    QUESTIONS!

    1. Can you also have Protein shakes, sugar free Jello and sugar free Popsicle on your plan? I found that the variety of those things helped. I also tried a lot of different protein shakes and that kept things interesting. Just remember this phase does not last forever so you can make it through.2. The purée soups depends on your plan. Pre op I was only allowed protein shakes, broth, SF jello and SF Popsicles. Post op I was allowed puréed soups 3. For the first approx. three months I found it hard enough just to get all my protein and Water in for the day. food didn't taste very good in the beginning for me and I didn't want any snacks, I just ate when I was hungry. We are all different. Just listen to your body, stick to your plan, and when you do eat snacks make sure they are healthy snacks and you will do fine. 4. Wish I could remember how long mine took to heal. I did go on a beach vacation at five weeks post op and they were completely healed by then. 5. After surgery my tasted changed drastically. I didn't have any cravings for about the first nine months. Now when I have cravings its for sweet things- pre op I loved chips bread and Pasta, now I have no cravings for those things. Now that I am at maintenance if I have a craving for something sweet I eat it and just get right back on my high protein low carb way of eating. 6. Going out to eat has always been easy for me. I just make sure to pick high protein food. Almost all restaurants have something you can pick from. Nowadays I usually just split a meal with my husband or get an appetizer. Makes eating out cheaper. For instance today I was out running errands and shopping and went through chick fil a and got the grilled chicken nuggets. Good luck on your surgery!! 1-Mostly on clear liquids but I can have apple sauce and yogurt 2-thank you 3-by snacks I meant by the bariatric snacks 4-thank you 5-my nutritionist said my taste buds will never be the same because they change 6-ok and because my family have pizza night every other Friday

    Pre-op Liquid Diet Question

I was allowed sugar free jello, pudding and light yogurt. All of that counted toward my liquid intake.

    Multi Vitamin with Iron

I dumped this MV into my yogurt and it tasted fine but the consistency was very granular. Did you ever mix it with food or drink?

    Distance Running

The day before? Honestly I don't! I eat whatever I'd normally eat! You typically burn 100 calories per mile so you don't really need a LOT of extra food. Day of if I will be running longer than an hour (6+ miles usually) I will eat a bit higher in carbs than usual--oatmeal with Protein powder in it or a small banana with Peanut Butter. My goal is about 200 calories. Then if it's a race or a really long run (10 miles or more) I will often drink juice--I like evolution brand with fruits and veggies and sometimes coconut Water. Then I try to take in 100 calories at 30-40 minutes and then every half hour after that. Sometimes that's purchased runners fuel--gu's or gels--or more often the more whole food ones like bonk breakers or honey stinger waffles. I can't typically eat it all at once so I do it but by bit. Sometimes I use fruit pouches marketed to kids, sometimes I make my own date/nut/dried fruit balls or use the Lara bars that are just those. Sometimes I use peanut butter pretzels. I typically drink NUUN on a run but if I'm worried about getting enough calories I will do Fluid or something with sugar. Then after I refuel with protein and carbs--often a higher carb Protein shake like BSN Syntha 6. Sometimes I have geek yogurt with granola or pretzels (I usually need some salt) or I save my peanut butter and banana for after.

    February 2016 sleevers?

I had a hard time because of hunger and tiredness the first two days. Wednesday and Thursday weren't as hard but I was still hungry. Today I had a harder time because there was a Superbowl Party right behind my desk, but I have fantastic friends that brought veggies and low fat dip and a strawberry salad. I had raw veggies with a little dip and a salad with some raspberry vinaigrette. Not too much sugar and I didn't veer far off the path too far. I had a shake an hour ago because I stay hungry! Do the best you can. It's a struggle but you can do it! it's hard isn't it,I'm on a liquid only diet so I'm allowed 8 yogurts a day with 1 pint of milk that's all :-( the yogurts are making me feel sick though so only managed to eat half of one today and yesterday! But I've lost 8 pounds so that's good I guess! Thank you for your support :-) we can get through this ???? 10 days left until surgery!!
  7. Definitely bring Protein powder. You can always bring an empty shaker bottle with you, too, and fill it up after you pass through security. I'd bet you could find a yogurt in the airport. As for going out, it's a little tricky with purée. eggs were on my purée list, so if it happens to be a diner, you might be ok. Some soups will work, too. A bisque or something you can sip the broth out of. Also, you didn't hear this from me, but someone once said all food is purée if you chew it enough! So, if you can only find a bean Soup or soft white fish, just chew and chew and chew!!

