a neat classy mouthful that is! I'm 72, a future RnY- er. HW355 CW323 BMI 47, strawberry blonde hair, hazel green eyes, once upon a time I was a cutie-pie, now I'm just a Big Mama. But I plan to be a little slimmer and trimmer, my GW is 170 to 175, will I make it? Well I'm gonna try.---Hey there are over 50 and over 60 postings on Bariatric Pal, look one or two of them up and join in. I too look forward to fishing, gardening, walking and maybe a little bicycling, all the things my 2 bionic knees and weight haven't let,me do. We're the Baby Boomers, we still Have our fire, drive and spunk, elsewise we wouldn't have survived to this point. I live in Central Ohio, within a 60 mile radius my entire life, an only child, widowed almost 6 years and have one son left who lives with me. I am so lucky he wants to be with me as much as I want him here. I also have 1 daughter who lives maybe 7/8th of a mile from me. I call her R.D. short for Rotten Daughter, I see her when and if she wants to see me. We all have a relative like that, it was my misfortune to give birth to mine. Ah, I will not let the thought of her drag me down! Through her I have 2 grandaughters, Amy the younger one is a Sophomore at Ohio State studying Forensic PreMedicine. Naomi the older one was married for nearly 2 years, came home with her tail between her legs& in the midst of a divorce. I assume it will be final when one of them gets sufficent money or finds someone else as an incentive. I'm not supposed to ask too much( per RD,) it only depressed poor Naomi to talk about it. What does she think, Naomi doesn't know it? Oh Whatever! I just praise God there are no great grandbabies stuck in this mess! Sure I'd love g.g.b. but not in this unstable situation. Write back if you' d like, I'm on here a lot. And I will get my surgery, some days I'd like to put legs on my prayers but I trust our God knows best. Remember Greater is He that is within us than what is in the World. I cling to the hope of a future, both here and in Heaven someday! Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

    Any March 2018 Sleevers?

Post surgery constipation. Has this been a problem for you guys? At my pre-anesthesia appt, nurse suggested I start taking Senokot now, a week before surgery. I also know of one local bariatric practice that does the same thing. Anyone doing something similar?

We were told if there is any hope of insurance paying for excess skin removal you have to document document document, as already suggested a note from your bariatric surgeon saying you need it for health reasons, a note from your PCP outlining any health issues such as rashes and infections as a result of the excess skin are all going to help your cause. Make sure that any irregularity with your excess skin is noted within your medical file, not just notes written by yourself. Then hope and pray, as frust8 said their job is to find out reasons they shouldn't have to pay for this. Your job is to convince the insurance company that it is more profitable for them to pay this small amount of money now rather than paying for years of minor medical procedures, Dr visits and medications, much the same way you needed to with the bariatric surgery in the first place.

Band to sleeve success stories, please.

@the maestroswife, one reason could be you're older when you're seeking revision. I am still a WLS virgin, still planning surgery#1, a RnY, I know that makes me a minority in this forum, but another reason I weighed in is --there are many posters on Bariatric Pal who say their Hashimoto's subsided or went into to total remission after the sleeve. Watch your portion size, get your fluids in and watch out for sneaky slider foods and you'll be a good weight loss story. You will probably lose as much as you want to, if not you'll still be at a healhier point. Keep the faith Ladies, good things are ahead! Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

same thing for Canada really, the bariatric surgeon might say you need some skin removal for your health but that's really the minimal work to remove the flab because it might get infected and what not

Remember BCBS are insurance people, they plan to economize and keep that budget low. And they are never keen to pay out. Do you have a statement from your Bariatric Surgeon, telling them your health will be adversely affected if you don't have plastic surgery? If you don't have that as a starting point you might as well go outside and howl at the moon because that greyhound ain't going to run! Praying that things will go your way, BCBS is just praying you just go away. And that's the way that mop flops! Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

    Any March 2018 Sleevers?

