  1. Ive gone over and over this in my head a thousand times. What should my goal weight be. I tried to set something reasonably attainable for myself. I settled on 170 for the time being. Short term i focus on 10 pound increments at a time. Im sure at 170 i will still be viewed as being overweight.......but......i just dont know without having a plastic surgery intervention if anything to much lower then that is going to be a realistic expectation! So i say focus on somthing attainable!

    Happy! Happy!! Happy!!!

That's awesome. I'm one week post op and I can already feel the difference. Congratulations!! Sent from my XT1635-01 using BariatricPal mobile app
  4. Who did you see? How long after your goal weight did you have surgery? I’m past goal (reached normal BMI at 6 months). Now down another 10 lbs. I feel like the excess skin is making me think I can’t just try to maintain.

Pre-Op Diet.. part of that 60-70%?

@@Ruth1ess What you are asking is if you can bio-hack your way to more weight loss. No one can give you an answer to that. The 60-70% is an average, It is a completely arbitrary number. Doctors use it because that is the average and its is a good number. Losing that amount of weight is life changing for obese people and can end a lot of medical problems. If you use a calculator like this http://www.obesitycoverage.com/weight-loss-surgeries/gastric-bypass/how-much-can-i-expect-to-lose This is what the calculator estimates I can lose at my starting weight This is what the calculator estimates I can lose from the weight I am at right now. I have lost 101 lbs in 6.5 months with the sleeve. The weight lost estimated from my start is 222. The weight lost estimate from where I am right now is 182. The start weights are 101 pounds apart but the end result is only a 40 pound difference. Is it worth it to wait and have to lose weight taking the chances on being hungry, to possible lose an little extra? It might be to you. The amount of weight you will be able to lose on your own before surgery is unlikely to be that much so the differences will be minor. I would have never lost 100lbs on my own. I would never lose more than 30-50 on my own and I always gained it back. I am only 6.5 months out and I have lost 101 lbs basically effortlessly. I haven't been hungry, and after the first 6 weeks I have had plenty of energy. I am more active, but I don't run. I walk, I do yoga, and I lift weights. I do things that don't stress my body and I am still losing at a fast pace. The way I am dropping weight right now 10-14lbs a month and it isn't slowing, as I lose more weight and am more active, it is coming off faster. I expect that I will blow right past that first lost estimate from my start of 365 to 222, I will probably be past 222 long before my one year anniversary. I expect to keep losing long after my 1 year anniversary just because I would have to be really dedicated to eating, basically eat all day to get above my resting metabolic rate. So try that calculator and see if you think the difference is worth waiting for. Just remember it is just an estimate and it is arbitrary.
  6. Lots of folks here have lost 90 - 100% of their excess weight. IMHO, it doesn't matter how much of it you lose pre-op or post-op. I know you think you're being clear, but I think there's a big misunderstanding. You seem to think there's a finite limit to how much weight you can lose (and no more) that's defined as a percentage of your current weight. Also, there's not deadline or expiration date on your ability to lose weight. How much weight you can lose is a function of a lot of things you said you understand and that you can control and (perhaps) a few things you can't control. Consider that I'm 5'5" tall, lost 19 pounds pre-op (11 pounds on my own 2-month diet and 8 pounds on my surgeon's 2-week diet). My surgery day weight was 216 pounds. I reached my goal (150 pounds) at 8.5 months post-op. In the 9+ months since then I've slowly lost another 15 pounds and now weigh 135 pounds. My BMI is now 22.5. That means I've lost 90 - 100% of my excess weight. And as I said earlier, many people here have done the same. EDIT: P.S. The "frustration" you anticipate "toward the end" would be completely self-imposed. The interesting thing is that this trip you're about to start actually never ends. It just goes on and on and on ....
  7. Good morning! I've been doing some thinking, wanted to pick the brains of the veterans in here. I'm still pre-op with no date, probably about two months out. I've lost 10 lbs in the past month by working with my nutritionist. I could probably lose another 10-20 lbs before my surgery, which is awesome! But, wanted to ask, if in your experience, the pre-op weight loss is included in the ~60-70% of anticipated weight loss I can expect to lose with my sleeve? OR is it on top of that? As in, is it worth delaying surgery a little while so I can lose more weight, then my sleeve would bring me down even further than it would have before? I'm wondering if that anticipated 60-70% loss of excess weight is because that's how far my body will want to go, period (so weight lost beforehand factors in as well and I will lose less on my sleeve). Any insight you can give would be great HW: 296 CW: 285 HT: 5'7" BMI: 46