Flying after surgery, and puréed foods

You can bring packets of Protein powder and a collapsible funnel with you. Then just buy bottled Water or milk once you are through security and mix the Protein Powder into the bottle. A lot of airports also have thing like yogurt or cheese sticks for sale at various stands. Are you allowed cheese sticks in your pureed stage? I was. If you don't know, maybe you can ask your nutritionist ahead of time. For eating out, you are going to be pretty limited to just Soups. Be careful to not eat any of the more solid chunky bits. Definitely do NOT eat the celery if there's celery in there. It's way too fibrous, even cooked.
  9. ohh heck yes I have had this happen and it sucks.. I was good with scrambled eggs on week 5 and then week 6 or 7 my sleeve said no thank you and sent it back up. the only thing that has never come back up is baked chicken, yogurt and cheese, everything else is suspect. I just figured its part of the process, I don't use my nausea pills as much which is good, and i have learned to taste things and wait 5min now before taking another bite.
  10. My surgical center provides a stage-by-stage diet plan including portion sizes. My stage 2 was no more than 2oz of yogurt/mashed potatoes/cottage cheese at a time, 4x daily. Post bypass is an experiment that each person needs to take part in. What food agrees with me may not agree with you. Stick to your measured portions 3-4x daily and make sure you are getting in all your Protein as well as Water. That way you'll KNOW you're eating the right amount and not too much. If you need to break the meals down into smaller portions....so be it.
  11. I'm nine weeks out and have no regrets about having gastric bypass. I'm down 46 pounds. yay! But I'm getting tired of having to always wonder if i can eat something or if i'm eating too much or if I'm eating too fast. I hate the feeling I get when my stomach doesn't like a food, and actually, I haven't even ventured out very far yet from yogurt, Soup, Protein shakes, you know; the 'slider' foods. This morning i had Cream of Wheat. With plenty of fairlife milk so it was creamy. I didn't eat much, perhaps 1/4-1/3 cup. So I don't think i overate. I had no desire or room to add fruit as my nutritionist suggests. I waited an hour to two hours and tried to drink some Water and my stomach wants nothing to do with it. I thought i was going to throw up but it seems to have calmed down now. But my stomach feels uncomfortable...so i am not feeling good right now. Ugh. i hate this part of the journey! I've had cream of wheat several times before. I don't remember it being a problem. Your comments? I feel like I can't even take my Vitamins right now.

    Stretched Sleeve

I'm on day 3 of the liver reduction diet to get my sleeve "back in shape". It's already feeling more restricted. It's good reminder to up up up your protein when you've been slacking and get in the habit of healthy eating again. Plus, once you see the scale start moving again, it's gets you in the groove again. They have me on a shake for breakfast, a shake for lunch with either 4 oz. of yogurt or 1/2 cup plain oatmeal, or 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce or sugar free pudding, a snack whcih would be something that you could choose from lunch and dinner is 2 oz lean protein with 1 cup of green veggies. If you absolutely have to you can have a shake in the evening. They would probably like you to make shakes with water but I make mine with skimmed milk. Drink all the broth you want and eat sugar free jello. The first day and a 1/2 are tough. You will have carb withdrawl but your energy levels will sky rocket and you will be reminded on how good this feels.

    My 2/3/16 sleeve

Update: day 2 I had the leak test and was in tears by the end because of the feeling of the liquid hitting my new pouch. Since I passed the test, they started me on Clear liquids and took my iv fluids bag off. I've been walking a ton. Mat least 10-15 laps around the floor 7-8 times a day and it usually helps me get out one painful burp of gas. I was supposed to go home tonight but spent the night again because pain is not managed yet. I was started on the liquid hydrocodone which should last 4-6 hours and only lasts me about 1.5 hours. Then they give me diludad which lasts for 2 hours max. So pain seems like it will keep me again coupled with the fact that I'm struggling to drink 1 oz Water per hour. I know this is going to get better daily and even with the pain and discomfort I would do it over no doubt! Did anyone stay more than 2 nights because of pain management? Also, any advice to get over the fear of drinking water/sipping broth/baby nibbling Jello? I have clear liquids again today and am already fearing the yogurt and shakes that come tomorrow. ????????????