BrandiLynn I'm in Ohio but I too suffer from allergies. In a few months I'll join you in miserable-land, right now I have been battling sinusitis so i definitely sympathize. Go blow your nose, try to put on a pretty smile and know we love you here on Bariatric Pal. And for gosh sakes get some Zyrtec or Clairitin. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

How long does it take for Georgia Medicaid to approve you for surgery 4months or 6months...
  13. 2 suggestions for you. 1st check with your bariatric center or surgeon's office, in some locales they have or know of something like a Bariatric Clothes-closet that you can donate outgrown things to or switch for comparable. Like I took in 3 dresses and 4 pants size 26, I could trade for an equal amount in say 20, 22, or 24. Suggestion#2: You say, you're a music or concert junkie? Check Volunteers of America, Salvation Army or Goodwill stores for something like Def Leopard, Lynard Skinner, Rolling Stones(God I'm Showing My Age!) t shirt in an X large or even an large, hang it on your wall where you can get inspired, especially when you're on a liquid diet. If you can see it, you'll start to believe it. It can and will come true. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app
  14. I have gone through some of my clothing and i;ve already gotten a big bag of stuff to give away. Mostly stuff I won't wear or jeans that don't fit anymore. I'd love to give them to someone who is doing bariatric surgery and needs just a few things or so to tide em over while they lose weight. Does anyone know of a place like that? Also.... What is your clothing goal? that one thing you want to wear or size that'll be the ah ha moment? For me, being a music junky, I can't wait to wear band t-shirts. I've only been to one concert(Green Day) but most bands I like don't seem to have plus size shirts. My goal is a xl t-shirt. I need to buy one. I know i'll cry like a baby when I reach that goal. lol
  15. Nothing much will be apparent in three days except whether you can sip liquids. I had a swallow test 24 hours after surgery as a check for leaks. Strictures most likely would not be apparent yet unless extreme. Do a lot of reading on this forum and other online bariatric education sites. Good luck.

    Concerned about support...

GGLFH. I am so happy I finally got to see you and part of your extended family. Give my love to Andrea, that's my daughter's name also, she is lucky to have you and I already know you feel the same about her. You make a nice couple and your nephew and niece are just adorable. Please have your surgery, you need to live for Andrea but most of all, for yourself. I'll be praying, for you, yeah i know you didn't ask me to, but I pray for everyone I meet on Bariatric Pal, so why would I leave you out? You have your struggles, well guess what? So do I, age doesn't give me a free pass. I still screw up, I've just had a few more years to do it in. Kid you are okay and b you're gonna do okay. Don't let all the demons drag you down, you've got the love of a good person there. As another LGBT poster from Singapore reminded me-- the very best thing ever to be learned--Is to love and to be loved in return. Take that to heart, Kid, you are a good and. worthwhile person. Never ever doubt that or yourself. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

  19. Why not? Long story short, I was 55 at time of surgery. My kids were 17 and 13 at the time. I had surgery August 2016 - just before the start of my older daughter's senior year of high school. They saw me have to stop and meet them later during college tours because I couldn't walk the whole campus. They knew how miserable I was. What was wrong with telling them - I've tried everything. Nothing has worked. This is my last hope of not dropping dead before either of you graduate college. And I sat them down (after I had told my hubby and we decided the best way to do this) and said this is what I have decided is right for me. (Both my girls are overweight.) I told them the nature of the surgery and answered questions. My younger daughter was angry and lashed out at me - it was fear because with any surgery there is a risk of death and I was up front about that. But that passed. As of this moment, I'm in better shape than both my girls physically. I wear the clothes they outgrow. I can workout harder and longer. And I'm setting a damn fine example of how you can turn your life around if you are motivated to do so and how you can take control of your health. The only people who knew of my surgery were my husband, my two girls and my two best friends. My mother and my sister don't know and never will. As to everyone else, I tell them I eat a very high protein diet, I restrict sugars and carbs, I exercise like a maniac and record every bite I eat. All of that is true. Don't lie to your kids. They will find out. They will likely resent the fact that you didn't think you could either trust them to keep the secret or handle that you were having surgery. They are grown people - they understand and believe me - they know your limitations due to your weight. If you are really concerned, consult with a social worker or family counselor who works with bariatric patients. Your group should be able to refer you to someone.

    When does the hunger return?