    Perhaps it is time

Thanks for all of your comments to my blogs. I try to respond to as many other people's blogs as I can because when I get home from work, the first thing I want to do is read your comments. So I figure, other people want to read comments to the blogs they write. Anyway, as you know, my surgery was on 6/21/10. I have not had a fill yet because everytime I was scheduled (3) I went to have the fill, but after my discussion with the doctor or nurse practioner, we postponed the fill. They kept saying I wasn't ready yet. Today for lunch I had 9 large shrimp, 6 cherries and an entire banana. This was the largest meal I have had since the surgery. Tonight's dinner was 4 oz of steak, a little broccolli and some romaine lettuce with grated cheese and dressing, on the side of course. I am full now, but I can't believe how much I had for lunch. My first actual fill is scheduled for 9/1 and I think by then I will be ready. We'll see how it goes. If I am not losing, eating more or hungry between meals, I will not walk, but I'll run to get the fill. I am so afraid of not losing or even worse, heaven forbid, gaining some back. I've worked to hard to get where I am now, so I refuse to go backwards! Have a great evening everyone. I'm going to watch some TV, relax and get to bed early.
  9. Hi Sharon, I live in Oregon and I am home as of last night. It was a long trip home due to road closures and having to take the coast to get home in the rain. It makes me nervous to ride in the rain in the motorhome. Anyway, I haven't been scheduled yet but I have my nutrition class left to complete and then I will be submitted for insurance approval. I start this week on that. I gained an additional 8 pounds so now I have to lose that and then from 5 to 10 pounds. GRRRR! Why did I do that to myself!! The road from Reno to Vegas is pretty snowed in, be careful.

    Financing question

My surg center is contracted with Care Credit. And they applied for me in the office once I decided I was a go. The total cost of my surgery is $10,500 (all inclusive + fills for a year) and I was approved for $6,500 (10% interest over 60 months ---> $150/month, about what i spend on crap food anyways) and my mom is helping me out with the rest as a graduation present. I'm only 22 and a college student with a part time job, so my credit history, albeit good, isn't very strong. I figure if I can get approved for that, then anyone not in a substantial amount of debt (I owe about 20 grand in student loans) should be fine. The approval process is easy.... you self report your income (so if you fib a little, they cant prove it) and they give you different options (I could have gone 0% for 12 months, but those payments were too big for me). I didn't really look into a private bank loan and maybe I should have for a lower interest rate. But to me, I feel like I got a decent deal as is. And the way I look at it, considering the cost associated with over eating and being over weight over a life time, this will be money well spent. Another company that I have used in the past (when I got laser hair removal) is Chase Health Advance and they offer a lot of 12, 18 or 24 month 0% offers if you finance a large enough amount. -Sum

When Did You Start To Feel Restriction?

I'm 2 1/2 yrs out and it took me 3 fills and 4 1/2 mths to get restriction. I felt like I failed yet another diet. I lost maybe 5 lbs that first 4 mths - only because I stepped up my exercise. I could still eat like a cow - and I did. Then, my first meal after my 3rd fill was like magic. I ate like 3 bites of chicken, 3 bites of baked potatoe and 3 bites of peas. And I was soooo full. I thought "Finally!" You'll get there. I know, everybody has told you to be patient, but you really have no choice. I've lost everything but about 10 lbs (those are the HARDEST to get off) Good luck! Hello- I have a few questions.