    Stages

I was sleeved 1/25 too! I am on clear liquids, protein drinks, and plain Greek yogurt for 2 weeks. After that I can have puréed foods for 2 weeks. Hey - good to see another 1/25 person here! How are you doing?

    Stretched Sleeve

Thank you for asking! What does that type of diet entail?! For me, it was two weeks of: Protein shake for breakfast a piece of fruit or a cup of yogurt for a snack Protein shake for lunch raw veggies for snack 4oz protein and veggies for dinner.
  18. "I didn't grow up eating broccoli, cauliflower, Greek yogurt, oatmeal, etc...so why would I start eating that stuff now? It's bad enough that I can't stomach plain chicken, but if I tried to force down some broccoli....oh Lord!" Since you asked for advice, here's a thought: If you only plan to try eating what you grew up eating you might be in for a little disappointment. If you're like me, childhood foods are some of the foods that made me fat after decades of eating them. I know you're having issues eating some foods now. But going forward, consider trying some new recipes for veggies and other foods that you didn't grow up eating. For example, lots of veggies can be made quite delicious with a little creativity. Tonight, for instance, I made "fried" green Beans in a wok using just a little olive oil, garlic salt, dried onion powder, salt and pepper. They were delicious with the skinless chicken breast I served with a little basil pesto. Ummm mmm! I also had a few bites of baked sweet potato, which was something I grew up eating -- but as a kid I ate it slathered in butter, marshmallows, and canned, sugared pineapple. Eaten just by itself, sweet potato is delicious. BTW, I didn't grow up eating any kind of basil, pesto or fried green beans. And a wok was not a word I'd ever heard as a kid. It's time to try some new things.