Everyone's restriction is different. I am almost 7 weeks post op. I remember when I took my bariatric class the nutritionist told us that everyone's pouch size would be different. Some would be 4 ounces, some would be 8 ounces. Plus as the swelling goes down, you will be able to eat more. Also it HIGHLY depends on what you are eating. Yogurt is very filling for me.

Advice you wish knew before surgery

Basically everything @Creekimp13 said. The stalls are daunting! I lost 27 lbs in the pre op diet, then lost another 12lbs in the first week, and stalled for almost 2 full weeks. I was only 2 weeks post op at this point. I was terrified. I thought I'd gone through all of this for 39 lbs. But then, after having patience with my body, I started increasing my calories and working out. I've broken the first of many stalls! I didn't have a hard time with drinking after about week one, meaning I could gulp by this point. I just had a hard time reminding myself to drink. Prior to surgery, it didn't matter. No one really thinks about how much liquid they are taking in throughout the day until they have bariatric surgery. Go figure. LOL The fatigue is relentless. I mean, relentless. I remember going to the grocery store 2 weeks out and having to stop in the middle of the store and LEAVE MY CART. I just gave up. I couldn't go any further. The biggest thing for me that I wish I knew was how much pain I was going to be in after surgery. I really struggled for the first 3 days. I was in the hospital for 5 days due to my bowls taking that long to wake up and pass gas. Now, this is probably why I had extended stay and pain. Also, I had a drain left in for 3 days as well, which was painful.
  22. Hi there. I can’t really give you advice about having a bypass, I really wish I could. However, in all my endless hours of research about all types of WLS I do know that the bypass is considered the “gold standard” in weight loss. This means that you will see excellent results almost guaranteed. In addition if your surgeon advised it as your best choice you can get it covered by insurance and he/ she being a professional knows what’s best for you. There are so many I’ve read about who have had the lap band or even the gastric sleeve and have written that they wish they had done the bypass instead because of the steady and considerable weight loss. You will be fine my dear as you should trust what your doctor recommends for you. Keep in mind that we who have had the ESG still struggle with hunger. Our stomachs were not removed like the gastric sleeve and the gherlin hormone is still there nagging at us all day. We also struggle with stalls that can last for weeks and can really impact you on a mental level. I am happy with my ESG but it does take a lot of work on my part. I am not saying you will have it easy but a bypass is what most bariatric surgeons know is a proven and effective procedure for long term weight loss. It has been done for many, many years and there is a ton of data on it. I wish you the absolute best of luck on whatever you choose. Please know that we are always here to listen to you regardless of the procedure you choose. Please keep us posted. With love and support.
  23. Well I've heard the difference is they do the plication with sutures and the ESG with some sort of rivets. I base this on Dr Tom Umbach from Blossom Bariatrics on You Tube. He said it is almost impossible to revise an ESG for this reason. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. Hey @ GerryBhoy, Rosie Queen of. Scots is still active on Bariatric Pal so you have a countrywoman lurking around here somewhere. Scotland Forever! I have Dunn from Dundee in my family tree and Mary Scott, my paternal great-grandmother was born in Edinburgh. I suspect that's where my red hair comes from. 25. And you have your head in just the right place. I'm the Bariatric Grandma on here, at least the oldest currently, had a rocky weight loss path that still isn't over, but I'm a tough ole hen, I'm in it to win it -late as I am to the party. I am 72, will be 73 December 26th, BMI of 47, 323 lbs of stubborn chicken fat on a 5ft8in frame, strawberry blonde hair, hazel green eyes and a cantankerous disposition at times. I believe the adage: Fool me once, shame on YOU Fool me twice shame on ME. Well I was fooled once by a Bariatric program at what I thought was a reputable hospital, screwed over my emotions, I'm enrolling in another program this week, and by all that is holy, I WILL get my RnY surgery this time. As Reba Mc Entire says I AM A SURVIVOR. My late mamma, may she rest in peace, used to say "God gave you 2 ears and 1 mouth. This is so you will listen twice as often as you talk!" Well, I didn't take it fully to heart [emoji307] I can talk for hours on most any subject. If you have any bariatric questions, just ask. If I don't have an answer somebody else on Bariatric Pal will. Welcome again, we hope you'll hang with us for a good long time. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app
