  1. Hey! I had a similar pre-op diet allowance, however I went to the extreme and did almost completely liquids with the occasional solid. I'll be honest, the first 3-4 days were really hard, but then it was like my body and mind kinda snapped together and I was fine. I used Muscle Milk as Meal Replacements. I know it's more expensive than just buying a thing of Protein powder, but they tasted so good and I just couldn't handle the consistency of Protein Powder drinks after the third day. Plus they have a pumpkin spice flavor that tastes amazing! Back on track, maybe have chicken and veggies once a day and do a replacement shake for your other two meals? In between meals, you can have sugar free Jello and plain Greek yogurt (bleh. Tasted gross but it curbed the hunger a little so can't really complain). And broth. I also couldn't stand chicken broth, so I just stuck to beef broth. But if you want more options, you could strain chicken noodle Soup and get that broth, or buy a bunch of ramen (whichever flavor you want) and just use the seasoning packet it comes with in hot Water. You can do this if you want to. The hardest part for me was fighting the hunger sensation. At first I felt hungry ALL the time, but then after a few days, it was like it went away over night. Now people are all different, so I won't promise it will be the same for anyone or everyone else, but when I felt like I was going to cheat or something, I kinda made a rule that I would just sit still and I wouldn't move until I knew I could get past it. The whole point of the pre-op is to shrink your liver, and I was determined to not self-sabotage. You just kind of find your anchor and stick to it. Also, and I know this sounds silly, but I have never used Twitter before, but I started one that I didn't share with anybody and would use it as a mental journal/outlet. I was honest, so when I was hungry I would complain about it like a child on there, or when I was feeling better, etc. I think that helped me mentally Sorry this post was so long, I got carried away... hope something somewhere in all this was helpful to you! Free at last!

16 days post op and down 16lbs. It's slowing down as I'm leveling out but I'm feeling so much stronger and I'm eating yogurt, tuna fish, salmon, low fat cottage cheese, and high Protein meatless burritos with a flaxseed tortilla now. food is good but I'm still drinking my shakes because they make my Vitamins and protein intake easier. Shakes make sure I'm taking the food introduction and intake slowly as well. I want to get to know my new pouch nice and easy as the thought of throwing up or dumping horrifies me greatly!! 3 days in...

I was walking week 1. Week 2 I could do very light exercise. Week 3 I returned to Water aerobics. I was working on drinking 60gms(minimum) of and 64 ounces of fluids. It probably took 2 weeks to work up to those levels. I was given a list of what I could have. I was on a full liquid diet of Protein drinks, teas, soups and yogurts for the 1st 2 weeks, then pureed food for 2 weeks then soft foods for 2 weeks. Ask your program what you should be eating/drinking.

    Food Tracking Confusion

If you measure a portion and don't finish it, do you finish it later? If so, then just track the portion you ate based on what you measured. For instance if you eat 1/2 a Greek yogurt then record the 1/2 serving and then when you finish the other half record the second 1/2 (or 1/3 or quarter or whatever).

    Question for long-timers

Hi Terry1118....I'm 17 months post op. Everyone is different and I can only tell you what I have experienced. I do not do chicken, beef or pork well at all, every time I try to eat it I have a very difficult time processing and my stomach hurts. I get my Protein from cottage cheese, yogurts and shakes. I basically live on Soups, veggies, grains. I can't do Pasta or rice well...they just don't go down well. I make sure I chew, chew, chew, chew and still I have problems with meat. I can do fish but cannot do lobster well, I think its to stringy and I love lobster too I nice piece of catfish or flounder is just perfect for me. I think you are progressing just fine. Everyone has to go at their own pace, I think I had a "regular" meal about 6-7 months out, I'm still learning what I can and cannot have!! If all you blood work comes out fine than are OK. My blood work always comes back perfect so I continue to take my Vitamins, protein and get my fluids in.

    Now On Mushy Foods

Hey Vicki... Well I am a boring eater... for breakfast I have a 1/2 cup low fat cottage cheese and a 1/4 cup of fat free plain yogurt. Lunch is either soup, or a lean Cusine, or cheese and grapes, afternoon snack is maybe some raw nuts (almonds montly) and dinner is the same as lunch. I have my protein shake as a mind morning snack. Sometimes I have my protein shake as breakfast on the weekends.

    Diet question!

At 7 weeks post-op I had JUST been cleared for solid foods. I was aiming for 100 grams of Protein a day. My day looked something like this: Breakfast: Protein shake Morning Snack: String cheese Lunch: 2-3 ounces of soft meat (pulled chicken, tuna salad, etc.) Afternoon Snack: Dannon Light & Fit Greek Yogurt Dinner: 2-3 ounces of soft meat (pulled chicken, tuna salad, etc.) Evening Snack: Protein Shake Hope that helps!

    Diet question!