    Liquid diet

I've been doing 2oz soup and 2oz of thinned (with skim) yogurt for my meals but sometimes still feel hungry. I'm hoping it is because it is not solid food. Anyone else feeling the same way? Seriously hope that once I start solid food I get that quick full feeling.
  20. You will feel normal again! I remember that was the question I asked myself most in those early days. I'm pretty sure I even posted it on here a few times. "Will I ever feel normal again!??!?!" But I eventually did and you will too! It's hard to believe right now, I know, but you really really will. As for the pureed stage, I never once ate any actual pureed food. I had my Protein shakes, yogurt, and recipes from this page: http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/08/pureed-foods.html The Baked Ricotta saved me! OMgosh that sounds so good. I bookmarked the page and will be trying this once I get to that phase. Thanks a million for posting the site.
  21. Every Wednesday the hospital where I had my surgery holds a life class for all sleeve and bypass patients to attend. The staff have actually had the surgery themselves so they are speaking 1st hand and know what we are going thru. I was told no peanut butter because the carbs are more than the proteins. NO protein bars from Walmart, no Atkins meals from Walmart, no peanuts but to eat almonds the 100 calorie packs and no breads. I had been going thru a stall for 4 weeks and when I took their advice I have lost 4lbs in a week. They definitively know what they are talking about. I buy the Greek Yoplait yogurt 100 calories and it comes in strawberry shortcake, peach, apple pie and it is wonderful! My stepdaughter made me a smoothie with one cup of greek Yoplait yogurt(strawberry cheesecake) we had froze some chopped up bananas and put them in the blender with some protein powder and little milk and it was awesome!!! Hope this helps.
  22. I think my philosophy has been that eating 4 crackers is better than not eating anything at all. If I can't get meat to go down and stay down, what is the point? At least crackers and nuts stay down. I didn't grow up eating broccoli, cauliflower, Greek yogurt, oatmeal, etc...so why would I start eating that stuff now? It's bad enough that I can't stomach plain chicken, but if I tried to force down some broccoli....oh Lord! I'm averaging about 50 grams of Protein per day. And I am getting in all of my fluids with G2 and shakes.
  23. You are EARLY in the process. All I can tell you is that right now, you need to be treating everything you intake as if it is part of your prescription diet. Because it IS. It may be months before things taste normal again. Until then you need to nourish your body in spite of it. You don't take your supplements because they taste like Skittles, you take them because this is what you signed up for to get healthy. It's the same with your Protein supplements. Right now, do your best to get down whatever the prescribed amount is. Now, that said, there IS hope if you don't fancy shakes, (me either). Once you can take solids, there are lots of products to help you get your protein in if you can't get it all from whole foods. I can't achieve the number I should without at least one supplement per day and I'm more than 2 years out! I do a Protein Bar, protein muffin, protein bread, protein Pasta, protein hot chocolate or latte... Something to give me about a 20g boost at least once per day. Sometimes it's in a product I purchase, sometimes I make my own Protein Bars using whey protein as a component. Point is, it's rare that I ever do a "shake", but I do supplement. Other simple swaps like spinach for lettuce, greek yogurt for regular, Fairlife milk for regular (you can do that one now on liquids) can all help get you there. Hang in there! Work your plan like the prescription that is is and you'll get there!
  24. I'd have a long hard look at the crackers - typically they don't have much nutritional value. With small capacity, every bite needs to be nutritionally sound. It may also be that you aren't eating enough. Have a look at more nutritionally dense foods that stick with you longer - Greek yogurt for breakfast is a great place to start.
  25. I hate Protein shakes too. I've just started to experiment with them, and this is what I've learned. 1. GENEPRO Protein Powder is unflavored. It does have that whey protein smell, but it doesn't change the taste, consistency, or texture of what you put it in. I've put it in plain milk, stirred with a fork, and it just tasted like milk. I had a friend taste it, and she agreed with me. This morning I made a fake Starbucks hot chocolate with 2 T cocoa, 2-3 T Torani sugar free syrup, a dash of salt, 1.5 c 1% milk, and 2 tsp Genepro. Add the protein powder AFTER heating. Tasted just like hot chocolate, and the whey protein smell kind of blends in with the milk smell. I'm going to try it in Soups and broths too. Genepro has 30 g of protein for only 1 T, so it takes half the powder than most Protein drinks. It's not a Meal Replacement though--there's no Vitamins and minerals. I believe unjury is a similar protein powder. 2. Get the book Bariatric Foodie Guide to Perfect Protein Drinks. It's cheap and has lots of good ideas. She talks about how to get different textures and tastes depending on your food preferences. She also has good ideas for flavorings (Torani sugar free syrups; fat-free sugar-free dry pudding mixes). 3. If you are past the Clear liquids stage, try this super shake idea: 1 veg, 1 fruit, unflavored Greek protein yogurt, and liquid. For the veg, Kale or spinach adds the least amount of flavor. I usually use frozen berries, peaches, or mango. I use Water, but milk, almond milk, soy milk, etc would work too. Sometimes I'll add parsley or cilantro, but I've heard mint and ginger are good too. I might also add a small amount of fat such as Peanut Butter, nuts, or avacado. You can also add liquid vitamins, or other nutritive supplements. If I'm using fresh fruit, I'll add ice. If you use berries, it won't be very sweet, so some people might want to add a little Splenda, or apple, or carrot. If you need more protein, you can add a small amount of protein powder like Genepro without ruining the taste. 4. Juicing: I've learned to love juicing. Watery vegetables work the best, including cucumbers and celery. You can get some liquid out of kale and spinach, but not much. I haven't tried cabbage, but that might work. Regardless of the vegetables, I always add an apple for sweetness and ginger for kick. I've heard asparagus is to be avoided, because the flavor is too strong. You can add something like Genepro for protein; I haven't tried this one yet, but I have high hopes for it. 5. Do you like fish? I love salmon, so I'll be experimenting soon with salmon spread recipes. It doesn't work for the liquid phase, but it should be fine for the soft foods phase. 6. Bone broth: This is broth made with bones and other ingredients, cooked for 24 hrs or so, long enough to leach minerals out of the bones. Try making it yourself with celery, carrots, onions, and bay leaf. You can also buy it online. I've heard it tastes much much better than regular broth or stock usually available at stores, and is healthier too: lots of nutrition in there, including protein. Add a little protein powder like Genepro. (I haven't tried this one yet either.) 7. I've heard good things about Fit Frappe protein drinks, although they are a little high on carbs. You can mix it half and half with a zero carb protein powder. I've also heard good things about Syntrax Nectar: they have a lot of fruit flavors rather than the normal chocolate and vanilla. Good luck! I haven't had surgery yet, but I'm also worried about the abundance of Protein Shakes. Most of them are so gross and way, way too sweet.
