Do Banders Ever Have A Glass Of Wine Or A Cocktail?

I have to agree with honk...but maybe because I'm also not a drinker, and I'm still pre-op and completely focused on the vision of giving my body only what it needs. It seems like the most successful bandsters focus on protien, veges, then fruit, and staying hydrated with water. The surgeon that spoke at our seminar also highly discouraged alcohol just because replacing a food addiction with another substance is entirely too easy. But again, I'm not a drinker, and I'm pre-op -

Admittedly I am not a drinker. Sure you can have alcohol but it really is just calorie water. If someone told you they were working really hard to loose weight but then said they had snicker bar several days a week; you might roll your eyes. -

my dr said ok to an occasional drink. i dont like beer, wine, or hard alcohol except for strawberry margaritas.mmmmmmmmmmmmm....... any hoo, keep this story in mind, i only have 1 -2 margaritas a month (or less) but i found out the hard way that the type of tequila can make a huge difference, really good Jose Cuervo tequila=no problems, cheap tequila at a mexican resturant=major reaction !(i threw up every thing!) Before being banded i had no problems with the cheap kind. Good luck ! -

You can have a glass of wine, or a cocktail, but remember that these are empty calories. Also, you will get DRUNK! alot faster, I found that one out at a wedding, Yikes! Also, if you have even one drink, your inhibitions are lowered and you will eat things you know you shouldn't. Also another thing I learned the hard way, to much to drink and I eat high calorie slider foods, not good if you are trying to lose weight. So, the moral of the story, watch what you eat and drink! Keep the alcohol to a minimum and be careful, alcohol will effect you so much differently now! -

My surgeon says no alcohol for 1 year after surgery and no carbonate beverages at all. There are several issues with alcohol from what I understand: Empty calories. Alcohol can cause ulcers Addiction - If someone is a food adict they can transfer addiction to alcohol. I think it really becomes a judgement call for each person but those are the risks as I know them. -
My surgeon just told me to be careful of the carbonation in beer and he was right. A can or bottle of beer is almost miserable to drink! Besides that, I've had zero issues with alcohol and it hasn't affected my weight loss any, so that's good too.

It been a year so far and i had that moment in the first few weeks of what did I do when you realize all the things you have to keep up with and can't eat. I am really glad I had the surgery. I went from a 24 to a 10 and have lost 105lbs. My only regret is while losing I almost lost myself and became a lil vain. Honestly this has disrupted my life and I became someone I was not and did somethings i would never do. Now im paying for them. I'm not gonna get into the details but your eating habbits and addictions can transfer into alcohol or attention like they did for me. Message me if you want more details but I still wouldn't have changed my decision for surgery. I thought I did all my homework but forgot to look at the emotional after effects of the surgery. Good luck. -
I don't know that it really matters, so long as you take into account that alcohol metabolizes as sugar and is wasted calories. I think most surgeons say to avoid it because you're trying to lose weight and drinking too much alcohol can inhibit your loss. And yes, I do get drunk WAY faster than before. I mean, I don't even need to finish an entire drink! So be careful with that. And my tastes changed completely. I used to love beer and can't stand it now. ~Cheri

Drugs And Alcohol Post Op?!
Skinnyminded replied to Skinnyminded's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Well there is a huge history so thats why im concerned ... I don't and didn't drink alcohol anyway. It was prescription. But I guess these days you can have transferred addictions to anything! Just because you take the food away (substance) doesn't mean your problems are solved! it allll centers in the mind!!! Thanks for the feedback guys -
My surgeon said I could drink whenever I wanted to post op, but to be VERY CAREFUL. Alcohol is absorbed by the stomach into the bloodstream and being sleeved means we can get drunk very quickly. I sipped a couple of wine spritzers at a party four weeks out and just one week out I drank two half-glasses of sav blanc with no ill effects. Your surgeon will recommend what he thinks is apt.