Since my sleeve was in 2011, the Protein targets were more like 60grams.... which wasn't so easy to get at just 7 weeks out! There is considerable evidence that higher protein targets especially for bigger people is very helpful so I would be aiming in the 80-100gram range if at all possible. I ate alot of low carb Protein drinks, greek yogurt, lean meats like fish chicken etc. I would occasionally get some veggies in but not much. It took a few months before I had capacity to resume eating much in terms of veggies. I never have added alot of fruits due to the sugars.
  9. Thanks. I did buy some Greek yogurts to try, I did get the Fage 0%, it seemed to be the highest rated. I will try that in a smoothie tomorrow and see if that helps.
  10. I officially started mushies on Feb 17 - 10 days after surgery. My weightloss has stalled and I'm sure it's due to going off liquids only and adding in carbs. I expected it and I'm okay with it. Next week I'm allowed to go back to the gym to start cardio. I've been walking everyday and have worked up to 1 mile. To give an idea of what a mushy plan looks like here is my food so far: Bfast 1/2 a pre-made GNC protein shake Snack 1 graham cracker with about 1/4 tsp of peanut butter Lunch 1 piece of thinly sliced turkey, about 4 spoonfuls of chicken and veg soup (no vegs) and 2 spoons of mashed potatoes Snack (will be) 1/4 bottle of Isopure, 1/2 pudding blended w protein powder Dinner (will be) 3 oz of leftover soup, 2-3 tsp of potato Snack LF string cheese I'm trying to get in enough protein but I'm falling short so I'm going to start adding yogurt and/or cottage cheese for meals or snacks.

Anyone not enjoy thier 'food funeral'

I had several food funerals like you, and did notice as I got closer to surgery- food got worse and worse. I started to hate it because I had been relying on it so much, and it was costing my my health. It's funny though, I realized soon after, you don't need food funerals, you can still eat post surgery, some foods you just won't care for. I love hamburgers and chicken fingers and I ate them both afte surgery, it resulted in my hacking and puking my guts out to the point where they are not even remotely appetizing now. I would rather have a Greek yogurt. Post surgery you will be rewired for food differently, no need to have a funeral.

    Nutrition drinks

Well I used tescos own version of slimfast drinks but added yogurt to them in the blender. You can also buy Protein powder and add a scoop aswell. So for instance strawberry flavour shake, a strawberry low fat yogurt and a scoop of Protein Powder. The more protein the longer you feel full. They also have vanilla and chocolate ones. You can also buy complan in most supermarkets which is basically a build up drink but can be used as a sole source diet. I added protein powder to it. The protein powder can be bought cheaply at holland and barret etc Hope this helps :sneaky:

    Portion question

My husband and I had surgery 2/8/2013. He is like you I call him cast iron stomach. He can drink a whole protein shake in my 25 minutes. a bottle of water in a house. 1/2 cup of soup in 15 minutes without getting sick! It takes me 2 hours to eat 1/4 of a cup. It takes me all 2 hours to eat 2 tablespoons of refired beans, guac, and greek yogurt mixed. Most things bother my sleeve. With him it seems like nothing bothers his. He is still losing weight tho.
  14. I am one week and 2 days post sleeve. If I didn't physically see the incision marks, I would swear nothing was changed. Yes, my appetite has lessened but I find myself being able to eat more than I should. I can eat about 1/4 c of Greek yogurt or about 1/2 can of ff cream of chicken soup without feeling like I'm full. Is this average? Last night when everyone had pizza I ate abou1/4 of ricotta with 2tbsp of tomato sauce, went down fine no issues, really wanted the pizza though. I can also gulp water down no issue. Should I be worried?

    Post Op diet questions..

It depends on what type of "liquid" diet you are following. I have to follow a clear liquid diet (fat free broth, sugary free jello, sugar free popsicles and water/crystal light) for 7 days after surgery, then move to full liquids, which all listed above and milk, yogurt and low-fat creamy strained soup. I bought low-fat tomato soup and cream of potato soup (to be strained) for the next week of the diet.

    Traveling tips?

Packing your own food is pretty easy, as long as you remember to not pack any liquids or semi-liquids (I saw some apparently very dangerous yogurt confiscated at the security checkpoint). I usually pack some low-fat lunch meats and cheeses to roll up and snack on. I'll usually have a Protein bar on hand, but I try to stay away from them since even the "low-carb" varieties seem to have 20-30 grams of carbohydrates. I usually carry my food in a soft insulated lunch box, since this doesn't count as either your 1 carry-on, or your "personal item", since you're planning on consuming it on the plane. I just got back from a 10 day trip to Seattle, and it sure was nice to not be packed into an airplane seat, and to not have the tray table in contact with my belly. It was a very different experience not being so cramped. Bryan

    Pre-op Diet?

My current surgery date is Aug 27, but I did have a July 20th date scheduled previously and started my 2 week pre op diet and actually got 3 1/2 days in before it was changed. My diet consists of protein shakes before breakfast and lunch. For b'fast I can have hot cereal or grits, yogurt and applesauce and 8 oz of milk. Lunch is broth or just the broth of a soup, yogurt or applesauce. Dinner is much the same without the protein before and I can add sugar free jello or popsicles with a protein drink after dinner. I lost 7 lbs when i did this for less than 4 days. I"m thinking a good 15-20 will drop when I get on this prior to my surgery! Yeah!