Hi Lisa, I was sleeved Jan. 7. My signature lists everything my insurance required me to go through. You are going to get a lot of different answers about what everyone had to do to prepare for surgery. For me I had to loose 10% of my weight prior to surgery. I don't regret the surgery at all, but that's not to say it's been easy. I would have never imagined something so simple like drinking Water could be so difficult. Or making sure you are getting in your Protein. Foods I loved pre-op I can no longer tolerate post-op. It definitely is a life changing surgery. I have stumbled a lot, but I am more conscious of carbs, sugar and protein (but not obsessed, yet lol). It does begin to get a little easier with time. Everyone's time frame (recovery) is very different. Congrats on your decision! Enjoy your journey.
  15. This is what her post stated:::: I have so many emotions going through my head right now, Kiaser hospital called me today and told me my surgery is Monday at 10:20am and I am so excited and yet so scared. I just can't stop thinking about the two ladies in support group that recently went through surgery, one is in ICU now fighting for her life one day after surgery for an infection and the other just passed away yesterday two days after surgery, I have shed many tears. I just want to also add that my deepest sympathy and condolences to the young lady that past as well it's hard to hear she lost her life and trying to change it for the better!!!????
  16. Quinoa Risotto 1 cup quinoa 1 Tbsp. olive oil 1 cup chopped onion 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup vegetable broth 1 cup skim milk 8 oz. mushrooms, sliced 3/4 cup Parmesan cheese Rinse and drain quinoa three times, using a fine mesh strainer to remove the bitter outer coating. Heat olive oil in a heavy saucepan or dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add onion and cook until soft, stirring constantly. Add garlic and quinoa and continue stirring a minute or two. Stir in broth and milk. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer until quinoa is tender, stirring occasionally, approximately 10-12 minutes. Add mushrooms and cook another 3-5 minutes, stirring often. Remove from heat. Add cheese and let stand a few minutes, so risotto can thicken. Serves 6. 17. Quinoa with Butternut Squash Gratin 1 20 oz. package peeled and diced butternut squash or a 1-1/2 lb. butternut squash peeled and diced 1 cup organic quinoa 2 cups Water 1 tsp. salt 2 Tbsp. olive oil, divided 4 cloves garlic, minced 2 Tbsp. shallots 1/2 cup egg substitute, such as Egg Beaters 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese 1 slice Italian bread salt and pepper to taste Preheat oven to 400. Spray a 2-quart baking or gratin dish with nonstick cooking spray. If using pre-cut butternut squash, pierce the package a few times with a fork and microwave on high for 3-5 minutes until squash is soft and tender. If using a whole squash, peel and cube it, then put in a ziploc plastic bag and seal. Then pierce a few times with a fork and microwave as directed above. Wash the quinoa in a fine sieve thoroughly (about 5 minutes) until water runs clear. This is very important, as quinoa has a bitter protective coating that can linger even after processing. Transfer squash and quinoa to a large (2 or 3-quart) pot. Add water and salt to pot and bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and allow to simmer for 15 minutes or until liquid is absorbed and the quinoa blooms into little spirals. Remove from heat and let rest. Meanwhile, heat 1 Tbsp. olive oil over medium heat in a small frying pan. Add shallots and cook 3 minutes. Add garlic and cook a minute or two longer, being careful not to let garlic burn. Pour over quinoa and squash mixture, mixing thoroughly. Add egg substitute, 3/4 cup of the cheese, and salt and pepper to taste. Transfer to prepared baking or gratin dish. Pulse bread in a food processor or blender a few times until fine bread crumbs are formed. Sprinkle remaining cheese and bread crumbs over gratin. Drizzle remaining 1 Tbsp. of olive oil on top and bake for 35-45 minutes or until top is golden brown. Serves 8. Per serving: 224 calories, 10 g fat, 14 mg cholesterol, 394 mg sodium, 26 g carbohydrate, 3 g Fiber, 10 g Protein, 153% Vitamin A, 26% Vitamin C, 20% Calcium, 17% Iron
  18. I went shopping last night for the first time since losing 30 pounds. For the first time in 10 years I could buy what I liked, and not just what fit. For the last 10 years I have been buying clothes if they fit (which was hardly ever), not if I like them....because if they fit, I LIKED THEM!!! I am also out of big girl clothes - officially can shop in the regular women's department - which as you may know increases the possibilities immensly. I am so glad I did this for myself...I just can't say enough about how great I feel. :confused1:
  19. You are ahead of where I was I slept in the recliner for 7 days. By day 10 or so I could sleep on my side if I was careful
  20. Dr. Naim is my surgeon. Had lap band on 8/17/10. Surgery went smoothly, not much pain. I'm down 17lbs as of today, my 1st month anniversary!
  21. I was banded 2/18/13. I am down 43lbs. I have had two fills. One fill was 3cc the other one was this past Monday and it was 2cc. I have a total of 5cc in a 10 cc band. Here's the thing with the first fill nothing and hungry in between meals. The second fill which was three weeks later Im not hungry in between meals. I'm very satisfied on 4oz of food per meal. I am scheduled for another fill in two more weeks. Is this considered the green zone? Is it possible to be there so quickly? Would u all things considered have another fill? Anxious to here your opinions. Thank you.