My first alcohol was a little over two months post-op. I tried a margarita (tequila). A few days later I also tried a mojito (rum). I had no trouble with either of them. BUT, there are alot of empty calories in those AND I can't really drink enough fast enough for it to have any effect. So, I've pretty much decided that I won't be drinking any more. I don't need the temptation to stretch my sleeve or the empty calories. Good luck!!

How long before you can have alcohol and what has everyone found the most tolerable?
-
You know, I don't think my doctor mentioned a time period when I could have alcohol. He just said start off small and try doing it at home first because the way your body will react to it will be different than pre-op. I'm not a big drinker so this isn't an issue for me. However, this time of year for me is very stressful (end of semester grading) and it's usually the time when I do pull out the vodka. I'm a bit hesitant as my stomach is having a few issues with certain foods and I'm not sure if I really want to test it just yet. LOL

My NUT was very adamant about no alcohol for a year. So I asked the doc and the reason is that it will slow down weight loss. I have had a small glass of wine and one rum and diet coke with no problems.

Drugs And Alcohol Post Op?!
DLCoggin replied to Skinnyminded's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I don't know anyone that has had the problem but I have read about it. Like kmiller said, transfer from one addiction (food) to another is the most commonly cited cause. Realistically, I don't think you should even think about alcohol until you're at least six months post-op. If there's no history of alcohol abuse (with yourself or your family), I really don't think you have a lot to worry about. Other types of drugs could be a whole different story and I know nothing about that. -
Banded 1/30/2012 Im Up Too 5Cc In My Band

I haven't felt any restrictions. Occasionally when I do ab exercises I feel pain where the port is...my doctor told me to just cut back on how many I do but it's ok to continue exercising. I have no problems consuming and foods and now, alcohol goes straight to my head :-) -
When I went out to a social gathering before I could drink, I would have water with a shot of cranberry juice in it. This made it look like a mixed drink, and it wasn't obvious that I wasn't drinking alcohol. I also had a glass of tomato juice but that might be a bit too harsh still if you are only 3 weeks out.

I just turned 21 in February and was banded on January 10, 2011. I personally have not been able to drink beer -- it's too heavy and carbonated. I stick with either wine or vodka whenever I have an occasional drink. If you're just starting your weight loss journey I would be careful since there is a load of sugar in alcohol and mixed drinks. Your body is going through a lot of changes physiologically and you basically need to learn how to live life all over again. I wish you the best of luck !

I think if you're seeing 8-plus grams of sugar and "no sugar added", you're probably looking at fruit juice popsicles. The regular no-sugar popsicles generally have like 2 grams of sugars or less (from sugar alcohols) and contain no fruit or fruit juice whatsoever. I don't know if fruit juice (especially the more acidic juices) would could as "clear" on the clear diet portion of our diets after surgery, so I plan to buy the non-fruit juice types.

Definatly stay away from carbinated beverages I have learned though after a few months you will become a light weight at drinking so know your limits. Every now and then I'll have a wisky and flat dr. Pepper and that will give me the desired affect of drinking. But, something else to keep in mind is that your body converts alcohol into suger, so definatly count it as an ordinary soda. Best of luck and have fun on your birthday.

Thanks for posting that website. I always joke that I like to eat my calories, not drink them. My surgeon's rules were no alcohol for 1 year post-op (he also admitted that it was the most commonly broken rule.) I did it though, and made it through the first year and no alcohol. For everyone who is struggling, get back to basics, detox from the sugar, carbs and alcohol, and get back on track. Use your tool, don't waste this gift you've been given!

Happy Hour at Sonic with my kids!! Who says you need alcohol to have a HAPPY HOUR?! I just need my kids, a grape slushie, and a 99cent corn dog.... then my hour is pretty darn HAPPY! :-)

My surgery is scheduled for the Tuesday after Labor Day, yikes! I will NOT be drinking alcohol that weekend, but it will be hard since I have a two graduation parties to attend. I tell myself, I can get through it, it's only temporary. Life will get more back to normal down the road post-op. I hope, anyway. Good luck on Friday and hang in there.