    Im freaking out!

I can relate and how, I was at my worst the 6 months prior to my surgery I ate myself into oblivion before surgery I had a major crisis happen at the beginning of the year which didnt help but every day was a party I went over 300 lbs which was my delivery weight at 9 months pregnant and left hospital at 275 this time no baby and morphed to 341. Do yourself a favor dont be silly like I was , yes I took the 41 lbs off but had I started at 280 I would be in such a better place now and I beat myself up for giving up on me and allowing that to happen. My excuse was I wont be able to eat again. So I thought , but Im here to tell you different I can eat and sad to say alot, I have to really watch myself and my portions it gets easier each day. I can now eat a whole yogurt when 3 weeks ago I could only do half at a sitting. So try to keep it real dont sabbotage yourself like I did cause yes the weight will come off but you have that much more to loose. Good luck to you, and stay strong
  21. I like refried beans with some greek yogurt, split pea soup and I took fresh spinach and cooked it with onion, garlic and chicken broth drained it and put in food processor with some ricotta cheese and a few eggs and salt and pepper to taste. Bake in a pan sprayed with pam and added mozzarella cheese on top last 15 min. Yum. I then let it set and cut into small portions that fit in those little snack baggies and freeze. You can do the same with cauliflower and put spaghetti or marinara sauce over it. Check out eggface.com. There are lots of recipes. Hope that helps.
  22. Our stage 2 includes applesauce, cream of wheat, an egg, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. But very small quantities. Weeks 1-2 are liquid only with 3-4 tablespoons of food, relying mainly on protein shakes for nutrients, but exercising your pouch with very small amounts of food. Also, we were told to stop as soon as you feel full, even if it's only 1 TBL. So I don't think you need to feel like you are forcing yourself to finish the food. I am still pre-op, but have been required to make meal plans for the 3 stages after surgery. Do you have a dietician you could work with to come up with some meal plans? I hope this helps. Best of luck! Amy
  23. Could I have aggrevated my esophogas and stomach from my pbing yesterday? I cannot tell if I actually have post nasal drip or am just feeling this way from the pb. Anyhow, managed to drink 18 oz. of tea this morning sipping from 7:30 a.m.- 11:00 a.m. wasn't hungry until about 12:00 p.m. and tried one spoonful of yogurt that caused major gurgling, so I waited until 2:00 p.m. to have the broth from wonton Soup and just the broth, which I could only take in 1/2 cup without feeling intense gurgling. I have tried sipping on some green ice tea over the past hour and recently it just all came up. Just pure liquid... I am worried about dehydration even though I feel fine now. I am also worried about what to do since the dr. office is closed. Anyone have any advice to get me thru the night?????? This has never happened to me. I heard that slips would cause major pain and I don't feel anything but gurglly bubbles moving in my esophagus.
  24. Ok so Im about 2 weeks post op and have to say I feel better than expected. I've lost about 17 pounds since surgery and about 30 since I began this process and even though my Wii Fit syas Im obese who cares I lost 30 pounds!!!!!!! I've started softer foods and had a nasty encounter with a saltine cracker I've been able to eat Chili and cottage cheese and yogurt some baked tater tots and croutons. True that I have to chew the hell out of it but it's well worth it. Scramble eggs go down well if not to dry and if you put some salsa on them they are excellent. If you have any pointer and or recipes please let me know MERRY CHRISTMASS!!!!!!!!!!

    Hungry a lot!

I find myself hungry at lot and it is starting to bother me. Need some advice. I usually workout for an hour 5 to 6 days a week, running 3 or 4 of those days, walking and weight training the other days. I eat but I am hungry a lot. Here is my typical food day. Breakfast (before working out): A banana, Protein bar, yogurt, a piece of Jerky or two boiled eggs. I try to drink a little Water but not enough to fill me up. (Can’t workout on a full tummy. Learned that the hard way. LOL!). When I get to work, I will have a yogurt or smart one egg breakfast sandwich. A little later I will drink water. I usually have a cup of coffee (sometimes two) before noon). Snack: Jerky, applesauce, Protein Bar, plain Peanut Butter or nuts. (Sometimes I forget to eat the snack) Lunch: Tuna or grilled chicken breast on top of some lettuce or a small salad or some leftovers from the night before. Afternoon: Drink more water; a Protein shake, nuts, rice cake or cheese/crackers Drink shake or water on the way home. Dinner: Whatever I cook. Maybe fish or chicken and veggies. Will eat a few roasted potatoes or a few mouthfuls of rice sometimes but I try to stay away from bread and rice as much as possible. Late night snack: Nuts or yogurt or jerky and water I will eat some chips or chocolate covered peanuts every once in a while as a treat but not often. Even with all of the water I drink, I am hungry a lot. I eat everything on a saucer. What doesn’t fit, I don’t eat. A lot of the time, I will eat 3 or 4 ounces of meat and leave the rest to nibble on later. What am I doing wrong? The scale is not moving but I am working out like a mad woman.