pros and cons and life changing commitments

There's a great forum on obesityhelp.com for DS patients and those that are researching that specific procedure. If you'd like to solicit business for this particular surgical group, you may want to find a DS site similar to this one, or visit the OH forum. I appreciate your desire to have everyone do their research, but this sounds like a push for this particular group of surgeons that perform DS. They probably are great surgeons, and congrats to your friend that has had DS with great success. I've lost more than 140lbs in less than a year with VSG, and zero malabsorption. Oh yeah, and I lost it with eating ribeye steak and my cholesterol, and other labs are picture perfect. With DS, patients malabsorb more than just 10% of their fat intake. If we're going to tout all the good of a particular surgery, let's be real honest and disclose some of the disadvantages as well. Vitamin and nutrient deficiencies are common even for some of those that are very diligent with their vitamin/supplement regimen. I've read plenty of personal experiences showing that not all DS patients get to goal, or maintain their loss either. So, it's not foolproof. Each patient that chooses to have any of the weight loss surgeries must make a lifestyle change, and deal with their food demons. None of us can rely on our surgery to do all of the work.
  23. Kinda new to this forum. My surg date is Feb 27 also. A little nervous as I have no family living near me, they are all about 1300 miles away. Have 2 good friends who will be looking in on me once I get home. The hospital I will be at is 40 miles from my home because that is where my Dr practices as he runs the Bariatric Division at that hospital. My friends are going to drive me there and back. I purposely selected this particular Dr. because of his experience and that particular hospital is one of excellence. I have been on the Pre-Surg for 9 days and just weighed myself for the first time. I actually lost 10 pounds. I was thrilled. I plan to return to this forum and swap info, recipes that help, etc. I was always height/weight proportionate until I was injured in a fall Oct 21, 1998 (I'll never forget that date) but now have gained more than I am comfortable with and now I have Osteoarthritis which has resulted in the need for a hip and knee replacement, and back surgery may also be needed later if the hip and knee surgery doesn't help enough. My goal is to lose 100 lbs. Impossible for me to work out because of the hip, knee and back pain, but they just repaired our pool where I live (it's been down) but once my incisions heal, I plan to make good use of it.
  24. During my first 22 months I would eat 1000 calories a day. I lost 208 lbs. my dr suggest 1500 to start but I just couldn't consume that much food so my dr had me track everything for a month and he was fine with my loss. I averaged around 10 lbs each month...some more some less of course. Now I bumped it up to 1200 or so although my dr had me stop tracking it so I would learn to eyeball it and continue to lose. I am 8 lbs from my goal. I still eat 3-4 oz of Protein, 1/2 c veggies and 1/4 c starch at meals although I usually don't finish the startch.

    Pureed food ideas

Can I ask, what kind of food stage schedule does your doctor use? I had surgery on 9/10 and I’m supposed to be on clear liquids until 9/24, puréed 9/25-10/8, adaptive/soft 10/9-12/9. Seems like such a long time but I’m sure he has set it this way for a reason. At least now I understand why the other people at my meetings were complaining about just wanting a salad SO badly! Lol
